“Local farmer-owners of Kansas cooperatives are the backbone of the Wheat State,” said Russell Plaschka, president and CEO of the Kansas Cooperative Council, the organization that has represented the cooperative business model in the Sunflower State since 1944. “When we talk about a circular economy, cooperatives exemplify this through the cooperative principle of concern for community. The majority of the dollars generated from wheat and other commodities typically stay local, supporting local economies and helping sustain our rural communities into the future.”

The Kansas Cooperative Council represents cooperatives across all sectors, including agriculture, finance, utilities, housing and more. The organization provides education, advocacy and public outreach to promote the cooperative business model and strengthen the network of member-owned organizations throughout Kansas.

Cooperatives play a vital role in Kansas communities, employing more than 5,000 people across 575 locations statewide and serving more than 100,000 members. Wheat Scoop: October is National Co-op Month

Highlighting the importance of recycling, the Barton County Commission on Tuesday morning adopted an updated Solid Waste Management Plan, fulfilling a state requirement from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to revise the county’s waste strategy every five years.

The plan, which now moves to the state for final approval, places a significant emphasis on recycling to extend the life of the county’s landfill, which currently has approximately 90 years of capacity remaining.

Solid Waste Director Jennifer Hamby presented the details of the updated plan following a public hearing at the Barton County Courthouse. She noted that the biggest focus of the update was the recycling section.

"The biggest focus was the recycling," Hamby said. "It needed some major updating. As far as the information, it wasn't there. So we updated the actual recycling activities, the material-recovery section, and the drop-off locations with hours of operation.

They added information about Sunflower Diversified Services and the recycling program it offers. In addition, they included details about Superior Essex, the Hoisington copper wiring maker that has, since 2014, been a zero-waste facility bringing no trash to the landfill.

Hamby stressed the importance of recycling as a way to extend the life of the landfill and lessen the need to extract new materials.

"We have about 90 years left at the landfill, so that's where we are in pretty good shape," Hamby said. "That's why recycling is so important, because you're extending the life of your landfill, plus you're lessening the need to extract new materials, which is hard on the environment."

The plan’s focus on recycling appears to already be yielding results in some communities. Hamby reported that since Stutzman’s Refuse took over the trash service for the city of Ellinwood, offering curbside recycling, the local recycling rate has increased by more than 50%, and continues to grow. 

 Commissioner Duane Reif, District 1, also noted the ease of recycling. "I’ve got two dumpsters, and it seems like the recycling dumpster fills up faster than the trash," he said, adding he believes the effort is "really a good thing" for saving the landfill.

During the discussion, Hamby identified the top three wastes brought to the landfill as food waste, plastics, and paper and cardboard. She noted that most of the waste in those categories could be recycled or composted.

Following the presentation, the commission voted to formally adopt the new plan.

The plan covers a broad range of solid wastes, including hazardous, residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural wastes, and addresses source reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, collection, transportation, storage, processing and disposal of all solid waste.

A sure bet with so much demand that Allie Cartwright cannot
fill it alone. And yet, her Freaking Delicious Cheesecake Company continues to
grow. Thursday night, Cartwright won $50,000 to spend on her cheesecake company
as the grand-prize winner at the fourth IGNITE Rural Business Competition,
hosted by Great Bend Economic Development, at the Crest Theatre in downtown
Great Bend.

“The more we grow this brand, the more people are going to
want to come and see where the cheesecakes are made,” Cartwright told judges
Chad Somers, Sara Bloom, and Mike Johnson. “They’re going to want to come to
Great Bend and experience it. I’m so beyond excited about that idea. I love how
much joy my product brings to people.”

The fourth IGNITE Rural Business Competition began in July
with 17 original competitors. That field was whittled down to five finalists
for Thursday’s big finale. Each of the five finalists had 10 minutes to present
their business plan to the panel of judges, then eight minutes to answer
questions in the “Shark Tank” style competition.

Freaking Delicious Cheesecake Company has exploded in
popularity over the last few years, but Cartwright said it all began by
accident.

“What happened was, in April 2022, my dog needed emergency
surgery, and we were really broke,” she said. “I went on Facebook and posted a
cheesecake fundraiser, asking people if they would buy cheesecake in exchange for
helping with his surgery. It went insane. People bought tons of cheesecake from
me, shared it with their friends, family, coworkers.”

The ripple effect was on. Cartwright thought about doing
weekend pop-up events but learned making and selling food out of her own home
was illegal. Complete strangers continued to ask for her cheesecakes daily for
months. In February 2023, she officially opened Freaking Delicious Cheesecake Company with an agreement from Wolf Hotel in Ellinwood to use its commercial kitchen.

Even with no marketing and no staff, word continued to
spread about the cheesecakes. Cartwright purchased an SUV and concession
trailer for delivery and wholesale options. By the end of 2024, she had nearly
doubled her sales from 2023. Just midway through 2025, her sales surpassed
those from the year before.

“I could have done a lot more than that if I didn’t have
massive space issues,” she said. “I have almost no storage at all at the hotel.”

Cartwright nearly purchased a storefront in Great Bend but
is reconsidering the idea. She told the judges Thursday that she could use the
$50,000 grand prize to look for a new location and purchase new equipment. She
wants to become employee-focused, paying a livable wage for an employee who feels
good about working hard for a company that works hard for them. For Cartwright,
it’s even bigger than that.

“We are so excited for everything we can bring to this community,”
she said. “I tell people all the time that one of my favorite things about owning
a small business is how much it has allowed me to participate in community fundraising.
I might not have $300 in my pocket to throw at an organization, but I can make them
a show-stopping cheesecake that earns them $300 in an auction. That feels
really good.”

Cartwright said her company already has name recognition
statewide. With the grand-prize money earned Thursday, she wants to grow
Freaking Delicious Cheesecake even further.

A total of $95,000 was handed out during Thursday’s IGNITE
finale. Coach K9 Training Academy, owned by Brooke Schmidt and April Steinert,
won $30,000 as the second-place finisher. Tankquility Aquariums, owned by Brad
Franshier, won $10,000 as the third-place finisher. Fanshier also won $5,000 as
the People’s Choice winner.

Brennan Mills is not just a second-year graduate student pursuing his master’s in English online; he is a rising star in the Kansas City educational community. Brennan is currently teaching middle school English at Indian Woods Middle School in the Shawnee Mission School District, where he has made an indelible mark on his students and peers alike.

Having completed his undergraduate degree in May of 2022, he immersed himself in the joys of teaching. Brennan quickly fell in love with his role as an educator. “After the first week, I knew I was in the right spot. I had a great first year, and I was folded into a band of experienced teachers who were outstanding at their jobs,” he recalls. 

That first year was not just about teaching; it was a foundation built on collaboration. His passionate approach to English Education was quickly recognized, and his school nominated Brennan for the prestigious Kansas Horizon Award. This award recognizes promising first-year educators across the state, providing them with a platform to shine.

Brennan's thoughtful and innovative methodologies caught the eye of his principal, Lacy Warren, who praised him for his commitment to fostering connections with students and their families. His weekly communication with parents ensures they stay informed about their children's progress and learning, bridging the gap between home and school. “Mr. Mills goes above and beyond to communicate with families,” said Principal Warren. For Brennan, teaching is more than a job; it's about respect, understanding, and building a strong foundation for each student.

Following the recognition by his district, Brennan's accolades continued to grow. He triumphantly advanced through the congressional district and state levels, ultimately being celebrated at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) conference. Reflecting on his accomplishments, he shares humbly, “Award or no award, I would have kept doing exactly what I did, but it’s nice to be recognized.”

Brennan’s dedication to education didn’t stem solely from his classroom experiences; it also flourished from his adventures abroad. During the summer of 2025, he embarked on a transformative journey to Alnwick Castle in England as part of a study abroad program.

FHSU Alnwick is a 3-week, on-site, short-term faculty-led study abroad program located at Alnwick Castle in Alnwick, England, Northumberland. Open to all FHSU undergraduate and graduate students with any major, the program includes a 4-week online summer course with the latter 3 weeks taught onsite at Alnwick Castle.

Home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, Alnwick Castle is steeped in history and significance. Built after the Norman conquest, the castle has undergone extensive renovations to accommodate educational residency programs while preserving its historical integrity. 

Renowned for its appearances in beloved films such as Harry Potter, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Transformers: The Last Knight, the castle also offers visitors a chance to engage in activities like medieval craft demonstrations, Harry Potter broomstick flying lessons, and archery lessons.

Encouraged by FHSU professor Dr. Perry Harrison, Brennan enrolled in two memorable courses: “Outlaws through the Ages” and a travel writing course led by Lisa Bell, director of our writing center and instructor of English and Modern Languages. The latter was a significant challenge as he ventured outside his usual writing style. “It was a refreshing challenge and an informative dive into a new genre,” he remarked. 

Alongside his wife, Brennan spent three weeks exploring the depths of English culture and heritage, traveling from the historic Stonehenge to the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland.

As he balances his responsibilities as a full-time educator and a student, Brennan appreciates the support from Fort Hays State University. He focuses on old British literature and has taken several courses with Perry Harrison. He has also enjoyed his courses with Dr. Leuschner and Lisa Bell. “It has been rigorous but also par for the course. Having a full-time job, teaching from 8 to 4, and then coming home and working on graduate coursework. The professors have been super accommodating.”

His students are fortunate to have a dedicated teacher who enjoys engaging in discussions. Brennan introduces “Philosophy Fridays” in his 8th-grade English class, where students tackle big ideas through the lens of classical philosophers like Plato. “It’s a highlight of my week. It’s a way to engage with students on a deeper level,” he explains. He believes that middle schoolers possess incredible potential and curiosity, making them uniquely suited for exploring life’s profound questions.

Brennan Mills stands out as a dedicated educator and an inspirational figure for future teachers. With aspirations to continue teaching middle school English, he emphasizes the importance of the journey. “They are on the brink of everything, and the possibilities are limitless,” he says about his students. As he forges ahead in his career and studies, this remarkable educator's future clearly holds great promise.

Car seat checks and Imagination Playground coming to Great Bend Rec Oct. 15

I love to cook but some weeks it is overwhelming to put together nutritious meals; and it’s just my husband and I these days! An article from K-State Extension shares how meal prepping can be a valuable tool to save time, reduce food waste, and meet nutritional goals. It is, however, about finding a system that works for your lifestyle.

Chelsea King, a nutrition, food safety and health agent with K-State Extension’s office in Johnson County, says successful meal prepping starts with a solid plan.

“Often, people feel overwhelmed because they try to create brand-new meals every time they cook,” King said. “Instead, start with go-to recipes that you and your family already enjoy. Once you have those, it becomes easier to build a meal plan around them.”

King encourages home cooks to try one new recipe each week to gradually expand their menus. And don't forget to plan for snacks.

“Snacks are one of those things that are easy to overlook,” she said. “It’s tempting to grab a bag of chips, but with a little prep, you can have nutritious options like energy bites or cut-up fruits and vegetables ready to go.”

Before heading to the grocery store, King suggests checking your pantry, refrigerator and freezer.

“One of the biggest money wasters is buying items you already have,” she said. “Taking inventory before you shop not only saves money, it helps reduce food waste.”

King also recommends eating seasonally. “Seasonal produce is often more nutritious and flavorful,” she said. “It’s usually harvested at its peak and may have been picked just a day or two before you buy it at the farmers market.”

Batch cooking is another time-saver. “If you're making rice, cook extra,” she said. “Roast more vegetables than you need for one meal, and use the leftovers in salads or breakfasts. It saves both time and energy.”

While meal prepping often conjures images of spending an entire Sunday cooking, King says it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

“If one big prep day doesn’t work for you, break it into smaller sessions during the week,” she said. “Do what fits your schedule, whether that’s prepping every few days or just washing and chopping produce ahead of time.”

Food safety is a key part of any meal prep plan. King emphasizes the importance of clean workspaces, proper handwashing and using food-safe containers, especially for freezing meals.

“Don’t use old yogurt containers for freezer storage — they’re not designed for those temperatures,” she said. “Use freezer-safe containers and always label and date what you store.”

Meal prepping also helps in those inevitable life moments — a late meeting, traffic delay, or a sick child.

“Having emergency meals in the freezer keeps you from relying on expensive fast food,” King said. “It helps you stick to your nutrition goals and saves money.”

“Meal-prepping isn’t a one-size-fits all,” she adds. “Find what works best for you and your family. Start small and focus on preparing meals for one or two days, then add more based on your comfort and needs.”

“The overall goal of meal prepping is to be more efficient in the kitchen, meaning less time spent in the kitchen, and to have nutritious homemade meals all week long.”

BERAN: Meal-prepping a way to eat healthier and save money

The University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend welcomes Jessica Pries, MD, a board-certified general surgeon, to the care team at Great Bend Campus.

Dr. Pries grew up in central Kansas and she is glad to be back in the area and serving patients here. She was part of the Scholars in Rural Health program at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in cell biology. As a student who successfully completed the Scholars in Rural Health program, Dr. Pries was assured entrance to the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

“It is a real privilege to serve patients in the area where I grew up,” she said. “I enjoy offering patients a solution to their problem so they can get back to their daily life as quickly as possible.”

Dr. Pries has advanced training in minimally invasive surgery techniques as well as a special interest in hernia repairs and treating gallbladder disease. When not working, she enjoys traveling. She lives in the area with her husband and their animals.

Dr. Pries earned her medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita. She completed her general surgery residency at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans and a bariatric surgery fellowship at University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.

General surgeon joins The University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend

The Barton County Commission on Tuesday leveraged its regular meeting to highlight an extraordinary 12-hour slate of community activities, which commissioners framed as a necessary demonstration of public service and accountability.

Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson, District 3, announced that the commission and its administrative staff would collectively put in 120 work hours during the day, covering multiple events without adding "one extra dollar" to the budget.

"Today is one of the proudest days I've had as a commissioner, and it's thanks to the people sitting to the left and the people sitting to the right of me," Hutchinson said. "Not one person on this team said, 'No.' Everyone here... said, 'Yes, we'll step up. We're going to put in a 12-hour day today.'"

The ambitious schedule began with the formal meeting, followed by the County Employee Picnic in Jack Kilby Square. In the morning, the commission planned to discuss a housing project in Hoisington before continuing its "Travel 389" initiative in the afternoon with visits to Great Bend businesses, including KanEquip, Queen Bees Nutrition, Beauty Bar and Kansas Pro Wash, Mark's Custom Signs, and Central Plains Security.

The day concluded with commissioners attending the League of Women Voters Candidates Forum Tuesday evening at the Great Bend Event Center.

Hutchinson used the commission’s commitment as a benchmark for all elected officials.

"I think that this should be more the rule, instead of the exception, with elected officials talking from the president all the way down to the township officials," he said.

He issued a call to action for the public.

"If your elected officials aren't doing this sort of thing and they're not putting in 12-hour days when they're needed to, fire them, elect new people," Hutchinson said. "The people that are voting are in charge, and (all elected officials) should be held to the same level of accountability."

Commissioner Duane Reif, District 1, agreed, adding that the effort is simply part of the job.

"We’re not just patting ourselves on the back. We're just doing what we're supposed to do," Reif said, emphasizing the importance of the evening forum. "It's your chance to get out and know the candidate that you're voting for."

Commissioner Barb Esfeld, District 2, echoed those sentiments. She added that, for example, the Commission spent countless hours crafting a balanced 2026 budget that remained below revenue neutral. The hours and the effort put into the process created a budget that the Commissioners were proud to adopt.

"How sad that people out there just really don't even know what we do," Esfeld said. "This commission will tell you we spend hours working on our budget."

She joined her colleagues in encouraging voter participation. She noted that the forum was the perfect example of an opportunity for residents to get involved.

City of Great Bend releases Home for the Holidays theme and details

One week into the ongoing federal government shutdown, Kansas officials are detailing how services for veterans are being affected across the state.

Bill Turner, Director of the Kansas Department of Veteran Services, confirms that while several federal-level programs are temporarily halted, all state-managed veteran services remain fully operational. That includes the state’s veteran homes, cemeteries, and service representative offices.

According to the department’s website, the following federal services remain unaffected by the shutdown: •&nbsp; VA Medical Centers, Outpatient Clinics, and Vet Centers are open and providing all services. •&nbsp; VA benefits such as compensation, pension, education, and housing continue to be processed and delivered. •&nbsp; Burials at VA national cemeteries and applications for markers and headstones will continue. •&nbsp; The Board of Veterans’ Appeals is still issuing decisions. •&nbsp; Call centers, including the Veterans Crisis Line, remain open 24/7. •&nbsp; Suicide prevention programs, homelessness services, and caregiver support are ongoing.

However, other federal programs and operations have been suspended until the shutdown ends, including: •&nbsp; Transition assistance and career counseling services for veterans. •&nbsp; VA regional offices and some call centers, including GI Bill and National&nbsp; Cemetery hotlines. •&nbsp; Public Affairs and unfunded outreach, such as press responses and Vet Resources emails. •&nbsp; Grounds maintenance and headstone placement at VA cemeteries. •&nbsp; Applications for pre-need burial and new Presidential Memorial Certificates. •&nbsp; Outreach to local, tribal, and community partners by VA Central Office.

Eric Rohleder, Deputy Director of the Kansas Office of Veteran Services, said his office has received calls from concerned veterans but assured that Kansas’ state-level operations remain stable.

Congress continues to debate a government spending bill that would end the shutdown and restore full operations to affected federal agencies.

Govt. shutdown impacts some Veteran services

Several local candidates attended the first of two forums hosted by the League of Women Voters Tuesday night at the Great Bend Events Center. The forum allowed candidates to prepare answers to two questions related to why they are running for their specific elected office. Current Great Bend City Council members Davis Jimenez and Alan Moeder are both running for mayor. Jimenez answered the first question pertaining to city trends he is most proud of and most worried about over the last 3-5 years.

"The trend I'm most proud of in Great Bend over the last few years is how our small-town way of living continues to shine," he said. "People still know their neighbors, support local businesses, and take pride in their community. The sense of belonging and connection is something you can't find in a bigger city, and that's what makes Great Bend special. 

"The trend I find most worrisome is population loss and keeping our young people here. We need more jobs, housing, and opportunities so families and young professionals can see a future in Great Bend. If we don't address it, it affects our schools, our workforce, and long-term strength of our community. By focusing on transparency, communication, and community involvement, we can serve the best parts of small-town life while tackling the challenges ahead."

Jimenez said he is proud to call Great Bend home, even after multiple deployments overseas. His only agenda in serving on the council and running for mayor is to make Great Bend better so kids want to stay home or return after college. He also wants to build a relationship with the county so the two entities can continue to work side-by-side.

Moeder has called Great Bend home for more than 66 years. A Great Bend High School and Barton Community College graduate, he started his own plumbing business in 1982. More than 40 years later, he is still the owner and operator of that business. He has volunteered for Columbus Club, Relay for Life, was a Boy Scouts leader, and serves on the Roots and Wings Foundation Board. His first question related to initiatives he would pursue, how he would implement the initiatives, and how he would collaborate with the city council and public to accomplish those goals.

"As mayor, you have certain jobs," he said. "One of them is running the meeting, overseeing what goes on on the agenda, and trying to run a meeting that's quick, honest, and fair. The mayor does not promote anything. The only time the mayor votes is when there's a tie. He is there to give them information, to teach them what the opportunities are, and which direction to go. But at the end, it's not the mayor who makes the decision, it's the eight council members. That's the way government should work. The mayor is not there to influence anybody."
