Commonly known as “The Big First,” Kansas’s 1st congressional
district includes a pair of challengers to two-time incumbent Tracey Mann.
Democrat Paul Buskirk and Republican Eric Bloom are the two challengers and
both showed up to the candidate forum last week in Great Bend hosted by the
League of Women Voters. 

Buskirk, from Lawrence, felt strongly about the
strengthening Medicare.


"Medicare is not stable past 2036," said Buskirk. "Our stewards of social security and Medicare tell us that the money will run out for social security, to make full payments, in 2035. I believe our current folks in Washington apparently don't think that's a priority or they think it's so far away that we don't have to worry about it."

Bloom, also from Lawrence, recognized his campaign funding is different from
former Lieutenant Governor Tracey Mann.


"I can tell you the only bank account I have for this is my wife and my back account," said Bloom. "I haven't taken a single dollar and I don't plan on it. It probably means in our government, you have zero chance. I was still able to put my money down, drive across the state a couple different times and it's because I believe in democracy. You never what might just happen. I might be able to overcome a hill of money."

“Are you better off than you were four years ago?”

It is no secret that President Biden is unpopular.&nbsp; In the 2023&nbsp;Kansas Speaks&nbsp;poll, a whopping 62.8% of respondents were dissatisfied with Biden’s performance, versus 32.9% who were dissatisfied with fellow Democrat, Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp; Widespread approval of Biden’s withdrawal is one of the few issues these days that bring Democrats, Republicans and independents together.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The focus on Biden’s withdrawal centered on his age and his poor performance in the first Presidential debate–both legitimate concerns.&nbsp; Yet another issue lurks.&nbsp; By many measures, Biden’s presidency has been highly successful, characterized by a recovery from the COVID pandemic, a strong economy, falling violent crime rates, decreased poverty, and policies that have advanced the transition to domestically-produced clean energy and begun rebuilding the country’s decrepit infrastructure.&nbsp; One Biden policy even accomplished something no other President ever has–<a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/09/12/biden-child-tax-credit-poverty-doubled/">cutting the child poverty rate in half</a>, to an all-time low.&nbsp; Congress did not renew the program.

Despite this, many voters&nbsp;perceive&nbsp;the country as doing poorly.&nbsp; In the first debate, former President Trump suggested that the country is worse off today than in the last year of his Administration.&nbsp; The year 2020 was so infamous that one TV commercial portrayed it as being in love with the Devil himself.&nbsp; It was the beginning and second-deadliest year of the COVID pandemic, which ultimately killed over a million Americans and tanked the economy.&nbsp; The murder of George Floyd triggered protests over police brutality throughout the nation– most were peaceful, but some turned deadly.&nbsp; Finally, Trump’s term culminated with the events of January 6, 2021.&nbsp; Yet Trump has no trouble claiming that the country is worse off today–and many Americans seem to agree.&nbsp; Why?

Except for his own approval ratings, most numbers look very strong for Biden’s legacy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/fbi-data-shows-that-violent-crimes-in-the-u-s-decreased-in-2023">Violent crime is decreasing</a>, and remains&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2022/10/31/violent-crime-is-a-key-midterm-voting-issue-but-what-does-the-data-say/#:~:text=In%202021%2C%20the%20most%20recent,the%20National%20Crime%20Victimization%20Survey.">far below the levels of the mid-1960s to mid-1990s</a>. Unemployment dropped dramatically after the pandemic, and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/charts/employment-situation/civilian-unemployment-rate.htm">remains at low levels</a>.&nbsp; The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.officialdata.org/us/stocks/s-p-500/2020#:~:text=Stock%20market%20returns%20since%202020&amp;text=This%20is%20a%20return%20on,%2C%20or%209.34%25%20per%20year.">stock market&nbsp;</a>is doing well. After a spike in 2021-22 ,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-inflation-rates/">inflation has been stabilized</a>.&nbsp; This requires high interest rates, but the Federal Reserve predicts&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/fed-near-interest-rate-cut-d303dbd5">these can start coming down&nbsp;</a>by the end of the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Even issues important to&nbsp;Republicans&nbsp;look good for Biden.&nbsp; For example, recently, unauthorized crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border have&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/07/16/texas-border-migrant-apprehensions-decrease/">declined steeply</a>, and there haven’t been any violent antifa or Black Lives Matter protests in years.

Despite all the good news,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/08/politics/biden-polling-independents/index.html">independent voters</a>&nbsp;perceive the country to be in trouble under Biden. &nbsp; One possible culprit is our long break from high inflation between the early 1980s and 2021.&nbsp; Older Americans have forgotten–and younger Americans never knew–that controlling inflation means slowing down the&nbsp;increase&nbsp;in prices, not reversing costs to those of previous years.&nbsp; The latter would require nothing less than deliberately sending the country into economic decline.&nbsp; Price increases are under control, but costs are not going back to pre-2021 levels. The economic toll of doing so would be far too high.

The nation also continues to struggle with major social challenges, including homelessness, exorbitant housing costs, and fentanyl addiction, all of which we see and feel here in Kansas. They need ongoing, thoughtful attention from policymakers. Blaming them on immigrants is neither accurate nor helpful.

Whatever the causes of today’s public opinion, Biden’s legacy and Vice President Harris’ candidacy both depend in large part on how Americans perceive the current state of the nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

INSIGHT KANSAS: Back to 2020?

The Barton Dance Department, in partnership with Aly’s Dance Studio and Be Studios, is holding three “Ballet Master Class” sessions in August for dance students ages 10-18. &nbsp;

The first Master Class will be taught by Artistic Director of Ballet Salina Mara Klenda from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 8 in Studio 34 on the Barton campus. The second Master Class will be taught by Barton Dance Program Director Danika Bielek from 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 10 in Studio 34 on the Barton campus, and the final class will be taught by Cecchetti Ballet Instructor Kelley Scott from 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 17 at Aly’s Dance Studio, 1701 K96 Highway, in Great Bend.

Each class will be taught by different instructors who are ballet experts and will focus on the specific artistry and qualities that define ballet. Dances and music from the “Nutcracker” ballet will be featured to promote the upcoming production of “A Nutcracker for the Golden Belt,” which will take place Nov. 21-24. For dancers interested in being part of the production, these classes can help prepare them for the upcoming auditions.

Auditions will be held from 10-11 a.m. for ages 7-11 and 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. for ages 12 and up on Aug. 31. Callbacks will be at 2 p.m. that day.

Barton Dance Department to host Ballet Master Class

Michael EG Reynolds, 68, of Larned, appeared in custody in the Pawnee County District Court Wednesday morning for a scheduled evidentiary Preliminary Hearing.

Prior to the commencement of the hearing, District Magistrate Judge Keaton Gleason took up written correspondence by the defendant to the Court regarding Reynold’s appointed counsel.  After consultation with the parties, Judge Gleason granted defense counsel’s request to withdraw.  The Court then advised the parties the Preliminary Hearing will be re-scheduled once new counsel is appointed and had an opportunity to review the case file.

Reynolds is charged with one count of Intentional Murder in the Second Degree, one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Firearm. The charges stem from a joint investigation by the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and Coroner Dr. Lyle Noordhoek into the shooting death of Dr. Tomas Garza, 52, of Larned, on March 30, 2024. The investigation is ongoing.

The defendant is being held in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff with bond set at $250,000 cash or surety.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Each year the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) requests a Congressional Proclamation to declare August as National Breastfeeding Month in the United States. In 2021, the USBC piloted a toolkit that individuals could use to urge their governor to proclaim August as "Breastfeeding Month" in their state or territory. Kansas has joined the list! Governor Kelly signed the proclamation for Kansas on July 29, 2024. The theme this year is “Nourish, Sustain, Thrive”

Most of us have heard about how breastfeeding positively affects the health of infants and toddlers. Breastfeeding also positively impacts families financially as well as the environment. However, many have not heard about the positive impacts on a mother’s health. Women who breastfeed their children lower their risk of breast cancer. According to an epidemiological study published in the The Lancet, breastfeeding is dose specific. For every 12 months of breastfeeding, the risk of breast cancer goes down by 4.3%. This can be for one child or a combination of children. Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes as reported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Finally, studies also show that breastfeeding can help lower the risk of osteoporosis and stroke. That is a lot of health benefits that make for healthier women and society. And those are only the physical health benefits. There are also social-emotional benefits as well that help with bonding and parenting.

Just because a woman wants to breastfeed though doesn’t mean that she has the support to do so. While breastfeeding is natural, it isn’t always easy. The World Breastfeeding Week campaign this year focuses on survival, health and wellbeing. It will showcase the need to improve breastfeeding support to reduce inequalities that exist in our society with a special focus on breastfeeding in times of emergencies and crisis. A mother who is breastfeeding can continue to feed her baby without the need for clean water, formula or a way to boil water. Feeding her baby is one less thing to think about during an emergency or crisis.

Join us to celebrate mothers and to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding and human milk feeding for the 14th annual National Breastfeeding Month. In Hays and Ellis County, La Leche League of the Western Plains and the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition will hold a celebration on August 14th, 2024 at 10 am during our regularly scheduled La Leche League meeting. Come see what in-person support is all about and help us celebrate breastfeeding in Ellis County. Refreshments will be served.

Breastfeeding also positively impacts families financially as well as the environment. However, many have not heard about the positive impacts on a mother’s health. Women who breastfeed their children lower their risk of breast cancer. According to an epidemiological study published in the The Lancet, breastfeeding is dose specific. For every 12 months of breastfeeding, the risk of breast cancer goes down by 4.3%. This can be for one child or a combination of children. Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes as reported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Finally, studies also show that breastfeeding can help lower the risk of osteoporosis and stroke. That is a lot of health benefits that make for healthier women and society. And those are only the physical health benefits. There are also social-emotional benefits as well that help with bonding and parenting.Just because a woman wants to breastfeed though doesn’t mean that she has the support to do so. While breastfeeding is natural, it isn’t always easy. The World Breastfeeding Week campaign this year focuses on survival, health and wellbeing. It will showcase the need to improve breastfeeding support to reduce inequalities that exist in our society with a special focus on breastfeeding in times of emergencies and crisis. A mother who is breastfeeding can continue to feed her baby without the need for clean water, formula or a way to boil water. Great Bend's downtown music store almost made it to its teen years. Dan Heath and Brian Bellendir opened A440 Musical Instruments, now at 1207 Main Street, in October 2011. The doors officially close for business this Friday, but Heath said past employees and the public are invited to a special Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, Aug. 10, beginning at noon.

"Hopefully, folks will just show up to play guitar or sing a bit," he said. "We're going to have refreshments and door prizes and just say 'thank you' to the people who have kept us going for 13 years and 'goodbye.'"

The move to close the business has not been an easy one, but Heath called it a necessary one after longtime manager Lyle Jones moved out of the area.

"He'd been the manager here for six years, and he ran the show," Heath said. "Brian and I are just not really wanting to do it. Finding somebody that's young and energetic and knows music, people, retail, and repairs, that person just doesn't exist. We were lucky to have him but he has moved on to greener pastures."

Heath said some people his age will simply buy a Corvette during their mid-life crisis. For him, it was opening a music store. He and Bellendir&nbsp; played in a band together, and Bellendir saved money by learning how to repair instruments. The passion for music turned into a business.

"It's been awesome getting musicians started," said Heath. "That's been our thing is putting instruments into the hands of kids and people wanting to learn. We've been doing that for a long time. It's going to be really sad not being here, and it's going to be kind of hard on folks because now they're going to have to count on out-of-towners to take care of it. We just don't have it in us anymore. Hopefully, somebody will pick it up. It was a good business."

A440 continues to liquidate its merchandise with sales of 40-50 percent off all merchandise. The store will remain open today and Friday from noon to 5 p.m. The sale will continue on Customer Appreciation Day.

In June 2021, the Great Bend City Council approved a Common Consumption
Area downtown where alcohol could be sold and consumed outdoors. The
consumption district started on Forest Avenue, between Main and Williams, and
has been used for the Final Fridays on Forest events with live music and food.


Great Bend Alive, the downtown arm of Economic Development, is asking the
council to approve an ordinance that will expand the consumption area.
Along with alleyways, the proposed consumption area will include the portions
of Lakin Avenue and 12th Street, between Main and Williams. Spot
areas will include the parking lot to the north of Charlie’s Place and the outdoor
gathering place being constructed on the southwest corner of Forest and

Maddie Deiters is making her splash in the art world at a young age. The Illinois native has already completed nearly two dozen murals in Illinois, North Carolina, Missouri, and soon, in Montana. For the next two weeks, the 17-year-old Deiters will be battling temperatures well above the century mark in downtown Great Bend with a mural on the former NAPA building just south of the 10th and Main Street intersection.

"This is definitely the hottest outside temperature for a mural," Deiters said. "I did a mural around where I live and that was pretty hot. It melted our paint tray liners, but it was nothing like this. Normally, the hottest I've done is maybe around 90 degrees but not really above 100. This is insane."

The Great Bend Foundation applied for a Public Arts and Murals grant through the Kansas Arts Commission. The "Guardians of Great Bend" mural is fully funded via the $10,000 grant and matching contributions from sponsors.

Barry Stalcup, owner of Comfort Pro, now owns the former NAPA building. He worked with Haley Ruble with Freestyle Marketing on the project, and Ruble found some of Deiters' other work. A collaboration with the artist began.

"We talked about all the logistics from surface of the building to surface of the ground, to dimension, to color, to working with the community, etc.," said Deiters. "Everything is discussed."

An appreciation for first responders will be the main theme of the mural. Sponsorships allowed area businesses to show their support for first responders and have their logos placed on the mural. More than two dozen bricks were also purchased via individual sponsorships to highlight first responders and police K9s. Troy's Color Clinic is providing the paint for the mural, which Deiters expects to last for some time.

"Some colors will fade faster than others," she said. "Bright colors - red, orange, yellow - will start to fade in maybe about five years but they won't completely go away. The longevity can be anywhere from 15-20 years."

Like several other recent murals, Deiters works mostly via projection. She and her mother spent the first few days on the project priming the formerly NAPA-blue wall. 

"I do all my projections in different layers, so I'm out here pretty much every night in the first week," said Deiters. "I have to project the background and paint that and layer it on. I found out that makes my process much faster. It's difficult. There are lots of obstacles. It's hard to get far enough back. That has definitely been quite the logistical challenge for this piece."

Deiters began working on the mural on July 29. She expected to push through 12-18 hour work days but will rest during the peak hours of the summer heat. Already three years into her mural career, she hopes it only gets bigger after Kansas.

"I would love to start to develop my own style and travel to new and interesting places like Great Bend," she said.

Illinois teenager battling Kansas heat with next Great Bend mural

Barton County Communications provides an invaluable resource for residents in need and first responders. Tuesday morning, the Barton County Commission was able to put some value to the work. Communications Director Dena Popp approached the board to renew two contracts with Motorola Solutions totaling $99,966.

"In 2020, Communications got a SPARK (Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas) funding grant to purchase two 800 megahertz radio repeater towers," Popp said. "During that grant, the first year of maintenance, support, and additional costs were included in that. However, the future years of SPARKs funding could not be utilized for maintenance contracts."

Now entering its fourth year, the commission agreed to use the general fund to pay $64,713 for continuation of services through April 2025. 

"This contract is important to the communications center as it provides intrusion alarms, heat alarms, power outages, monthly updates to keep up with technology and software/firmware updates," said Popp. "Also, with those feeding into myself and (IT Director Dereck Hollingshead), it prevents me from having to drive to Susank on a regular basis just to check those things."

The county also agreed to pay just over $35,000 for a console upgrade at the communications center. That cost will be paid with 911 tax fee funds to avoid using property taxes. Communications is also taking early steps to replace one of its towers in Susank. Purchased by the county in 1989, Popp said the tower is showing various signs of wear and tear.

Barton Co. Communications renews Motorola contract for $100K

Candace Tomlin has had two less-than-helpful experiences with parenting classes in recent years and certainly didn’t want to try for a third.

To say that she was reluctant to sign up for Parent Project classes at Juvenile Services is an understatement.

“My lawyer suggested Parent Project and my thought was ‘are you kidding me?’” recalled Tomlin, a 36-year-old Great Bend woman. “I attended a couple of those and didn’t like either with a passion.

“But then a Juvenile Services staff member suggested it too. So, I said ‘fine, I guess I’ll go.’”

To say that she is grateful would be another understatement, she said, noting she and her daughter plan to attend the next class, which begins Tuesday, Aug. 27.

“The main thing I enjoyed was that Casey Rowland didn’t make me feel crazy or alone,” Tomlin commented, referring to the leader of Parent Project. “Every parent has these thoughts sometimes.

“The other classes I went to talked about things such as nutrition and gave advice for parents of young children. When I realized this class would be different, I could relate to Casey and my classmates. It was a safe place to talk.”

Tomlin, a single mother, has four children who range in age from 13 to 19. Her main reason for attending the classes was her daughter who was 16 at the time.

“She was sneaking out and lying repeatedly,” her mom said. “She stole her grandmother’s credit card and ran up a big bill. I got after her and threatened to call the cops. After that, she made a false report that I hit her.”

A judge recommended that mother and daughter take a break because tempers were running high. The teenager lived with her aunt for a while and is now back home.

The daughter is now 18 and pregnant, and plans to take the class to help her communicate better with her mom.

“She was improving and then she met a boy,” Tomlin said. “Now, she is back on the right track again. Parent Project is not a cure-all but it has taught me how to react better to situations.

“I am more tolerant, less aggressive and use a calmer voice. This has helped me grow and not stress out as much. I would be a hot mess without the classes; I have learned that it is okay to breathe.”

Tomlin realizes that kids are going to make mistakes “but I am here for them when they fall. Understanding that they have to make their own mistakes is extremely difficult because you want to protect them.

“But I have learned to help myself be strong so that my kids can become strong adults.”

Next class As family-engagement advocate at Juvenile Services, Casey Rowland leads Parent Project classes with the help of colleagues and other local professionals.

The next sessions begin Tuesday, Aug. 27 for eight consecutive Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Juvenile Services office, 1800 12th in Great Bend. There is no cost and dinner will be provided.

While in-person attendance is preferred, a Zoom option is available for out-of-county residents.

Participants in the upcoming classes will hear from Tomlin who plans to share what she has learned; she has addressed the class a couple of times.

“Candace talks about several issues that put newcomers at ease,” Rowland said. “She discusses how she felt in the beginning and what to expect. Candace encourages people to stick with it throughout the eight weeks, even though it can be difficult at times.”

Other guest speakers often include law-enforcement officers who share information about the harmful effects of drugs and social-media abuse, and other topics.

Juvenile Services staff members and medical professionals also address the group at times.

“This creates more diversity in our presentations and gives parents the opportunity to ask questions,” Rowland explained.

Rowland, mother of five children, also emphasized that class sessions don’t have to be a “one-and-done thing. My door is always open to parents. I am here to walk you through it, even if you haven’t taken the class.”

 </figure>Candace Tomlin has had two less-than-helpful experiences with parenting classes in recent years and certainly didn’t want to try for a third.To say that she was reluctant to sign up for Parent Project classes at Juvenile Services is an understatement.“My lawyer suggested Parent Project and my thought was ‘are you kidding me?’” recalled Tomlin, a 36-year-old Great Bend woman. “I attended a couple of those and didn’t like either with a passion.“But then a Juvenile Services staff member suggested it too. So, I said ‘fine, I guess I’ll go.’”To say that she is grateful would be another understatement, she said, noting she and her daughter plan to attend the next class, which begins Tuesday, Aug. 27.“The main thing I enjoyed was that Casey Rowland didn’t make me feel crazy or alone,” Tomlin commented, referring to the leader of Parent Project. “Every parent has these thoughts sometimes.<figure>

When I realized this class would be different, I could relate to Casey and my classmates. It was a safe place to talk.”Tomlin, a single mother, has four children who range in age from 13 to 19. Her main reason for attending the classes was her daughter who was 16 at the time.“She was sneaking out and lying repeatedly,” her mom said. “She stole her grandmother’s credit card and ran up a big bill. I got after her and threatened to call the cops. After that, she made a false report that I hit her.”A judge recommended that mother and daughter take a break because tempers were running high. The teenager lived with her aunt for a while and is now back home.The daughter is now 18 and pregnant, and plans to take the class to help her communicate better with her mom.“She was improving and then she met a boy,” Tomlin said. “Now, she is back on the right track again. Parent Project is not a cure-all but it has taught me how to react better to situations.“I am more tolerant, less aggressive and use a calmer voice. This has helped me grow and not stress out as much. I would be a hot mess without the classes; I have learned that it is okay to breathe.”Tomlin realizes that kids are going to make mistakes “but I am here for them when they fall. Understanding that they have to make their own mistakes is extremely difficult because you want to protect them.“But I have learned to help myself be strong so that my kids can become strong adults.”Next class As family-engagement advocate at Juvenile Services, Casey Rowland leads Parent Project classes with the help of colleagues and other local professionals.The next sessions begin Tuesday, Aug. 27 for eight consecutive Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Juvenile Services office, 1800 12th in Great Bend. There is no cost and dinner will be provided.While in-person attendance is preferred, a Zoom option is available for out-of-county residents.Participants in the upcoming classes will hear from Tomlin who plans to share what she has learned; she has addressed the class a couple of times.“Candace talks about several issues that put newcomers at ease,” Rowland said. “She discusses how she felt in the beginning and what to expect. Candace encourages people to stick with it throughout the eight weeks, even though it can be difficult at times.”Other guest speakers often include law-enforcement officers who share information about the harmful effects of drugs and social-media abuse, and other topics.Juvenile Services staff members and medical professionals also address the group at times.“This creates more diversity in our presentations and gives parents the opportunity to ask questions,” Rowland explained.Rowland, mother of five children, also emphasized that class sessions don’t have to be a “one-and-done thing. My door is always open to parents. The ball officially began rolling for a new Little Panthers Preschool and USD 428 District Education Center when the Great Bend district purchased the property at 1809 24th Street in September 2022. In August of last year, the board of education approved the final cost of the facility at $4.78 million. USD 428 Public Information Director Andrea Bauer said the doors officially open Thursday evening with an open house and job fair.

"From 4-6 p.m., we're going to be giving tours, we've got some refreshments, and a program planned at 5:30 where you can hear a little more about the process of how we get to today," she said. "We're going to thank some of our sponsors that sponsored classrooms as well. As a whole, we're just so excited about this new facility and what it does to serve our students and really further the educational opportunities for Great Bend kids."

The program at 5:30 p.m. will also include a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Thursday's event is not only a good chance to see the new preschool and district education center, but also to check out job openings in the district.

"As we gear up for school, of course we've got open positions to fill," said Bauer. "Some of those are supporting classroom instruction as a para or TA (teaching assistant), while others are more administrative or even working in our food service department. We feel like we've got a position for anyone who wants to have a meaningful career and impact public education."

USD 428 staff will be available to answer job-related questions and conduct preliminary on-site interviews to get the ball rolling. Little Panthers Preschool Open House, USD 428 Job Fair is Thursday

The&nbsp;Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Program&nbsp;is an educational volunteer training program sponsored by K-State Research and Extension. This program was started at Washington State University in 1972. There are now EMG programs in all 50 states. K-State Research and Extension started their EMG program in 1980. Through this program, individuals are trained and certified in horticulture and related areas. These individuals, in turn, volunteer their expertise and services to help others through horticulture projects that benefit the community.

Once trained, EMGs provide research-based information to the public on many topics including water conservation, yard waste management, regional plant adaptability, and the environment. They are also available to answer questions about problems or concerns that a homeowner may be experiencing with their gardens or landscaping.

The EMGs work with their local Extension staff to develop educational programs that meet the horticultural needs of their local citizens. Projects may include school programs, demonstration gardens, speaker's bureau and answering questions on a horticulture hotline.

Extension Master Gardeners become friends with many interesting and talented individuals. They share ideas with one another. Extension Master Gardeners never stop learning, but continue to grow in their knowledge of garden related issues.

The Cottonwood District will be hosting training for individuals interested in joining the EMP Program. Persons interested in joining the program can stop by either the Hays or Great Bend office to pick up an application. Applications will be reviewed to determine if the individual fits the criteria necessary to join the program.

New EMG members are required to complete 40 hours of training in their first year. Training will begin in early September and conclude in December. There will be training classes every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-4:00. Training sessions will be held at both the Hays and Great Bend offices.
