Have you ever considered yourself a caregiver? Have you looked after someone suffering a disability, illness, or injury? Have you raised children? If the answer is ‘yes,’ to any of these, you have played an invaluable role as a caregiver.

As you probably know, caregivers help with daily activities such as dressing, cooking, managing health concerns, and providing priceless emotional support.

With aging populations, an increase in chronic disease, and rising dementia rates, the need for caregivers is growing rapidly. In today’s world, many caregivers go unnoticed while balancing multiple responsibilities. For example, caregivers often fulfill various roles as employees, parents, and spouses. While responding to demands in other areas of life, taking on the title of “caregiver” can be another full-time commitment. This can lead to exhaustion and burnout. However, a person can’t effectively pour into others until they fill their own cup.

This is why caregivers must practice self-care, and for this same reason, A Different Mindset Association was formed in Hays, Kansas. This group came together as individual caregivers, seeking ways to support others facing similar challenges. Specifically, the association recognizes the need for respite care among those with dementia-related diseases and aims to provide education, network resources, and promote awareness about dementia. Currently, the group hosts caregiver support group meetings via Zoom and provides an in-person option at The Center for Health Improvement in Hays, Ks.

As a former caregiver, Co-founder, Micki Armstrong, shares her advice, “Self-care is a very important aspect of caregiving. Make sure that you’re taking care of yourself because statistics show that sometimes the caregiver falls ill or even dies before the person that they’re caring for does. So, it’s important that you have a support system that you exercise and that you give yourself a break. Find some respite care, because if you don’t, it will affect your health.”

A Different Mindset Association plans to launch respite services for caregivers soon. In the meantime, they will host an event, “A Polka Night to Remember,” that the whole family can enjoy. The group hopes to alleviate stress for caregivers and provide entertainment for all generations. It will take place on Saturday, June 8th from 6:00-10:30 pm at the VFW in Victoria, KS. All money raised will stay local to fund Dementia and Alzheimer’s Programs along with Caregiver Support in Ellis County and surrounding areas. Enjoy Polka music by Karl Meis, a dinner buffet by Brenton Hoffman Catering, a cash bar, door prizes, and a raffle for a quarter-side processed beef donated by VJS Polled Herefords and the Brian Staab family. WINKEL: Self-care for the caregiver

All fishermen have stories about the one that got away. Great Bend High School's Blake Streck and Hunter Herrman can add their names to the list. Needing a top-three finish at the Kansas High School and Junior State Championship at Cedar Bluffs on June 1 and 2, the pair placed fourth. The duo could not quite catch a final qualifying fish that would have kept their season alive.

"Day two, we had a lot of fish that were not big enough to keep so we ended up having to throw a lot back and only got four that were big enough to keep," Streck said. "If we would have had one more fish that was big enough, we would have been into nationals."

At the high school level, competitors can compete in four of seven regional tournaments to qualify for the state competition.

"It's the weight of your best five fish each day," said Streck. "You have to be in the top 10 percent of the field to qualify for state. Once you make it to state, you have to be in the top 10 percent of that to make it to the national competition."

This year's GBHS squad included six fishermen. Streck and Herrman placed as high as second at a regional competition at Perry Lake northeast of Topeka. The duo also competed twice at Wilson Lake. Thirty teams qualified for state, meaning Streck and Herrman had to place in the top three at Cedar Bluff to qualify for the national tournament at Lake Chickamauga near Chattanooga, Tenn. The pair was sitting in eighth place after day one and still finished fourth despite not being able to catch a fifth fish big enough to qualify. The pair tallied 25.28 pounds of fish and missed nationals by less than a pound.

"We did the same stuff both days of the tournament," Streck said. "We were just hoping to get lucky and get one that was big enough."

Fishing conditions are known to change. Streck competed in the national tournament in South Carolina last year, where competition the previous day put additional stress on the fish. The competition this year was no different.

"You go up a couple days early and check it out for yourself," said Streck. "We were on a small lake so there was a lot of pressure on not very many fish. A lot of people were going for them so there was definitely a change in the way they acted from the first day of practice to the days of the tournament."

Streck thanked GBHS sponsor Kevin Hoff and everyone who made another season on the lakes possible.

Live music and entertainment filled the schedule this past Saturday for
the June Jaunt festival in Great Bend. Fire breathing and dancing performers
were featured along with circus and magician performances. 

Great Bend
Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said the 13th Annual June
Jaunt was highlighted by new features, such as the parade down Main Street on
Friday night.


"The awesome piece of it was adding the new things," said Hayes. "The parade was really successful for Sara (Arnberger) and her crew. It did bring more people to the movie night too. We had about 300 people at the movie that night which was great."

With vendors set up in the morning and inflatables and games available for the
children, Hayes said you see a variety of patrons throughout the day and even
some folks that spend most of their day at Jack Kilby Square.


"What's interesting is the people that will come, leave and come back," said Hayes. "It's one of those maybe taking the kids home, nap and the come back to play. There's also two different cycles. There's the day cycle where you can shop and the kids can play on the inflatables. Then there's the evening cycle with the nightlife and the concerts."

Hayes was thankful the weather held off compared to last year and said her team
will continue finding ways to improve on June Jaunt festivals for Great Bend.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Another year complete of June Jaunt in Great Bend

At the Great Bend City Council meeting on May 20, the
governing body was missing three elected officials and voted 4-1 to pass an
ordinance to legalize golf carts on certain city streets. Councilmember Cory
Urban voted against the ordinance, which caused the ordinance to fail because
City Attorney Allen Glendenning informed the council there needs to be a
minimum of five votes to pass a new ordinance. 


With the mayor and all eight councilmembers present at Monday’s meeting, Mayor
Cody Schmidt recommended revisiting the legalization of golf carts on city
streets.


"I feel like there was a 4-1 motion," said Schmidt. "In my opinion, that has enough ground to run with. I'm going to request on the next agenda to bring that golf cart ordinance back to the table."

Glendenning said the decision to revisit the golf cart ordinance is up to the
council.&nbsp;

The ordinance allows golf carts on certain streets with a valid driver’s
license, registration, city-issued license plate, minimal equipment and
insurance. The carts would not be allowed on federal or state highways,
McKinley Street, Broadway Avenue or any street with a speed limit in excess of
30 miles per hour (except to cross).&nbsp; &nbsp;

Great Bend council to revisit usage of golf carts on city streets

Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler had to do something few, if any, clerks have done before her: hold an election in a temporary workspace during the HVAC renovation project at the courthouse. Schmeidler was named the county clerk in October 2021, after her longtime predecessor Donna Zimmerman announced her retirement. Now back inside the courthouse, Schmeidler recently filed for candidacy to retain her position so she can continue work on some ongoing projects.

"We received an Election Security Grant from the state, and we're still working on implementing the improvements that we were able to do because of that grant," she said. "I'd like to see all those through. Also, I strive to conduct fair and just elections and to make sure the people's voices are heard. We have a great team in the office and we work well together. I really enjoy coming to work every day."

Schmeidler began working for Barton County in 1994. She worked in Communications, the county attorney's office, and the Records Department before moving to the clerk's office nine years ago. She was appointed to the clerk's job by the Barton County Republican Committee when Zimmerman retired after 26 years in the office.

"I always thought that probably helped me out with those different experiences in different departments," Schmeidler said. "It helps me understand the county a little bit better and has helped me in my job as the county clerk."

The deadline to file for candidacy in the Aug. 6 primary election was Monday at noon. Alicia Straub, a former Barton County commissioner and current Kansas senator, has also filed to run for the county clerk position.

 </figure>By MIKE COURSON Great Bend PostBarton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler had to do something few, if any, clerks have done before her: hold an election in a temporary workspace during the HVAC renovation project at the courthouse. Schmeidler was named the county clerk in October 2021, after her longtime predecessor Donna Zimmerman announced her retirement. Now back inside the courthouse, Schmeidler recently filed for candidacy to retain her position so she can continue work on some ongoing projects."We received an Election Security Grant from the state, and we're still working on implementing the improvements that we were able to do because of that grant," she said. "I'd like to see all those through. Also, I strive to conduct fair and just elections and to make sure the people's voices are heard. We have a great team in the office and we work well together. I really enjoy coming to work every day."Schmeidler began working for Barton County in 1994. She worked in Communications, the county attorney's office, and the Records Department before moving to the clerk's office nine years ago. She was appointed to the clerk's job by the Barton County Republican Committee when Zimmerman retired after 26 years in the office."I always thought that probably helped me out with those different experiences in different departments," Schmeidler said. "It helps me understand the county a little bit better and has helped me in my job as the county clerk."The deadline to file for candidacy in the Aug. 6 primary election was Monday at noon. Alicia Straub, a former Barton County commissioner and current Kansas senator, has also filed to run for the county clerk position.

The adventure officially began last Friday but it's not too late to sign up for the Great Bend Public Library's Summer Reading Program. The 2024 edition will end with a Mario Adventure Party on July 19. Circulation Manager Lisa Zier said it takes just a few minutes to sign up for the program.

"Even if you missed the kickoff party, you can sign up at any time," she said. "We have events for children of all ages, so if you are from 1 to 101, you can still participate. We will have prize drawings for the adults. The teens will have an auction where they earn library loot by participating in programs all summer. The kids will have beads to track their progress. Their big prizes come with the Mario Party at the end of summer."

Alpacas from Heartland Farms helped kick off this year's program on the library lawn last Friday. Mario and his friends will also play a large role in this year's theme.

"The Summer Reading theme is 'Adventure Begins at Your Library,'" Zier said. "It's a nationwide theme. We've chosen to end the summer with a Mario Adventure Party. Mario seems to be really popular, always, and that's something that's relatable for a lot of people regardless of age."

There are various ways to earn prizes this summer. Every time patrons check something out from the library, they will be entered into the weekly check-out contest with three different age groups. Reading minutes may also be logged for prizes at the end of summer.

"It doesn't matter how many pages you read, what reading level you are, whether you're reading 'See Spot Run' or 'Anna Karenina,' you're tracking minutes," Zier said. "Listening counts, and if you're reading to your kids, that counts."

Storytime at the library is each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. The library has a full slate of Wonder-Full Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. each week. Those begin with a 45-minute show from Dan Dan the Magic Man on June 5, and also include stops from Fort Larned, the Sternberg Museum, Kansas Wetlands Education Center, and Smoky Hills PBS, where every child in attendance will receive a free copy of "Nature Cat: Can you Dig It?" The library also offers many teen and adult-oriented programs, including Trivia Night at Dry Lake Brewing on June 20 and July 18.

Prizes up for grabs in Great Bend library's Summer Reading Program

The staff at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center is always busy. The KWEC provided 105 in-house programs for school students during April and May. Director Curtis Wolf said plenty more activities are planned for the summer months, including a pair of WILD Club activities. On Friday, June 14, attendees can learn about small mammals.

"They'll be looking at doing some small mammal trapping," Wolf said. "We'll check the traps, talk about animal tracks. There's no registration needed for this. We'll take anyone that shows up. We can accommodate a lot of people for that one."

WILD Club activities take place at the KWEC from 10-11 a.m. The theme for Friday, July 12 will be insects. Attendees can trap the bugs and learn how to identify them using a field manual. KWEC is also offering several drop-in craft and educational opportunities on Fridays from 1-4 p.m. throughout June and July.

"It's a very informal-type thing," Wolf said. "When you come in the door, we'll have a little station set up with a different craft activity the kids can do. It'll probably take 30 minutes to do the activity, then you'll have time to check out the rest of the exhibits at the Center."

Make a seed kaleidoscope on June 14, and create a pollinator puddler on June 21. On July 5, attendees can use shed snakeskin to make a suncatcher, and on July 12, can use the natural dyes of plants to create a hammered flower banner.

There are still openings for both KWEC Discovery Camps. Grades 1-3 will have their camp on July 16 and 18, and just a few spots remain. Camp dates for grades 4-6 are July 23 and 25 with several spots still open. Camps will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on those dates, and there is a $20 registration fee. Parents can drop kids off as early as 7:30 a.m. and pick them up as late as 5:30 p.m. for an additional $10. Camp attendees will need to bring a sack lunch but snacks will be provided. Call the KWEC at (877) 243-9268 to register.

Admission to the KWEC is always free but the Center is again participating in the Sunflower Summer program, which gives Kansas families access to more than 220 tourism attractions across the state. New this year, KWEC will be compensated for each visitor who uses the app. Those who do use the app will also receive a take-home nature craft kit.

KWEC gearing up for busy summer; Discovery Camp spots still open

With the filing deadline past, a list of local names is available
through the Barton County website on the names you will see in this upcoming
election.


Each incumbent on the Great Bend City Council has filed for a seat on the
board, including Kevyn Soupiset in Ward 2, Davis Jimenez in Ward 3 and Tina
Mingenback in Ward 4. Lindsey Krom-Craven has the only contested race in the
council with Gary Parr also filing in Ward 1.


The Hoisington City Council has Carrol Nather running in Ward 1, Keith Kennon
in Ward 2, James Morris in Ward 3 and Dakota Meyers in Ward 4.


With three open positions on the Ellinwood City Council, Kirk Clawson, Kenneth
Lebbin and Jacque Isern will be on the ballot.


As far as county races, Bev Schmeidler and Alicia Straub are vying for the
Barton County Clerk position. Glennda French and Susan Williams are racing for
the Register of Deeds seat. 


Colin Reynolds is the only name on the ballot for Barton County Attorney. Brian
Bellendir is running for Sheriff and James Jordan for County Treasurer. Barb
Esfeld is running unopposed for the 2nd District seat on the Barton
County Commission and Shawn Hutchinson is unopposed for the 3rd

Local candidates filed for Barton County elections

Action was light at Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting. That gave the board time to reflect on Friday's ribbon cutting of the renovated courthouse. 

"You know certain things are just not going to go the way they're planned but I was so happy with the day," said Commission Chair Barb Esfeld. "I thought, overall, it was excellent. I appreciate everyone who came out. The fact that so many people supported this event, this courthouse, was very moving. I don't think we could have asked for a better day."

County staff was moved out of the building last July and returned to the courthouse beginning May 13. Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson and County Administrator Matt Patzner reiterated that, despite the big move, not a day of county operations was lost.

"Through this whole HVAC renovation process and being moved out for 11 months, three different properties we had to move to, how many days were county operations down due to this? Pat yourself on the back, Mr. Patzner. In my opinion, that's a huge accomplishment that we were not down for one day even though it was very challenging."

The courthouse is again fully operational, including the treasurer's office now on the first floor for easier access, but the project is not quite done yet.

"I hope the employees of the courthouse and public can understand that we did everything within our power to get everything done," Hutchinson said. "Our choices were to stay and continue to pay rent at those other locations, or get back here, stop paying rent, and deal with a few little tweaks that we have to make as we go. I think we made the right decision."

Throughout the process, current commissioners thanked previous commissions for their work ahead of the decision to complete the renovations. Former commissioner Jim Daily also spoke at Tuesday's meeting.

"You were out of this facility for 11 months," he said. "We talked about all these changes when I was still on the commission so it's been a process that has taken a long time to come to fruition. What I can see of it so far looks pretty nice. Well worth the wait."

Dr. Sherri Brantley, a Republican candidate for the 112th District of the Kansas House of Representatives, also spoke Tuesday morning.

"This is a preserved landmark for future generations," she told the commission. "The fact that you had the kids cut the ribbon, I have goosebumps talking about it again. I thought that was just icing on the cake. That was fabulous."

The commission again thanked county staff for their work and patience during the project. Special notice was given to county employees who gave tours after the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including Central Kansas Community Corrections Director Brooke Haulmark, Health Department Director Karen Winkelman, and Misty Trudeau, financial officer for the health department. The commission also thanked Administrative Assistant Diana Watson for organizing Friday's celebration.

Barton Commission congratulates staff for successful ribbon cutting

Construction of Bright Beginnings took less than a year to complete, and
now the childcare facility has a day of operation complete. The doors opened to
Bright Beginnings on Monday, available for children ages six weeks to five years
old. 

The 6,500-square-foot daycare, a project facilitated by Great Bend
Economic Development’s Advancing Barton County Childcare, is an accomplishment
a long-time coming according to Economic Development Director Sara Arnberger.


"This has been a long road," said Arnberger. "I'm very excited to say it was a successful day. We had lots of great feedback from parents and kiddos."

Arnberger added Bright Beginnings is full on infants and toddler spots, but the
childcare is still accepting enrollment for preschool-aged children.

"I stopped by in the afternoon when one of the kids was leaving, and he said 'Mom, this was the best day ever.' I think that's a success. I'll take it."

The daycare, which will accommodate up to 80 children, was made possible, in
part, with a $500,000 contribution from the Patterson Family Foundation and a
$2.23 million grant from the Kansas Children's Cabinet and Trust Fund Child
Care Capacity Accelerator. The Barton County Commission contributed $435,000 to
the facility.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (6/3)

This is the time to fertilize warm-season lawn grasses such as bermudagrass, buffalograss, and zoysiagrass. Bermudagrass used on athletic fields needs about 4 lbs. nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season.&nbsp; High-quality home lawns are often given 3 pounds per 1000 square feet and low maintenance areas can get by on 2 lbs.. Apply this as separate applications, about 4 weeks apart consisting of 1 lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. starting in early May for athletic fields.&nbsp; It is already too late for the May application, but the June application is just around the corner. The nitrogen can come from either a quick- or slow-release source. So any lawn fertilizer will work. Plan the last application for no later than August 15. This helps ensure the bermudagrass is not overstimulated, making it susceptible to winter-kill.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Zoysiagrass grows more slowly than bermudagrass and is prone to develop thatch.&nbsp; Consequently, it does not need as much nitrogen. In fact, too much is worse than too little. One and one-half to 2 pounds N per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season is sufficient. Split the total in two and apply once in early June and again around mid-July. Slow-release nitrogen is preferable but quick-release is acceptable. Slow-release nitrogen is sometimes listed as "slowly available" or "water insoluble."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

BOOR: Fertilizing warm season

Playground additions were in demand this spring in Great Bend. The Great
Bend Recreation Commission is set to host a grand opening of the Ninja course
and rock-climbing wall at the Activity Center Wednesday, June 5. 

With help from
the Kiwanis Club, Rec Center Executive Director Chris Umphres said they are
already celebrating the addition of a playground at the Great Bend Sports Complex.


"The partnership with Kiwanis has been huge," said Umphres. "Those playgrounds have already brought some enjoyment for a lot of kids. This last tournament we had over weekend, we saw 20 to 30 kids at a time huddled around that playground at the Sports Complex. I'm sure the parents appreciated that too."

The Kiwanis Club received $50,000 from the Robert and Patricia Schmidt
Foundation that covered the 36' x 29' playground feature at the Sports
Complex. 

The grand opening for the Ninja course on Wednesday will begin at
11:45 a.m. with giveaways and food. 


"I'm hoping it's a real good turnout, especially with the free jambalaya provided to the first 200 participants," said Umphres. "The construction crew should be wrapping up the boulders and rock climbing portion of it. We should be good to go."


Near the softball fields at Veterans Memorial Park, a 15-post Diamond Climber
playground equipment was installed again with help from Kiwanis and the Bill
McKown Foundation.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The license plate recognition cameras employed by the City of Great Bend
are proving to be successful even when they are getting damaged. 

Great Bend
Police Chief Steve Haulmark told the city council Monday that around 9:30 a.m.
this morning a motorist had a tire blowout on South U.S. 281 Highway, lost
control of the vehicle, crashed into a light pole and one of the Police Department’s
license plate cameras.


"The gentleman made the decision to leave the scene," said Haulmark. "Through the use of our other license plate readers, we were able to find that same vehicle. We had contact with him in his driveway as he was vacuuming all that glass out of his car. It went really well."

In February 2023, the Police Department secured a $132,000 federal grant to
purchase license plate recognition technology and 12 cameras. The Police
Department will receive the same grant amount this year to renew the lease on
the existing cameras and add eight more cameras.


"Those cameras are doing exactly what they're supposed to do," said Haulmark. "We're not tracking anybody that we don't need to. When we need to find a vehicle it's very helpful."

The Flock Safety technology also allows Great Bend to access cameras throughout
the state and beyond.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
