For 28 years, the Kansas Sampler Foundation hosted the Kansas Sampler
Festival where thousands of people gathered at a location to learn about what
Kansas has to offer. The festival ended in 2017 and the following year the Big
Kansas Road Trip was created to have hundreds of people explore the same area
over a few days. 

Kansas Sampler Foundation Co-Director Marci Penner said the
Big Kansas Road Trip gets people further into the communities and provides
first-hand rural experiences. "The people that come to this event, they really appreciate small towns," said Penner. "They like to go to places where they might not know about. The public loves to spend money and love to get to know the area as it is. All we ask for the communities that are showcased is to be good at being themselves." 
Participants do not have to sign up and can decide where and when they want to
go, but there is a menu of activities that accentuates what the area has to
provide.

After exploring north central Kansas this year, The Big Kansas Road
Trip will include stops in Ellsworth and Lincoln counties and the community of
Lucas next year. "There's Mushroom Rock, Faris Caves, Fort Harker and the unincorporated town of Denmark," said Penner. "I think people will be surprised with all the post-rock structures they will see. The backroads in Ellsworth and Lincoln counties are just full of gems."

Wednesday's weather

Last November, it was announced that The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., would be making a stop in Great Bend. The Great Bend Public Library jumped into action on the announcement. On Saturday, May 13, at 11 a.m., the library will host a presentation from Murl Riedel, a retired major from the Kansas Army National Guard.

"As soon as we heard it was coming, I tried to find a speaker to tie into that," said Circulation Manager Lisa Zier. "Luckily, Humanities Kansas has a wonderful speakers bureau. They're an independent, non-profit organization. I applied for a grant, and we have Mr. Murl Riedel coming to put on a program called 'A New Generation of Veterans: Stories from Iraq and Afghanistan.'"

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan gave rise to a new generation of veterans. They challenged society’s traditional notions of military services and raised questions about the role of the U.S. in global conflicts. Soldiers from Kansas were some of the first deployed to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. They returned again and again, yet their stories remain largely untold. Modern communication platforms connected these veterans to family and friends instantaneously but left little written record for future generations. This talk reviews key events of America’s longest war to date and discusses methods to collect and share these stories from American veterans.

“A New Generation of Veterans: Stories from Iraq and Afghanistan” is part of Humanities Kansas's Speakers Bureau and “21st Century Civics,” a collection of resources that invite Kansans to participate in community discussions and learn more about the history of American democracy and the shared responsibilities of citizenship. “21st Century Civics” is made possible with support from “A More Perfect Union: America at 250,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Great Bend Public Library featuring 'Stories from Iraq' on May 13

Seems like it is everywhere! You have probably heard about the risks of consuming too much sugar but what are some practical tips to reduce added sugars in our diet? Added sugars are sugars and syrups added to foods/ beverages when they are processed or prepared. Added sugar is in 80 percent of the products at the grocery store. Most of us eat and drink more sugar than we realize.

Adding sugar to processed foods makes them more appealing and tastier. Sugar gives baked items flavor, texture and color. It helps preserve foods and it fuels fermentation, enabling bread to rise. Sugar also serves as a bulking agent in baked goods and ice cream, and it balances the acidity of foods containing vinegar and tomatoes. Sugar is often added to foods advertised as low-fat because it gives the food more flavor after removing the fat.

So, how much added sugar is too much? The Dietary Guidelines for American recommend you limit added sugars to less than 10% of daily calories. If you eat about 2,000 calories a day, you should limit added sugars to about 12 teaspoons or 48 grams. To put this in perspective, a 12-ounce can of soda has about 10 teaspoons (40 grams) of sugar.

You will be surprised by products that contain high amounts of added sugar, so the best way to make informed decisions is to read labels. The Nutrition Facts label displays the total amount of all sugars (natural and added) found in a serving of the product. There is also a line for added sugars. Another option is to look at the ingredient list on the package. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so if sugar is one of the first few ingredients the product is likely high in added sugars.

· Start by drinking water and other beverages that don’t contain sugar or artificial sugars. One rule that many find useful is to not drink sugar. Add fresh fruit and herbs to your water for a bit of flavor.

· When you drink fruit juice, make sure it is 100% juice, and better yet, eat the fruit!

· Choose breakfast cereals with less sugar.

· Go for fresh or frozen fruit as dessert.

· Buy canned fruit packed in water or juice, not syrup.

· Choose nutrient-rich snacks like vegetables, fruits, low-fat cheese, nuts, whole grain crackers, and low-calorie yogurt instead of candy, pastries, and cookies.

· When you have a dessert high in sugar, share it with others. Sometimes all you need is a bite or two to satisfy a craving.

· Store-bought marinara sauces are often high in sugar and salt. The best is to make your own from fresh tomatoes.

Great Bend High School won 6th place in the 5A KSHSAA State Forensics Tournament at Valley Center, Kansas on May 6, 2023. The team worked tirelessly this season to prepare for the competition and their hard work paid off. Eleven Panthers competed across 16 different events with nine students advancing to the semi-final round and four placing in the top six.

"I am incredibly proud of our forensics team. Their hard work, dedication, and attention to detail through the rehearsal process created outstanding performances," said coach Kim Heath. "They represented our community by showcasing their talents and skills to the fullest extent."

In addition to the students who advanced, the other team members also performed admirably. Even though Chrisangel Adame, Milena Carbajal, Quinton Heath and Reese King did not break into elimination rounds, they earned valuable points for the Panthers, contributing to their overall success.

Semi-finalists included Darcy Feist who placed 8th in Oration. Eave Taylor was 9th in POI and Anna Bitter finished 7th. Placing 10th were Thomas Henrikson and Eave Taylor in Duo Interpretation and Xanna Smith in Dramatic interpretation

Four Panther forensics students were named finalists and earned medals on the big stage. Sophomore, Darcy Feist finished in 5th place in Program of Oral Interpretation. Junior, Thomas Henrikson won 4th place in Humorous Interpretation with a humorous sketch called “No Substitute.” Senior, Maddix Pokorski showed off his critical thinking and analytical skills by placing 4th in International Extemp. Senior, Alondra Alvarez won 3rd place in Prose Interpretation with a story entitled, “It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way.”

At the same time as the State Championship team was competing at Valley Center, the Panthers were being represented at Wichita Southeast at the KSHSAA State

Festival. The goal of each student at the State Festival was to receive a 1 or a 2 rating for their performance.

Nine out of ten of the competitors for Great Bend received a 1 rating and earned a medal. They were recognized for an outstanding presentation with few technical errors. The 1 rating is reserved for a truly outstanding performance.

Ellie Damm and Lea Nokes both received a 1 rating in Dramatic Interpretation. Ailey Williams and Hannah Hopkins worked together on a Duo Interpretation which received a 1 rating. Theo Hopkinson-Smith read a Poetry piece and received a 1 rating, while Chanler Riley earned a 2 for his Program of Interpretation.

Great Bend students also excelled in speaking events. Danica Cline earned a 1 rating in Informative Speaking and Keaton Kruckenberg received a 1 rating for Impromptu Speaking. Kruckenberg and Hopkins also both earned 1 ratings in Extemporaneous Speaking.

With the State Championship in their rearview mirror, the GBHS Panthers officially end their season for the 2023 school year. The eight national qualifiers from Great Bend High School will spend the next month developing their skills and perfecting their performances for the National Speech and Debate Association national tournament this June in Phoenix, Arizona. The upcoming trip to Nationals will carry significant financial costs. TOPEKA — Kansas Tourism on Tuesday announced $421,820 in Attraction Development Grants has been awarded to 10 recipients, including the City of Lyons. The funding will be used to develop new tourism attractions or enhance existing sites across the state.

Lyons was awarded $13,120 for creation of the World’s Largest Salt Shaker.

Attraction Development Grants assist in the development of travel experiences that will influence visitors’ travel decisions. The program also spurs economic growth through the creation of jobs, capital investment, revenue and number of visits.

“These grants are essential investments in the growth and development of communities across the state,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Supporting new and exciting attractions enhances both the visitor experience and quality of life for existing Kansas residents.”

An additional $2,064,910 in matching funds across the state will result in a total of $3,441,517 that will be invested in the approved projects.

Lyons wins state grant for new tourist attraction

The 10th year of the Great Bend Sports Complex being home to
the Kansas Collegiate Athletics Conference baseball and softball championships
wrapped up this past weekend, and Great Bend Recreation Commission Director Chris
Umphres said there was a lot of exciting games this year. 
McPherson College won the baseball tournament and Avila University earned the
softball championship. Umphres updated the GBRC Board on Monday that usually
this tournament brings a bunch of rain to town. The four-day tournament
remained dry and for the most part on schedule. "We did have a one-hour lightning delay," said Umphres. "In that game, the score was 11-0 in the seventh inning. There was the hour lightning delay, came back and the game ended up being 11-10. That team that came back in the last two innings had the tying run at third base, they hit a line drive, but the third baseman Superman dove to catch it and end the game. There was some good baseball and softball games this year." 
The KCAC announced both the softball and baseball championships will remain in
Great Bend through the 2025 season. 
The Great Bend Rec will now get ready to host the Class 2-1A high school State Baseball
Tournament May 25-26.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities responded to an accident involving a school district vehicle just after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Barton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Chevy Tahoe driven by Levi&nbsp;Shuey, 19, Great Bend, was westbound on Highway 56 just east of Great Bend.

The SUV rear-ended a USD 440 Halstead-Bentley 2017 Ford Transit van driven by Timothy Warsnack, 48, Newton, that had slowed for a disabled vehicle in front of it.&nbsp; There were 8 juveniles on board the van. The KHP reported there were no injuries.

Many cities and municipalities have tried to warn citizens of the issues
that come from flushing cleaning wipes down the drain, and Great Bend Public
Works Director Jason Cauley reminds everyone again to only flush toilet paper and
human waste down the toilet. 
Cauley said the city still sees the negative effects of wipes clogging or
slowing down the sewer system. Not only can flushing wipes, or other
non-flushable items, cause problems for the city, it can cause issues in the
homeowner’s pipes before it even reaches the city’s main line. "Those wipes solidify and cause big blockages in your personal lateral to the main," said Cauley. "If it happens to make it to the sewer main then that's a big issue for us. Even though we maintain our lines on a regular basis, we can still get that buildup by the time we get back around to do something." 
Cauley said properly disposing of fats and grease from cooking is also
essential to keeping the drains clear. He encouraged residents to pour the
grease in a container, let it solidify and then throw it away in the trash. 
Even the wipes that are labeled “flushable” should not be flushed.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

A petition to disorganize the USD 112 Central Plains school district has been filed. The Wilson High School Future Committee asked the USD 112 Board of Education to delay the closure of Wilson High School for one year. With no action regarding the issue taken at Monday's board meeting, the petition was filed with Ellsworth County Tuesday morning. Long-time educator Roberta Meier, who helped file the petition, was disappointed the issue was not discussed Monday.

"That was very surreal because, with something this serious and historic, it shows their lack of understanding for what a disorganization is and how it will proceed," she said. "The only discussion was about who would pay for the election and the date."

Disorganization was brought up twice during Monday's board meeting. The body heard from Claflin resident Dave Wirth, who expressed frustration that only three of Wilson's 73 students visited Central Plains High School in Claflin after hearing about the closure in Wilson. He expressed further concern that voters may be willing to shut down their own elementary school in Wilson, and that no one is quite sure what disorganization would mean for USD 112.

"If you don't have any idea, you better find out, including the board members from Wilson, because I understand you're supporting this," Wirth said. "If you're not, I need to know now whether you are or aren't supporting this petition. Yes or no?"

Board Member Roger Robinson asked Wirth why he needed to know, and said Wirth did not need to know anything about him.  

"You're serving a public board?" Wirth asked. "Yes or no?"

Monday's meeting lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours. Late in the meeting, Superintendent Bill Lowry addressed the disorganization petition. He's been in touch with the Ellsworth County clerk's office and the state board of education, but answers about when the matter will be put on a ballot or who will pay for it are still undetermined.

"I just think it's important, if we get to that point, to try to educate all patrons on what 'yes' or 'no' means," Lowry told the board.

On Jan. 9, 2023, the USD 112 Central Plains Board of Education voted 5-2 to close Wilson High School at the close of the 2022-23 school year. The Wilson High School Future Committee was formed last October. The group visited Topeka several times to speak with state legislators about possible solutions. The disorganization petition will put the matter before voters in the district. If approved, the fate of the district would go before the state board of education. Beyond that, answers are few and far between.

"As far as precedence, there is none," Meier said. "When we asked the state how this would all play out and for advice, they just said basically we can ask the questions but there are no answers yet. We took an extra week to try to make sure we were getting this right."

"The only discussion was about who would pay for the election and the date."Disorganization was brought up twice during Monday's board meeting. The body heard from Claflin resident Dave Wirth, who expressed frustration that only three of Wilson's 73 students visited Central Plains High School in Claflin after hearing about the closure in Wilson. He expressed further concern that voters may be willing to shut down their own elementary school in Wilson, and that no one is quite sure what disorganization would mean for USD 112."If you don't have any idea, you better find out, including the board members from Wilson, because I understand you're supporting this," Wirth said. "If you're not, I need to know now whether you are or aren't supporting this petition. Yes or no?"Board Member Roger Robinson asked Wirth why he needed to know, and said Wirth did not need to know anything about him. "You're serving a public board?" Wirth asked. "Yes or no?"Monday's meeting lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours. Late in the meeting, Superintendent Bill Lowry addressed the disorganization petition. He's been in touch with the Ellsworth County clerk's office and the state board of education, but answers about when the matter will be put on a ballot or who will pay for it are still undetermined."I just think it's important, if we get to that point, to try to educate all patrons on what 'yes' or 'no' means," Lowry told the board.On Jan. 9, 2023, the USD 112 Central Plains Board of Education voted 5-2 to close Wilson High School at the close of the 2022-23 school year. The Wilson High School Future Committee was formed last October. The group visited Topeka several times to speak with state legislators about possible solutions. The disorganization petition will put the matter before voters in the district. If approved, the fate of the district would go before the state board of education. Beyond that, answers are few and far between."As far as precedence, there is none," Meier said. "When we asked the state how this would all play out and for advice, they just said basically we can ask the questions but there are no answers yet. We took an extra week to try to make sure we were getting this right."

The Wall That Heals has finally arrived. The Vietnam Veteran Memorial wall replica will make a tour through Barton County today, passing through Claflin and Hoisington before making its final stop in Great Bend. Starting Thursday, the wall will be open 24/7, but someone needs to put it up first. Former Great Bend High School Athletic Director David Meter is on the committee that helped bring the wall to Great Bend. He reached out to Panther football coach Erin Beck, who recruited some helpers. 

"He reached out several months ago about trying to get some volunteers to come out and help assemble this thing," Beck said. "I knew it would be a great opportunity for our kids to get involved, give back, and learn about what this wall means."

Approximately 55 of Beck's strength and conditioning students signed up for the project. Constructing the 375-foot wall is expected to take five to six hours Wednesday. The students will be provided breakfast and lunch for a day of hard work.

"Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., Cody Schmidt will bring a bus over," said Beck. "We'll load it up and head over there. Mr. Meter said they come in about 80-pound sections, so it will take a couple guys per section."

The Wall That Heals will depart Claflin at 1:40 p.m. today, passing through Hoisington before turning south to Great Bend. The escort should arrive in Great Bend by 2:30, taking the 281-Bypass to 10th Street. Residents are encouraged to show their patriotism on Main Street between Lakin and Broadway as the escort travels through downtown Great Bend. The wall will be on display at Al Burns Memorial Field from May 11-14.

Great Bend High students ready to construct The Wall That Heals

The Great Bend school district purchased the property at 1809 24th Street, just off the 281 Bypass, in September with early childhood education in mind. Monday night, the USD 428 Board of Education heard updates on the future district education center and preschool, which is slated to begin operations in the fall of 2024. Matt Hamm, vice president at Wichita-based &nbsp;Schaefer Architecture, said he has enjoyed coming up with a design.

"What a great building, first of all," he said. "It's not every day you get to, as an architect, work on something that's as new, as well put together as that building is, and turn it into something that's completely different than orginally was planned. Honestly, the building works fantastic for what the district is planning to do with it."

The nuts and bolts of the interior design includes 15 classrooms in the eastern half of the building. Each classroom can hold 15 students with up to one teacher and two assistants - that's room for approximately 450 students in half-day sessions. Each classroom will be approximately 600 square feet, and the rooms will be grouped together with shared restrooms, teacher workrooms, and a breakout space. A playground will be built to the east of the building.

The west side of the building will be used as the new district education center. Administrative offices will be built along the west wall.

"That open area on the left, on the administration side, that actually has those cubicles that are there already," said Superintendent Khris Thexton. "We don't know how they're going to be set up. We just know we're going to maximize the space. We'll probably have more cubicles than needed, but I'd rather have too many."

Hamm added that because the building will house up to 225 preschool-age children at a time, his firm is working to bring a preschool feel to the east side.

"There's still room for character in the building," he said. "With little kids, we don't want to be institutional about it. We'll open up the bag of design tricks and come up with some things where the kids can have an exciting space. We're maximizing the space, but we're going to be creative, too."

The property was valued at more than $4 million when the district purchased it for $1.3 million in September. CUNA Mutual agreed to donate the remaining $2.7 million. Architects put a budget of $4.37 million for the renovations inside, though that number will change once the project is put out for bids. Thexton said the district originally planned to use $2.2 million in federal ESSER dollars on the project, but that number can also change.

"It's one of those things where it's better to be lucky than good sometimes," he said. "Not that I want to go back and do COVID again to get money like this, but it is nice to have these funds that we can do something that we probably wouldn't have been able to do otherwise."

The district currently has limited half-day preschool capacity at Washington and Riley schools, as well as the full-day Little Panthers Preschool available to USD 428 staff with prorated tuition. Beyond a small enrollment fee, the half-day preschools are offered free of charge to the community. The state reimburses the district per pupil. 

"It just helps them at three and four years old start that educational foundation," said USD 428 Public Information Director Andrea Bauer. "Research shows the more you invest in young kids, the more it pays off through K-12 in their academic abilities."

Energy production payrolls in April rose to their highest total since March of 2020, but not quite to the pre-pandemic high reached in February of that year. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, oilfield services and equipment employment increased by 5,143 jobs in April to a total of more than 662-thousand people. Employment gains were seen in six of the seven job-categories tracked. Oil and gas infrastructure in western Alberta, Canada shut down over the weekend amid a state of emergency, as more than 100 different wildfires burned out of control. Some 30-thousand people evacuated, including operators and support teams in the Fox Creek energy cluster northwest of Edmonton. Operators shut in tens of thousands of barrels of oil and gas production and dozens of pipelines. Kansas regulators report 104 new intent-to-drill notices filed statewide last month. That's 448 intents so far this year, compared to 511 by the end of April last year. A search of the Web site of the Kansas Corporation Commission returns six new intents last month in Barton County, three in Ellis County and three in Stafford County. The tally so far this year in Barton County is 19 new intent-to-drill notices. Ellis County shows 16.&nbsp; Just three new intents on file in Russell County so far this year, and 15 in Stafford County. The weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes dropped by seven rigs, with the tally in Texas down nine. Separate counts show the count in the Permian Basin down five rigs and the Eagle Ford Basin was down three. The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service was down one east of Wichita at 12 active rigs. in Western Kansas the tally is up two at 22 rigs, with drilling underway Friday on leases in Barton and Ellis counties and about to commence on another lease in Stafford County. IOGSI reports 423 wells spudded statewide so far this year, down 57 wells from last year. Total footage is a little over 1.1 million feet, down 23% from a year ago. Kansas regulators gave their okay to 26 new drilling locations last week, 442 so far this year, compared to 502 a year ago. Out of 12 new drilling permits west of Wichita, two are in Ellis County and one is in Stafford County. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 42 newly-completed wells in Kansas during the week through May 4, 638 so far this year. That's up from 562 last year at this time. The Energy Information Administration last week (5/3) reported US stockpiles dropped 1.3 million barrels from a week earlier and are about two percent below the five year average for this time of year. US crude production in the week through April 28 averaged over 12.3 million barrels per day, an increase of more than 100,000 barrels per day over the week before, and nearly half a million barrels per day higher than a year ago. US crude imports increased slightly last week to 6.4 million barrels per day. The four week average is nearly five percent higher than the same four weeks last year. The world's largest crude exporter cuts prices for it's largest customers. Saudi Aramco sells about 60% of its crude shipments in Asia. Those customers next month will pay 25 cents-per-barrel less than this month. Closer to home, light sweet crude in New York was down more than three dollars Wednesday to settle at $68.60 per barrel, the lowest settlement since March 20th. Prices held steady by midday Thursday, with near-month Nymex crude trading a few cents under $69 and London Brent just under $73 a barrel. The government credits warmer winter weather for a dramatic drop in propane consumption. The Association of American Railroads reports the tally for the week through April 29th was up 15% compared to last year at this time. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, oilfield services and equipment employment increased by 5,143 jobs in April to a total of more than 662-thousand people. Employment gains were seen in six of the seven job-categories tracked. Oil and gas infrastructure in western Alberta, Canada shut down over the weekend amid a state of emergency, as more than 100 different wildfires burned out of control. Some 30-thousand people evacuated, including operators and support teams in the Fox Creek energy cluster northwest of Edmonton. Operators shut in tens of thousands of barrels of oil and gas production and dozens of pipelines. Kansas regulators report 104 new intent-to-drill notices filed statewide last month. That's 448 intents so far this year, compared to 511 by the end of April last year. A search of the Web site of the Kansas Corporation Commission returns six new intents last month in Barton County, three in Ellis County and three in Stafford County. The tally so far this year in Barton County is 19 new intent-to-drill notices. Ellis County shows 16.&nbsp; Just three new intents on file in Russell County so far this year, and 15 in Stafford County. The weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes dropped by seven rigs, with the tally in Texas down nine. Separate counts show the count in the Permian Basin down five rigs and the Eagle Ford Basin was down three. The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service was down one east of Wichita at 12 active rigs. in Western Kansas the tally is up two at 22 rigs, with drilling underway Friday on leases in Barton and Ellis counties and about to commence on another lease in Stafford County. IOGSI reports 423 wells spudded statewide so far this year, down 57 wells from last year. Total footage is a little over 1.1 million feet, down 23% from a year ago. Kansas regulators gave their okay to 26 new drilling locations last week, 442 so far this year, compared to 502 a year ago. Out of 12 new drilling permits west of Wichita, two are in Ellis County and one is in Stafford County. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 42 newly-completed wells in Kansas during the week through May 4, 638 so far this year. That's up from 562 last year at this time. The Energy Information Administration last week (5/3) reported US stockpiles dropped 1.3 million barrels from a week earlier and are about two percent below the five year average for this time of year. US crude production in the week through April 28 averaged over 12.3 million barrels per day, an increase of more than 100,000 barrels per day over the week before, and nearly half a million barrels per day higher than a year ago. US crude imports increased slightly last week to 6.4 million barrels per day. The four week average is nearly five percent higher than the same four weeks last year. The world's largest crude exporter cuts prices for it's largest customers. Saudi Aramco sells about 60% of its crude shipments in Asia. Those customers next month will pay 25 cents-per-barrel less than this month. Closer to home, light sweet crude in New York was down more than three dollars Wednesday to settle at $68.60 per barrel, the lowest settlement since March 20th. Prices held steady by midday Thursday, with near-month Nymex crude trading a few cents under $69 and London Brent just under $73 a barrel. The Department of Applied Business Studies, a division of the Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship at Fort Hays State University, announced seven graduating seniors as outstanding program students. The department houses three programs with various concentrations.

The Outstanding Student Award recognizes a graduating senior who has demonstrated exceptional performance in academics, leadership, and overall excellence in the respective program at FHSU. In addition, the student is a role model who positively characterizes the core values of the awarding program. The awards are given annually to one on-campus student and one online student. An international student was also recognized from an international partner school. Each student receives a plaque to celebrate this outstanding honor.
