Reynolds named 'Employee of the Quarter' in Russell

The official start to pool season is just over a month out. The City of
Great Bend still has lifeguard positions listed on their job openings page and
pool preparation is underway at the Wetlands Waterpark. 

Great Bend Assistant
City Administrator Logan Burns said all the steps are being taken to open the
pool over the Memorial Day weekend.


"We have platforms for the slides that are being repaired with some new fiberglass coating," said Burns. "We've already completed a repair on one of the smaller slides in the kid's section. We have six new picnic tables that are being assembled."

The pool will get power washed, the seams will get re-caulked, crews will
repaint the pool and eventually fill it up with water in mid-May.


Burns also updated the Great Bend City Council this week on the splash pad project
at Veterans Memorial Park. Fencing is set to begin this week with framing
possibly starting over the weekend on the 50' x 70' water feature.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

A Great Bend teenager has officially hit the airwaves. Jadynce Schroeder, who goes by the stage name Jadynce Jean, began performing the "Star Spangled Banner" in front of crowds at the age of six. Ten years later, she has officially released her first recording. She penned the lyrics to "Little Miss Perfect" at the age of 13, and the song debuted on various streaming platforms Monday.

"I started voice lessons when I was in first grade," Shroeder said. "I just always loved singing and I was definitely passionate about it. The older I got, the more I became obsessed with singing and just knew that's what I wanted to do."

Schroeder began opening for bigger bands at the age of 13. In 2021, the country music band Ricochet performed at the Barton County Fair. Schroeder opened for that band that produced three straight Top Ten hits in the country charts on their debut album in 1995.

"It just so happened there was a manager there," she said. "He talked to me afterward and said he'd be really excited to work with me. He took me under his wing from that point and booked me gigs - just me and my acoustic guitar for a summer and a half. Last year, he put me with a band he knew."

Schroeder has performed throughout Kansas. Last year, the Jadynce Jean Band opened for Three Dog Night, a band that had 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, including three No. 1 singles, in the late 1960s and 70s. Even in front of some 5,000 fans at the Nebraska State Fair, Schroeder said she felt more energy than nerves.

"I've just decided it's going to be what it's going to be when you get up there, so may as well have the best time possible," she said. "If you love what you're doing, it's not work."

The band will carry its momentum into the summer months with performances booked in Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. Schroeder opened for Cooper Allen and Thomas Mac in Hays in February, and will open for acts like Justin Moore this year. But getting a song recorded in the studio and releasing it has been a big step in the right direction.

"It's a little nerve-racking because, obviously, you want everyone to love it and you know that's not possible," said Schroeder. "We're getting really positive feedback and it's a large step. I think, for us, it's a sigh of relief that we are still making steps forward and we're not just going to plateau, that we're still driving forward to get better and take the next step to become more professional as we go."

Schroeder has about a dozen more tracks ready to go and plans to record more songs in the coming months. Sandy Holguin Lopez is a special education paraprofessional at Great Bend High School and loves seeing the smiles on her students’ faces each day. So, when she started having debilitating back pain after a knee surgery in summer 2023, she knew she needed to take care of it.

Sandy describes herself as kind of a difficult patient when it comes to surgery and therapy. She has canceled surgeries because she was nervous and didn’t want to go through the physical therapy and healing process that was required afterward.

Following her knee surgery, the back pain she was experiencing eventually prevented her from performing everyday activities and threatened her ability to do her job. That was when she knew it was time to overcome her fears and get some help.

One of Sandy’s daughters recommended physical therapists at The University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend. Her mobility is important to her, and while Sandy was still hesitant, she agreed to at least meet with them.

At St. Rose Medical Pavilion, Sandy met Melanie Schroeter, physical therapist, and her team: Megan Beahm, physical therapist; Brooke Churchill, physical therapy assistant; Andie Trevino, patient service representative; and Madelyn Schartz, third-year physical therapy student.

“I decided it couldn’t hurt to check it out after my daughter recommended the health system,” Sandy said. “And once I met Melanie and her team, I loved them. They made me feel welcome and at home.”

Melanie got Sandy set up on a treatment plan that would get her back to doing all the things she loved to do and help her regain her mobility. One of Sandy’s main concerns was being able to walk up and down stairs and she hadn’t been able to do that.

“We did a lot of exercises and activities that I didn’t think were possible for me to do,” Sandy said. “But Melanie gave me confidence and helped me the entire time.”

Some of the exercises Sandy received were tailored to her daily needs, such as using the step machine. Sandy has stairs in her home and had been unable to climb them. Melanie’s treatment plan also gave Sandy back her ability to feel comfortable walking and at a faster pace than she has been able to for a while.

“When Sandy came in for therapy for her back, her nervous system was in fight-or-flight mode and that made her muscles unable to relax,” Melanie said. “She learned techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing that allowed her nervous system to relax and was able to progress to therapy exercises. She made great progress and continues to use the tools she learned so she can stay pain-free.”

“I knew Melanie and her team were helping me,” Sandy said. “When they recommended a certain exercise during my sessions, I said, ‘Why not?’ I trust them.”

She said she is walking faster after her therapy and has virtually no back pain. Knowing that she will need surgery on her other knee in the future, Sandy trusts that she can do whatever needs to be done when it happens. She has some words of advice for others as well.

“If you are like me, who is afraid of going to physical therapy, don’t be,” Sandy said. “It really helps, especially when you work with a great team with great people. Melanie’s team is there because they want to help.”

One of Sandy’s main concerns was being able to walk up and down stairs and she hadn’t been able to do that.“We did a lot of exercises and activities that I didn’t think were possible for me to do,” Sandy said. “But Melanie gave me confidence and helped me the entire time.”Some of the exercises Sandy received were tailored to her daily needs, such as using the step machine. Sandy has stairs in her home and had been unable to climb them. Melanie’s treatment plan also gave Sandy back her ability to feel comfortable walking and at a faster pace than she has been able to for a while.“When Sandy came in for therapy for her back, her nervous system was in fight-or-flight mode and that made her muscles unable to relax,” Melanie said. “She learned techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing that allowed her nervous system to relax and was able to progress to therapy exercises. She made great progress and continues to use the tools she learned so she can stay pain-free.”“I knew Melanie and her team were helping me,” Sandy said. “When they recommended a certain exercise during my sessions, I said, ‘Why not?’ I trust them.”She said she is walking faster after her therapy and has virtually no back pain. Knowing that she will need surgery on her other knee in the future, Sandy trusts that she can do whatever needs to be done when it happens. She has some words of advice for others as well.“If you are like me, who is afraid of going to physical therapy, don’t be,” Sandy said. “It really helps, especially when you work with a great team with great people. Physical therapy helps Great Bend High School para recover

On Tuesday, April 16, Great Bend Middle School students Callie Umphres and Sydney Bailey participated in the Kansas Entrepreneurship Competition (KEC) held at K-State. They emerged as finalists and won a significant cash prize. Additionally, they each received $50 for completing a Feasibility 101 mini-course before the competition. 

Their business, Aerial View, combines the capabilities of a drone with high-quality photography and videography. Callie and Sydney spent countless hours learning how to operate the drone and improve the composition of their photos and videos. They registered their business as a conceptual business since they cannot legally fly a drone for commercial purposes without a remote pilot license, which they cannot obtain until they are sixteen. 

Consequently, they cannot accept payment at this time. However, they are taking up jobs and working for free to build their business portfolio while anticipating business upgrades and changes to compete again next year. 

Before the KEC competition, Callie and Sydney won the Barton County Youth Entrepreneurship Competition (YEC), which automatically qualified them to participate in Manhattan at the state-level competition. 

Having competed in the YEC competition last year, they knew the amount of work it would take to create a business that could take them to the state level. As soon as school started in the fall, they began developing their business, writing an executive summary, and completing a thorough financial analysis. They also put together an informational booth for a trade show that was open to the public at both competitions. 

Unlike the YEC competition, which had a single presentation to multiple judges, the KEC competition consisted of three separate boardroom presentations with two different judges in each room. They had to spend ten minutes in each boardroom presenting and answering the judges' questions.&nbsp;

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Friday, April 12 to celebrate the Grand Opening of Bomgaars at 5320 10th Street in Great Bend.&nbsp;

At the Grand Opening, Bomgaars treated visitors to cake and a large selection of register-to-win prizes. They also organized a hot dog lunch fundraiser for the Golden Belt Humane Society, inviting everyone to join in and support the cause.

With 23 faces on staff, Bomgaars' addition to the community has brought a sense of enthusiasm among local residents since taking over Orscheln Farm &amp; Home on Oct. 12, 2022. They offer a wide range of products for farm, home, and everything in between.

From Monday to Saturday, Bomgaars is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Serving communities from the Midwest to the Rockies, Bomgaars has stores in 180 locations, providing goods and services to people across the region.

Ellinwood Hospital &amp; Clinic hosted Mr. Kern’s Industrial Education class from Ellinwood High School for a tour through the new hospital &amp; clinic led by Bill Athey, Project Manager for EHC. The students were able to see the progress of the hospital from when they took their last tour back in September of 2023. 

"This opportunity allowed them to see and learn about the hospital construction early on when it was just steel framing and exposed electrical,"&nbsp;said Kile Magner, CEO of Ellinwood Hospital &amp; Clinic. "This time, they were able to see the hospital with actual walls and learn about a mechanical room full of equipment that runs the facility." 

The students also received the opportunity to learn first hand from workers on-site about the importance of trade professions and what those workers were accomplishing and why it is crucial for the new hospital.

The hospital is making head way and is still on target to be fully operational on Aug. 1. With rooms being near complete and ready for the next step of getting equipment &amp; furniture set up and installed, you can see the stark contrast between space and design of the current hospital versus the new hospital. It is equally as exciting to see the design and layout of the departments at the new hospital &amp; clinic such as the new state of the art Therapy Services Department, and the all new Surgical Services.&nbsp;

"It was truly inspiring to witness the tour of the high school students because we are creating a space for future generations to be a part of building a healthier tomorrow," said Manger. "By igniting their passion in different fields, whether they are trade or medical related, we are supporting their own growth and allowing them to learn along the way. Larned's city-wide garage sale is April 27

Thanks to the volunteer efforts of a local firefighter, parents in Barton County can rest a little easier.

Cody Ruble, Great Bend Fire Department captain and paramedic, also serves as a car seat technician and was recently nominated as National Car Seat Technician of the Year by the National Child Passenger Safety Board.

“I got certified because I saw there was a need for it,” Ruble said. “We received calls daily from people asking if we checked car seats.”

At that time, they did not.&nbsp; Now, however, thanks to Ruble’s efforts, citizens can not only have him assist in the installment of their child’s car seat, but the fire department can also provide car seats to those in need through a program with Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office.

Ruble must continue to be recertified annually, including checking a certain number of car seat installations every year.&nbsp; He must also pass an exam and provide community education, something he does multiple times a year with the community baby shower.&nbsp;

“I must also obtain a certain number of continuing education hours which can consist of online training, as well as conferences,” he said.&nbsp;

Since August, the department has handed out, free of charge, 12 car seats, and average around 30 per year.&nbsp; Ruble has assisted in the installation or inspection of around 100 car seats.&nbsp;

Great Bend firefighter serving as child car seat technician

Falling is a serious concern for many older adults. With age, bones become fragile, and the risk of injury increases. Fall-related injuries can also result in decreased mobility and reduced independence. As the leading cause of death from injury, there is good reason why many people fear falling with age.

The risk of falling increases when we get older due to several factors such as the decline in senses and loss of muscle mass. Both of these can contribute to a lack of balance which many older adults struggle with. In fact, balance starts to decline as early as age 50 and reduced vision, strength, and flexibility can all play a part.

The good news is that there are proven ways to improve balance and reduce the risk of falling. Increasing strength, focusing on unilateral movements, improving flexibility, and concentrating on vestibular health can all help.

Strength training with dumbbells, resistance bands, or body weight can increase muscle mass and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Resistance exercises help build stabilizing muscles and increase the control of movement.

Unilateral movements also contribute to better balance by increasing the time spent on a single side of the body. These exercises focus on practicing balance and improving coordination while strengthening the body. Including unilateral movements such as walking, climbing stairs, riding a bike, or tai chi can help.

Flexibility training is another key component to improve posture and increase range of motion. When the body is tight, everyday tasks may seem difficult to complete. Bending over to tie shoes or reaching high into a cabinet can be challenging. However, yoga and daily stretching are two ways to work on flexibility that contribute to better balance.

Other factors that affect balance may not be as obvious. A prime example of this is a compromised vestibular system. This is an intricate structure that is located within the ears, and it relays information to the brain regarding orientation and motion. As a person ages, the

vestibular system tends to decline and make balance more difficult. However, exercises that stimulate the vestibular system produce information for the brain to interpret. With repetition, the brain can learn to process this information more accurately. These exercises can include slow movements of bending, turning the head, and stabilizing the eyes. A professional, such as a physical therapist or doctor can provide specific vestibular therapy.

As you can see, balance is complex. The brain interprets information from several senses through the eyes, muscles, and vestibular system to produce stability. When any of these systems are not functioning properly, balance can be compromised. So, it is crucial to focus on strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, and repairing vestibular health which can be extremely beneficial for improving balance and reducing the risk of falling.

Motorists driving through the 4900 block of 10th Street in Great
Bend may have noticed large amounts of water running over a portion of the
sidewalk on the south side of the street.

Anderson said there is an issue with the water meter, coming from the sprinkler
system, at Aaron’s.


"Ultimately, that water leak is saturating the ground where that sidewalk is," said Anderson. "More importantly, the engineered curb we have running along that highway...it's very important we protect the integrity of that. We'll be chasing that."

Contacting the local manager and reaching out to the district manager, Anderson
said the city is receiving legal advice on how to handle the situation. The
city will continue to investigate what actions they can take regarding the
water leak.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Great Bend seeking legal advice for water leak on 10th Street

Two years ago, approximately 1,600 people took part in the inaugural Great Bend Earth Day Celebration. This year’s third-annual free event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 20 at Great Bend Zoo, is expected to be just as well attended. The Great Bend Zoo, Rosewood ECycle and Great Bend Dairy Queen are hosting the event. They are being joined by 10 other vendors for the local event, which commemorates the worldwide Earth Day effort that raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources.

The local come-and-go celebration occurs two days ahead of the official 54th anniversary of Earth Day, which is recognized as the planet’s largest annual civic event, celebrated each year on April 22. Events are coordinated globally to the impact of 1 billion people celebrating the day in more than 193 countries. The theme for the official 54th anniversary of Earth Day is “Planet vs. Plastics.”

On the local front, a primary reason for the expected robust attendance this year is the scheduled appearance of “Clifford The Big Red Dog,” with Smoky Hills PBS incorporating its Family Fun Day with Earth Day Celebration festivities. Crowds lined up at Great Bend Zoo two years ago when Smoky Hills PBS offered a meet and greet with Curious George during a sunny and pleasant day.

“We can’t guarantee perfect weather like we had two years ago, but we are seeing a lot of buzz surrounding the appearance of Clifford, similar to what we saw two years ago with Curious George,” said Ashley Burdick, Great Bend Zoo curator. “We’re excited about this year’s event because of Clifford’s appearance, but also because we have a record number of vendors and a myriad of activities planned. We’re confident that children will enjoy a fun-filled day at this year’s celebration.”

Fresh off of his Barton Community College men’s basketball national championship mascot duties, Bart The Cougar will make a special appearance to meet and greet children. He will be joined by BCC’s STEM Club with a fun interactive booth for children. Also participating for the first time is Sunflower Recycling Center, and Face Painting will be available at this year’s event.

Returning vendors this year are Kansas Wetlands Education Center, Heartland Farm, Great Bend Zoological Society, Women For Kansas, and ‘Read With Me’ program members Luna and Glenn.

Great Bend Dairy Queen will issue a coupon for a free small ice cream cone to the first 500 youth participants that day. In addition, there will be giveaways to the first 500 children in attendance.

Even if children aren’t among the first 500 visitors in attendance, there will be plenty to see and do during Great Bend Earth Day Celebration, said Burdick.

How would you help? National Crime Victims' Rights Week is April 21-27. At Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting, Camila Komarek, the victim advocate with the county attorney's office, read a proclamation in support of the week. This year's theme is, "How Would You Help? Options, Services, and Hope for Crime Survivors."

"This year's theme is a call to action for all of us to create safe environments for crime victims to share what happened to them. By doing so, we are able to offer support options for life-saving services and, most importantly, hope."

The national Office for Victims of Crimes (OVC) was established in 1988 through an amendment to the Victims of Crime Act of 1984. Since then, millions of dollars have been invested annually in victim compensation and assistance in all U.S. states and territories. The Barton County Attorney's Office is one of the local arms providing that assistance.

"The Barton County Attorney's Office, along with community agencies, provides support and helps guide victims throughout the criminal justice process, whether it is immediately following the crime, during the criminal justice process, or after the prosecution has taken place and the case is closed," Komarek said.

Barton Co. proclaims April 21-27 as National Crime Victims' Rights Week

The American Public Power Association (APPA) has recognized the City of Russell Electric Utility with a “Certificate of Excellence in Reliability” for achieving exceptional reliability in 2023. &nbsp;The APPA compared the reliability data of the City of Russell’s Utility through the eReliability Tracker to the national reliability data collected by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. &nbsp; Russell’s Electric Utility is in the top 25% of all utilities in the U.S. for the System Average Interruption Duration Index based on the EIA data in 2018 – 2022, qualifying for the 2023 Certificate of Excellence in Reliability. &nbsp;Among the more than 2,000 public utilities honored nationwide, the City of Russell Electric Utility stood out as one of the seven recipients in Kansas.

Jim Cross, Mayor of the City of Russell, expressed his pride in the recognition, stating, "This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our team, including our linemen, production operators, mechanics, and electric utility director. We also extend our gratitude to our partners, the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency and Mid-States, for their invaluable support."

The City of Russell's commitment to infrastructure investment, led by the city council, has played a pivotal role in this recognition. City Manager Jon Quinday highlighted, "Our city council's consistent prioritization of infrastructure upgrades, such as the reconstruction of our electric distribution system and investments in additional generation capacity, has been instrumental in ensuring reliability and future-proofing our electric utility."&nbsp;
