According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 218,000 Americans lost their lives due to drug overdoses in 2022 and 2023. Plenty of tragedy still surrounds many of the cases that do not end in death. That's why recovery is so important. As part of National Recovery Month, Rise Up Central Kansas Director Amy Ferguson highlighted some of the organization's programs during Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting.

"We focus on prevention, intervention, and resilience," she said. "One of our services is called Don't Look Back Transport Program. That means we can help you get you treatment. We can help you get to your mental health meetings, 12-step meetings. Then there's a Get Your Life Back program. That's when sombody has lost their identification, it creates a giant barrier to being able to move on in their recovery, getting employment."

Rise Up recently partnered with Communities Organizing to Promote Equity (COPE) to help children with school or basic life needs. Rise Up has helped 34 children so far this year. Rise Up also offers Creating Resilience Through Connections training to teach how to provide support to children during a crisis. The four Oxford Houses in Barton County have also provided support.

"Oxford is so important to our community," Ferguson said. "It works miracles. A miracle doesn't mean it happens forever. Sometimes things happen and we step off. But Oxford is always there to pull them back in."

On Friday at 5 p.m. at Jack Kilby Square in downtown Great Bend, Rise Up will host a Recovery Out Loud, Every Voice Matters event. The evening will include Narcan training and a march, free food, 90-second shares, a Gone But Not Forgotten moment of Silence, and a red-ribbon circle to symbolize unity and hope and raise awareness for the destruction of drugs in America.

Friday activities planned in Great Bend as part of National Recovery Month

When it comes to tourism, there are many different avenues to attract visitors
to your town. History, art, attractions and sports are all near the top of the
list to interest folks to visiting a community. Possibly a lesser known
approach is to schedule large meetings or conferences where groups around the state
or region come to attend. 

The Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau is part
of the ‘Meet Kansas’ coalition in an effort to get meeting planners to schedule
their events in Great Bend. Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe was in Great
Bend Wednesday morning to present Meet Kansas representatives with a $10,000 grant.


"One of the things we really try to push with tourism is collaboration," said Jobe. "Meet Kansas is such a great example of this. Bringing in meeting planners and telling them the story of Kansas...I love it. We love multi-cities, multi-counties and multi-regions working together."

Great Bend is among 18 communities throughout Kansas that is a member in Meet
Kansas. The grant will assist in the first Meet Kansas showcase where all the
members will gather in Topeka this year. Each community will have a booth with

On Sept. 4, the 30th Annual Kids Ag Day took place at Diamond K Farms, now owned and managed by Josh Koelsch, marking three decades of educating Barton County’s fourth-grade students about the vital role of agriculture in everyday life. This year’s event, a program of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, was chaired by Scott Dewerff of KanEquip and began with a special appreciation breakfast, generously provided by High Plains Farm Credit, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by dignitaries and elected officials.

Reflecting on the legacy of this impactful event, Chamber President Megan Barfield expressed heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, committee members, and businesses who have supported Kids Ag Day over the years. "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped make this program a success for 30 years. From the volunteers to the businesses, and of course the committee members, their dedication has made it possible to reach thousands of students and expand their understanding of agriculture," Barfield said.

Special recognition was given to founding committee members Jerry Esfeld, Ron Koelsch, Kevin Mauler, and the late Gerald Mauler, whose vision and commitment established Kids Ag Day in the early 1990s. Their passion laid the groundwork for what has now become a beloved annual tradition, inspiring students and communities alike.

Over the past 30 years, several local farms have generously hosted Kids Ag Day, each contributing to the success and growth of the event. Diamond K Farms, originally owned by Ron Koelsch and now managed by his son Josh Koelsch, has been a frequent host. Other host farms include Brining Farms, operated by the late Roger Brining, and 4M Farms, run by Kevin Mauler. These farms have provided the perfect setting for students to experience hands-on agricultural education, offering a unique learning environment to explore the various components of farming, ranching, and modern agricultural practices.

Originally conceived as a way to teach fourth graders about farming and agriculture, Kids Ag Day has grown significantly over the years. Today, it serves not only as an educational tool but also as a gateway for students to explore the broad array of career opportunities within agriculture—whether they come from farming backgrounds or not. The day’s hands-on learning activities offer a deeper understanding of everything from veterinary medicine and crop science to emerging technologies that shape the future of the industry.

“For many students, this is their first real exposure to agriculture outside of what they see in passing,” Barfield noted. “Kids Ag Day opens their eyes to the many possibilities available in this field, whether it’s managing a farm, working in ag technology, or even running their own business.”

As the students made their way around Diamond K Farms, they engaged in a variety of interactive stations that demonstrated farming practices, animal care, and agricultural technology, among other topics. Over 400 students participated this year, and with the help of more than 60 volunteers, the event ran smoothly from start to finish.

Scott Dewerff, this year’s committee chair, praised the dedication of the volunteers who make the event possible, including local high school FFA groups. “The hours of service given by our volunteers is simply remarkable. Whether it’s the FFA students or members of the ag community, each one shares a passion for agriculture and a desire to connect that passion with our youth. It’s that enthusiasm that makes this event so special and impactful. They give their time, knowledge, and energy to ensure the next generation understands and appreciates the importance of agriculture.”

Kids Ag Day has become a model for other communities looking to educate their youth about agriculture. "When other towns are looking to create their own programs, they come to see how we do things here," Barfield said. "This event continues to raise the bar, and that’s thanks to the incredible volunteers and local support that have made it what it is today."

In a touching reflection on the event's legacy, Barfield shared how Kids Ag Day has come full circle for many local families: “We now have students attending this event whose parents were part of the very first Kids Ag Day class 30 years ago. It’s incredible to see how this program has impacted multiple generations. These parents are now watching their own children experience the same excitement and learning opportunities that opened their eyes to the importance of agriculture all those years ago.”

As the Chamber and the community look ahead to future Kids Ag Day events, the spirit of collaboration and education remains at the forefront. What started as an event filled with hayrack rides and horseshoe demonstrations has evolved into a comprehensive agricultural education experience for the next generation, with no signs of slowing down.

Great Bend Chamber celebrates 30 years of Kids Ag Day

The pilots and planes for 2024 Great Bend Airfest are beginning to arrive ahead of the busy three-day weekend at the Great Bend Municipal Airport this Friday through Sunday. In May, the Barton County Commission agreed to increase the county's sponsorship for the event from $8,000 to $25,000. 

Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes attended Tuesday's county commission meeting to hash out final details and award tickets on behalf of the county. As part of the county's sponsorship, each community in Barton County will get a flyover. With help from the city of Great Bend and USD 428, the first flights take off Friday night.

"We did create the Game Day Flyover for the Panther football game," Hayes said. "So Friday night, the Panthers get the flyover. They also get a Jeep bringing in the Ladies for Liberty. The Ladies for Liberty will be singing."

Central Plains High School in Claflin and Great Bend were the only two Barton County schools with home games Friday night. The flyover in Claflin is scheduled for between 6:35 and 6:50 p.m., and the flyover in Great Bend will occur just before kickoff at 7 p.m.

Hayes also provided updates about the three days of Airfest. Because Saturday is a full-day event, attendees can gain admission with a ticket, leave, and return as long as they have a wristband. There will be plenty to do even when planes are not in the sky.

"More than just the airshow is that you get to go tour the planes, walk through the B-29, and talk to the pilots," said Hayes. "That's part of the fun and experience of the down time. It's basically a living museum."

More than 1,000 students are expected on Friday for Area School Day thanks, in part, to the Golden Belt Community Foundation. More than 10,000 attendees are anticipated for Saturday. Water and ear plugs will be on sale at Airfest for $1. Several food vendors will also be present. Airfest tickets may still be purchased online or at the gate with a card, check, or cash. Hayes suggested purchasing tickets online to save a small fee if using a card. Pets will not be allowed inside the airshow gate.

Barton Community College will host three “Meet the President” events across the Barton County service area to introduce Barton President Dr. Marcus Garstecki to community members.

Dr. Garstecki will be available in the cafeteria at Central Plains High School in Claflin from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Sept. 25. On Oct. 23, he will make a stop in Hoisington at the Columbus Club from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Followed by a stop in Ellinwood at Gather from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Oct. 30.

These events allow community members, local leaders, and alumni to meet and engage with Dr. Garstecki. Each setting will allow for one-on-one conversations and brief comments from the president at 5:00 p.m.

on Aug. 12, the City of Great Bend is looking to fill the assistant
city administrator position he left vacant. 

The application process for the position
will remain open until Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. Burns said interested

for the assistant city administrator job. The job description lists the
position getting paid between $86,551 and $129,838.

9 applications received for Great Bend Assist. City Administrator job

HODGMAN COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 8:30a.m. Thursday in Hodgeman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Sterling Straight Truck driven by Aaron Anthony&nbsp;Lari, 44, Ness City, was northbound on Hodgeman County 216 Road approaching Kansas 156. 

As the truck started to cross Kansas 156, it struck a westbound 2009 Chevy Silverado driven by Cain Villalobos-Hernandez, 34, Great Bend. After impact, the Chevy came to rest on 216 Road north of Kansas 156.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EMS transported Villalobos-Hernandez to the Hodgeman County Hospital and a passenger in the pickup Jessica Juana Villalobos, 40, Great Bend, to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Lari was not injured.&nbsp; All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The Historic Wolf Hotel and Ellinwood Underground Tunnels are ready to combine the past, food and drink, and Halloween into a fun evening. A Haunted Living Revelry is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. Ellinwood Underground City Foundation President Rick Casagrande said a tour of the tunnels will include stops in six different rooms, each with their own food and drink.

"In each location, we're going to have the historic person who was involved with each space there to greet everyone," he said. "Their spirit will be there and they will be able to talk with them and tell them a little bit about what was going on 100 and some years ago in those spaces."

Stops include the bank, harness shop, barber shop, parlor, Sunflower Dining Room, and the salon in the Wolf Tunnel. Chicken and dumplings, green beans, and a biscuit will be served in the Sunflower Room along with mimosas. Cost is $60 per person and the tours will be capped at 50 participants each.

"We'll start one at 7 and the other will begin at 8 p.m.," Casagrande said. "If we have a lot of people who are interested and go beyond the 100, we are considering adding a third time."

A silent auction will follow the tours from 9-11 p.m. A paranormal candlelight tour costs an additional $15 and begins at midnight. All proceeds go toward replacing the Wolf Hotel's foundation.

Ellinwood Underground Tunnels coming to life for Oct. 25 Halloween event

The 2024 Surgeon General Report highlights the needs of parents. The document starts with a quote “Raising children is sacred work. It should matter to all of us.” Being a parent is not easy, unfortunately, as the old saying goes, “Kids do not come with handbooks!”

Every year the Surgeon General advisory report highlights a public health issue and provides recommendations for how it should be addressed. Advisories are reserved for significant public health challenges that require the nations immediate awareness and action.

Here are some of the highlights from the document:

Parents consistently report experiencing high levels of stress compared to other adults

· 33% of parents report high levels of stress in the past month compared to 20% of other adults.

· 48% of parents say that most days their stress is completely overwhelming compared to 26% among other adults.

Parents and caregivers experience a multitude of unique stressors from raising children

These stressors include, but are not limited to:

· Financial strain, economic instability, and poverty

· Cultural pressures and children’s futures

We must do more to better support parents and caregivers

The work of parenting is essential not only for the health of children but also for the health of society. Amid a youth mental health crisis, the work of raising a child is just as valuable as the work performed in a paid job and critically important when it comes to the impact on the future of society.

The report also highlights some ways based on our roles how we can help. For example, employers can help by expanding policies and programs that support the well-being of parents and caregivers in the workplace, implement training for managers on stress management and work-life harmony, and provide access to comprehensive and affordable high-quality mental health care.

Communities, community organizations and schools can foster open dialogue about parental stress, mental health, and well-being, create opportunities to cultivate supportive social connections among parents and caregivers, and elevate the voices of parents and caregivers to shape community programs and investments.

Family and friends can reach out and offer practical support with household or everyday tasks, connect with parents and caregivers in your life on a regular basis, learn about mental health challenges parents and caregivers may face.

In the Cottonwood District, we partner with the Barton County Health Department to provide Becoming a Mom classes that support prenatal families and we hope to provide the same service in Ellis County in the near future. The goal is to bring families together at the very beginning of their parenting journey to support each other as well build the relationships with community services so parents know where to go when they need extra support.

We also offer Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR) which is a suicide prevention program as well as other topics around mental health such as stress and stress management.

We have wide range of educational materials in our bookstore to support parents with fact sheets covering topics such as child development, screen time, family meals, and choosing appropriate childcare. https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/

Finally, we partner with schools from child care to the university level to provide programming based on the needs of the teachers, students, and parents.

 </figure>The 2024 Surgeon General Report highlights the needs of parents. The document starts with a quote “Raising children is sacred work. It should matter to all of us.” Being a parent is not easy, unfortunately, as the old saying goes, “Kids do not come with handbooks!”Every year the Surgeon General advisory report highlights a public health issue and provides recommendations for how it should be addressed. Advisories are reserved for significant public health challenges that require the nations immediate awareness and action.Here are some of the highlights from the document:Parents consistently report experiencing high levels of stress compared to other adultsAccording to 2023 data:· 33% of parents report high levels of stress in the past month compared to 20% of other adults.· 48% of parents say that most days their stress is completely overwhelming compared to 26% among other adults.Parents and caregivers experience a multitude of unique stressors from raising childrenThese stressors include, but are not limited to:· Financial strain, economic instability, and poverty· Time demands· Children’s health· Children’s safety· Parental isolation and loneliness· Technology and social media· Cultural pressures and children’s futuresWe must do more to better support parents and caregiversThe work of parenting is essential not only for the health of children but also for the health of society. Amid a youth mental health crisis, the work of raising a child is just as valuable as the work performed in a paid job and critically important when it comes to the impact on the future of society.The report also highlights some ways based on our roles how we can help. KOERNER: 2024 Surgeon General Report

Students in the welding program at Great Bend High School are experiencing cutting-edge training with the addition of a new Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) simulator. Oscar Torres, the school's Ag and Welding Instructor, introduced the simulator to his students last week, providing them with a valuable tool to hone their welding skills.

"The simulator is a great experience for the students," said Torres. "While it eliminates a few variables that you would encounter in real-world welding, it offers an opportunity for students to experience what welding looks and sounds like under the hood." He further emphasized the importance of the simulator in helping students develop the muscle memory needed to master the correct movement and speed of the welding torch to produce high-quality welds.

The simulator allows students to practice MIG welding techniques without the need for expensive consumables, making it a cost-effective solution for the program. Torres mentioned that some of his second-level students, after practicing on the simulator, have already moved on to actual welding projects.

Torres plans to continue incorporating the simulator into his curriculum to help students gain hands-on experience and prepare them for success in the welding industry.

Cop Shop (9/18)

On Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7:47 p.m., officers from the Great Bend Police Department responded to the 100 block of Chestnut Street in Great Bend in reference to the execution of a search warrant for illegal narcotics. Officers made entry to the residence and apprehended Phillip Ramey, age 36; Israel Klein, age 39 and Alex Tate, age 33. 

During a search of the residence, detectives located methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Ramey was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail. Ramey was booked on charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal carrying of a weapon and no drug tax stamp. He was booked in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

Klein was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp. Klein was booked in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

Tate was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, no drug tax stamp and aggravated child endangerment. Tate was booked in lieu of a $10,000 bond. A child was located at the residence and taken into police protective custody on scene.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (9/18)

Another big election is on the horizon and that means another set of deadlines for voters. Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler said the first big deadline for voters ahead of the Nov. 5 General Election is Oct. 15.

"Oct. 15 is the last day to register to vote," she said. "Oct. 16 is the first day we can do early voting and advanced ballots would be sent out. If we have all of our media back and our ballots, then we'll start on Oct. 16. We just encourage anybody who wants to come in and vote early to call us first to make sure we're ready to go."

Oct. 29 is the final day to apply for a mail ballot. Once the clerk's office is open for early voting, hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on the second floor of the Barton County Courthouse. A valid photo I.D. is required. The office will also be open for early voting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. Early voting ends at noon on Monday, Nov. 4.

Oct. 14 at noon is the deadline to file an affidavit for write-in candidacy. In this election in Barton County, that only applies to county offices. Write-in votes for a candidate for those county offices who has not completed an affidavit will not be counted.
