The Great Bend City Council will have a chance to give approval for the
creation of an RV (recreational vehicle) park on east 10th Street.
Kyle Walter said the property at 833 10th Street, next to the Baltzell
Motel and HandleBar &amp; Grill, used to be a mobile home park and he plans to
put in 34 RV sites plus a bath house and laundry facility. 
To begin with, Walter plans for 14 pull-through sites and 20 back-in sites. The
sites will be hooked up to water, sewer and electrical. Users will pull through
the Baltzell property to access the park. In the future, Walter would like to
add a tornado shelter and fencing around the property. 
At the Great Bend Planning Commission meeting in April, Walter told the board
he did not anticipate long-term stays but if there were work crews that were in
the area then he would welcome them. The city council will be presented with motions to
approve a conditional use permit for an RV park in a C-2 zone. The meeting on May 15 begins at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman recently asked Facebook followers if they’d noticed an increase in moths this spring. Responses make it clear 2023 marks a banner year for an army cutworm miller/moth invasion. Great Plains residents can find scores of these creepy-crawlies tucked in every dark crevice in their homes, outbuildings, and vehicles. Observe drivers stopped at intersections. Windows roll down and waving hands shoo a handful of flying invaders outside where they belong. While humans see these as nothing but pests, grizzlies and black bears in the Rocky Mountain have a different perspective.

Every decade or so it seems, Great Plains grainfields and alfalfa patches host an exceptional hatch of army cutworms. Eventually these caterpillars morph into the seemingly dust-covered, wall speckling flibbertigibbets that drop from door lintels onto human necks and faces, an action that triggers the target to flap arms and slap wildly at the source of their gyrations. That sensation of multitudinous crawling legs and waving antenna brushing tender flesh is a nightmare come to life.

Anyone who’s experienced this or scrubbed greasy, brown moth plops off walls, windows, and lampshades has cursed these creatures. For what it’s worth, said bugs will get their due and not too far into the future. After spending 6 – 8 weeks tormenting residents of flyover country, these moths head to wild-flower covered Rocky Mountain slopes where they’ll sip nectar, enjoy cool temperatures, and tuck themselves into gazillions of fissures on a scree or boulder-filled incline. For a while, they’ll live the life of Reilly while victims left behind in Kansas roast under hot summer sun.

Sounds glorious until mid-August arrives. Shortening days, cooling temps, and perhaps some internal signal tells bears that also live in those mountains its time to pack on the pounds to prepare for winter torpor aka hibernation. Creatures that contentedly munched berries, grubs, grasses, and the occasional slow deer or elk suddenly crave high lipid calories. Those moths that drove plains folk nuts in May are 70% fat worth a ½ calorie apiece. One researcher called them “Lipid Chiclets.” Another “Bear Butter.”

Those dark hidey-holes on above-timberline slopes soon function as bear dining halls. Lumbering critters that entertained photographers and tourists at lower altitudes through June and July head for steep inclines to mine for moths. Scientists who study bear behavior and scat and record those efforts share that hyperphagic bears eat approximately 40,000 moths and pack on 20,000 fat calories daily for weeks.

Suddenly becoming a target must surprise insects who’ve spent the better part of summer enjoying chilly mornings, sampling wildflower nectar, and resting in the dark. Do moths about to be devoured hear bears clambering up their rock piles? What sounds do bear claws make as they lever through stony layers to reach that fat-scented insect? Does a moth have any sense of the devastating power of those teeth and that jaw before it slides down a bear gullet?

It’s been more than 20 years since I last researched and wrote about moths and bears. In the meantime, I’ve lived in grizzly country and watched them eat various meals. As I smack another moth to dusty smithereens, I can’t think of a better ending for its buddies who survive the migration to the high country.

🎤City Edition: Assist. City Administrator Logan Burns

Great Bend First United Methodist Church cut the red ribbon with the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce on May 4. This event was held in honor of the church's 150th anniversary.

The church, which serves the Great Bend area, offers various services to the community, including traditional and Revive! worship services on Sunday mornings, as well as youth groups for ages Pre-K to high school on Wednesday nights. In addition, the church operates a preschool and serves as a downtown meeting location for various groups and organizations.

"We are thrilled to celebrate this momentous occasion with the Great Bend community," said Rev. Tim Bever, Pastor of Great Bend First United Methodist Church. "For 150 years, our church has been a place of worship, fellowship, and service in the name of Jesus Christ. We are proud to continue this tradition and look forward to many more years of serving the Great Bend area."

Great Bend First United Methodist Church currently employs 14 individuals and has been in business for 150 years. While the church primarily serves the Barton County area, it also aims to attract businesses and workforce to the region.

Rev. Tim Bever also shared a message he wants people to know about their establishment. He emphasized that their focus is on following Jesus' commandment to love the Lord with all their heart, being mind, strength, and to love their neighbors as themselves, as stated in Mark 12:30-31. Bever also highlighted their commitment to fulfilling the Great Commission to "Go therefore and make disciples" as stated in Matthew 28:19.&nbsp;

Great Bend First United Methodist Church celebrates 150th anniversary

More than 58,000 names are inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Those names will be on display at Al Burns Field in Veterans Memorial Park through 2 p.m. Sunday. The Wall That Heals arrived in Great Bend Tuesday but officially opened to the public with a ceremony Thursday morning. Great Bend City Councilmember and Army Veteran Davis Jimenez spoke on behalf of the city.

"The city of Great Bend is truly honored to be able to pay tribute to such a wonderful endeavor," he said. "Thank you to each and every one of you for being here today, who helped make this happen for Great Bend. We're the only community in Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Nebraska this year to host the wall."

The Great Bend High School marching band played music prior to the ceremony. Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab, a Great Bend native and the son of a Vietnam veteran, encouraged those students and more to never forget what the names on the wall are about.

"To you youngsters behind me, a lot of folks in the stands, they know names on this wall," he said. "I'm going to encourage you, as the next generation, to get to know a name on this wall this weekend. Pray for their family and remember the history, lest we ever forget. One thing my father told me was, if you see a Vietnam vet, and I see some here today, is make sure you take the time to say 'Welcome home.' I'm so sorry you didn't get that."

Larry Parsons, chairperson of the Leadership Committee that helped bring The Wall That Heals to Great Bend. He read the names of six Barton County servicemen who were killed in Vietnam, and he accepted a wreath in honor of five more from Pawnee County. Tuesday's escort of The Wall That Heals  to Great Bend included the communities of Claflin and Hoisington to represent their own fallen soldiers. 

Fallen servicemen honored locally were: <a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/50241/CONRAD-F-STRAUB/">Conrad Francis Straub</a> was born in Great Bend in 1946, but officially listed Claflin as his home. He was killed in action on Feb. 27, 1967, in Tay Ninh.

<a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/43400/ROBERT-E-RIEDEL/">PFC Robert Eugene Riedel</a>, born in 1945, was a Hoisington High School graduate. He was killed in Quang Nam on Aug. 31, 1965, leaving behind two siblings.

<a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/47547/JOHN-S-SIMMONS/">2nd Lt. John Stephen Simmons</a> also called Hoisington home. He graduated in the top-10 percent of his class at Officer Training School. Born in 1945, Simmons was killed in action on March 1, 1968 in Dinh Tuong, leaving behind a wife a daughter.

<a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/898/KENT-L-AMERINE/">Kent L. Amerine</a>, a medic from Great Bend was born in 1943, and died Aug. 2, 1966. He left behind two sons.

<a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/45163/EDWARD-L-SAENZ/">PFC Edward Lloyd Saenz</a>, also of Great Bend, was born in 1948, and was killed in action on Oct. 2, 1968 in Quang Tri. He left behind three brothers and three sisters.

<a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/27203/CARL-F-KARST/">Col. Carl Frederick Karst</a> of Galatia was born in 1930, and was killed in action during a reconnaissance mission over Pleiku. His remains were returned 20 years after his death. He left behind a daughter and two sons.

He was killed in action on Feb. 27, 1967, in Tay Ninh.<a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/43400/ROBERT-E-RIEDEL/">PFC Robert Eugene Riedel</a>, born in 1945, was a Hoisington High School graduate. He was killed in Quang Nam on Aug. 31, 1965, leaving behind two siblings.<a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/47547/JOHN-S-SIMMONS/">2nd Lt. John Stephen Simmons</a> also called Hoisington home. He graduated in the top-10 percent of his class at Officer Training School. Born in 1945, Simmons was killed in action on March 1, 1968 in Dinh Tuong, leaving behind a wife a daughter.<a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/898/KENT-L-AMERINE/">Kent L. Amerine</a>, a medic from Great Bend was born in 1943, and died Aug. 2, 1966. He left behind two sons.<a href="https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/45163/EDWARD-L-SAENZ/">PFC Edward Lloyd Saenz</a>, also of Great Bend, was born in 1948, and was killed in action on Oct. 2, 1968 in Quang Tri. Carl Frederick Karst</a> of Galatia was born in 1930, and was killed in action during a reconnaissance mission over Pleiku. His remains were returned 20 years after his death. Tim Maier is the cooperator and K-State has an intensive management test trail looking as well looking at different practices of planting populations, fungicides, and fertility, along with many varieties to view and discuss.

CAMPBELL: Barton Co. field day May 18, Ellis Co. June 1

Marketing Maven Consulting, a brand management and design firm based in Great Bend, announced the addition of a new employee. Ashlie Thomas, a Kansas native, started with the company in May as a Communications and Project Assistant. 

“As our client base, our services and our project list continues to grow, we realized the need for another staff person who can handle the administrative, research and reporting functions that our clients depend on,” said Rachel Mawhirter, Marketing Maven’s owner and founder. “Ashlie is organized, efficient, and detail-oriented and we are confident she’ll be a huge asset to our team and to the companies we work with.”

Thomas grew up and graduated from Ellinwood in 2011 before graduating from Barton Community College in 2013 with an Associate’s in Applied Science in Business Management and Leadership. 

“In my short 30 years of life, I already have over a decade worth of experience in the field of business,” Thomas says. “I am very excited to expand my knowledge and skillset with the Marketing Maven team and transition into more of a creative roll.”

Thomas will be handling the firm’s administrative tasks, metrics reporting, writing assignments and other special projects. She will also assist with photography and photo editing, social media and other marketing functions that serve the firm’s growing list of clients. Outside of work, Thomas stays active volunteering for Central Kansas Christian Academy, coaching CKCA’s basketball teams, serving at First Southern Baptist Church and attending her children’s sports and activities. She also enjoys going to the lake, spending time with family and tackling lots of home improvement projects. Ashlie lives in Great Bend with her husband, Ethan, and two children, Aiden and Oaklyn.

Marketing Maven welcomes Ashlie Thomas to their staff

St. John and Macksville fired up the ovens for a good cause. On April 28, employees from the St. John and Macksville branches of SJN Bank of Kansas raised nearly $2,800 from a bake sale to benefit Central Kansas CASA, Inc. Each of the branches donated an additional $500 to the non-profit that helps abused and neglected children. SJN Senior Vice President Diane Fisher was happy to hand over the check last Friday. 

"We just really wanted to do something more than just the normal," she said. "We know there are kids out there that struggle and don't have the best life, and we wanted to be able to help in some small way."

The Kansas CASA Association is a network of 22 community-based programs that recruit and train volunteers to be advocates in court for abused and neglected children. Central Kansas CASA works within the boundaries of the 20th Judicial District, which includes Barton and Stafford counties. Executive Director Jennifer Gregg called the bake sale and donation a true gift.

"We really have one major fundraiser each year and that is our Chocolate Auction," she said. "We have recently lost some grant funding just due to funding shortages. For us, this is a huge blessing because it fills the gap of funding we had previously been receiving. We do operate off a very tight budget, so just knowing that the funds are there to keep operating as we have been is extremely precious to us."

Thirteen SJN employees from St. John, and three from the Macksville branch baked several tables of goodies for the sale.

But catching speeders is just one small part of being a law enforcement officer. For elected sheriffs, the office stretches even further. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir explained one of the biggest roles of his office.

"People don't realize it, but the main job of the sheriff, originally, and still is, is a responsibility to the district court to serve their papers," he said. "We're out serving thousands of pieces of civil process every year. I've got two guys, that's all they do is run around and serve process full-time, and the deputies always have a handful of civil process."

Subpoenas for defendants, victims, and witnesses are all served by the sheriff's office, as are other summonses to court, lawsuits, and Protection from Abuse/Stalking Orders issued by the court. Along with law enforcement calls, the sheriff's office assists on fire and EMS calls.

"It's been my experience over the years that all bad calls usually start with an ambulance being paged out," Bellendir said.

As the county law enforcement agency, deputies routinely assist municipal law enforcement agencies, and the deputies may also work outside county lines to assist other agencies.

Then there are the big trips. On April 19, William Thomas Frederick was arrested in Red Bluff, Calif. Frederick is a suspect in an April 1 police pursuit in which shots allegedly were fired at Hoisington Police Department officers.

"He was arrested on our warrant, so we'll be flying up there to get him in the next week or two and bringing him back down here to Kansas, extraditing him out of the state of California," said Bellendir. "We're moving prisoners every day: to and from the state penitentiary, from our jail to medical facilities. We are constantly moving prisoners. I have two guys, that's all they do is move prisoners around."

Bellendir, however, enjoys the job. If reelected, he will become Barton County's longest-serving sheriff in history on Dec. 5, 2025.

Bellendir: Sheriff's Office more than just writing speeding tickets

Patrick Hoffman is a busy man. The Barton County Counselor also serves as Reno County Counselor. In January 2022, the Barton County Commission changed its meeting day from Tuesday to Wednesday to accommodate Hoffman's schedule in Reno County. In May of this year, the Reno County Commission announced it was changing its meeting day from Tuesday to Wednesday. The Barton County Commission followed suit Wednesday morning, changing its meeting day back to Tuesdays. 

"Tuesdays have always worked better, I think, for the department heads and county operations, not just for the commissioners," said Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson. "If something happens over the weekend, that gives the department heads a day to figure out what's going on before they can come and present to us."

Per Kansas statute, the commission can change its meeting day through a resolution, which it did Wednesday morning. The resolution is effective July 1, 2023, and the first Tuesday meeting will be July 11 with the July 4 holiday falling on a Tuesday this year.

Not only has the new paint project at the City Auditorium in Great Bend
given the facility new life, it also has not interrupted the popular pickleball
matches yet. 

Renovaa Home Innovation completed the first section
of the auditorium last week by painting the north and east sides of the walking
path underneath the seating. Great Bend Recreation Commission Director Chris
Umphres said Renovaa will begin the south side this week. "It has definitely changed," said Umphres. "It's bright white and some serious blue on the columns. Renovaa will come back in August to do the main gym when we shut down like we normally do. When they start this week, they'll probably be here a week and a half." 
At the March Great Bend Rec Board meeting, Umphres noted it has been 30 to 40
years since the City Auditorium has been fully painted. Renovaa estimated the
project would take nine weeks to complete. In March, the board approved a
motion to accept the painting bid not to exceed $60,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"We have new American and Kansas flags," said Umphres. "We're ready to open back up after August with some new looks."

🎙Cougar Pause: Dietary Manager Coordinator Emily Cowles

More than 20 years have passed since USD 428 was a member of Hutchinson-based Educational Services and Staff Development Association of Central Kansas (ESSDACK). Monday night, the board of education voted to renew that membership for $18,545. Superintendent Khris Thexton said membership has a wealth of benefits for the Great Bend district.

"This is one of those that when you have a number of schools come together with these groups," he told the board, "they can offer these services for you where you don't necessarily have to have that staffing yourself."

ESSDACK serves more than 50 districts and non-profits with the goal of providing services that many districts cannot provide on their own. Dr. Chad Higgins, a former teacher and coach of the Lady Panther basketball team, was recently named executive director at ESSDACK.  

"When Dr. Higgins took over, the short year he's been in there has really beefed up what they're able to offer," Thexton said. "I really like what direction they're going, and I'd like to have access to them as well. It's just one more layer to help our staff, especially bringing in staff that doesn't have a lot of experience, to have access to more training and more opportunities."

ESSDACK provides everything from training opportunities and print solutions, and also runs seven learning centers, including the Barton County Academy.

Great Bend school district rejoining ESSDACK

She’s not meaning to throw shade to social media, but Rebecca McMahon knows that ‘Instagram Gardens’ aren’t likely to do well in Kansas’ climate.&nbsp;

“Many of those resources that you run across on Instagram are from the Pacific Northwest or the Northeast or even the Great Lakes region,” said McMahon, administrator of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/localfoods/index.html" target="_blank">Kansas State University’s local foods systems program</a>, who grew up in the cooler climate of northern Wisconsin.&nbsp;

“All of those places have much milder climates and much cooler summers than we have in Kansas, so it’s so critical to know what to plant and when in Kansas because the weather is going to fight back.”&nbsp;

McMahon is a co-author of the newest version of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/S51.pdf" target="_blank">Kansas Garden Guide</a>, which was released this spring and available online from the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">K-State Research and Extension bookstore</a>.&nbsp;

“The Kansas Garden Guide has been around a long time; in fact, I have a copy from 1983 that is about 22 pages and includes line drawings,” McMahon said. “I’ve even had folks tell me that they have versions from the 1970s and earlier. So, as with many things, every so often they need an update and some changes to better reflect the needs of the gardeners that use the guide.”&nbsp;

McMahon said the Kansas Garden Guide was last updated in 2010 with 76 pages. The 2023 version has expanded to 202 pages with full-color pictures and illustrations. The intent of the Kansas Garden Guide is to provide assistance specific to gardening in Kansas’ climate.&nbsp;

“I think one of the big changes is there's a lot more emphasis in this guide on options for folks with smaller gardens, like we often see in our more urban settings… and accessible gardens for folks that either don't have space or the physical ability to have a large traditional type of garden,” McMahon said.&nbsp;

Much of the content is also published with new gardeners in mind, she adds.&nbsp;

“One of the things I noticed when I started looking at older versions of the guide is that there was this assumption that people had grown up as gardeners,” McMahon said. “But what we see anymore is that many of our gardeners are not coming to it with experience. Maybe their parents, grandparents or great grandparents didn’t grow up around the garden.”&nbsp;

McMahon said experienced gardeners also will benefit because “we’re always learning more.” She said one of the advancements in the past decade has been agriculture’s understanding of soil chemistry, including organic matter and soil biology.&nbsp;

In addition to horticulture experts, the Kansas Garden Guide includes updated information from K-State specialists in entomology, plant pathology, food safety and more.&nbsp;

BOOR: Kansas Garden Guide

Tina Harkness continues to work one-on-one with clients at Sunflower Diversified Services, while simultaneously taking on her new responsibilities as director of Case Management.

Sunflower serves people with developmental disabilities and delays in central Kansas.

“I have been involved in Case Management here for the past few years and enjoy finding ways to help make life a little easier for the individuals we serve,” Harkness said. “In Case Management, we help people get the resources they need to enjoy more independent lives.”

For example, a client needed a handicapped-accessible shower, while another had to have a better ramp to his front door.

“We were able to make these things happen by collaborating with clients’ managed care organizations (MCOs),” Harkness commented. “Every situation is different but, in many cases the MCO, charitable foundations and private donations combine to help us finance these resources.”

Case managers also are available for children who need a helping hand. In one case, a single mom had concerns about her son who has autism.

“When he went outside, he would just take off running,” Harkness recalled. “Now they have a nice fenced in backyard where he can run and play safely.”

In her new director’s position, Harkness supervises three other case managers; the four-person team cares for approximately 120 clients.

“All of us enjoy being the go-to person for any questions or needs individuals have,” Harkness said. “They are reassured because they know we are always here – whether they need just a little help or are more severely disabled.”

During her first year at Sunflower, Harkness was a goal-achievement facilitator and has been in Case Management for the last four years. Her background also includes 10 years at Larned State Hospital and one year at Charter Hospital in Wichita; she served as a mental-health technician at both locations.

Harkness also was employed as a teaching assistant in USD 428.

“Our work in Case Management is rewarding on so many levels,” she summarized. “Sunflower is the best place to work. It is family-oriented and offers a great working environment.”

Originally from Larned, Harkness now lives in Great Bend. She has four children and 11 grandchildren.

Shelby Zuniga, Sunflower executive director, commented that “Tina is so knowledgeable and passionate about the work she does and cares deeply about all the individuals she supports.

“In addition, Tina donates a ton of personal time to assist with Sunflower fundraisers and special events. She is a perfect addition to our leadership team.”

Sunflower serves infants, toddlers and adults in Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties. It is in its 58th year.

Harkness promoted to Sunflower’s director of Case Management

PAWNEE COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 8a.m. Wednesday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Ford F150 driven by Colby A. Ryan, 15, Kinsley, was northbound on 270th Avenue one mile east of Rozel.&nbsp;

The driver failed to stop at a stop sign at Kansas 156 and struck a westbound 2008 Nissan Van driven by James B. Kirby, 85, Larned. Both vehicles came to rest in the northwest ditch.

EMS transported Ryan and Kirby to the hospital in Larned. Ryan was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

15-year-old, 85-year-old drivers hospitalized after Pawnee Co. crash

Low-income Kansas seniors may be eligible for a program that provides coupons to purchase fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables and honey at farmers markets in selected counties throughout the state.

The Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (KSFMNP) is providing seniors who meet age and income requirements with $50 in coupons to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from authorized farmers at local participating farmers markets, June 1 through September 15, 2023. Coupons are available in $5 increments.

To be eligible to receive KSFMNP coupons, the following criteria must be met:

1. Age: A senior must be 60 years old or older, or at least 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization, on the day the money is issued.

2. Income level: A senior’s annual gross household income (before taxes are withheld) must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty level. For example, a household of one must have an annual gross income at or below $26,973, or a monthly gross income at or below $2,248.

Applications for the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program will be available starting on June 1 at the Barton County Health Department. Seniors may apply on-site from Monday - Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM.
