The market for recycling is currently down, but Sunflower Diversified Services in Great Bend continues to keep the recycling center open to keep items out of the landfill.

Sunflower Recycling Director Shawn Bates said a bunch of containers full of recycled materials were scheduled to go to Southeast Asia. During the shipment, the company in Southeast Asia cancelled all their orders. The materials came back to the United States forcing the mills to be loaded with cardboard and plastic.

Bates said the recycling center in Great Bend will continue to help the community stay green, but asks for assistance.

"I want everyone to understand we're recyclers but we're not a trash company," said Bates. "Make sure you clear the trash out of the cardboard containers before you bring them to us. It's not good if we're having our trash dumpster filled up and hauled off five to six times a week. Unfortunately, there's stuff we just can't take."

Bates added between 50 to 90 cars will drive through Sunflower’s recycling center each day.

The recycling center on west 10th Street is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
