In July, the Great Bend City Council approved nearly $300,000 worth of
improvements to Heizer Park. Receiving a $161,260 grant from the Kansas Department of
Wildlife and Parks, the City of Great Bend changed the original plan for the
improvements, removing the playground equipment from the project. 

City
Administrator Logan Burns said Wildlife and Parks should be approving the
change soon.


"Right now, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks are telling me that it will be an October approval for the amendment we did make to that," said Burns. "Right now we're just waiting on approval from the travel organizations because of that amendment."

Once work begins, the improvements include a Musco mini-pitch double soccer
court system, restroom facility, irrigation for the entire park, new basketball
goals, new sand volleyball net, fencing and netting behind a new soccer field.

It is well understood that weather patterns can have a significant impact on grasshopper populations year to year. Warm, dry weather increases the survival of nymphs and adult grasshoppers, leading to increased egg production during the growing season, while cool, wet weather promotes fungal pathogens that can reduce egg and nymph survival. The abundance of grasshoppers being observed now is likely due to the weather patterns of the last couple seasons. Another factor influencing grasshopper populations is an abundance of food, especially broadleaf weeds. A diet high in these forbs leads to greater nymph survival, faster growth, larger adult grasshoppers, and increased egg production. Despite many areas still being impacted by some level of drought, sporadic rainfall over the growing season has helped weeds persist in many areas of the state, which has likely contributed to the noticeable number and diversity of grasshoppers currently being observed. As these weedy sources of food are exhausted or controlled, grasshoppers may shift their grazing over to anything still growing in the landscape. In areas with greater grasshopper pressure, seedling alfalfa and wheat could be at risk.

Before planting alfalfa, treatment should be considered if there are 15 or more grasshoppers per square yard around the planting area. Once planted and growing, consider treatment if 3-5 grasshoppers per square yard are found in the seedling alfalfa stand.

Vegetated borders around areas where wheat will be planted should be scouted ten days before planting. Consider treating those borders if there are 7 to 12 grasshoppers per square yard. Once growing, three or more grasshoppers per square yard within the field can destroy seedling wheat stands. If grasshopper populations are low to moderate, seed treatments can protect emerging wheat plants for several weeks if products are applied at the highest registered rate. Seed treatments will be less effective under severe grasshopper pressure as the insects can consume a large amount of leaf material before succumbing to the seed treatments. It is advisable to avoid planting too early, as this will help reduce the time that wheat must be protected.

CAMPBELL: Grasshoppers are abundant in many areas of Kansas

The Summer of ’74 was a memorable time for four couples at the First Christian Church in Great Bend. That summer, four couples tied the knot, so this summer, they are all celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.&nbsp;

Siblings Lane Moore and Leesa Butler are third generation members of Great Bend’s First Christian Church. Vicki Sheets joined the church when her family moved to Great Bend in the early 1970’s. Her fiancé John started attending during their courtship. The most recent addition of the four to the church were Clayton and Debbie Noffsinger who started attending First Christian when they moved to Great Bend in 1988.

Lane and Leesa kept their parents busy with weddings held six days apart. Lane married LaDonna on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 10, 1974 at LaDonna’s home church, The First Baptist Church in El Dorado, Kansas. Lane and LaDonna were both students at the time. After a short residency in Topeka, the couple moved to Great Bend where Lane went to work for the family business and LaDonna found employment with an engineering firm.

The Friday following the Moore wedding, August 16, 1974, Leesa married Roger Butler at her home church, First Christian Church in Great Bend. Both Roger and Leesa were students at Fort Hays State University at the time. They had planned their wedding for the following week, but realized classes were about to start, so moved their ceremony up a week.

The day following the Butler/Moore wedding (August 17, 1974) The First Christian Church played host to John and Vicki Sheets’ wedding. These high school sweethearts had to get permission from John’s parents as he was just 17 years old at the time.

Clayton and Debbie Noffsinger were the first of the four couples to be married. They wed at Debbie’s parent’s house in Hays on June 29, 1974. Both graduated from separate high schools in Hays. After their wedding, the Noffsingers lived in several rural areas of Russell and Ellis County before moving to Great Bend.

All four couples said their weddings were modest to simple for the mid 70s. There were no cross country trips for their honeymoons.

Lane &amp; LaDonna spent a few days in Kansas City, including time at Worlds of Fun and a Kansas City Royals game. Their biggest honeymoon challenge was the hotel they booked did not have record of their reservation when they arrived. The hotel took care of them and put them in the State Suite for one night.

The Moores had to hurry home, for sister Leesa’s wedding the following Friday at First Christian Church in Great Bend. Roger and Leesa were avid campers so they planned a camping trip in Colorado. To the point they spent their honeymoon nights sleeping on the ground at campsites. During their honeymoon they rode their motorcycles (dirt bikes) up Pikes Peak.

John &amp; Vicki had a weekend honeymoon in Hays following their wedding. While the weather was good for their wedding, the trip to Hays was a challenge driving through severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings. After the weekend, the newlyweds returned to Great Bend to go to work.

Clayton &amp; Debbie had to deal with air conditioner issues in their car as they traveled across Western Kansas on their way to Colorado. They spent their honeymoon touring the Garden of the Gods and other attractions around Colorado Springs.

50 years later all four couples continue to be active in First Christian Church and in the Great Bend community. Only six of every 100 marriages in America (U.S. Census Bureau information) lasts for 50 years. 

The Church’s Senior Pastor Josh Leu said “In a congregation our size, it’s amazing to think these 4 couples all married in the same summer and are able to celebrate 50 years together. To think they’ve been married, longer than I’ve been alive. All four couples have been pillars in our church for a long time, and continue to contribute in so many ways. They are great role models for all of us.”

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (9/17)

Starting at the end of the month or early October, Venture Corporation
will begin an asphalt resurfacing project on three different streets in Great
Bend. The Great Bend City Council approved the $938,900 project that will
include approximately 13 blocks on the 281 Bypass, 24th Street and
Harrison Street.


The 24th portion of the project will include the blocks between
McCormick Street to the Bypass. Public Works Director Jason Cauley was asked
about the poor condition of 24th on the east side of town.


"After further investigation, it was decided that section of 24th was poured on just soil," said Cauley. "There really is no base under that. It's better to just overlay that as is. This will use the existing asphalt as a base. They will do some full-depth patching to reinforce those areas. For the most part, it will do better to pave over the top of what is existing."

The Bypass will be resurfaced from 10th Street to Main. Harrison
will be improved from 10th Street to Broadway.


Venture was the only bid received for the project that will be paid through the
quarter-cent sales tax.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The summertime temperatures may be on the way out but Kansas has no shortage of wind, bugs, or other inclement weather. That has made indoor pickleball in Hoisington a hit. City Manager Jonathan Mitchell said courts are available at the Hoisington Auditorium.

"It is air-conditioned, climate-controlled, lighting is controlled, no wind, no outside variables, but an adult has to reserve it," he said.

The Hoisington Rec purchased two rolling pickleball nets in August 2023. Equipment for the game may be borrowed or players can bring their own. Those wanting to reserve the indoor courts for after-hours use need to call the city during business hours at (620) 653-4125.

"It's been very well utilized, very well used, so if you want to have a space when you get there, it helps to call in advance," Mitchell said. "If they're full there, you can just go out to the park and use those facilities. We do have two courts at Bicentennial Park."

Pickleball continues to be the fastest-growing sport in the United States with a 223 percent increase in players since 2020. The number of players increased more than 50 percent from 2022 to 2023.

The Great Bend City Council meeting Monday night lasted 23 minutes, but
Police Chief Steve Haulmark still had time to introduce the governing body to
three new police officers. 

This time last year, the police department was fully
staffed. Haulmark said with the three new hires, the department is currently
one short of being full.

through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center near Hutchinson. The KLETC

Great Bend Police Dept. welcomes three new officers

ELLSWORTH –&nbsp;Ellsworth Correctional Facility (ECF) resident Kyle Fullington, 37, died Monday, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections. 

Fullington was found unresponsive Monday morning. Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died Tuesday afternoon. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Fullington was a resident of the KDOC in cooperation with the State of Virginia under an interstate compact agreement.

Inmate at Ellsworth Correctional Facility rushed to hospital and dies

The goal of the 20th Judicial District's Juvenile Services is not to remove kids from their homes, but rather to rehabilitate youth and assist young people and their families in the community. The start of the school year is always a busy time for Juvenile Services staff, and Assistant Director Ryan Lichter said this year was no different as staff met with school officials last month.

"One of our big pushes is to get our agency out there into the community so they understand what we're about," he said. "That was a good platform for us to be able to explain the different programs we have, explain some of the differences that have occurred in the juvenile justice world over the last few years, and to kind of open their eyes a little bit as to what we do on a daily basis."

Juvenile Services was invited to a back-to-school in-service training in USD 431 Hoisington, and staff meets with USD 428 Great Bend counselors once a month for updates on students in both systems.&nbsp; Something as simple as missing school, or truancy, can lead to much bigger problems. Juvenile Services staff wants to prevent those problems from escalating.

"Some of the truancies can be kids as young as six, seven years old," Lichter said. "Those are the kids we truly believe are a child in need of care. If a kid that young isn't getting to school, there's probably something else happening elsewhere that's preventing them from getting there."

Students and families battling truancy may enter into a voluntary 90-day program that offers the student and family various services to correct the behavior. Juvenile Services' All-Star Program targets most sixth graders across Barton County with evidence-based programming to improve student decision-making. Parent Project classes are available to all parents. The 10-week course seeks to improve families as a whole. Those classes are from 6-9 p.m. each Tuesday beginning in September and January. Juvenile Services offering several programs to area students, families

Magic by Moonlight. This weekend's Great Bend Airfest will feature several spectacular aerobatic routines during the day, but some of the more graceful flying will take during Saturday's night show. Arkansas-based Matt Younkin, a third-generation pilot, will fly his Twin Beech 18 that evening. A set of lights atop the plane highlight its frame while a series of twinkling strobe lights provide a memorable effect on the bottom of the craft. Saturday's Airfest performance will be set to music.

"The lighting platform is paired with a very powerful soundtrack that only the Twin Beech can pull off," Younkin said. "It's timed, the light changes, with the different crescendos and highlights in the music. It's short and sweet, and when the music quits the airplane disappears and that's all she wrote."

 Younkin, who began flying at the age of 14, will also perform daytime aerobatic routines in the Beech 18. His plane was built in 1943, and the twin-engine, twin-tail planes were often used to train navigators during WWII. After the war, the versatile planes were used for just about everything, including crop dusting and hauling freight. Younkin imagines a time when young pilots flew the armed planes into enemy fire.

"When you think about the young men who were tasked with that during the war, and the young men and women who actually built those airplanes in Wichita and other places to make that war effort happen, it just takes you back and takes you down a peg," he said. "It's almost surreal to get to fly in something like that."

Gates at Great Bend Airfest open at 9 a.m. this Friday with the airshow beginning at 11:30 a.m. Gates open at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's Twilight Airshow begins at 7:30 p.m. with the Night Airshow to begin at 9 p.m.

Younkin bringing 'Magic by Moonlight' to this weekend's Great Bend Airfest

The roof on Hoisington's Roosevelt Elementary School needs replaced. Superintendent Patrick Crowdis is searching for ways to complete the work in a way the best benefits the district. Monday night, he informed the USD 431 Board of Education he was beginning talks with Illinois-based GRP Wegman about the possible installation of solar panels.

"GRP comes out and does a detailed analysis of the district, our electrical rates, and whether or not this would be beneficial to the district to even explore," he said. "After they do that, they then start the process of coming and communicating with the board in a more detailed way."

Crowdis said GRP Wegman has worked with Greenbush over the past 12 months. Greenbush is a service center used by school districts for professional development and cooperative purchasing agreements. At this time, USD 431 would not have to pay any money to GRP Wegman for any studies.

"No money comes out of the district until they flip the switch and the solar array becomes active," said Crowdis. "That is one of the things Greenbush emphasized. They wanted to take the risk off the district."

Crowdis said GRP's current model is to put solar arrays on a roof. By tying in a solar project with the roof replacement, the district may be able to access federal grant funds and save money from electricity generated by the panels. Monday's agenda item did not require action from the board, and Crowdis will continue to update the board as the project progresses.

USD 431 considering solar array with replacement of elementary roof

PRATT COUNTY –Authorities are investigating a fatal fire in Pratt.

Just before 8:30a.m. Monday, fire crews responded to a duplex fire at 601 N. Oak Street in Pratt, according to a media release. 

The Kansas State Fire Marshal (KSFM) Investigation Division was called to assist in the investigations of the fire.

Investigators determined the fire originated and contained to the kitchen with smoke damage throughout. The structure is a duplex with the other half suffering light smoke damage. The occupants of the other side of the duplex were able to escape safely without injury.

The victim is identified as Marjorie Meis, 67, the sole occupant. A pet dog also perished in the fire. The fire is still under investigation pending autopsy results.

Street work to begin in Great Bend at Warner & Bradley

U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall, on a weekend visit to his hometown of Great Bend, visited Fuller Industries Monday between touring Advancing Barton County Childcare’s new Bright Beginnings daycare facility and meeting with supporters before leaving town later in the day. Fuller General Manager Joe Mann gave the senator a brief tour of the massive plant and talked about the progress.

“I’m proud of what you’ve accomplished out here. Congratulations,” Marshall said, noting he has watched the company through the years. “This is the first time I’ve been here in 20 years that I am more optimistic as I leave than I was when I arrived.”

Marshall also noted the importance of manufacturers like Fuller to the local, state and national economies. Progress is the key to maintaining that edge.

“Technology is the key,” he said. This is what is going to allow companies like Fuller to compete.

Indeed, said Mann. Fuller is pushing its innovations in the water-soluble detergent delivery system (monopods) and adding new robotic production methods.

In addition, by November, the facility will have finished integrating the operations of a sister plant in Canada into the Great Bend location.

Mann and Marshall also touched on the challenge of finding labor, and other issues facing industry like the high cost of energy and consolidation in an ever-shifting business landscape.

“We have found our niche,” Mann said as he walked with Marshall through the plant. Fuller was already headed in this direction when Toronto, Canada-based GDI purchased the firm in 2021 and now this growth is accelerating.

By the time he arrived in town Monday, Marshall said he had already attended a business roundtable discussion in Ellsworth. He said the problems faced by Fuller are faced by business owners he spoke with during that meeting.

“We appreciate the senator for taking time from his schedule to visit our facility,” Mann said. “There are many big issues on the national level that impact companies like ours here in Central Kansas, and it is reassuring to know that our elected leaders in Washington, D.C., have our backs.”

Senator Marshall makes visits Monday in Great Bend

Barton County received an unexpected Christmas gift five years ago when Lindsey Creamer was hired as a shared clerk for county offices. At Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting, Creamer was honored with the Employee Recognition Award for the second quarter of 2024. Judith Castro with the county's Employee Engagement Committee read the nomination.

"Lindsey was phenomenal during the move to the Penney's building; not only our office but others, too," Castro read. "She was willing to help with anything and put her all into it. She is someone who is flexible and can jump from department to department, filling in where needed."

Creamer was hired by the county on Dec. 23, 2019. Commission Chair Barb Esfeld said the position can be daunting as it requires knowledge of various departments. Commissioner Donna Zimmerman, a long-time county clerk, seconded that opinion.

"I, luckily, got to work with her from day one when she came to work for Barton County," Zimmerman said. "She's such a quick learner. Oftentimes, you're just grabbing her and taking her from here to there and she's never, ever complained that I've known of.  She's always so willing to go above and beyond."

Bev Schmeidler, current county clerk, called Creamer a hard worker who picks up on tasks very quickly. County Administrator Matt Patnzer reiterated Creamer's value to county operations.

"She has a great attitude and she's great to be around," he said. "Because she has so much exposure to other offices, she has a lot of knowledge. She's very valuable to us."

As Employee of the Quarter, Creamer received a certificate and an additional eight hours of paid leave this year.

At Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting, Creamer was honored with the Employee Recognition Award for the second quarter of 2024. Judith Castro with the county's Employee Engagement Committee read the nomination."Lindsey was phenomenal during the move to the Penney's building; not only our office but others, too," Castro read. "She was willing to help with anything and put her all into it. As the population of those 65 and older grows, the proportion of Americans with dementia will rise. Currently, it is estimated that 6.9 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s dementia. Close family and friends tend to provide caregiving services for loved ones with the disease, and it is no easy task. In fact, those caring for a person with dementia provide extensive assistance including personal care, increased supervision, and response to behavioral symptoms.

This is why respite care, or rest for the caregiver, is vital. If you or someone you know could benefit from respite care, look to community resources for assistance.

A Different Mindset Association, located in Hays, Kansas, aims to support caregivers, provide education, network resources, and promote awareness about dementia. The group hosts caregiver support group meetings in person and via Zoom. They also provide a monthly mobile respite care service and a social engagement day program for those with dementia.

Mobile respite, “On the Road Again,” occurs the first Tuesday of every month at the Hays Senior Center. Caregivers have the opportunity to drop loved ones off to enjoy lunch, field trips, community service opportunities, and indoor and outdoor experiences.

“Our Club,” is a day program from 11 am- 3:30 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Participants can enjoy lunch, art, drama, music, intergenerational activities, community service, and animal friends at the Hays Senior Center.

Through these programs, A Different Mindset Association hopes to relieve caregivers and enrich the lives of those with dementia through social connections, recreation, and a newfound purpose.

Everyone needs a break to rest and recharge. Respite care can provide temporary relief from caregiving, while the person with dementia continues to receive care in a safe environment. Using respite services can strengthen your ability to provide the best care possible.

WINKEL: Respite services near you

Rosewood Rodeo turns 20 next month! The annual equine-therapy rodeo will take place Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Barton County Fair Grounds Expo III Arena, located two miles west on 10th and Patton Road, Great Bend.

The event, which showcases horse riding abilities of people with developmental disabilities, originated in the fall of 2005 at the Indoor Riding Arena at Rosewood Ranch. Several years later, the event was moved to Expo III Arena, to accommodate the increased number of riders, family, employees and other spectators who traditionally participate in daylong fun activities.

During Rosewood Rodeo, the public is invited to come out and experience family-friendly fall fun. There is no admission charge.

The annual rodeo has grown into one of the most important days of the year for equine-therapy riders from Rosewood Services, who practice their riding skills at Rosewood Ranch on a weekly basis throughout the year. Rosewood Ranch is a full-working horse ranch near Pawnee Rock, where people with developmental disabilities learn to ride and care for approximately 75 horses.

“We’re very excited to be celebrating 20 years of Rodeo with our riders, families, friends and our community,” said Rosewood Services CEO Tammy Hammond. “The Rodeo’s longevity speaks to the success of our horse therapy program and to the commitment of the program by our highly-trained therapy staff, our riders, and their families. I am proud to say that the Rosewood Rodeo is two decades strong. What an amazing accomplishment for everyone involved.”

Rodeo-day fun includes children’s activities and games, a photo booth, and face painting. It’s a come-and-go event for spectators, so people can choose the times they wish to attend. Reasonably priced Chuck Wagon Concessions are also available, which includes a pulled pork lunch.

In between the day’s rodeo events, there are two performances by the all-female “The American Dream” horse riding drill team. “The American Dream” will perform at 10:30 a.m. and again at 2 p.m., featuring different programs during each performance&nbsp;(All performance times are approximate.)

The 20th Annual Rosewood Rodeo’s grand entry and flag ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Then, throughout the day, therapeutic rodeo events will be held for Rosewood Services riders, including an event for children riders, followed by the award ceremony at approximately 3:30 p.m.

During the rodeo, the public can participate in a&nbsp;silent auction, where they can expect to find excellent deals on merchandise, with all bids closing at 3 p.m.&nbsp; Proceeds from the auction go to Rosewood’s non-profit Roots &amp; Wings Foundation. The foundation provides therapeutic, medical, educational and recreational opportunities to people in need, who have developmental disabilities.

Plan to attend any or all of the day’s events while browsing tack-shop merchandise, which will be available throughout the day.
