The final plat for a new housing development in Great Bend was approved
by the Great Bend City Council this week. Housing Opportunities Inc. (HOI) will
move forward with the first phase of development named Cambridge Park and will
consist of six duplexes, two single room occupancy structures and a community
building. 

The 24-acre lot, behind Walmart, was rezoned from agriculture to
planned unit development (PUD). 
Councilmember Alan Moeder voted in favor of the approval after getting final
word from Interim City Administrator Logan Burns that a rain water runoff study
was completed for the low-income housing development. "The way the weather is being so erratic anywhere in the country right now, it's bound to happen here one of these days," said Moeder.

"Based off the drainage study Kaw Valley Engineering completed, it would fill roughly half of the drainage pond on a 100-year rain," said Burns. "Approximately four feet, is what it would rise." 
Cambridge Park will give Sunflower Diversified Services first rights to rent
the apartments for their clients with developmental disabilities. Over the span
of eight to 10 years, HOI wants to add 64 housing units.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend Rec women's indoor soccer champion

On Wednesday, Dec. 21 at approximately 10 a.m., the
Hoisington Police Department, along with the Great Bend Police Department,
executed a narcotics search warrant at 319 ½ E. 2nd Street in
Hoisington. 
Kevin Pekarek Jr., age 40, was located in the residence and taken into custody. 
During the search of the residence, methamphetamine, marijuana and drug
paraphernalia items were located. This has been an ongoing investigation
involving the HPD, GBPD and Barton County Sheriff’s Office. 
Pekarek was booked into the Barton County Jail for possession of meth with intent
to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of meth, possession of marijuana, possession of
drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp. 
Pekarek’s bond was set at $100,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Hoisington man arrested for several drug charges

No one wants to see the flashing red lights of a firetruck outside the house just before Christmas. But Levi Harrison did not mind so much Wednesday evening. Great Bend Fire Department personnel purchased Christmas gifts for five Kans for Kids cancer warriors. Levi's gifts were personally delivered by Santa, who brought a fire truck and ambulance instead of his customary sleigh.

"Levi loved the lights," said Levi's mother, Heather Atteberry. "Although he was shy at first, he warmed up to them quickly. He sat on Santa’s lap for some photos and then went on a ride in the front seat of the fire truck. His world definitely lit up."

Santa was none other than firefighter and advanced EMT Skyler Edwards, playing the role for the first time since kindergarten. The night was extra special since Edwards and his wife, Paige, are both leukemia survivors.

"The other night, seeing Levi's eyes light, just seeing the fire engine there," Edwards said. "We rolled up with the sirens on and the lights on, and it just brought a spark to his eye. He was more mesmerized with the lights than I think he was even with Santa Claus being there." 

Given back is nothing new to the fire department nor Edwards, who actually met his wife while they were both donating time at a camp. 

"It's always awesome to be able to give back to the cancer community," Skyler said. "So much was given to me when I was a kid. My wife and I both had different types of leukemia. We met at a camp when we were adults. We gave back time to that camp a week or a weekend at a time just to help with the kids, help show them a good time, and help get their minds off being sick."

One of the organizations GBFD Social and Charity supports is Kans for Kids. Atteberry said support from groups like the Great Bend firefighters makes all the difference.

"It makes us proud to be a part of a community that comes together to support an organization like Kans for Kids," she said. "Kans for kids helps families financially, but also emotionally, too. They truly become a family that no one plans to be a part of. Without GBFD and others' support, we would not have that support during a time of need. No words can express how grateful we are for the GBFD and others like them."

Levi, now two years old, was born with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, a disorder that is rarely life-threatening but can damage tissue or cause lesions. Levi was diagnosed with the rare disorder when he was just seven days old.

"It causes open sores on parts of his body that can take long periods of time to heal," Atteberry said. "His treatment was topical creams to the sores, as his disease didn’t affect anything internally. Levi’s disease has been inactive since November 2021, but he will always have Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis."

The timing of his birth and the diagnosis meant Levi and his parents, Atteberry and Brandon Harrison, had to endure part of the COVID-19 pandemic while spending a lot of time in hospitals.  

"We could only have one parent in the hospital with Levi," said Atteberry. "So one of us had to wait hours in the parking garage while the other was in the hospital with Levi. Another struggle for any family in this area is any treatment for a child with cancer has to happen at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. It gets extremely expensive for any family who has to travel so far for treatment."

Levi's disease has been inactive for 13 months, but he will have to continue with follow-ups for the next five years to ensure the disease remains inactive.

Sentencing in the matter is scheduled Feb. 24, at 9:30 a.m.&nbsp;The State of Kansas was represented by Assistant Barton County Attorney J. Colin Reynolds. The Defendant was represented by Donald E Anderson II.

Great Bend Fire staff achieves new certifications

Wheatland Electric is once again proud to play a major role in fulfilling Christmas wishes for more than 100 children in need through Saint Francis Ministries’ Christmas for Kids program.

In addition to delivering a $1,000 Sharing Success grant to the non-for-profit organization that exists to provide healing and hope to children and families, 43 of the Wheatland employees and trustees sponsored 105 children for the holidays this year.

This is the sixth year in a row (since 2017) that the cooperative leadership and employees have opened their hearts to fulfill the holiday wish lists of children in need across the southwest and central Kansas service territory, including the following counties: Finney, Wichita, Greeley, Scott, Hamilton, Kearny, and Barton.

The grant funds will be directed to assist the faith-based organization with its Christmas mission. Along with family preservation services, foster care, and adoption assistance, the regional organization also offers several residential programs that serve those with mental health and behavioral issues, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and even survivors of human trafficking.

The folks who work in the local Saint Francis office also have a big heart for the communities they serve and even play a role in providing food donations for Wheatland's annual Cram the Van food drive each fall, for which the cooperative is grateful.

Wheatland Electric sponsors 105 children for St. Francis program

Winter Storm Elliott is bringing a nasty Christmas gift to western Kansas this year, with life-threatening cold temperatures and wind chills of -50 degrees and one to three inches of wind-blown snow. Under those conditions, electric and gas consumption will be higher than normal.

Midwest Energy is advising customers that while it doesn’t anticipate any critical shortages of electricity or natural gas, supplies will be tight. The price of natural gas has increased significantly over the last few days, with anticipated gas prices on the spot market to rise from under $7 per dekatherm to $45 or more by Saturday, Dec. 24. However, the situation today is different than that of February 2021’s Winter Storm Uri, which saw gas prices pass $620 per dekatherm.

“This is a very different event than February 2021,” said Bill Dowling, Midwest Energy’s Vice President of Engineering and Energy Supply. “First, this storm event is forecast to last two days, much shorter than Uri which lasted more than five days; Second, it doesn’t seem as likely that the severe cold will impact the gas-producing areas of west Texas as hard as it did in 2021. Lastly, the gas storage picture is generally favorable, and better than the storage position was in February 2021.”

To prepare for this event, Midwest has scheduled additional gas supplies for its generating facility, and has increased its nomination for gas on all the interstate pipelines serving its retail customers through Saturday, Dec. 24. By scheduling additional spot gas in advance of the winter storm period, the company expects to reduce the likelihood of interstate pipelines applying penalties for scheduling insufficient gas supplies.

Winter weather is expected across some parts of the Kansas-Oklahoma Region going through the holiday weekend.&nbsp; Winter storms can wreak havoc when they hit, bringing freezing temperatures, strong winds, snow, and ice to the region affected. With the&nbsp;severe&nbsp;winter storm advisory in place for this upcoming week, the American Red Cross wanted to remind you of reminders and tips to stay safe.&nbsp;

Each year, hundreds of Americans are injured or killed by exposure to cold, vehicle accidents on wintry roads, and fires caused by improper heaters. The American Red Cross has people in place ready to be interviewed to&nbsp;offer steps you can take to help you stay safe during&nbsp;severe&nbsp;winter&nbsp;weather.

Red Cross offers tips to prepare for freezing weather

Ten thousand dollars to spend before Christmas can go a long way. Jennifer Schroeder needed just two stops to spend her prize from Eagle Radio's Shop at Home for the Holidays. Eagle Radio’s Promotions Director Shannon Towns tells how she did it.

There were 78 finalists at Friday's big giveaway at the Crest Theater in Great Bend. Schroeder, from Ellinwood, was instant finalist No. 23 after qualifying at Nex-Tech in Great Bend.  Schroeder had the opportunity to spend the $10,000 locally before Christmas at any of Eagle's 30 sponsor locations. Schroeder was transported to those locations by GTR Limousine &amp; Party Services.

"We couldn't do all of this without all of our sponsors and presenters, so a big thank you goes out to all of them, plus the listeners that keep it going," Towns said. "We love that you guys head out to all these locations and get yourself qualified on all the instant finalist days, and on all the in-store registration."

Money well spent: Shop at Home for the Holidays winner cashes in on prize

Randy Smith made a life of law enforcement. It may come as a surprise, but he also made it as a Santa. Since 1968, Smith has donned the red and white costume of the jolly fellow for local Christmas celebrations. Now 54 years and many Christmas wishes later, this will likely be his last year playing Santa Claus.

"It all started way back when my wife was working at Alco," Smith said. "Sunflower Early Education wanted to do a fundraiser, and they needed a Santa Claus to take pictures. That's when it started."

Smith was a reserve officer with the Great Bend Police Department in 1968. While law enforcement proved to be his calling, he also wanted to follow the path of his uncle, Ray Smith, who also dressed as Santa. Once he started playing the role, it just took off.

"My first outfit came from Alco," he said. "I bought it from them for $10. It was corduroy. It was about eight years later that I ended up buying an expensive suit for both me and my wife. It just kept growing and growing."

Smith worked for the Great Bend Police Department for 13 years, then worked as an agent with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for 26 years. He spent 14 years as an instructor at Barton Community College, and now works part-time for the sheriff's office. The law enforcement community allowed him to be someone else each December. 

"I had a Santa's Workshop on a Friday night, and I was working with the KBI at the time," he recalls. "We were working a crime scene in Ness County. They let me leave to come back and do that, then go back and do the crime scene. Everybody worked with us."

Being Santa grew and grew over the years. Smith worked the Santa's Workshop at the Great Bend Rec Center for many years. All the while, he never did it for the money, and often helped raise money for others. "I think maybe we'd take $20 out for gas, but the rest of it all went to somebody that needed it," he said.

One of Smith's favorite Santa memories involved going into a local store. He knew many of the shoppers, but no one knew who was behind the beard. Even his granddaughters and great-granddaughters, who would eventually become elves, were kept in the dark.

"My oldest granddaughter, Kenda, was working at Dillons, and Dillons had me in there," he said. "It was so much fun, me knowing the people in Great Bend, them not knowing who I was, and being able to pick on them. It was so much fun."

Over the years, Smith cannot recall a single incident of a child getting sick or having an accident while on his lap. Once his late wife, Sandy, became Mrs. Claus, she took the crying children and warmed them up to the idea of meeting Santa. The Christmas wishes ranged from the trending new toy to far more noble ideas.

"You would be surprised to know that every year, at least four or five kids would ask that there be peace on earth," said Smith. "Amazingly, there were several individuals with disabilities that wanted everyone to love one another."

But dressing up for Christmas, like all things, has to end sometime. Sandy passed away in June 2020, just after the couple's 55th wedding anniversary. Randy recently donated her Mrs. Claus costume to the Santas Around the World display in downtown Great Bend. Randy was diagnosed with lung cancer last December, and had surgery to remove the cancer in February.

Smith may be hanging up his Santa suit for good after the 2022 season, but it has provided him with a lifetime of memories.

"To me the greatest gift of all is love and a hug," he said. "It's not the presents, it's not all of that. It's families smiling, it's the laughter. We're celebrating Jesus' birthday, but each one of us is a child of God, and we each celebrate our birthdays. It's kind of a family affair is the way I look at Christmas. It's family, it's friends, it's everybody enjoying one another."

 </figure>"My first outfit came from Alco," he said. "I bought it from them for $10. It was corduroy. It was about eight years later that I ended up buying an expensive suit for both me and my wife. It just kept growing and growing."Smith worked for the Great Bend Police Department for 13 years, then worked as an agent with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for 26 years. He spent 14 years as an instructor at Barton Community College, and now works part-time for the sheriff's office. The law enforcement community allowed him to be someone else each December. "I had a Santa's Workshop on a Friday night, and I was working with the KBI at the time," he recalls. "We were working a crime scene in Ness County. They let me leave to come back and do that, then go back and do the crime scene. Everybody worked with us."<figure>

 </figure>Being Santa grew and grew over the years. Smith worked the Santa's Workshop at the Great Bend Rec Center for many years. All the while, he never did it for the money, and often helped raise money for others. "I think maybe we'd take $20 out for gas, but the rest of it all went to somebody that needed it," he said.One of Smith's favorite Santa memories involved going into a local store. He knew many of the shoppers, but no one knew who was behind the beard. Even his granddaughters and great-granddaughters, who would eventually become elves, were kept in the dark."My oldest granddaughter, Kenda, was working at Dillons, and Dillons had me in there," he said. "It was so much fun, me knowing the people in Great Bend, them not knowing who I was, and being able to pick on them. It was so much fun."Over the years, Smith cannot recall a single incident of a child getting sick or having an accident while on his lap. Once his late wife, Sandy, became Mrs. Claus, she took the crying children and warmed them up to the idea of meeting Santa. The Christmas wishes ranged from the trending new toy to far more noble ideas.<figure>

 </figure>"You would be surprised to know that every year, at least four or five kids would ask that there be peace on earth," said Smith. "Amazingly, there were several individuals with disabilities that wanted everyone to love one another."But dressing up for Christmas, like all things, has to end sometime. Sandy passed away in June 2020, just after the couple's 55th wedding anniversary. Randy recently donated her Mrs. Claus costume to the Santas Around the World display in downtown Great Bend. Randy was diagnosed with lung cancer last December, and had surgery to remove the cancer in February.Smith may be hanging up his Santa suit for good after the 2022 season, but it has provided him with a lifetime of memories."To me the greatest gift of all is love and a hug," he said. "It's not the presents, it's not all of that. It's families smiling, it's the laughter. We're celebrating Jesus' birthday, but each one of us is a child of God, and we each celebrate our birthdays. It's kind of a family affair is the way I look at Christmas. It's family, it's friends, it's everybody enjoying one another."<figure>

Story by BCC's Joe Vinduska Barton Community College’s Barton Dance Theatre can make you a well-rounded dancer with its “Dancing with the Cougars” social dance series fundraiser, which features five, two-hour workshops at Studio 34 (southeast corner of campus) focused on learning popular dances. Each session is $10, and tickets for each session are purchased separately. Classes are capped at 30. Tickets can be purchased at shows.bartonccc.edu.

All sessions can be attended with or without a dance partner, and all proceeds go to support the Barton Dance Theatre's trip to the American College Dance Festival in March. Schedule of classes:

Barton Dance Theatre to host 'Dancing with the Cougars' fundraiser

For the second year in a row, the Great Bend High School debaters are headed back to state. The Panthers were runner-up to Maize High School in the 5A, 4-Speaker Regional Competition last Saturday, Dec. 17. At the tournament hosted by Salina South, the Panthers secured a win-loss record of seven wins and one loss.

At an ordinary, 2-speaker debate tournament, two partners will rotate between being on the affirmative and negative sides of an issue. At a 4-speaker, however, the format changes. At the 4-speaker competition, a school is represented by two partnerships that will each debate one side (either affirmative or negative) the entire tournament. Senior debaters Adeline Dougherty and Xanna Smith represented the Panthers on the affirmative and were undefeated. Junior Thomas Henrikson and senior Maddix Pokorski partnered to debate the negative side. Seniors&nbsp;Alondra Alvarez and Gavin Hirsh served as alternates.

“We led the whole tournament and were undefeated going into the last round," said Panther coach Kim Heath. "Maize High’s only loss at the time was to Dougherty and Smith, but everyone knew they were ahead of us on tie-breaking points. We pretty much knew that Pokorski and Henrikson had to win the last round against Maize." Unfortunately, that did not happen. Maize also finished the tournament with seven wins and one loss. GBHS was named runner-up after the tie-breakers. Goddard-Eisenhower placed third.

This dynamic of always being on the same side of the issue makes preparation for that one side much more intense leading up to the tournament. The team dynamic of 4-speaker makes it more of a whole squad event because the school’s success relies on everyone competing well. The entire Great Bend Panther team assisted in research, argument development, and practice to prepare for Regionals.

Panther Debaters Aliyah Fryberger and Chrisangel Adame also completed the requirements to qualify for KSHSAA 2-Speaker State and will compete alongside the 4-speaker team. Both 5A KSHAA championship events will be held at Washburn Rural on Jan. 13 and 14, 2023.

The KSHAA tournament is not the only post-season debate tournament in January. Dougherty, Smith, Henrikson and Pokorski also qualified for the Kansas Debate Classic held on Jan. 6 and 7, at Wichita Southeast High School. This event celebrates traditional Kansas high school debate by crowning a policy debate champion across all classifications. That same weekend, the novice teams of Rhys Froetschner and Quinton Heath, and Ellie Damm and Hannah Hopkins will represent GBHS in the Sunflower Novice State Championship.

Living Well Wednesday is a virtual learning series hosted by K-State Research and Extension, Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) professionals from across the state of Kansas. The 2022 Series focused on a variety of essential skills that empower you and your family to live, work and thrive.

Recently, three KSRE Specialists and Extension Agents presented “Healthy and Prepared for the Holidays.” They came together to share tips on how to keep your menu simple and fun during this busy holiday season. The presenters shared how to prepare meals ahead of time, how to make healthy modifications to recipes, and how to repurpose leftovers. The presenters included: Christina Holmes, Extension Specialist; Ashley Svaty, Extension Specialist; and Melinda Daily, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, Sunflower District.

In November, Living Well Wednesday focused on Coping with Loss and Loneliness During the Holidays. Melissa Atchison, Pastor, Manhattan Mennonite Church presented on how sometimes the holiday season is a joyous time, but not for everyone. The presenter shares “you have permission to feel how you feel” and more in this helpful webinar. There are many resources listed for further exploration.

Finally, Dr. Elizabeth Kiss, Professor and Extension Specialist and Joy Miller, Johnson County Extension Agent presented on “Simplify Your Holiday-Focusing on What Matters.” As the holiday season nears, are you looking forward to it or do you dread the time, money and energy involved? Understand what makes the holiday special for you, then plan to celebrate according to your holiday values. View the webinar for more ways to focus on what matters.

All these webinars were also presented in Spanish, which are also available on the website. Services in Great Bend continues to keep the recycling center open to keep items
out of the landfill. 
Sunflower Recycling Director Shawn Bates said a bunch of containers full of
recycled materials were scheduled to go to Southeast Asia. During the shipment, the company in Southeast Asia cancelled all their orders. The materials came back to the
United States forcing the mills to be loaded with cardboard and plastic. 
Bates said the recycling center in Great Bend will continue to help the
community stay green, but asks for assistance. "I want everyone to understand we're recyclers but we're not a trash company," said Bates. "Make sure you clear the trash out of the cardboard containers before you bring them to us. It's not good if we're having our trash dumpster filled up and hauled off five to six times a week. Unfortunately, there's stuff we just can't take." 
Bates added between 50 to 90 cars will drive through Sunflower’s recycling
center each day. 
The recycling center on west 10th Street is open from 9 a.m. to 6

On Dec. 20, 2022, at about 11 a.m., the Barton County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 774 NE. 140 Road in northeastern Barton County. This location is about 1.5 miles west of Odin. The Sheriff’s Office had obtained information about drug activity at the location, and a search warrant had been obtained.

Deputies gained entry to the single residence and located the occupants, identified as Michael Clark,&nbsp; 42, and Dallas Lemonds, 41.

During the course of the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office discovered a substantial amount of controlled substances. Deputies found more than 12 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, one pound of marijuana, half a pound of suspected Psilocybin mushrooms, as well as prescription medications. It is estimated the street value of the controlled substances is in excess of $200,000. Further investigation revealed a stolen GMC truck from Wichita and a stolen riding John Deere lawnmower from Barber County. Firearms were also located inside the residence.

Both Clark and Lemonds were arrested at the scene and transported to the Barton County Jail without incident. Both are charged with distribution of methamphetamine, distribution of hallucinogenic drugs, criminal possession of a firearm, and possession of stolen property. Both are being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation as well as a detective from the Great Bend Police Department. The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are expected.

Barton County Sheriff's Office seizes more than 12 pounds of meth

The Panther wrestlers were on the prowl Monday in search of new habitat. They found it in the east outbuilding on the former CUNA Mutual complex located just off the 281 Bypass. The USD 428 Great Bend district purchased the complex at a discounted price back in September. GBHS Wrestling Coach Nathan Broeckelman said it was exciting to move into the new building, which will be called The Lair.

"We're excited, feeling very fortunate to have the opportunity to make this our home, and just blessed overall," he said. "It's just a nice little Christmas gift to the Panther wrestling program."

The large warehouse was previously turned into a fitness center, complete with locker rooms, with approximately two-thirds of the space used for paper storage. Monday, district staff, wrestling coaches, and the athletes helped install mats along the floor and walls. Custom mats are on the way, and doors will soon be cut for easier access inside the building.

"Eventually, we're getting some custom mats that will fit the space perfectly, that's going to, I think, have 32 practice circles on it, plus a couple competition circles so we can do challenge matches," Broeckelman said. "We'll get some graphics put in there and really make it our home, get all our state placers and state champion individuals moved over and get it all to where the kids can grow up in there, when they're little kids, see the success of the high school kids going through there, so by the time they get into high school, they can try to make their mark inside the building."

The Lair will change how the Panther wrestlers practice, but it will not affect competitions. Dual meets will still be held inside the main gymnasium at Great Bend High School, and the girls' Christmas Clash will still be held in the Panther Activity Center. The move will also benefit the Panther basketball teams as it frees up another court in the PAC.

The CUNA Mutual complex was valued at more than $4 million when USD 428 purchased the property. CUNA Mutual agreed to donate $2.7 million of that price, selling the property to the district for the remaining $1.3 million.

At a November work session, the Great Bend City Council was presented
with information regarding Rural Housing Incentives Districts (RHID).
Additionally, it was proposed that the undeveloped, city-owned property at
Amber Meadows be designated an RHID to promote future housing. 
The RHID captures the incremental increase in a housing development to pay off
the infrastructure costs for 25 years, such as streets, curbs, water and sewer.
Then that cost is not turned over to the homeowner. All taxing entities forgo
the taxes on the new homes for up to 25 years or until the public infrastructure
is paid off. This provides a financing tool for cities and developers to
address housing shortages. 
Great Bend City Council member Natalie Towns was initially concerned this would
make the property difficult to sell if no developers step up to build houses on
the lots, but a discussion reiterated the RHID simply provides the incentive
for developers. 
"I think we should go ahead with the vote because if no one ever develops it, it doesn't change anything."

"It doesn't prevent you from selling it or any other action. It just puts the incentive in place." 
The city council approved the resolution designating Amber Meadows undeveloped
city property as an RHID.
