Dear USD 428 Families and Staff,
A social media threat was reported directly to Great Bend Police Department on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 25 and investigated by GBPD.
- GBPD has investigated the threat fully and found it is not true.
- The post/threat originated from out of state, did not reference any specific information about our district or schools, and was reposted by a Great Bend student.
We are relieved to report that law enforcement officers determined this threat poses no danger to our students. It’s also an important reminder to never “share” a threat on social media. Instead, take a screenshot and report it to the police or school officials.
We believe this instance is part of the nation-wide trend of anonymous threats that have affected numerous schools across Kansas in recent weeks.

Dear GBMS Families & Staff,
Homecoming week at Great Bend Middle School has gone differently than planned. While we are glad to share that both reported threats this week were found to be not credible (meaning there were no weapons at the school and individuals did not have the means to act on the threats), we know students and families have been impacted by the concern and stress of the past few days.
Tomorrow, school will be in session as planned, and we will take extra measures to help students feel safe. Additional school counselors will be on-site to provide support, as well as an increased police presence. We prioritize creating a safe and supportive environment where students can focus on their learning and growth.
We also want to reiterate that the district and law enforcement take these types of threats and behaviors very seriously. Beyond the legal consequences that accompany such actions, the district may impose disciplinary measures, including suspension from school for up to one year. To reiterate the results of the GBPD investigations, neither the USD 428 nor the Great Bend Police Department found any weapons on school grounds this week. For students who were absent today, we have included the message below that GBMS teachers shared with all students in the building. We encourage you to share the information and talk with your child.
If you or your child has any further information regarding these incidents, please report it to a teacher, myself, the district office, or the local police department. If you are uncomfortable with these options, you can submit concerns anonymously through the School Violence Hotline, which reports directly to the Kansas Highway Patrol at 1-877-626-8203.

Dear Students,
This is a message from Mr. Ellegood. I want to address an important matter that has come to our attention. Recently, a social media threat was reported. This incident is currently under investigation, but preliminary information appears that it was intended to disrupt our school day.
It’s important to know that these images were pulled from the internet and edited by students with threatening language. This was not a real threat. Please know you are safe, and this information has been communicated to your families.
Our school takes all potential threats very seriously. Any student found to be involved in incidents like this will face serious consequences, both legally and through our school discipline procedures.
As we continue our investigation, we will have an increased police presence on campus to ensure everyone’s safety. Your well-being is our top priority, and if you are feeling scared or nervous, please let your teachers know.
