It takes a village to hunt. The state of Kansas offers hundreds of thousands of acres of public land for the sport, but individual landowners also contribute by allowing walk-in hunting on their property. The newly established group Kansas Hunters for Access has already hosted a pair of appreciation dinners for landowners in the state. Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner said another is planned for Friday, Feb. 28 at the Claflin Community Center, 409 A Street.

"This is just a great way for hunters to show their appreciation for what these landowners are doing," he said. "It's hard to get hunting access. That's probably the number one complaint we get from hunters throughout the state is, 'I can't find a place to go hunting.' The walk-in hunting program allows that."

The appreciation supper will include giveaways for walk-in hunting cooperators, their families, and their friends. The group is looking for cash and other prizes to be donated to the landowners. All donations will be given back to area farmers and ranchers.

The supper begins at 6 p.m. For more information on the event in Claflin, email [email protected] or call (785)-587-4936.
