Recognizing the significant impact&nbsp;4-H&nbsp;programs have on local youth, the Barton County Commission adopted a proclamation Tuesday morning declaring&nbsp;Oct. 5-11&nbsp;as&nbsp;National 4-H Week.

Michelle Beran, Cottonwood Extension District family and community wellness agent for Barton County, along with four 4-H ambassadors and the new 4-H agent&nbsp;Ben Sims, presented the proclamation to the commissioners. It highlighted 4-H as America's largest youth development organization, connecting millions of young people, educators, volunteers, and alumni across the United States.

Melody Braddy&nbsp;of Hoisington, a delegate to the National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C., highlighted the opportunity to be a part of the&nbsp;Kansas Youth Leadership Forum (KYLF)&nbsp;and the national conference, where delegates presented on issues like youth mental health. 

“This is my favorite because you get to meet youth from all over the state, who are there because they want to be there and they want to learn about leadership," she said.

Praising the diverse project opportunities,&nbsp;Samantha Negaard&nbsp;of Great Bend said her favorite part about being in 4-H is the performing arts. “These easily transfer to school activities and has helped with public speaking and confidence.”

D.J. Wyant&nbsp;of Hoisington, a member of the junior leaders and ambassador program, said he enjoys 4-H for its public service activities and for improving his public speaking and leadership skills.

They can even earn national honors, said&nbsp;Russell Kern&nbsp;of Ellinwood. His favorite project is foods and nutrition, which has helped him win national awards and scholarships. He was recently named the&nbsp;Youth Educator of the Year&nbsp;by the Home Bakers Association.

The commission recognized the importance of 4-H's four core values —&nbsp;Head,&nbsp;Heart,&nbsp;Hands, and&nbsp;Health&nbsp;— which help youth “become beyond ready” for future challenges. The program, delivered by the&nbsp;Cooperative Extension, aims to turn participants into leaders, entrepreneurs, and visionaries by encouraging them to tackle critical societal issues.

The commissioners voted to adopt the proclamation, formally encouraging all citizens to recognize 4-H for its continued role in empowering youth to “learn by doing” and make a positive impact on their communities.

“4-H is very near and dear to my heart,” said Commission Chairperson&nbsp;Tricia Schlessiger, District 4, noting her kids take part in the program. “The focus is on the fair, but there is learning that takes place throughout the year.”

“This is something that will carry you through life,” said Commissioner&nbsp;Barb Esfeld, District 2, of the lessons learned. “There is so much you can do (in 4-H). I am proud of you guys.”

Beran said the new 4-H year is set to begin&nbsp;Oct. 1&nbsp;for nearly&nbsp;150 members&nbsp;across seven community clubs in Barton County, following the conclusion of the Kansas State Fair. The county's 4-H program offers&nbsp;50 projects&nbsp;covering areas such as communication, leadership, citizenship, and career options.

She said 4-H involves much more than the annual&nbsp;Barton County Fair, which is managed in partnership with the Fair Association. The&nbsp;4-H Holding Board continues to manage and maintain the 4-H educational buildings, which are used for club meetings, day camps, and archery practice.

Beran also introduced&nbsp;Sims&nbsp;as the new 4-H agent, joining the extension office after three years as an agriculture and 4-H agent in Greenwood County. He said his wife is from Wilson and that is why they wanted to relocate to this area.

The two noted a slow but positive trend in enrollment, with the state pushing for a&nbsp;10% increase&nbsp;in membership over the next five years. They acknowledged that balancing 4-H with other activities is a challenge for families.

The agents said the local program is seeking project leaders and volunteers, who must follow a registration process for risk management. Volunteers are needed for single events, like&nbsp;County Club Days&nbsp;in February, or for longer-term project guidance.

Project records will be evaluated&nbsp;Oct. 6&nbsp;in Rice County with six other counties.

The Cottonwood Extension District covers Barton and Ellis counties.&nbsp;&nbsp;

PAWNEE COUNTY– William M. Boos, 54 of Ellis, appeared in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff Tuesday before Pawnee Magistrate Judge Julie Cowell for Felony First Appearances on a four count felony complaint, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

Boos is currently charged with two counts of Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property in excess of $5,000 done with the intent to obtain scrap metal, one count of Theft of at least $25,000, but less than $100,000, and one count of Theft of at least $1,500, but less than $25,000.

The charges stem from an investigation by the Pawnee County Sheriff into the theft of radiators from approximately 26 vintage automobiles at two separate rural locations in the western portion of Pawnee County occurring between April 18, 2025, and June 20, 2025. The thefts were reported on June 29, 2025. The investigation determined approximately 40 vehicles were damaged.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled October 14.

Under Kansas law, criminal damage to property becomes as aggravated offense if the damage is done with the intent to obtain regulated scrap materials.

The defendant remains in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff with bond set at $65,000 cash or surety.

Kan. man accused of theft of radiators from 26 vintage vehicles

As of Sept. 30, 2025, the U.S. Department of Treasury has ended paper checks for most federal payments, including Social Security, Veterans Affairs benefits, and tax refunds. Under the federal executive order Modernizing Payments To and From America’s Bank Accounts, most recipients will be required to receive their funds electronically.

Currently, about 7% of tax refunds and 2% of federal benefits are still issued via paper checks. However, paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, or altered than electronic payments.

Approved options for electronic payments include:

· Direct Deposit into a checking or savings account

· Prepaid debit card accounts (such as the Direct Express® card) which often includes extra fees

While limited exemptions may apply, federal guidelines are still pending. The Social Security Administration will be contacting current paper-check beneficiaries directly.

Great Bend SCA hosting OctoBEAR Fest in Raymond on Oct. 25

Barton Community College’s annual literary publication, “Prairie Ink”, has begun accepting entries for its 17th edition.&nbsp;

The editors are looking for the following types of original work to be considered for publication: fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, drama, graphic narrative, biography, photography, sketch, painting, digital art, and pictures of 3D art. Submissions will be accepted through Nov. 30, with submissions after that considered for the following edition.

Barton students, alumni, and all residents of the seven counties in Barton’s service region: Barton, Pawnee, Rush, Russell, Rice, Stafford, and Ellsworth counties, as well as Barton’s Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth, and Grandview Plaza campuses, are encouraged to submit entries.

Prairie Ink also sponsors multiple writing workshops throughout the year. They are on the following dates: Oct. 16, Nov. 20, Jan. 22, Feb. 19, March 26, and April 23 (issue 17 release party). These workshops include topics such as plot structure, character design, flash fiction, narrative style, elements of fiction, poetry, and how to start a story.

Barton also offers writing classes each semester. The spring semester will feature courses in Copy Editing, Introduction to Literature, and World Literature.

Barton Community College’s literary annual 'Prairie Ink' accepting submissions

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland Tuesday announced that $1.5 million is available for a sixth round of Historic Economic Asset Lifeline (HEAL) grants to revitalize dilapidated and underutilized downtown buildings in small communities across the state. These grants help close the financial gaps for communities striving to make their downtown districts economically vibrant.

Since the launch of the program in 2021, $7 million has been awarded to fund more than 100 different community projects throughout Kansas. The state investment has leveraged $36.7 million in local matching funds.

“Most small communities have plenty of buildings in their downtown, but not enough of them are ready to be occupied by small businesses,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Restoring these beautiful buildings brings the structures back to productive use as centers of commerce and helps keep downtowns alive and vital.”

The HEAL grant program helps communities revitalize downtown buildings as spaces for new or expanding businesses, housing, arts and culture, civic engagement, childcare or entrepreneurial activities.

Submitted projects must show potential to become economic drivers in the community and demonstrate that the space will be occupied by the end of the project. There must be proof of 1:1 matching funds from the building owner that will be required at the time of application.

The application window opens October 1 and closes December 31. Awardees will be notified in March. Communities that received HEAL grants in fall 2024 or spring 2025 are not eligible to apply for this round of funding.

Commerce offers $1.5M in HEAL Grants to revitalize downtown buildings

Great Bend’s central location in the county and state can be
a good thing. Not so much when county crews are working in the further reaches
of a large jurisdiction. Tuesday morning, the Barton County Commission approved
the extension of a lease on approximately 2.4 acres of land west of Heizer. County
Works Director Chris Schartz explained why the plot is beneficial to the Road
and Bridge Department.

“It’s one of the pits we use to store sand and park
equipment,” he said. “This year, we’re actually using it to sand seal out of. It’s
one of our remote pits that makes it closer for the sand sealing so we don’t
have to come all the way back to Great Bend every time. It does help alleviate
time and costs.”

The county has used the plot for some time, dating back before
current owner James Murphy purchased the land. The county maintains 389 miles
of paved roads. Having property spread out around the county is beneficial in
many ways.

“When we do the sand and sealing, we do it by quadrants,”
Schartz said. “We have a pit in Odin, we have a pit in Ellinwood, we have a pit
in the northwest – just west of 281 northwest of Hoisington - then we have this
one that’s west of Heizer.”

The commission agreed to extend the lease through October of
2030 with an annual payment of $1,500 to Murphy.

The auction is part of the 21st Annual Rodeo, held at Barton County Fair Expo III Indoor Arena, two miles west on 10th and Patton Road, Great Bend. These items are all new products and most likely will sell for well under their retail value. Barton and Nex-Tech Wireless partner to offer computer safety and Android classes

On behalf of the Hays Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) announces the fallen officer escort of Sgt. Scott Heimann from Wichita to Hays on Sept. 30. Sgt. Heimann died in the line of duty on Sept. 28.

The escort, to include the Kansas law enforcement and a larger first responder community, will leave Wichita at approximately noon and travel north on I-135 through Salina. They will continue west out of Salina on I-70 to Exit 157.

The escort will enter the city of Hays via south U.S. 183, Exit 157, turning east on 27th Street. They will continue south on Hall Street, east on 13th Street, north on Vine Street, then west on 20th Street to conclude at Hays Memorial Chapel, 1906 Pine Street.

During the escort, motorists traveling along this route may experience delays.

Heimann, 32, was killed early Sunday after being shot by a domestic violence suspect. Funeral services have been set for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2 at FHSU's Gross Memorial Coliseum. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

A time has not been provided by KHP but city officials indicate the escort should be arrive in Hays between 2:30 and 3 p.m. This information will be updated as soon as details are confirmed.

United Way of Central Kansas (UWCK), in partnership with The Pando Initiative, is bringing Reality U back to Great Bend Middle School for the 10th year, equipping eighth-grade students with the tools to build strong financial futures.

Reality U is a hands-on simulation where students receive a mock life scenario—including career, salary, family situation, and debt. They must then navigate real-world financial decisions such as paying rent, buying groceries, and managing transportation—all within their assigned budgets. The program highlights the challenges of financial responsibility and helps students understand the long-term impact of money management.

“Reality U gives students a chance to see how the choices they make today can affect their future,” said Charell Owings “Learning about budgeting, saving, and smart decision-making in middle school sets them up for better habits down the road and helps prepare them for real-life responsibilities.”

In addition to the simulation, students will participate in breakout sessions designed to take a deeper dive into topics that Great Bend Middle School identified as important for student success. Sessions and speakers include:

· Preparing for High School –GBHS Counselors

· Youth Crew – Tyler Morton, 20th Judicial District Juvenile Services

United Way bringing Reality U financial literacy simulation back to local students

Venice Mallow Venice mallow (Hibiscus trionum). This attractive annual species is also called “flower-of-an-hour” because each flower remains open for just a few hours before being shed. Venice mallow is in the Malvaceae family, and is related to velvetleaf and common mallow, as well as cotton. The species name trionum refers to the normally three-lobed appearance of the leaves.

Ecology - venice mallow is an introduced plant that has become naturalized in much of the United States. A native of southern Europe, the plant was introduced as an ornamental before escaping cultivation to become a weed. The species is most prevalent in the eastern part of Kansas, but can occur anywhere within the state. It can be found in gardens, cultivated fields, waste areas, pastures, and roadways.

Identification - venice mallow is an annual species reproducing by seeds. It normally grows 0.5 to 2 feet tall, with its many branches often spreading out from the base prior to curving upward. The stems are covered with stiff, short hairs. Leaves are alternate and borne on stalks (petioles), with hairs on the lower surfaces but generally smooth on the top surfaces. The cotyledon (seed) leaves are heart-shaped, and the first true leaves are rounded with gently lobed edges. Subsequent true leaves are normally deeply divided into three lobes, but may have as many as seven lobes. The center lobe is longer than the side lobes, but all are gently lobed to toothed along the edges. Flowers are up to 2.5 inches wide, are short-lived, and originate from petioles arising from the junction of the stem and leaf petioles. The flowers have five petals, are white to pale yellow, and have a reddish to dark purple center. Seeds are produced in a globe-shaped capsule surrounded by a papery husk called a calyx. At maturity, the calyx and capsule dry and rupture, exposing the small (0.1 inch) seeds, which are kidney-shaped, dark brown, and rough.

Because Venice mallow is an indeterminate plant, flowers and seeds are produced throughout the growing season until a killing frost in the fall. Like its close relative, velvetleaf, Venice mallow seeds have an extremely hard seed coat. Consequently, seeds may lie dormant for many years, even decades, before emerging. Management - historically, it was most often problematic in soybean production areas in Kansas. In recent years, newer herbicides and herbicide-resistant soybean varieties have reduced its prevalence in the crop. Herbicides which effectively control Venice mallow in soybean include 2,4-D (Group 4), glyphosate (Group 9), and glufosinate (Group 10) in herbicide-resistant varieties, as well as Group 14 herbicides (sulfentrazone, saflufenacil, flumioxazin) and Group 15 herbicides (pyroxasulfone) in conventional soybean. Group 4 herbicides (2,4-D, dicamba, fluroxypyr) can be used if Venice mallow occurs in corn or sorghum.

Integrated weed management techniques should be the first line of defense when dealing with any weed situation, and this is particularly true in crops such as sunflowers, cotton, or dry beans. With fewer herbicides available to control Venice mallow and other weeds in these crops, prevention as well as mechanical and cultural control practices are even more important. With the longevity of Venice mallow seed viability, attention should be given to the prevention of seedset and movement of seed from infested fields to clean fields.

The Golden Belt Trail Alliance, a relatively new 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to building trails in Central Kansas, is hosting a Lake Barton Trail Family Night on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Brandon Steinert, coach of the Golden Belt Badgers Mountain Bike Team and secretary for the Alliance, said the trail is a good way to spend an evening outdoors.

"As a guy who definitely gets out on the trail and gets outside quite a bit, I can vouch for the mental-health boost you get from just being outside, moving, being in nature, and being away from technology - putting your phone away for a little while," he said. "When you're out on the trail, you really feel like you've escaped Central Kansas, even. It's very woodland-feeling. You feel like you're out in the forest."

The original Lake Barton trail loop makes up approximately two miles of riding. The small loops accompanying the trail can boost the ride to approximately six miles. Steinert said the Lake Barton trail is ideal for beginners.

"There's not a whole lot of what we would call 'technical' parts, which are hard, rocky stuff you'd have to climb up," he said. "There's not a whole lot of that on this trail. It's mostly swooping through the trees. It's a great place to learn how to ride a mountain bike on a trail."

Golden Belt Trail Alliance President Jake Morris said Family Night is designed to get more people onto the trail to enjoy the hard work that has been put into it.

"This is a great way to get acquainted with the trail alongside the folks who know it best, because they’ve helped build and maintain it for years,” he said.

The Golden Belt Badgers Mountain Bike Team was formed in late 2024, for riders in grades 6-12 who wish to pursue mountain biking as a sport.

“This trail is a huge asset for the Golden Belt Badgers,” said Team Director Neil Frizell. “It’s very similar to many of the trails where the kids will be racing, so it’s prime training ground.” 

Coaches of the Golden Belt Badgers Mountain Bike Team will be present to provide guided rides and hikes through portions of the trail. Steinert said the team is preparing for the next season, which practices from January through March with races on five weekends in April and May.
