What would Valentine's Day be without a little puppy love? Eagle Radio debuted its Puppy-Grams this year. Director of Promotions Shannon Towns called it a fun way to celebrate Valentine's Day and benefit the Golden Belt Humane Society.

"Eagle Radio teamed up with the Golden Belt Humane Society and GB Tarp Company to bring you guys Puppy Grams this Valentine's Day," she said. "It was $25 to participate. That got you 15 minutes of puppy kisses, puppy snuggles, and a little candy with a little Valentine's message."

Participants could choose a puppy or an older dog for their Puppy-Gram. Eagle Radio and Golden Belt Humane Society staff made several stops within 15 miles of Great Bend Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to deliver the special gifts.

"We talked about doing this last year and ran out of time," Towns said. "This year, we were able to go into it full force and we're hoping to grow it again next year."

Puppy-Grams may be extended beyond the 15-mile radius next year so more people can enjoy the unique surprise. All proceeds from the Puppy-Grams benefit the animals at Golden Belt Humane Society.

Barton CC students named to President’s List for fall 2023

The science of reading has become a big part of the elementary education process. Monday night, the USD 428 Board of Education heard from several teachers and administrators in a first reading of suggested changes to the Great Bend district's K-6 English Language Arts curriculum. If approved, the district will spend $387,427 for the new curriculum until the next update in seven years. Amber Shattuck, first-grade teacher at Eisenhower Elementary and ELA curriculum committee member, explained why the group chose HMH Into Reading over Savvas My View.

"A lot of us teachers have been dedicated to learning more about the science of reading, how our kids best learn to read, and how we can best support them as they learn to read," she said. "We've been going through the LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training and trying to get as many teachers to join us in the LETRS training because we've been able to really see the benefits of that. This curriculum is really nice because it just aligns really well with that. 

"It already incorporates a lot of those strategies and things we've been learning and practicing in our LETRS training. It's all built into the curriculum, which has been really nice because the curriculum now is not aligned to the science of reading so it's more work on us as teachers because we have to try to add all that in."

Director of Teaching JoAnn Blevins explained that curriculum review is a three-year process, with a review of standards and available resources completed in year one, and a pilot program with the new curriculum done in year two. Year three is the implementation of the new curriculum. Tandi Mai, instructional coach at Eisenhower and newly selected principal for the Little Panthers Preschool, said this year's pilot program went well.

"With your support with the LETRS training we've been able to implement in this district, this was probably one of the most well-informed pilot decisions because every feedback piece that came back through off both pilot resources was based off the science of reading," she said. "These teachers pulled that knowledge right in there, so I really feel like we had some great discussions. That came from your support with the LETRS initiatives and getting our teachers involved in that."

Some benefits of the new curriculum include highly-credential authors with education experience, interactive videos, support for diverse learners, and multicultural stories. Modules are broken down into three and four-week sections, with each module carrying a central theme and incorporating social and emotional learning. One big benefit is a consumable workbook for each student that allows the students to highlight or make notes in the text.

The original bid from HMH came in at $1.1 million. Board Member Chad Burroughs relayed concerns from one teacher who thought the committee lacked transparency and, based on the change in price, made cuts to the curriculum from what was originally presented to teachers. Assistant Superintendent John Popp said that was not the case.

"It's all about getting every teacher exactly what they need to correctly deliver the program as it's designed," he said. "There's nothing that was cut out. Most of the cost that was cut out was student numbers and intervention materials. That was the large majority of what was cut out."

Blevins reiterated that HMH's original proposal included 1,400 licenses for HMH's supplemental Waggle program. That figure was reduced to 400 based on expected need. The district also opted out of a classroom library and assessment tool that were deemed redundant to what the district currently provides.

The $387,000 price tag includes materials for 200 students at each grade level K-6 for the next seven years. As it was a first read Monday night, the board took no action on approving the curriculum.

Winter may be imposing its lull on some people’s exercise programs, but K-State Research and Extension, Cottonwood District is gearing up for one their most popular programs.

We have our thoughts squarely fixed on spring’s warmer days and a program that is nearing a quarter century of getting folks moving.

Walk Kansas is a team-based challenged that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike swim or do whatever they need to live more healthfully. The program routinely draws more than 5,000 participants in Kansas and across the country.

Walk Kansas was founded in 2001 on the principle that if teams of four to six people would meet the minimum guidelines for physical activity over eight weeks, they could collectively and virtually walk across the state of Kansas – or approximately 423 miles.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week – or about 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

When you think about a moderate activity, there’s an easy way to gauge if you’re getting that. It’s called the Talk Test. Whatever activity you’re doing, if you can barely have a conversation, but not sing, then you’re exercising at a moderate level.

The Cottonwood District is encouraging those interested in Walk Kansas to begin forming their teams now. Registration opens on March 4, and the eight-week challenge will run from March 31 through May 25. Walk Kansas is also open to those who want to take on the eight-week program by themselves, rather than forming teams. Cost is $10 per person.

Walk Kansas is open to participants beyond Kansas. In fact, captains can form their team with family members or friends who live in other states or even other countries. Each team member walks when they want, where they want.

The bottom line is to just move, no matter what type of activity you enjoy, to limit those periods of time when you’re sitting. A lot of us have jobs in which we do more sitting and working in front of computers, and that’s exhausting in it’s own way. So, we need to get into the habit of getting up every 30 minutes, which is ideal, but at least once an hour to move around a little bit. That’s a habit that you can get into that is really good.

Obesity and overweight rates have been going up rapidly in our state and country. Any way we can find to move ourselves and our children will be beneficial. Walk Kansas is open to school age children as well. This might be a good incentive to get kids moving!

 </figure>Winter may be imposing its lull on some people’s exercise programs, but K-State Research and Extension, Cottonwood District is gearing up for one their most popular programs.We have our thoughts squarely fixed on spring’s warmer days and a program that is nearing a quarter century of getting folks moving.Walk Kansas is a team-based challenged that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike swim or do whatever they need to live more healthfully. The program routinely draws more than 5,000 participants in Kansas and across the country.Walk Kansas was founded in 2001 on the principle that if teams of four to six people would meet the minimum guidelines for physical activity over eight weeks, they could collectively and virtually walk across the state of Kansas – or approximately 423 miles.The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week – or about 30 minutes a day, five days a week.When you think about a moderate activity, there’s an easy way to gauge if you’re getting that. It’s called the Talk Test. Whatever activity you’re doing, if you can barely have a conversation, but not sing, then you’re exercising at a moderate level.The Cottonwood District is encouraging those interested in Walk Kansas to begin forming their teams now. Registration opens on March 4, and the eight-week challenge will run from March 31 through May 25. Walk Kansas is also open to those who want to take on the eight-week program by themselves, rather than forming teams. Cost is $10 per person.Walk Kansas is open to participants beyond Kansas. In fact, captains can form their team with family members or friends who live in other states or even other countries. Each team member walks when they want, where they want.The bottom line is to just move, no matter what type of activity you enjoy, to limit those periods of time when you’re sitting. A lot of us have jobs in which we do more sitting and working in front of computers, and that’s exhausting in it’s own way. So, we need to get into the habit of getting up every 30 minutes, which is ideal, but at least once an hour to move around a little bit. That’s a habit that you can get into that is really good.Obesity and overweight rates have been going up rapidly in our state and country. Any way we can find to move ourselves and our children will be beneficial. Walk Kansas is open to school age children as well. KOERNER: Ready, set...Walk Kansas registration opens March 4

One option is to go without property casualty insurance. USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton said that's not really an option at all for coverage on the district's buildings in Great Bend. District Administration continues to work through damage from the July 16 wind and hail storm that ripped through the city. Thexton said FEMA will be in town on Feb. 21 to evaluate the damage.

"We're actually going through the process of updating our paperwork, also discussing and verifying damages throughout the district," he said. "Currently, our number is at $2.1 million. That could go up depending on what more is found. The best thing about this process is, if nothing else, it gets all that information in one place so we have it ready and don't miss something, especially when it comes to insurance."

The damage will continue to impact the district as insurance premiums increase. USD 428 paid just under $467,000 for property casualty insurance last year, up from $286,000 the year before that. A total for next year's premiums will not be available until June.

"As inflation went up, the cost to replace your buildings went up, thus your insurance has gone up as well," said Thexton. "We were told at our meeting a month ago, they're expecting everybody to go up at least 10-15 percent. I'm figuring with our damage at $2.1 million, we're going to be over that. To what level, I don't know."

Thexton said many insurance companies have dropped school district coverage or priced districts out of coverage. Others have converted to a one-percent deductible on each item damaged. Thexton said USD 428's $25,000 deductible against any damage in the district is still the best option moving forward.
