Local farmers and gardeners around the Golden Belt are ready to sell their goods. Stafford County is ready to join the mix. Stafford County Eco Devo Director Ryan Russell, appearing on KVGB's "Focus on Stafford County" program with Steve Webster, said the first farmers market in St. John is planned for Thursday, June 13.

"We just got a grant from Golden Belt Community Foundation for some tents and tables for a farmers market, so we'll be purchasing some of that," he said. "I'm trying to line up some food trucks and maybe some music for the first week."

The farmers market, managed by the St. John's Extension office, will be centered around the new gazebo that was dedicated last Friday during the Jubilee. The market will begin at 4 p.m. each Thursday in the northwest corner of the square around the gazebo.

"Come on down, get some veggies, some fruit, some jams, jellies, and whatever else we have down there," Russell said. "Enjoy yourself in the park - it's beautiful."

Stafford County Eco Devo now has a full-time administrative position open. Anyone interested in renting one of the Eco Devo properties can contact Housing Opportunities Inc at (620) 792-3299.

Stafford County planning first farmers market on June 13

ELLSWORTH COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just after 11:30p.m. Sunday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Toyota Highlander driven by William R. Thomas, 79, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, was eastbound on Interstate 70 approximately 4 miles east of the Wilson-Lucas Kansas 232 exit.&nbsp;

The Toyota rear-ended a 2012 Ford Focus driven by Elizabeth A.&nbsp;Lineberry, 18, Colorado, who slowed due to blowing dust and no visibility.&nbsp; After impact, a 2017 Ford Escape driven by Chantelle H. Meyer, 31, Salina, rear-ended the Ford Focus.

EMS transported&nbsp;Meyer to Salina Regional Health Center and a passenger in the Toyota Karine M. Thomas, 76, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to&nbsp;Ellsworth County Medical Center.

EMS transported a passenger in the Ford Focus Margaret A.&nbsp;Bojorquez, 44,&nbsp; Flippin, Arkansas, to HaysMed.

Lineberry and Thomas were not injured. All five were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The
drought monitor report as of Tuesday, May 28 shows an intensification of
drought in our area with parts of Barton, Stafford, Pawnee and Rush counties
now in extreme drought.&nbsp; Most of our area
is firmly entrenched in severe drought. The eastern third of the state
continues faring the best and mostly out of dry conditions.&nbsp; The doesn’t include any rainfall since
Tuesday. &nbsp;The six to ten-day outlook (June
4 to 8) indicates a 50 to 60% chance of likely above normal temperatures and 33
to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (June 6 to 12)
indicates a normal to slightly below normal temperatures and normal precipitation.&nbsp; As the wheat to be harvested is rapidly
maturing, partially due to the overall lack of moisture, these warm
temperatures will move things along.

Weather permitting, wheat harvest is
just around the corner.&nbsp; Corn is in the
ground and grain sorghum and soybeans in progress.&nbsp; You will hear, see, or read reports about
test weights, bushels per acre, grain moisture, and dockage for example.&nbsp; Almost everyone in the area recognizes these and
other terms but many don’t really know what they mean.&nbsp; Today, as we wait for wheat harvest and hope
for more rain for our summer crops and pasture, let’s take a moment to explain
a few common agriculture terms.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bushel
– A bushel is a bit weird.&nbsp; It’s both a
volume and a weight.&nbsp; Originally it was
four pecks or eight dry gallons.&nbsp; Think a
bushel basket.&nbsp; You can still buy pecks
and bushel baskets of say apples.&nbsp; Today
we really think of it as a weight.&nbsp; While
the rest of the world thinks SI (kilograms and metric tons per hectare) for
grains, we think bushels per acre.&nbsp; Each
grain has a standard bushel for our hard red winter and white wheat, a bushel
is 60 pounds as are soybeans.&nbsp; Oats are
32 pounds while corn and grain sorghum are 56.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Test
Weight – When grain is taken into a facility, one measure of quality is test
weight.&nbsp; Think of it as a density
(lb/unit volume).&nbsp; A grain analysis
computer is used today to compare the actual density of the grain to the
standard described above.&nbsp; Wheat’s
standard here is 60 lb/bushel.&nbsp; If the
sample is much below 60, say 57 or 56, the load of grain will be docked,
“penalized” and a price deduction is taken.&nbsp;
On the other hand, if your wheat comes in at 62 or 63 pounds, you seldom
receive a premium.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Grain
Moisture – Another indication of quality, and more importantly keeping the
grain in condition is the moisture grain.&nbsp;
Too wet and it can spoil, require drying, and leads to more pest
problems.&nbsp; Too dry and it can crack
during handling.&nbsp; And actual bushels
delivered is a function of the weight and adjusting it to a standard
moisture.&nbsp; Each grain has a
standard.&nbsp; This also allows a producer to
compare between fields and years.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally,
dockage – a grain sample is taken, weighed, run through a machine with
different hole size opening sieves.&nbsp; Each
fraction can be weighed and from this it’s determined how much to penalize,
dock, the load.&nbsp; It can be weed seed,

Great Bend's CKCA offering free summer reading program for all kids

Not all stories have a happy ending, but one circulating around Great Bend last week did. Gentry Ramsey, a teenager at Great Bend High School who suffers from cerebral palsy, had her bike stolen from a Great Bend residence sometime between Sunday afternoon and 8 a.m. the following morning. Gentry's father took the matter to the police. Shelly Duvall, Gentry's mother and a popular coach at GBHS, took the matter to social media. The post had more than 280 shares in just a few hours.

"The community just jumped and came to her rescue," Duvall said. "Everybody was looking for it. I was constantly being asked, 'Could it be here? Could it be here? Have you checked here?' I've never had so many eyes on something for my child because they knew how important it was to her."

Because of her cerebral palsy, Gentry cannot ride a regular two-wheeled bike due to balance issues. Her Vevor Trike included a basket so she could cart things around and do many of the things teenagers do.&nbsp; Throughout Monday, Duvall's phone dinged constantly with possible sightings or offers to help purchase a new trike. 

"The community, they were mad that this bike was stolen from her and were willing to do whatever they needed to," said Duvall. "It was just constant, all day. People were sending video and everything. It wasn't just Great Bend, it was Hoisington, Ellinwood, St. John."

Then one of Duvall's former athletes, Colton Brack, called with the best news: the bike had been located in Albert. Colton and his mother, Jeana, offered to return the bike to Gentry, who could barely contain her excitement to get the trike back.

"That's a piece of independence for her that was stolen," said Duvall. "Anyone who has a child with a disability knows how important those things are. It's their freedom. It's their sense of self. For Gentry to get that back, it was a huge deal. Colton, she knows him from school and he's been awesome to her. It was just this big hug and joyous celebration when he pulled in with the truck. He was honking his horn all the way down. It was a pretty cool thing to see."

The video of the Bracks returning the trike to Gentry has been viewed more than 2,000 times on Facebook. Anyone with information about the theft is encouraged to contact the Great Bend Police Department.

Golden Belt responds after Great Bend teen's trike stolen

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. KDHE announces public health advisories for several Kansas lakes

On May 20, 2024, the&nbsp;U.S. Secretary of Agriculture designated the Golden Belt area an agricultural disaster due to a drought that began on May 14.

Small nonfarm businesses in 10 Kansas counties are now eligible to apply for low‑interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, announced Francisco Sanchez, Jr.,&nbsp;associate administrator for the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience at the Small Business Administration. These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought in the following primary counties that began May 14.

The Shafer Art Gallery at Barton Community College is pleased to announce the acquisition of the "American Pastoral" art collection, made possible through a donation from renowned agrarian art collectors Mark and Carol Moseman.

This collection, created by celebrated artist Roberta Condon, highlights the beauty and historical significance of the American agricultural landscape. Mark, who coined the term "Agrarian Art," meant to express man’s relation to the land, and his wife Carol have been avid supporters and collectors of the genre. Their commitment to preserving agrarian life is evident in their significant contribution to the Gallery. Mark said that he and his wife grew up on family farms and have searched for a collection like this all their lives.

“The loss of the family farm is one of the most significant events in American history and until now was not expressed in a museum-quality art collection,” he said. “'American Pastoral' is iconic and exceptional. It needs to be preserved, and we felt we were meant to preserve it."

A lifelong artist, Condon was inspired to create the collection during a series of hikes along the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin. She said she was drawn to paint the landscape series when passing by beautiful farmland that was rapidly disappearing.

“I was unable just to paint the beauty,” she said. “So, I proceeded with a project that would educate the public as to the reasons these farms were failing while at the same time preserving the beauty I saw around me.”

The collection was chosen specifically for the communities of Barton County to experience because of the agricultural region in which it resides. The Mosemans believe it can be an invaluable resource for Barton students and the surrounding communities.

"Students who understand the past will be better prepared to go into the future,” he said. “The collection will help the College community understand the cultural and historical context of the agricultural technology that they teach, learn, and practice."

Condon aims to raise awareness about the decline of family farms in the Midwest through her artwork, preserving the beauty of rural America while educating the public about the challenges these communities face.

“The loss of this lifestyle has far-reaching consequences to the community, the schools, the land, the animals, and even the core values that we treasure,” she said. “Many of the views in this series have already disappeared. I drive past these scenes all the time and cherish the lifestyle and the images I see.”

The donation by the Mosemans underscores their views on the importance of the arts in education and highlights the significance of the agricultural region remembering where they came from.

“Agrarian life, including family farms, brought this nation along.&nbsp; We must not forget,” said Carol. “Preserving and sharing this singular collection will help us remember what brought our nation along.”

The Gallery will host an opening reception to unveil “American Pastoral: An Alphabetic Primer on the Loss of the Midwestern Family Farm” at 6:30 p.m. June 7, featuring artist comments and light refreshments. The exhibit will run through August 10.

Shafer Art Gallery acquires significant art collection, reception June 7

With the snip from an extra-large pair of scissors, made even bigger by the future generation of Barton County residents holding them, the Barton County Courthouse HVAC Renovation Project unofficially came to a close Friday afternoon with a ribbon cutting. Commission Chair Barb Esfeld let the children in a packed rotunda of the renovated courthouse do the cutting. 

Work on the project began earlier, but the Barton County Commission officially approved the renovations on Feb. 8, 2023. Year leases were secured at three area locations so the county could continue its operations uninterrupted. Esfeld thanked the many people who made the project possible.

"Our appreciation goes out to all of you who have supported our county in this effort, from our taxpayers, to our employees, to our elected officials, and our contractors, it's been a labor of love for all of us as we've worked so hard to develop our courthouse for another 100 years of service."

With some hiccups along the way, the project finished with a price tag of $5,052,684.10. The county will receive approximately $1.1 million in tax credits, bringing the final project cost under the original budget of $4.2 million. Esfeld thanked county employees who worked through the project.

"You have shown great commitment to the well-being of Barton County as you have endured two moves, catastrophic weather events, elections, a lack of restrooms, and a lack of air conditioning day in and day out," she said. "You purged over 100 years of documents and you continued to conduct business day after day for the last 11 months."

All five current commissioners thanked past commissioners for having the foresight to hold money back for potential projects like the HVAC renovation. But Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson said it was an allocation of federal dollars following the COVID-19 pandemic that allowed the current body of commissioners to move forward with the project.

"It was truly possible with an influx of federal money," he said. "This was called American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money. That was a little over $5 million that came to Barton County. Also, with the help of Great Bend Economic Development, we were able to procure tax credits. We estimate the proceeds of that to be around $1.2 million. So now we see there's about $6.2 million, and it all has a timeline. Commissioners decided to renovate the courthouse and invest the rest of the money in the local business owners on Main Street in Barton County."

Hutchinson said the elephant in the room was the actual condition of the 100-plus-year-old building. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst, Hutchinson rated the building before renovations at a nine. He acknowledged federal tax dollars are still tax dollars but said Barton County made the best use possible of those funds.

"If these tax dollars are going to go somewhere, I would rather have them go here than somewhere else," he said. "To me, that's common sense. So how do we keep it here? That was phase two of this project. With the Façade Improvement Grant Program, we invested in our downtowns, our local business owners. We required local contractors and the materials to be sourced locally. Then we chose the most local contractors possible to renovate our courthouse. This is how it should be done. When you do something, do it right. This was done right. We spent $5 million on this building, and we got a $5 million product out of it."

Three current commissioners took office just before the big vote in February. Tricia Schlessiger reflected on the momentous decision.

"That day early in my term as a commissioner, I was nervous," she said. "What was the right bold move? What was the brave move? Seeing this amazing finished product here makes certain we moved in the right direction. Thank you to all the Barton County employees, all the electeds, and all the citizens for being patient in this journey."

Duane Reif had also taken office just weeks before the decision. He, too, wondered what the right decision was at the time.

"As a newly elected official in January 2023, even though I had been attending commission meetings for several months, I knew this project was in the works," he said. "Honestly, I was a little apprehensive to know I would have to make a decision moving forward with the renovation of the courthouse and the HVAC system. Shortly after I took office and did research, I finally understood why the changes and renovations needed to be made."

Donna Zimmerman was the other new commissioner on the board. She spent 26 years in the building as the county clerk. She shared her pleasure Friday at seeing the renovated building.

"We now have climate control, improved lighting, air handling, and functioning bathrooms," she said. "Things are clean and fresh; no 100-plus years of dust. We have a beautiful, historic building with modern amenities. We mentioned how proud we are of our contractors, but what we should note is how proud our contractors are of this project."

Matt Patzner closed out the speeches with a special thanks to IT Director Dereck Hollingshead and Road and Bridge Department staff for going above and beyond during the project.

Friday's ribbon cutting and tours were attended by various representatives from state and federal offices, as well as by members of each of the communities in Barton County, project engineers, contractors, and sub-contractors, and various local civic organizations. Ellinwood's Kiley Troyer opened festivities with a singing of the National Anthem.

Barton County packs courthouse rotunda for ribbon cutting ceremony

When Danielle Fahrney worked as a parole officer, it became apparent that she wanted to take a different approach to helping people.

So, she switched gears and now has her temporary Substance-Use Disorder (SUD) license and supports clients at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway in Great Bend.

During this temporary-license stage, Fahrney works under the supervision of Kevin Ford, The Center’s Substance Use Program director.

“When I was a parole officer, I noticed that clients oftentimes viewed me as the enemy – not as someone who wanted to help,” Fahrney said. “I prayed about this and soon realized I wanted to work alongside people with SUD.”

Fahrney has been clean and sober for 17 years, and knows firsthand what alcohol and drugs can do to someone’s mental and physical health.

“I once was that person who struggled and needed encouragement,” she recalled. “Our clients need to know they are worth it and they are not alone.”

While clients help guide their treatment plans, Fahrney provides education about topics such as relapse prevention; triggers that can lead to using drugs; coping skills; and stress management.

“I want to help them navigate through the barriers they face, while providing them with opportunities to be active in their recovery process,” she said. “Together, we can find ways to do this in one-on-one and/or group settings, whatever is best for the individual.”

Fahrney noted that her new position at The Center also allows her to be active in the community and learn from other entities. “I attend educational events at Barton Community College and interact with representatives of other organizations concerned with mental health. This gives me the chance to network with these groups and learn more about our big array of local community resources.”

Fahrney will be fully licensed in the spring of 2025. Until then, Kevin Ford is her immediate supervisor.

“Because of Danielle’s knowledge and experience with SUD, she has proven to be an asset in the Care Coordination program here at The Center,” Ford said. “A few months ago, I asked her to expand her role and develop her own curriculum for group counseling. Under my supervision, she is now leading groups.

“Danielle is creative and engaging, while being receptive to suggestions,” Ford continued. “She has a great passion for what she does and is honing her skills. We are fortunate that she is expanding our SUD department where we offer counseling and peer mentoring.”

Acciona Energia hosting 'Solar and Sips' in Great Bend June 12

Continuing education is a cost associated with several professions, including county property appraisers. During Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting, Appraiser Wendy Prosser sought permission from the board for her and two other licensed staffers to attend a rare continuing education opportunity out of state.

"Our International Association of Assessing Officers, also known as IAAO, annual conference is the premier platform for us to share successes, discover best practices, and learn about the latest research in the field of property appraisal. The annual conference is going to take place at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver Aug. 25-28."

The conference will offer approximately 60 educational sessions. NFL Hall of Famer and former Denver Bronco Terrell Davis will be the keynote speaker. Prosser said continuing education is a large part of her office's budget each year, and the opportunity to attend a similar conference in future years is likely out of the question as they are scheduled for Florida, Canada, and North Carolina. This is room for the training in this year's budget.

"For 2024, it was anticipated we were going to lose a few of our longtime employees, and the new hires would need to be sent to the required classes for our office," she said. "However, fortunately for us, plans have changed for us and we are not going to lose our long-term staff."

Commission Chair Barb Esfeld, the longtime appraiser before Prosser, said conferences like this can actually save the county money.

"You get the best teachers and you're there every day and just keep going to class," Esfeld said. "You're getting your hours and not driving back and forth to Topeka."

Prosser said an employee from another county will likely join Barton County to help offset the cost of accommodations.

Barton Commission approves travel to appraiser conference in Colorado

Susan Williams has eight years of experience working in the Barton County Register of Deeds office, including seven years as the certified deputy register. Now three years out of the office, Williams has filed her candidacy for Barton County Register of Deeds ahead of the upcoming Aug. 6 primary.

"This has been my goal since 2013," she said. "I always knew that, at some point, I would run. I had promised the previous elected register that I wouldn't run until she retired. She has since retired. This is my first opportunity to run, so I'm taking advantage of that."

Williams has lived in Barton County for more than 50 years. She said when you are elected, the voters are your boss. She's ready to take on that responsibility.

"I look forward to that and I want to serve them in the best possible way," she said. "I want to make their experience in that office a pleasurable experience. I want everyone who comes through that door to feel seen, to feel valued, and I want them to leave knowing they were treated respectfully and professionally, and that their recordings were done accurately."

Williams filed by petition Wednesday morning, collecting signatures from at least three percent of Republican voters in Barton County. Current Register of Deeds Glennda French has filed for reelection. The winner of the Aug. 6 Republican primary will advance to the Nov. 5 General Election.

Former deputy register of deeds files for office in Barton County

A native of the Larned area is performing his physical-therapy clinicals at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH), while treating inpatients and outpatients throughout the facility.

Chaz Beckwith is working under the guidance of Jason Rath, who has earned his doctorate in physical therapy and been a PT at PVCH for 11 years now.

“I appreciate Pawnee Valley Community Hospital for affording me this invaluable opportunity to complete a clinical rotation at this valued institution,” Beckwith said. “I am continuously inspired by the dedication and expertise of the healthcare professionals here.”

Beckwith’s responsibilities include: completing evaluations and assessments; developing treatment plans; monitoring progress; educating patients; and collaborating with other healthcare providers.

“As a student, I am allowed to practice physical therapy with the supervision of a licensed therapist,” said Beckwith. “My goal is to earn my doctorate.

“I have consistently heard commendable reviews about this hospital and its rehabilitation facilities,” he elaborated. “Having now observed these services firsthand, I understand the reasons for such positive feedback. Our goal is to provide the best patient-centered care possible.”

Beckwith added that while he is interacting with his colleagues, “their commitment to excellence in patient care is obvious. This is a supportive and nurturing environment that has truly enriched my educational journey. I know I am being well-prepared for my career as a physical therapist.”

He has a bachelor of science degree from Kansas State University and an associate’s degree in applied science from Arkansas Tech University.

He is studying for his doctorate through Hawaii Pacific University.

Beckwith grew up in Jetmore; his parents, Kyle and Tamra, grew up in the Larned area and still live here.

During Beckwith’s clinical rotation, Rath has noted that “Chaz has a quality that makes him very well-equipped for this profession and, without a doubt, he will succeed. Chaz is knowledgeable and skillful, which leads to excellent patient care. At the same time, he is personable and respectful, which makes him great with customer service. We have enjoyed our experience with Chaz and I wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his life.”
