Years ago, when we lived in the country, we and local critters survived an extended 100 degree+ heat wave one droughty July. Because the creek had gone dry, we filled a kiddie pool a couple times a day so wildlife could slake their thirst. Does brought fawns, coyotes and bobcats crept in under cover of darkness while birds, rabbits, and squirrels turned the round tub into a three-ring circus. After filling their tanks, visiting rodents sought cool places to collapse and wait til dusk dropped temperatures. Recent thermometer readings triggered memories as current bunnies and squirrels compete for water at our birdbaths and then zero in to find the coolest crash pads in the yard.

Anyone who’s lived through more than one summer in Western Kansas hopes to complete outdoor chores and watering in the early morning cool. We soak garden, flower beds, and pots to discourage roasting under hot prairie skies. We fill bird baths early, again at noon, at four o’clock, and at dusk. This practice suits our feathered friends, bunnies, and squirrels. During intense heat, especially when it’s windy, they drain six water containers in short time.

The four o’clock filling is our favorite. We make a point, despite pouring sweat, to rock on our shady deck and watch critters savor fresh, cool water. It’s pure entertainment from our seats. Lately, our mother rabbit introduced her 2 juveniles. Energetically, they whip in for a drink, nibble grass or clover, snarf corn and sunflower seeds and then seek the coolest spot to beat the heat.

Their behavior reminded me of those country squirrels who’d gobble a late lunch, slurp a refill, and scamper onto a shaded patio where they flattened themselves on low growing cedar branches or cool bricks. This current yard has no low branches or cool bricks, so present rodents improvise.

One afternoon, those teenager bunnies spent ten minutes juking and jigging about the yard like practicing football players before they settled into their high tea and eventually a flowerbed snooze. I don’t know how rabbits communicate, but somehow mom let her young know they can safely eat and nap close to the deck where green grasses grow, soil is damp and cool, and humans laugh at their antics.

Once they finish snacking, they scout beneath the big ash tree for the best camp site. Because I water in the morning, evaporation has performed its cooling magic. The cottontails each claim a spot, gently pawing out a soft-landing. Once they settle, they remain alert til nature takes its course. Full tummies and soft earth work like a sleeping tonic, forcing bunny eyes to close and heads to nod. Like resistant toddlers, they jerk to attention a time or two but sleep eventually wins.

Who knew sitting outside watching wildlife at 95 degrees in the shade could engage a body so thoroughly. Keep in mind, while bunnies nap, crazy birds zoom in and out of bird baths like they’re at Dulles Airport. Somehow watching them while fluffy butts snooze keeps a gal awake on a scorching afternoon.

MADORIN: Looking for a cool spot

Marketing Maven Consulting, a brand management and design firm based in Great Bend, announced the addition of a new employee. Logan Welcher, a Great Bend native, started with the company at the end of July as a communications and marketing assistant. 

“Logan’s enthusiasm for continuing education and career development aligns perfectly with our culture at Marketing Maven,” said Rachel Mawhirter, Marketing Maven's Founder &amp; CEO. “She’s got a lot of great experience, and has hit the ground running. We’re excited to have her on our team!”

Welcher earned her Associate’s Degree from Barton Community College in May 2021 and recently graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Kansas State University in May of 2024. During her college career, Logan gained experience as a digital marketing intern for SEG Media Collective and as a sales expert at T-Mobile, both located in Manhattan.

Logan’s interest in marketing ignited during a high school marketing course while campaigning for a local election as part of a class project. 

“I love the idea of not doing the same thing every day, and being able to explore my creativity,” Welcher shared. “I have a passion for reaching goals, learning new things, and making people happy, so I think Marketing Maven will be the perfect home for me.”

When she’s not at work, Welcher loves traveling and attending live music events. On those cozy days at home, she might be found binge-watching TV shows, dancing to her favorite songs, or spending time with her cat.

Eagle Radio's news week in review

An investment in children is an investment in the future. That was the sentiment at Thursday's ribbon cutting at the new Little Panthers Preschool and USD 428 District Education Center in Great Bend. Attendees were able to tour the new facility, enroll their three or four-year-olds, enjoy light refreshments, or even apply for jobs within the district. Superintendent Khris Thexton thanked everyone who contributed to the project.

"It is an honor to stand in front of you today as we celebrate an exciting time for our district and community," he said. "The completion of the Little Panthers Preschool marks a significant moment in our commitment to improving education outcomes for the students of Great Bend. The path to realizing this vision was provided through the collaborative efforts of USD 428 board members, district leaders, educators, and committed and generous community members."

Last December, Tandi Mai was named principal of the new Little Panthers Preschool. She reported at Thursday's ceremony that all 118 morning sessions had already been filled, and 71 children were already enrolled for afternoon sessions. Enrollment for 25 all-day students who are children of district staff is also full.

"You are standing in a dream for this community, for our families, for our district, for everyone," Mai said. "I truly am honored to be a part of it. We are setting the stage for teachers to come together to truly shine, to serve our kids so they will feed into our elementary schools with the skills they need, not only academically but socially."

There is a $40 enrollment fee to attend Little Panthers Preschool but no tuition costs beyond that. The district will be reimbursed with state and federal funds. Breakfast options are available for morning students, and lunch is available for afternoon students, with prices the same as at the district's elementary schools.

McCownGordon handled the construction of the project and sponsored a classroom at the new facility. Project Manager Todd Dumler said it has been an honor to be a part of the building.

"This project, it's special to us because our mission, as a company, is we exist to improve lives," he said. "What better way to do that than to invest in a project that supports the young children of Great Bend and Barton County."

Thexton noted the dream began when USD 428 purchased the property at 1809 24th Street just off the 281 Bypass from Cuna Mutual at a discounted price of $1.3 million in September 2022. 

"I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to this project," he said. "Your dedication, hard work, and vision made this opportunity possible. I look forward to continued collaboration and providing opportunities to better serve our students, families, staff, and community."

Unpredictable weather, equipment breakdowns and technology issues are part of the deal for the custom harvesting crews that traverse the Great Plains each summer chasing the next field ready to cut. Recently released by Fort Hays State University’s Tiger Media Network, the student documentary “Life on the Harvest Run” captures the story of two Kansas-based custom crews, the frustrations they face and whether or not the next generation is willing to take on those challenges.&nbsp;

“The harvest life is so spontaneous and so not planned from day to day,” custom harvest crew member Rebecca Froese said during the film. “There's a lot of adverse and strange conditions that throw themselves at us in harvest - rain, equipment breakdowns, you name it.”&nbsp;

Custom harvesters travel the country each summer to harvest crops for farmers or businesses that may not own the necessary large-scale or specialized equipment needed for harvesting or for producers facing time constraints during the busy fieldwork season. The work of these crews helps ensure crops are harvested efficiently and effectively.&nbsp;

“With harvesting, you’ve got to be crazy to be doing it,” said Brad Befort, a custom harvester, during the film. “It's almost like you're just a little boy that's grown up and you're playing with bigger toys in the sandbox than you did when you were little.”

The film focuses on two family operations - Brad Befort Harvesting in Hays and Froese Brothers Inc. in Inman. To produce the documentary, three FHSU students - Ryan Schuckman, Raegan Neufeld and John Billinger - interviewed active and retired custom harvesters from 20 to 91 years old to get a mix of present and past perspectives on the unique job.&nbsp;

Experiences like this fit perfectly into the Department of Informatics approach to preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s workforce.”

More than just a student project, “Life on the Harvest Run” captures the spirit and camaraderie of a family tradition filled with challenges and triumphs. This behind-the-scenes view of custom harvest crews also shares an important perspective on what it takes to get wheat from a farmer’s field to a consumer’s plate.&nbsp;

“Not only are we learning how to work as a team, but we’re also learning about events and history we wouldn't have known otherwise,” Billinger said in the release. “It helps preserve their stories and experiences for generations to come.”

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. The vast majority of Barton Community College's 60 national championships have come in track and field or cross country. It should come as no surprise, then, that former Cougar athletes have been a mainstay in past Olympic Games. In 2004, 13 former Cougars competed in Athens, bringing home more medals than 44 nations, including five golds. Cougar Track and Field Coach David Schenek calls the tradition a great recruiting tool.

"When you're recruiting really high-level athletes, you can use that and say we've had these Olympians come through here whether it be the jumps, the throws, the sprints, it doesn't matter," he said.

On the other hand, Schenek also said the school's success can be intimidating for young athletes. It's a balancing act for recruiters to determine when or when not to mention the 40-plus Olympians who have competed at Barton.

"There are kids who come in here and still are a little developmental and they're still trying to figure out what their full potential is," said Schenek. "We like having kids like that out here as well. We love to develop kids and see them move on and do some great things, whether they're Olympians or not." 

Three former Cougars will compete soon in the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. On Aug. 3, Jhonny Renteria will run in round one of the 100m dash for Columbia. Renteria set a Columbian national record of 9.97s in the event in June. That time would only tie him for third in Barton history, just ahead of American record-holder Tyson Gay, who posted a 10.01 while a Cougar in 2003. Gay's 2009 time of 9.69 remains the American record. Renteria saw limited time at Barton because of COVID but did place fifth in the indoor 60m dash to help the Cougars to a national runner-up finish in the 2019-20 season.

Joveinny Mota will represent Venezuela in round one of the 100m hurdles on Aug. 7. Mota was a four-time NJCAA All-American at Barton in 2019 and 2020. She set an indoor school record in the 60m hurdles, and her outdoor 100m hurdle time of 13.25s ranks No. 2 in BCC history. She is the only Lady Cougar since 1999 to run under 13.3s. 

Mota went on to run for the University of Arkansas before transferring to the University of Kansas last year. In July, running at the NCAA West Prelims, Mota reset her Venezuelan national record in the 100m hurdles at 12.66s. Mota also represented Venezuela at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Ore. where she finished sixth in her round-one heat in 13.12.

In the field, Ana Da Silva will throw the shot put for Brazil on Aug. 8. She holds the BCC outdoor hammer record at 58.61m, and is third in school history in the outdoor shot (16.08m), both set in 2021. She was a two-time national shot put champion at Barton. After Barton, Da Silva earned indoor First-Team All-American honors at the University of Georgia in 2022, and won the SEC outdoor shot put title that same year. She sat out the 2024 season but will throw for the Bulldogs again in the 2024-25 season.

Fred Moudani was another Olympic hopeful. He set the BCC outdoor record in the shot put in 2021 and was national runner-up before moving on to the University of Cincinnati. He won the French national title in 2023 and placed 15th at the World Championships in Budapest last August but has been sidelined in 2024 with an injury.

"He was at the World Championships last year but he hurt his wrist so he was unable to compete this year," Schenek said. "He's from France so, for him, it's kind of bitter to see everything back home going on and he's unable to compete."

Three former Cougars carrying on Olympic tradition at Barton

The Aug. 6 primary election is now just days away but many voters in Kansas, including those in Barton County, have had the opportunity to early vote since July 17. Early voting closes at noon on Aug. 5, and Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler reminds voters of an additional voting period this weekend. 

"Saturday, Aug. 3, we will be open in the county clerk's office at the courthouse, second floor, suite 202, for early voting from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.," she said. "That's just Saturday only. All we need you to do is bring your photo I.D. and we can let you early vote."

Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The county clerk's office will post the results on its website as soon as possible.

"We can't start looking at any tabulation until after polls close after 7 p.m.," Schmeidler said. "We typically try to do the advanced and early voting - the mail ballots and the early voting in office - and put that up first because we can do that while we're waiting on the poll places to bring in. We post that on our website as soon as we can."

PAWNEE COUNTY– Rhonda Hudson-McNutt, 46 of Garfield, appeared in custody Thursday morning in the Pawnee County District Court before Magistrate Judge Kenton Gleason for Felony First Appearance, according to Pawnee Co. Attorney Dough McNett.

On July 29, Hudson-McNutt was arrested on probable cause following an ongoing investigation by the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department. 

She is charged with Blackmail, Breach of Privacy, to wit: disseminating nude images, Identity Theft, (Interference with Law Enforcement, to wit: falsely reporting a felony crime,&nbsp; Interference with Law Enforcement, to wit: falsely reporting information in a felony investigation, and&nbsp; Criminal False Communication. She is also charged in a separate criminal complaint with misdemeanor Trespass.

Hudson-McNutt is being held in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff in lieu of $15,000 cash or surety bond. A Preliminary Hearing has been scheduled for August 14, 2024.

Anyone is welcome to sign up for this year’s Anything That Floats Race
at Great Bend’s Party in the Park. New this year, the City of Great Bend will
award the winning entry a $250 prize.


With games, activities and entertainment lined up all day at Party in the Park
on Aug. 10, the Anything That Floats Race will take place at
11:15 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.

Christina Hayes said entries cannot include a boat hull or motor.

"You can easily put something together," said Hayes. "It does have to be a little more jumbled, meaning it can't just be an inflatable mattress or float you go out on. You have to mesh it together in some manner."

Staff from the Great Bend Police Department won the race last year, but Hayes
said the competition is open for any citizens to enter.

The property maintenance department with the City of Great Bend handles
several ordinance violations in April and May for overgrown vegetation. Cooler
temperatures and more precipitation lead to more mowing requirements. Entering
into the month of August, with scorching hot temperatures in the forecast, Hoyt
Kinsinger with property maintenance starts to see less violations. 


"Let's say they don't mow their yard, no correspondence, nothing," said Kinsinger. "We would send an abatement letter which would be another 10 days. Nothing happens. Then we post abatement letter on the front door or conspicuous place. That's another 10 days. It's kind of lengthy."

Vegetation that is nine inches or higher is an ordinance violation in Great
Bend. Kinsinger said that ordinance applies to the sidewalks, which are the
property owner’s responsibility. 


"Although it is a public sidewalk, it is the responsibility of the property owner because it is on the property," said Kinsinger. "There are two ways to handle that. You could take a trimmer and trim it all off or you could take some Roundup chemical and spray it down."

Kinsinger said he tries to work with property owners in cases where their lawn
mower breaks down or special circumstances. Great Bend has a seasonal employee
handling the abatement mowing where the costs falls back to the owner or
property taxes.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend property maintenance keeping up with overgrown grass

From the Great Bend Police Department… On July 26, the Great Bend Police Department was made aware that during the early morning hours numerous items had been stolen from residential garages and vehicles in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; During the ensuing investigation, three juvenile suspects were identified. Detectives with the Great Bend Police Department served two search warrants within Great Bend, Kansas in reference to the location of stolen property.&nbsp; As a result, numerous property items were seized as evidence and secured at the Great Bend Police Department.&nbsp; Detectives confirmed the theft of the items occurred at different locations including unoccupied vehicles and attached garage areas, and the three suspects were subsequently arrested. Several items the detectives collected have been processed and released to their appropriate owners.&nbsp; The Police Department believes that other vehicles were targeted and that the vehicle owners may not be aware that they had items stolen from them. Several items known to have been stolen are still in our custody as we attempt to identify the owners. Photos of several of those items are shown below.

Great Bend police recover several stolen items

Commonly known as “The Big First,” Kansas’s 1st congressional
district includes a pair of challengers to two-time incumbent Tracey Mann.
Democrat Paul Buskirk and Republican Eric Bloom are the two challengers and
both showed up to the candidate forum last week in Great Bend hosted by the
League of Women Voters. 

Buskirk, from Lawrence, felt strongly about the
strengthening Medicare.


"Medicare is not stable past 2036," said Buskirk. "Our stewards of social security and Medicare tell us that the money will run out for social security, to make full payments, in 2035. I believe our current folks in Washington apparently don't think that's a priority or they think it's so far away that we don't have to worry about it."

Bloom, also from Lawrence, recognized his campaign funding is different from
former Lieutenant Governor Tracey Mann.


"I can tell you the only bank account I have for this is my wife and my back account," said Bloom. "I haven't taken a single dollar and I don't plan on it. It probably means in our government, you have zero chance. I was still able to put my money down, drive across the state a couple different times and it's because I believe in democracy. You never what might just happen. I might be able to overcome a hill of money."

“Are you better off than you were four years ago?”

It is no secret that President Biden is unpopular.&nbsp; In the 2023&nbsp;Kansas Speaks&nbsp;poll, a whopping 62.8% of respondents were dissatisfied with Biden’s performance, versus 32.9% who were dissatisfied with fellow Democrat, Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp; Widespread approval of Biden’s withdrawal is one of the few issues these days that bring Democrats, Republicans and independents together.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The focus on Biden’s withdrawal centered on his age and his poor performance in the first Presidential debate–both legitimate concerns.&nbsp; Yet another issue lurks.&nbsp; By many measures, Biden’s presidency has been highly successful, characterized by a recovery from the COVID pandemic, a strong economy, falling violent crime rates, decreased poverty, and policies that have advanced the transition to domestically-produced clean energy and begun rebuilding the country’s decrepit infrastructure.&nbsp; One Biden policy even accomplished something no other President ever has–<a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/09/12/biden-child-tax-credit-poverty-doubled/">cutting the child poverty rate in half</a>, to an all-time low.&nbsp; Congress did not renew the program.

Despite this, many voters&nbsp;perceive&nbsp;the country as doing poorly.&nbsp; In the first debate, former President Trump suggested that the country is worse off today than in the last year of his Administration.&nbsp; The year 2020 was so infamous that one TV commercial portrayed it as being in love with the Devil himself.&nbsp; It was the beginning and second-deadliest year of the COVID pandemic, which ultimately killed over a million Americans and tanked the economy.&nbsp; The murder of George Floyd triggered protests over police brutality throughout the nation– most were peaceful, but some turned deadly.&nbsp; Finally, Trump’s term culminated with the events of January 6, 2021.&nbsp; Yet Trump has no trouble claiming that the country is worse off today–and many Americans seem to agree.&nbsp; Why?

Except for his own approval ratings, most numbers look very strong for Biden’s legacy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/fbi-data-shows-that-violent-crimes-in-the-u-s-decreased-in-2023">Violent crime is decreasing</a>, and remains&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2022/10/31/violent-crime-is-a-key-midterm-voting-issue-but-what-does-the-data-say/#:~:text=In%202021%2C%20the%20most%20recent,the%20National%20Crime%20Victimization%20Survey.">far below the levels of the mid-1960s to mid-1990s</a>. Unemployment dropped dramatically after the pandemic, and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/charts/employment-situation/civilian-unemployment-rate.htm">remains at low levels</a>.&nbsp; The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.officialdata.org/us/stocks/s-p-500/2020#:~:text=Stock%20market%20returns%20since%202020&amp;text=This%20is%20a%20return%20on,%2C%20or%209.34%25%20per%20year.">stock market&nbsp;</a>is doing well. After a spike in 2021-22 ,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-inflation-rates/">inflation has been stabilized</a>.&nbsp; This requires high interest rates, but the Federal Reserve predicts&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/fed-near-interest-rate-cut-d303dbd5">these can start coming down&nbsp;</a>by the end of the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Even issues important to&nbsp;Republicans&nbsp;look good for Biden.&nbsp; For example, recently, unauthorized crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border have&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/07/16/texas-border-migrant-apprehensions-decrease/">declined steeply</a>, and there haven’t been any violent antifa or Black Lives Matter protests in years.

Despite all the good news,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/08/politics/biden-polling-independents/index.html">independent voters</a>&nbsp;perceive the country to be in trouble under Biden. &nbsp; One possible culprit is our long break from high inflation between the early 1980s and 2021.&nbsp; Older Americans have forgotten–and younger Americans never knew–that controlling inflation means slowing down the&nbsp;increase&nbsp;in prices, not reversing costs to those of previous years.&nbsp; The latter would require nothing less than deliberately sending the country into economic decline.&nbsp; Price increases are under control, but costs are not going back to pre-2021 levels. The economic toll of doing so would be far too high.

The nation also continues to struggle with major social challenges, including homelessness, exorbitant housing costs, and fentanyl addiction, all of which we see and feel here in Kansas. They need ongoing, thoughtful attention from policymakers. Blaming them on immigrants is neither accurate nor helpful.

Whatever the causes of today’s public opinion, Biden’s legacy and Vice President Harris’ candidacy both depend in large part on how Americans perceive the current state of the nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>“Are you better off than you were four years ago?”-Ronald ReaganIt is no secret that President Biden is unpopular.&nbsp; In the 2023&nbsp;Kansas Speaks&nbsp;poll, a whopping 62.8% of respondents were dissatisfied with Biden’s performance, versus 32.9% who were dissatisfied with fellow Democrat, Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp; Widespread approval of Biden’s withdrawal is one of the few issues these days that bring Democrats, Republicans and independents together.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The focus on Biden’s withdrawal centered on his age and his poor performance in the first Presidential debate–both legitimate concerns.&nbsp; Yet another issue lurks.&nbsp; By many measures, Biden’s presidency has been highly successful, characterized by a recovery from the COVID pandemic, a strong economy, falling violent crime rates, decreased poverty, and policies that have advanced the transition to domestically-produced clean energy and begun rebuilding the country’s decrepit infrastructure.&nbsp; One Biden policy even accomplished something no other President ever has–<a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/09/12/biden-child-tax-credit-poverty-doubled/">cutting the child poverty rate in half</a>, to an all-time low.&nbsp; Congress did not renew the program.Despite this, many voters&nbsp;perceive&nbsp;the country as doing poorly.&nbsp; In the first debate, former President Trump suggested that the country is worse off today than in the last year of his Administration.&nbsp; The year 2020 was so infamous that one TV commercial portrayed it as being in love with the Devil himself.&nbsp; It was the beginning and second-deadliest year of the COVID pandemic, which ultimately killed over a million Americans and tanked the economy.&nbsp; The murder of George Floyd triggered protests over police brutality throughout the nation– most were peaceful, but some turned deadly.&nbsp; Finally, Trump’s term culminated with the events of January 6, 2021.&nbsp; Yet Trump has no trouble claiming that the country is worse off today–and many Americans seem to agree.&nbsp; Why?Except for his own approval ratings, most numbers look very strong for Biden’s legacy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/fbi-data-shows-that-violent-crimes-in-the-u-s-decreased-in-2023">Violent crime is decreasing</a>, and remains&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2022/10/31/violent-crime-is-a-key-midterm-voting-issue-but-what-does-the-data-say/#:~:text=In%202021%2C%20the%20most%20recent,the%20National%20Crime%20Victimization%20Survey.">far below the levels of the mid-1960s to mid-1990s</a>. Unemployment dropped dramatically after the pandemic, and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/charts/employment-situation/civilian-unemployment-rate.htm">remains at low levels</a>.&nbsp; The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.officialdata.org/us/stocks/s-p-500/2020#:~:text=Stock%20market%20returns%20since%202020&amp;text=This%20is%20a%20return%20on,%2C%20or%209.34%25%20per%20year.">stock market&nbsp;</a>is doing well. After a spike in 2021-22 ,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-inflation-rates/">inflation has been stabilized</a>.&nbsp; This requires high interest rates, but the Federal Reserve predicts&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/fed-near-interest-rate-cut-d303dbd5">these can start coming down&nbsp;</a>by the end of the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even issues important to&nbsp;Republicans&nbsp;look good for Biden.&nbsp; For example, recently, unauthorized crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border have&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/07/16/texas-border-migrant-apprehensions-decrease/">declined steeply</a>, and there haven’t been any violent antifa or Black Lives Matter protests in years.Despite all the good news,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/08/politics/biden-polling-independents/index.html">independent voters</a>&nbsp;perceive the country to be in trouble under Biden. &nbsp; One possible culprit is our long break from high inflation between the early 1980s and 2021.&nbsp; Older Americans have forgotten–and younger Americans never knew–that controlling inflation means slowing down the&nbsp;increase&nbsp;in prices, not reversing costs to those of previous years.&nbsp; The latter would require nothing less than deliberately sending the country into economic decline.&nbsp; Price increases are under control, but costs are not going back to pre-2021 levels. The economic toll of doing so would be far too high.The nation also continues to struggle with major social challenges, including homelessness, exorbitant housing costs, and fentanyl addiction, all of which we see and feel here in Kansas. They need ongoing, thoughtful attention from policymakers. Blaming them on immigrants is neither accurate nor helpful.Whatever the causes of today’s public opinion, Biden’s legacy and Vice President Harris’ candidacy both depend in large part on how Americans perceive the current state of the nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;Are you better off than you were four years ago?

INSIGHT KANSAS: Back to 2020?

The Barton Dance Department, in partnership with Aly’s Dance Studio and Be Studios, is holding three “Ballet Master Class” sessions in August for dance students ages 10-18. &nbsp;

The first Master Class will be taught by Artistic Director of Ballet Salina Mara Klenda from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 8 in Studio 34 on the Barton campus. The second Master Class will be taught by Barton Dance Program Director Danika Bielek from 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 10 in Studio 34 on the Barton campus, and the final class will be taught by Cecchetti Ballet Instructor Kelley Scott from 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 17 at Aly’s Dance Studio, 1701 K96 Highway, in Great Bend.

Each class will be taught by different instructors who are ballet experts and will focus on the specific artistry and qualities that define ballet. Dances and music from the “Nutcracker” ballet will be featured to promote the upcoming production of “A Nutcracker for the Golden Belt,” which will take place Nov. 21-24. For dancers interested in being part of the production, these classes can help prepare them for the upcoming auditions.

Auditions will be held from 10-11 a.m. for ages 7-11 and 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. for ages 12 and up on Aug. 31. Callbacks will be at 2 p.m. that day.

Barton Dance Department to host Ballet Master Class

Michael EG Reynolds, 68, of Larned, appeared in custody in the Pawnee County District Court Wednesday morning for a scheduled evidentiary Preliminary Hearing.

Prior to the commencement of the hearing, District Magistrate Judge Keaton Gleason took up written correspondence by the defendant to the Court regarding Reynold’s appointed counsel.  After consultation with the parties, Judge Gleason granted defense counsel’s request to withdraw.  The Court then advised the parties the Preliminary Hearing will be re-scheduled once new counsel is appointed and had an opportunity to review the case file.

Reynolds is charged with one count of Intentional Murder in the Second Degree, one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Firearm. The charges stem from a joint investigation by the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and Coroner Dr. Lyle Noordhoek into the shooting death of Dr. Tomas Garza, 52, of Larned, on March 30, 2024. The investigation is ongoing.

The defendant is being held in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff with bond set at $250,000 cash or surety.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Breastfeeding also positively impacts families financially as well as the environment. However, many have not heard about the positive impacts on a mother’s health. Women who breastfeed their children lower their risk of breast cancer. According to an epidemiological study published in the The Lancet, breastfeeding is dose specific. For every 12 months of breastfeeding, the risk of breast cancer goes down by 4.3%. This can be for one child or a combination of children. Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes as reported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Finally, studies also show that breastfeeding can help lower the risk of osteoporosis and stroke. That is a lot of health benefits that make for healthier women and society. And those are only the physical health benefits. There are also social-emotional benefits as well that help with bonding and parenting.Just because a woman wants to breastfeed though doesn’t mean that she has the support to do so. While breastfeeding is natural, it isn’t always easy. The World Breastfeeding Week campaign this year focuses on survival, health and wellbeing. It will showcase the need to improve breastfeeding support to reduce inequalities that exist in our society with a special focus on breastfeeding in times of emergencies and crisis. A mother who is breastfeeding can continue to feed her baby without the need for clean water, formula or a way to boil water. Feeding her baby is one less thing to think about during an emergency or crisis.Join us to celebrate mothers and to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding and human milk feeding for the 14th annual National Breastfeeding Month. In Hays and Ellis County, La Leche League of the Western Plains and the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition will hold a celebration on August 14th, 2024 at 10 am during our regularly scheduled La Leche League meeting.
