Compared to what they received in the 2024 City of Great Bend budget,
the Great Bend Senior Center requested the largest increase of any outside
agency in their budget proposal for 2025. The Senior Center requested just over
$309,000, which would be an increase of more than $73,000. 

Senior Center
Director Brenda Lebbin said the additional funds would help cover a rise in
maintenance costs for their transportation vehicles and better salaries for
their employees.


"None of my employees, including myself, have any benefits," said Lebbin. "We pay our people $9 an hour. I'm losing good people because we don't pay them anything. There's no retirement, no insurance, no nothing. We need to help the eight fulltime employees that work from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on salary without overtime."

The Commission on Aging also serves as the general transportation service for
the senior community. The transportation service conducted more than 20,000
rides last year. The Senior Center, at 2005 Kansas Avenue in Great Bend, served
more than 48,000 meals for seniors and the Meals on Wheels program.


"We need to keep doing what we need to do for our senior citizens because they are very important to our community," said Lebbin. "These people don't even want to go home for the weekends. This is their home. They come to the Senior Center everyday, especially the widowed ones. They stay for lunch. They stay there all afternoon."

The Golden Belt Humane Society and Great Bend Public Library were the other two

Great Bend Senior Center requests $73K more in budget

Having a new pet is supposed to be comforting, not traumatizing. The final result for Ellinwood's Allison McReynolds and Cosmo the cat is a happy ending, but not before several days of stress. McReynolds adopted Cosmo from the Golden Belt Humane Society on Saturday. Shortly after he began warming up to Allison and her sister, Brooke, things went awry after Allison went to bed.

"He kept waking me up," Allison said. "He was knocking stuff off my dresser. I got a little bit annoyed, so I made the decision to open my door and let him explore the house a little bit. By Sunday morning, around 7 or 8 a.m., he was gone."

Throughout Sunday, as Cosmo remained missing, Allison chalked it up as a scared cat hiding in his new home. By Monday, now uncertain if Cosmo was still inside the house, she went to social media. The post soon had nearly 70 shares.

"I didn't expect it to get nearly as many shares as it did," Allison said. "It was astonishing to see how many people actually cared about my little cat I had just adopted."

The search was just beginning. Later that evening, Allison and Brooke were in the bathroom when they heard meowing. They climbed into a crawlspace and shook a bag of food. Cosmo responded with meows but remained hidden. Then he went silent.

"I was a little bit convinced that he was dead by Tuesday because he had not made any noise for about nine hours," said Allison. "It was freaking me out."

At one point, Allison's mother, Diane, contacted the Ellinwood city office. A city worker who volunteers for the Ellinwood Fire Department brought over a thermal imaging camera. Still, Cosmo could not be found. Diane contacted a friend at Ellinwood District Hospital, and a maintenance worker brought over a scoping camera to check all the small spaces. Still, no Cosmo.

On Wednesday, Diane called Mason Doll, who stopped by the house to cut two holes in the floor to expand search capabilities. Cosmo was still nowhere to be found. Later that evening, Doll and Brooke were able to spot him in the attic.

"Brooke eventually went up there and grabbed him," Allison said. "He scratched the life out of her but she's okay and he's okay."

Allison still has no idea how the cat got into the attic. While the experience was traumatic for all involved, the McReynolds have also been inspired by the many acts of kindness from those in the Ellinwood community and beyond.

"It was insane to see that so many people were reaching out," Allison said. "It was just friends at first, but then it just got out to everybody. People from other towns were sharing it just in case. The Humane Society shared it and they had multiple shares on their post. We had multiple people come over, and people were contacting us and asking and saying they were following along. There was one lady who said she was watching my mom's Facebook page like it was a Netflix show, trying to see if there was an update."

Cosmo spent Thursday at the veterinarian's office nursing an injured leg and recuperating.

"He got some fluids," Allison said. "He ate overnight and ate (Thursday) morning. He was just really overheated and dehydrated. He's a very anxious cat, but I think he's okay. We're going to get him on some antibiotics to just make sure nothing's wrong."

The Kansas State Department of Education recently reported that 49 percent of Kansas public school students were approved for free and reduced-price lunches during the last school year. That need continues even when classes are not in session. USD 428 Public Information Director Andrea Bauer said the Free Summer Meal Program is going strong at five Great Bend elementary schools.

"We see the need right now," she said. "Everyone is feeling the pressure at the grocery store. This opportunity to provide free meals is really important to our community. We're serving 850 kids, on average, a day. That's 1,900 meals each day. We know that's helping out families regardless of their income. Everyone is welcome, anyone 18 and under. We'd love to have them eat with us for lunch."

Each weekday through June 28, the program is offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Park, Lincoln, Jefferson, Riley, and Eisenhower elementary schools in Great Bend. From July 1-19, the program will continue at Eisenhower, Jefferson, and Riley schools. Anyone 18 or younger can stop by and get lunch for that day and breakfast for the following morning. Meals are prepared to grab and go but students may choose to eat at the school.

There are no income or residence requirements, however a permit is required to participate. Families can stop by any of the schools between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to get the permit. Any child who will be using a permit must be present at the time.

USD 428's Free Summer Lunch Program going strong after one week

What do Fuller Industries’ Fuller Custom Brush and the upcoming wheat harvest have in common?

“More than you might think,” said Joe Mann, Fuller vice president and general manager. "For Fuller Custom Brush, some of the most interesting clients that bring us their projects work in the agriculture sector.”

Brushes can serve many functions beyond just sweeping up and scrubbing down, he said. “Brushes also take on numerous tasks in the agricultural world that many would never consider and do them far better than any other solution devised, reducing waste, improving efficiency of operations, and, we know about this very well, tackling jobs where no other solution could work.”

How? “They’re so customizable,” he said.

An ag client can request a certain type and diameter of fill, or bristle, and, in so doing, adjust the stiffness with which the brush contacts the work, whether it be a kind of grain, or a soft fruit, or a potato. Moreover, one can further tweak the length of the bristle, the density of the fill, or the trim shape of the brush.

Other aspects include whether a staple set brush or a metal channel strip brush - using Fuller’s patented Fullergript construction - or a cylinder brush using a modification of the same design.

“Our customers who work in the agriculture sector understand their needs, and, when they explain them to us, we work with them to develop the brush they need,” Mann said. “The end result is a brush designed for the job at hand, specifically, which performs the task.”

Harvesting: Brushes can play a large roll, with cylinder brushes removing the produce, in some cases leaving the plant itself intact.

Processing: Brush bristles can improve efficiency of some processes while helping to reduce waste and improve the quality of resulting produce - think of removing husks, shells, or skin from seeds, beans, or vegetables.

Material handling: Brushes can be built to specifications for virtually any handling application, from moving harvested produce from elevator to truck or guiding it along conveyors. Less bruising on fruits and vegetables can also mean premium prices at market.

Seed metering and simulation: Seed is a substantial expense to farmers and needs to be distributed to the density level needed. Small seed has a greater tendency to overplant than large seed, and flat seed has a similar tendency to overplant than round seed, and seed coatings and anti-fungal treatments are still other factors. Fuller Custom Brush can work with farmers to design and manufacture a brush to modify a machine to the meter rate needed.

Auger flighting: Using a corkscrew-shaped brush contained within a tubular shaft can move material while keeping the shaft clear. Fuller’s designers can work with the specific challenges to make the brush function to the farmer’s spec.

Sealing: Brushes can seal doors and hatches to prevent dust or debris from entering sensitive areas, or keep it in, where it belongs.

Air intake screens: Machines that need air work harder when the flow is obstructed, and the impact on parts, reduced lubricant life, and overall functional efficiency. A brush designed for the task makes short work of the project.

Vibration and debris control: A brush designed for the job can damp or dissipate vibration or shield debris yet cannot impede the key motion of the machinery. Both functions could improve performance of farm equipment while also reducing wear.

Chain oilers: Drip oilers lubricate chains at one point, using a brush oiler bathes the entire critical chain in a protective coating of oil.

Recent warming temperatures and wet weather patterns have created ideal conditions for mosquitoes, said Kansas State University entomologist Raymond Cloyd.

“There are a lot of situations (near the home) where standing water is around,” he said. “We need to be aware of mosquitoes.”

Cloyd suggests clearing out the breeding environments used by mosquitoes to help mitigate their numbers near homes.

“The way we approach mosquito management is source reduction, that is, remove all stagnant water from bird baths, old tires, wheelbarrows, or anything that holds water for an extended period of time,” he said.

Other ways to get rid of mosquito breeding grounds, according to the K-State Research and Extension publication, Pests That Affect Human Health: Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus:

· Eliminate artificial water-holding containers. If that is not possible, empty buckets, cans, bottles, used tires and other containers at least once a week. 

· Fill or drain tree holes, stumps and puddles. 

· Irrigate gardens and lawns carefully to prevent water standing for more than a few days. 

· Check for water trapped in plastic covers on boats and swimming pools. 

· Make sure rain gutters are clean and do not hold water. 

People can also use a wide variety of repellents to lessen the presence of female mosquitoes during the times they’re most active, according to Cloyd. 

“If you're going to be out at dusk and dawn, spray your body with a repellent such as DEET, Picaridin or IR3535,” he said. 

Permethrin acts as another form of female mosquito control that affects them directly, but it must be applied properly to ensure human safety.

“Permethrin is an insecticide, but you don't spray it on your skin,” Cloyd said. “You spray it just on your clothing. When you come back inside take a shower (after application).”

Mosquito management can also occur during the early phases of the insect’s life cycle using a larvicide in the form of mosquito dunks or bits.

“You can put mosquito dunks and bits in water to kill mosquitos in the larval stage,” Cloyd said. They're completely harmless to pets and fish; all they kill is mosquito larva. So if you have a pond that's not agitated or a bird bath you don't want to change, you can throw in these mosquito dunks or bits. They'll eat it then they’ll die.”

He added: “Dunks and bits are stomach poisons that contain the active ingredient, Bacillus thuringienesis (subspecies kurstaki, or Btk). Btk is a soil-borne bacterium that only kills mosquito larvae. It will manage mosquito larval populations for one to four weeks after application.”

BOOR: Mosquito management through source reduction

In the first phase of the Amber Meadows Housing Development in Great
Bend, there are three more buildable lots that sit vacant. The lots were locked
up in a land purchase agreement. City of Great Bend officials recently met with the
individuals in ownership of the lots, and the owners decided to deed the properties
back to the city. 

City Administrator Brandon Anderson said he would like to see
if anyone in the public is interested in building on the open lots.


"We would review those proposals and enter into a negotiation if we see a proposal that we like for a land purchase agreement for these three lots," said Anderson. "We want to open that opportunity up to the public and see what kind of interest is out there."

The Great Bend City Council approved publicizing the request for proposals and
will eventually appoint councilmembers to serve on an evaluation and
negotiation committee for the proposals received.


The Amber Meadows subdivision referenced requires houses built be a minimum of
1,200 square feet and a maximum of 1,800 square feet. All of the single-family
homes have to be sold at a minimum of $150,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend looking for housing developers in Amber Meadows

In her new role as a therapist at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, Kiani Simms is eager to collaborate with clients facing a broad range of mental-health issues.

Simms, who currently has her temporary license, is working under the direct supervision of Tracie Haselhorst, clinical director at The Center. In October, Simms will be fully licensed as a professional counselor.

“I am here to help young people and adults with concerns such as depression, anxiety and adjustment issues,” Simms said. “This includes foster children and other youngsters struggling with their own families.”

In addition, Simms is comfortable working with clients who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

“I started learning American Sign Language during college,” she noted. “As part of my master’s program, I had a concentration in rehabilitation counseling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing to better understand the challenges people face and how to provide support.

“This brought a new perspective to me and a desire to support those with hearing loss.”

Simms also works with non-verbal clients.

“My intent is to help people overcome barriers they might be facing,” she commented. “I want to work alongside clients and help them reach their goals – whether that means helping them learn coping skills or figuring out who they are and what they want out of life.

“The type of treatment depends on the client,” she added. “We will collaborate with one another to discover what the individual wants and needs.”

While Simms has been at The Center only a short time, she is impressed with its services and personnel.

“I really like the size and scope of The Center,” she explained. “It is not too big but the long list of services is impressive.

“Staff members here are welcoming and have made me feel comfortable asking questions; we already are working closely together. This is a tight-knit group that helps me, but more important, benefits my clients.”

Originally from Hutchinson, Simms is a new Great Bend resident. She sees clients in The Center’s Great Bend office, 5815 Broadway, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and the Lyons office, 217 E. Ave. North, on Mondays and Thursdays.

Simms earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2021 and master’s in clinical counseling in 2023, both at Emporia State University.

Internships were job-placement specialist at Job Force Employment Solutions and therapist at Horizons Mental Health Center, both in Hutchinson.

Previous employment includes vocational-rehabilitation counselor at the Department for Children and Families, Hutchinson, and Community Based Services case manager at CrossWinds Counseling &amp; Wellness in Emporia.

She also was an SOS Helpline advocate in Emporia.

Simms counsels all ages at The Center for Counseling & Consultation

The Kansas State High School Activities Association has selected sites for the 2025 KSHSAA state basketball championships. All seven sites have hosted at least once previously. For the first time since 2020, Barton Community College in Great Bend will not host a tournament.

"We here at Barton are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to host a KSHSAA State Basketball Tournament the past several years," said Barton Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs. "Barton put its best foot forward in providing a first-class experience for all qualifying teams and schools during that time."

After hosting the 1A Division I state championships last season, the Colby Event Center has been selected to host the 1A Division II state championships in 2025. The 2A tournaments will return to their traditional home at Bramlage Coliseum after a year’s hiatus.&nbsp;

The KSHSAA continues to have a strong relationship with Barton Community College who has hosted the 1A Division II Tournaments the last four years. Colby will be the fourth community to host the 1A Division II state championships since the class split into divisions in 2011. In 2019, Class 1A held a single tournament without divisions.

“The student-athletes, coaches, school communities and officials who participated in the 1A Division I tournament in Colby last year had a great experience,” KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick said. “Colby was given a chance last year and hosted great championship tournaments. We know they will do the same in 2025. With two new hotels coming online before the 2025 tournaments, the experience for teams, families, fans and officials will be even better.”

Barton Community College couldn’t commit to hosting for a fifth year due to potential events on their campus the week of the state basketball tournaments.

“Trevor Rolfs and his team of Heather Panning, Todd Moore, Brooke Thompson, Brandon Smith, Kelsey Feist, Megan Besecker and more did a tremendous job hosting for us the past three years and we thank them for the outstanding job they did,” KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director Kyle Doperalski said. “We appreciate their team and also understand the need for them to pass on a hosting opportunity in 2025.”

Rolfs added a couple of things in the works caused Barton to hit pause on hosting state basketball.

"Increasing concerns about capacity, particularly with the impending renovation to the south upper level of our facility, combined with the potential for Barton to host Region VI playoff basketball in March 2025 led to this joint decision with KSHSAA."

Barton has to pass on hosting state basketball in 2025

Alicia Straub is now in her sixth year in Topeka, first serving in the House of Representatives, and now entering a fourth year as a state senator for District 33 which includes all or part of 12 counties, including Barton, Pawnee, and Stafford. Before Topeka, she served four years on the Barton County Commission. She's now turning her attention back to county politics as a Republican candidate in the Barton County Clerk's race.

"I think my political experience, and the fact that I'm studious, meticulous, and I'm dedicated to serving the people of Barton County and Kansas," she said. "Now understanding government the way I do, I believe this is one of the most underrated positions. It is extremely important that we get ahold of our elections to secure them."

A Barton County native, Straub went on to earn a marketing degree from Kansas State University with a minor in business. She's well familiar with the many roles performed by county clerks, including managing election equipment and voter rolls.

"Voter registration and voter rolls are the key to making sure we have secure, accurate elections to start with," she said. "We have no process of auditing voter rolls other than cross-checking them with death records, driver's license registration, but there really is no process for auditing voter rolls. That's concerning. I believe we're starting with an inaccurate list from the get-go."

 </figure>By MIKE COURSON Great Bend PostAlicia Straub is now in her sixth year in Topeka, first serving in the House of Representatives, and now entering a fourth year as a state senator for District 33 which includes all or part of 12 counties, including Barton, Pawnee, and Stafford. Before Topeka, she served four years on the Barton County Commission. She's now turning her attention back to county politics as a Republican candidate in the Barton County Clerk's race."I think my political experience, and the fact that I'm studious, meticulous, and I'm dedicated to serving the people of Barton County and Kansas," she said. "Now understanding government the way I do, I believe this is one of the most underrated positions. It is extremely important that we get ahold of our elections to secure them."A Barton County native, Straub went on to earn a marketing degree from Kansas State University with a minor in business. She's well familiar with the many roles performed by county clerks, including managing election equipment and voter rolls."Voter registration and voter rolls are the key to making sure we have secure, accurate elections to start with," she said. "We have no process of auditing voter rolls other than cross-checking them with death records, driver's license registration, but there really is no process for auditing voter rolls. That's concerning.
