Every child deserves a good Christmas. Each year, various organizations collect gifts for area children to ensure everyone gets a gift. The Great Bend Salvation Army will again have Angel Trees at Walmart and Pizza Hut this year. Barton County Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Vest said applications to get on an Angel Tree must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18.

"If they want to get on the tree, they can call me or they can come by my office at the Central Kansas Dream Center and I can get them an application," she said.

Each angel on the tree will have information about the child and gifts the child has asked for. There are several ways of getting those gifts to the child.

"If you want to give gifts, you can go take one of the angels off the tree," said Vest. "You can either leave the gifts at Walmart or you can drop them by my office at the Dream Center, or they can call me and I will come by and grab it."

Vest is also seeking volunteers for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign that collects money to spend locally. Contact Vest at (620) 869-9447, or find her at the Central Kansas Dream Center, 2100 Broadway Ave., in Great Bend.

One of the most iconic ballet productions in the world will be brought to life this fall as the Barton Dance program and various collaborators present “Nutcracker for the Golden Belt,” with multiple showtimes Nov. 21, 23, and 24 in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Barton campus.

To purchase tickets, visit shows.bartonccc.edu. General admission tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for ages 6-12, and children five and under get free admission. Barton students will be admitted free for student section seating with their ID.

The homegrown production was created in collaboration with members of the region’s dance community. The creative team includes artistic direction from Barton Dance Coordinator Danika Bielek Barton Theatre and Dance alumnus Maddy Casey, Mara Klenda of Ballet Salina, ballet instructor Paige Lofland, and Maddy Rideaux of Be.Studio in Great Bend, former owner of Just Dance Studio Kelley Scott, and Alyson Smith of Aly’s Dance Studio in Great Bend. The cast includes community children, young dancers, adults, and Barton’s dance students. The theatrical ballet features accompanied live music from Barton’s Prairie Winds Concert Band, led by Barton Director of Instrumental Activities Jamie Minneman. Professional dancer Rhiannon Vieyra will be a guest soloist as the Sugarplum Fairy.

Bielek said the project grew from a desire to create an uplifting event for all ages that Barton County can be proud of.

“The Nutcracker is a theatrical ballet based on a fairytale that inspires a sense of the wonder and magic of the holiday season,” she said. “Since its first performance in 1892, the production has been beloved for many generations worldwide. Our team of regional dance experts wants to bring this message of hope and unity. Dance students aged seven and older have launched into ballet training for months to prepare for their dances. Teenagers and adults from the community have rehearsed every weekend to get their theatrical just right. I think everyone has had a good experience putting the production together, and we are ready to share.”

Bielek said that the collaborative nature of this project, coupled with Great Bend’s rural location, resulted in the production being partially funded by an Arts Everywhere grant from the state of Kansas through the Kansas Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. The remaining support comes from Barton Community College’s Fine and Performing Arts Department and local businesses and individuals excited about creating a new holiday tradition for families in our area. The initial funding served as seed money to launch the production that will be performed every other year.

Burdett Thanksgiving community dinner Nov. 28

The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, November 12 shows marked improvement across the state. Barton County has improved some with more land now up to abnormally dry. Stafford County and Pawnee actually have areas totally out of dry conditions. Almost twenty-five percent of the state is out of dry conditions. The six to ten-day outlook (November 19 to 23) indicates a 40 to 50% chance of leaning below normal for temperatures and a normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (November 21 to 27) indicates a 30 to 40% chance of leaning below normal for temperatures and normal to slightly below normal for precipitation.

A great deal has happened over the last month or two. Today, let’s take a moment to catch our breath and see where the agricultural community stands after a busy fall season.

· Harvest is essentially complete and ahead of the five-year average. While there were dryland fields that were abandoned, it was overall a much better year for summer row crops than the last several. Not a great year but a few rains helped. Overall, irrigated corn and soybean crops were good.

· Wheat planting is also almost 100% complete. The pace of fall harvest helped those double cropping after summer crops plant more timely than usual. Overall establishment is good and the crops planted into drier soils have pretty much germinated and emerged thanks to recent rains. The increase in soil moisture will also help the winter survive winter and be in good shape for spring unless it turns off extremely warm with below normal precipitation. The temperature outlook won’t help establishment for late emerging or planted wheat but it won’t hurt. Also compared to the last several years, good wheat and rye pasture should be available for cattle which is needed with the current hay supply.

· The recent rains over the last two weeks have markedly improved the condition of alfalfa fields and helps the plants prepare for dormancy. Much better conditions than the last three plus years.

· On the downside, prices for grains and beans aren’t great. Much of the gains from better yields are offset by low commodity prices. There is a lot going on politically and in this country that needs to be shaken out for these markets over the next six months of so.

· There still isn’t a Farm Bill. With the results of the election, it’s likely there won’t be one before the new Congress or one the incoming President doesn’t agree with. So, a wait and see attitude combined with patience if important.

· Finally, part of the unsettled nature of markets will continue until we are at least three to four months past now. The promised tariffs could result in a tariff war which could dramatically hurt exports that are a substantial part of sales. And the construction and agriculture sectors are preparing for possible mass deportations as immigrant labor is a substantial part of the workforce.

United Way moving Laundry Love in Larned up to Wednesday

Future Caucus announced the recipients of its seventh annual Rising Star Awards, which recognize Gen Z and millennial state lawmakers who embody the organization’s mission to transcend political tribalism by driving innovative, bipartisan legislation that addresses priority issues for their constituents and states.&nbsp;

On November 20, the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://facebook.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5d05cc0b86119122db17cdaae&amp;id=94b80dae83&amp;e=7cf2ab3661">2024 Rising Star Awards</a>&nbsp;will be presented in Washington, DC to two lawmakers:&nbsp;Kansas State Representative Tory Blew&nbsp;(R) and&nbsp;New York State Assembly member Alex Bores&nbsp;(D). Both serve as co-chairs of their respective&nbsp;State Future Caucus. The organization will also present its Generational Changemaker Award to businesswoman and socialite&nbsp;Paris Hilton, for her commitment to criminal justice reform and accountability for youth residential facilities, and to actor and producer&nbsp;Sophia Bush, for her commitment to voter education and civic engagement.

Rep. Blew, who filed for candidacy during her senior year of college and was elected at age 23,&nbsp; has represented Kansas’ 112th State House District since 2017. Blew was selected for the award based both on her long history of cultivating bipartisan partnerships to advance the shared interests of all young Kansans, as well as for her recent efforts to protect vulnerable adults from&nbsp;financial exploitation&nbsp;and increase criminal penalties and require restitution for&nbsp;animal abuse&nbsp;against dogs and horses.

In 2021, Rep. Blew and her Kansas State Future Caucus co-chairs—Rep. Rui Xu (D), Rep. Brandon Woodard (D), and Rep. Nick Hoheisel (R)—were recipients of the Cherisse Eatmon Collective Impact Award.

Kansas lawmaker Tory Blew to receive Political Bridge-Building award

Last week, Barton Community College President Dr. Marcus Garstecki was
able to present a plaque to Vice President of Instruction Elaine Simmons for
celebrating 40 years of working at the college in Great Bend. It worked out
that Simmons would receive another award last week as Kansas State University
presented her with the Transfer Partner Award. 


"Simmons spearheaded the development of the first-ever articulation agreement between Barton's dietary manager program and K-State's program," said Garstecki. "That laid the foundation for many other transfer pathways that have been developed since then."

K-State’s Transfer Partner Award recognizes a community college advisor,
faculty, staff or administration member who has supported transfer students and
has been an advocate for K-State. 

Since 2008, Simmons has seen more than 1,000 Barton
students transfer to K-State to pursue online-degree programs.


"While I was the fortunate person to receive the plaque, that is truly a college award," said Simmons. "There is much yet to be done as we try to smooth out the two-plus-two opportunities for students."

The 2+2 programs allow students to earn an Associates degree at Barton, and to transfer many of those credits to K-State towards the completion of a Bachelors degree.

As part of the award, Simmons receives funding to attend a K-State transfer
summit in October 2025. Barton Community College will also receive a $1,000
Educator’s Choice Award to be given as a scholarship to an incoming transfer
student to K-State in the fall 2025.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas Wheat, in collaboration with Kansas State University researchers, has officially kicked off a new educational campaign aimed at farmers, landowners, financial institutions and policymakers. “Wheat: Beyond the Value of the Grain” emphasizes the wide-ranging advantages of including winter wheat in a cropping system, extending far beyond the grain’s market price.&nbsp;

“The role that wheat plays in global food security is unquestioned,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations. “But what about wheat’s role in a sustainable cropping system? There is more value to winter wheat than the price received for the grain. And now a study has been done to analyze wheat beyond the value of the grain.”

To further explain the campaign and the research behind it, Harries sat down with Romulo Lollato, K-State associate professor of wheat and forage production, for an episode of the “Wheat’s On Your Mind” podcast. The duo discussed the well-documented, multifaceted role of winter wheat in a sustainable cropping system, including its economic and environmental advantages.&nbsp;

“Wheat as a crop brings many benefits to the cropping system,” Lollato said. “In areas such as Kansas, where wheat historically has been an important crop, by excluding it from rotations, we may be missing out on some of those benefits that have made our cropping systems here successful.”

The idea behind the “Wheat: Beyond the Value of the Grain” campaign kicked off just before the 2020 pandemic after the pair investigated a continued reduction in winter wheat planted acres, particularly in Kansas. The project started with a review of the multitude of studies that have been published over the years, not only looking at grain production, but also at the other benefits wheat provides as part of a cropping system. That initial review yielded more than 60 pages of benefits cited from more than 300 studies, highlighting the incredible versatility of winter wheat.&nbsp;

“For us, the versatility and the flexibility of winter wheat gives options to the wheat farmer,” Harries said.&nbsp;

From the very first steps in the growing season, winter wheat offers a significant advantage to producers through its broad planting window, providing much-needed flexibility in managing farm operations. This adaptability also extends to its dual-purpose nature, allowing for both grain and high-quality forage production, ultimately increasing potential economic returns.

Research has also consistently demonstrated the positive impact of incorporating winter wheat into crop rotations. Studies conducted globally, including long-term projects in Kansas, Illinois and Wisconsin, show that including wheat in a cropping rotation significantly boosts yields of other crops like corn and soybeans, compared to monoculture systems. A long-term Kansas study reported a 12-bushel-per-acre increase in soybean yields when rotated with winter wheat, regardless of the tillage system used, compared to continuous soybean cultivation. Similarly, western Kansas corn yields were 14.7 bushels per acre higher after wheat than after grain sorghum.

Furthermore, wheat helps improve soil structure, organic matter content and nutrient cycling, enhancing soil health. Wheat’s presence also helps control pests and diseases, reducing the need for chemical pesticides.&nbsp;

The research is clear — integrating winter wheat into cropping systems represents a strategic approach to maximizing crop yields and productivity. By leveraging winter wheat’s diverse benefits and addressing associated challenges through informed management practices, farmers can achieve sustainable agricultural practices that support long-term profitability and environmental stewardship.&nbsp;

These quantified benefits of winter wheat and more are now a research paper, but the campaign’s goal is to disseminate more digestible, two-page extension-style publications that focus on each benefit separately.&nbsp;

Kansas Wheat launches campaign conveying the benefits of wheat

A Larned native is the new Director of Clinic Operations at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH) where she has strong ties professionally and personally.

Jewel Davis, who has been at PVCH for four years, served as Family Medicine Clinic Manager prior to her recent promotion.

Her responsibilities include a focus on the PVCH Specialty Clinics that offer many services close to home.

“Our specialty services are incredibly valuable for our community,” Davis said. “They allow patients and families to access expert care locally, without the need for long commutes to larger cities. They can receive high-quality care just down the street.

“This saves time and reduces the need for patients and caregivers to take extended time off work,” she added. “We strive to make healthcare more accessible and convenient for everyone.”

Specialty Clinics and their providers include: wound care, Heather Holaday, APRN; cardiology, Kaylan Wagle, MD, and Megan Homolka, APRN; pulmonology, Lesa Klozenbucher, APRN; urology, Ed Habash, PA; and sleep, Son Troung, MD.

Personal side “The hospital and its clinics have played a huge role in my family’s life for many years,” Davis commented. “This wonderful hospital cared for my husband, a cancer survivor. Without our local specialty services, we would have had to travel long distances.

“This journey played a huge role in my desire to serve other PVCH patients,” she continued. “I have the opportunity to give back to my community that willingly supported my family during a very challenging time. The care, love and support our providers and staff offered is unbelievable. I am proud and blessed to be part of this amazing team.”

Davis earned an associate’s degree in business management at Pratt Community College and has further education and experience in accounting. She graduated from the Kansas Hospital Association Leadership Institute in 2022 and the National Association of Rural Health Clinics Spring Institute the following year.

Her professional background includes positions as Controller/Corporate Office Manager at Straub International; Corporate Office Manager and Accountant for Francis Financial/Corrosion DC; and business manager at Dwight Shank Chevrolet, and Simmons and Simmons.

“I have worked in Larned for 26 years and held leadership positions for 24 of those years,” Davis noted.

Jewel Davis promoted at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) is globally recognized to remember people killed and seriously injured on roadways. This year, WDoR is Nov. 17, and it recognizes the victims, families and communities affected by traffic crashes and urges everyone to improve traffic safety. This year’s theme is Remember. Support. Act.

In 2023, 387 Kansans lost their lives in traffic crashes. Preliminary data shows fatal crashes are down this year throughout the state, but more can be done.

“As we remember the lives lost on Kansas roadways, we are reminded to always buckle up, slow down and make smart choices,” said KDOT Behavioral Safety Manager Gary Herman.

Nov. 18 to 22 is also Crash Responder Safety Week, which recognizes those who clear roadways after a crash and promotes improved awareness to help keep responders safe. This year’s theme is “Responders Ahead! Reduce Your Speed As You Proceed.”

Kansas’ Move Over law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights, including towing and recovery vehicles, traveling in the same direction.

“We can enhance safety and increase response times for our emergency responders by simply slowing down and moving over for them to do their job,” Herman said.

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) is globally recognized to remember people killed and seriously injured on roadways. This year, WDoR is Nov. 17, and it recognizes the victims, families and communities affected by traffic crashes and urges everyone to improve traffic safety. This year’s theme is Remember. Support. Act.Objectives of WDoR include:<ul>
 <li>Remembering those killed and seriously injured in crashes.</li><li>Acknowledging the efforts of emergency services.</li><li>Advocating for traffic victims and families.</li><li>Promoting ways to prevent and stop traffic deaths and injuries.</li>
 </ul>In 2023, 387 Kansans lost their lives in traffic crashes. Preliminary data shows fatal crashes are down this year throughout the state, but more can be done.“As we remember the lives lost on Kansas roadways, we are reminded to always buckle up, slow down and make smart choices,” said KDOT Behavioral Safety Manager Gary Herman.Nov. 18 to 22 is also Crash Responder Safety Week, which recognizes those who clear roadways after a crash and promotes improved awareness to help keep responders safe. This year’s theme is “Responders Ahead! Reduce Your Speed As You Proceed.”Kansas’ Move Over law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights, including towing and recovery vehicles, traveling in the same direction.“We can enhance safety and increase response times for our emergency responders by simply slowing down and moving over for them to do their job,” Herman said.

USD 428 elementary students will soon dive into "Dog Days" by Karen English as part of the 2025 Great Bend Reading Initiative, beginning Jan. 10, 2025. This year’s selection invites students and families to explore themes of friendship, responsibility, and community through the eyes of the young protagonist.

The Great Bend Reading Initiative (GB Reads) was first launched in 2015 to foster literacy skills and family engagement. Each year, students in grades Kindergarten through 6th receive a copy of a selected book, which is then read and discussed throughout the district and community. 

“GB Reads is a popular program among students, families, and teachers,” said JoAnn Blevins, director of teaching and learning for USD 428. “The initiative strengthens family engagement, builds literacy skills, and creates important connections with the community.”

In addition to receiving a copy of "Dog Days," students and families will enjoy a variety of events to complement the reading experience, including classroom visits from local guests and interactive discussions. USD 428 will also launch a Community Scavenger Hunt, powered by the Goosechase app. In this unique event, students and families will search for “dog bones” hidden around the Great Bend area, with many local businesses contributing support and host “missions” for participants. Prizes will be awarded to those who complete the scavenger hunt with the highest scores.

Highlights of the 2025 GB Reads Program include: -&nbsp; Free book for all USD 428 students, Kindergarten through 6th grade&nbsp;

- Community Scavenger Hunt on Goosechase – Families can explore the community and complete missions to locate dog bones, with prizes awarded to top participants 

- Classroom visits and special lessons from local partners

The Hoisington Middle and High schools present Showcase 2024 this weekend with performances from the High Seas and 1880s Dakota Territory.

The 7th &amp; 8th-grade vocal group will present the mini-musical “Pirates” by Jacobson/Emerson.&nbsp; The King of the High C’s and his crew are heading to a music competition when a stowaway has been discovered.&nbsp; What will they do with the stowaway?&nbsp;&nbsp;

The High School Vocal Department will perform the Melodrama “Tied to the Tracks” by Kelly/Christiansen/Kittleson.

Travel back to the 1800s and meet the Notorious Villain, Sillias Scavenger, Heroine, Dakota Melody, Hero, Billy Bold, and the female Bandit Queen, Wild Prairie Rose. You will be hitched to your seat as the performance unfolds the story of love, lies, and deceit.

All performances will be at the Hoisington High School in the Lee Dick’s Auditorium.

Saturday, Nov. 16 - 7 pm Sunday, Nov. 17 - 3 p.m.&nbsp;

As a program designed to get math and science teachers into Western Kansas classrooms, the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship continues to provide connections, funding, and mentorship through continued engagement. “Fostering STEM Futures: Resiliency and Assessment Practices” was the theme of the Midwest Annual Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program, attended by FHSU faculty, students, and alumni.

The conference, held in St. Louis, Missouri, in October, was designed to strengthen and expand the partnerships and networks established through previous Noyce Conference grants.

Attending the conference were FHSU faculty members,&nbsp;Dr. Janet Stramel, Dr. Paul Adams, Dr. Bill Weber, Dr. Matthew Clay, Mr. Earl Legleiter, Mrs. Ann Noble,&nbsp;along with FHSU students&nbsp;Kobi Shubert, WaKeeney; Lili Shubert, WaKeeney;&nbsp;Mollie Houtz, Elkhart;&nbsp;Sarah Abernathy, Oberlin, and former FHSU students:&nbsp;Katie Flax, math teacher in Western Plains, and Kole Clarke, science teacher in Lyons. Dr. Jeff Sekavec, a community college partner from Colby Community College, also attended the conference.

Applications are now underway for the 2025 National Science Foundation (NSF) Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship, an award of $15,000 per year (renewable for a second year). According to Dr. Stramel, six to seven scholarships are expected to be awarded.

Stramel said that a significant change from previous NSF grants is FHSU’s coordination with its community college partners (Colby, Dodge City, Garden City, Seward County, and Barton County.)

“As a recruiting tool, we are giving financial assistance to community college students who have an interest in teaching math or science,” Stramel said. “We are also working to develop a certificate program in rural education.”

"We're on a five-year rotation on all of our computer equipment," Axman said. "We replace 20 percent of our machines each year. That way, there's no big expenditirues in any one particular year and we don't overwhelm our IT department in any particular year."

The district will replace 92 teacher laptop computers, 24 desktop computers, and three computer labs. The district also replaces one third of its Chromebooks issued to students each year, and that contract will go before the board in the spring.

Axman also updated the board on wi-fi installation in Great Bend activity busses to allow student-athletes the opportunity to complete work on trips. Axman expects a contract for the service to be approved in the spring with installation of the wi-fi beginning after July 1.

Looking at turkeys for your holiday meals? Here are some tips to help make your holiday turkey safe and healthy. Turkey is a healthy choice since it is considered a white meat and full of protein! Some tips for keeping it as healthy as possible is to bake it and not fry it or use herbs and lemon to season rather than butter and salt. Allow one pound (1 lb) of turkey per person you are serving.

Thawing turkeys can be tricky but remember to thaw them in one of three ways: in the refrigerator, in cold water, or the microwave. Allowing your bird to thaw at room temperature can allow dangerous bacteria to grow. Washing a raw turkey or poultry also spreads bacteria around the kitchen so you can save time and skip washing the bird. To roast the turkey, start with an oven temperature set at least at 325 degrees. Timetable for turkey roasting varies based on size and if the turkey is stuffed or not. The turkey should reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees when it is thoroughly cooked. Allow the turkey to stand for 20 minutes before carving.

Turkeys must be kept at a safe temperature during "the big thaw." While frozen, a turkey is safe indefinitely. However, as soon as it begins to thaw, any bacteria that may have been present before freezing can begin to grow again.

Immediately after grocery store checkout, take the frozen turkey home and store it in the freezer. Frozen turkeys should not be left on the back porch, in the car trunk, in the basement, or any place else where temperatures cannot be constantly monitored.

A package of frozen meat or poultry left thawing on the counter more than 2 hours is not at a safe temperature. Even though the center of the package may still be frozen, the outer layer of the food is in the "Danger Zone" between 40 and 140 °F — at a temperature where foodborne bacteria multiply rapidly.

There are three safe ways to thaw food: in the refrigerator, in cold water, and in the microwave oven.

When thawing a turkey in the refrigerator:

· Plan ahead: allow approximately 24 hours for each 4 to 5 pounds in a refrigerator set at 40 °F or below.

· Place the turkey in a container to prevent the juices from dripping on other foods.

A thawed turkey can remain in the refrigerator for 1 or 2 days before cooking. Foods thawed in the refrigerator can be refrozen without cooking but there may be some loss of quality.

First be sure the turkey is in a leak-proof plastic bag to prevent cross-contamination and to prevent the turkey from absorbing water, resulting in a watery product.

Submerge the wrapped turkey in cold tap water. Change the water every 30 minutes until the turkey is thawed. Cook the turkey immediately after it is thawed.

A turkey thawed by the cold water method should be cooked immediately. After cooking, meat from the turkey can be refrozen.

Follow the microwave oven manufacturer's instruction when defrosting a turkey. Plan to cook it immediately after thawing because some areas of the food may become warm and begin to cook during microwaving. Holding partially cooked food is not recommended because any bacteria present wouldn't have been destroyed.

Even though the center of the package may still be frozen, the outer layer of the food is in the "Danger Zone" between 40 and 140 °F — at a temperature where foodborne bacteria multiply rapidly.There are three safe ways to thaw food: in the refrigerator, in cold water, and in the microwave oven.Refrigerator ThawingWhen thawing a turkey in the refrigerator:· Plan ahead: allow approximately 24 hours for each 4 to 5 pounds in a refrigerator set at 40 °F or below.· Place the turkey in a container to prevent the juices from dripping on other foods.REFRIGERATOR THAWING TIMESWhole turkey:· 4 to 12 pounds — 1 to 3 days· 12 to 16 pounds — 3 to 4 days· 16 to 20 pounds — 4 to 5 days· 20 to 24 pounds —5 to 6 daysA thawed turkey can remain in the refrigerator for 1 or 2 days before cooking. Foods thawed in the refrigerator can be refrozen without cooking but there may be some loss of quality.Cold Water ThawingAllow about 30 minutes per pound.First be sure the turkey is in a leak-proof plastic bag to prevent cross-contamination and to prevent the turkey from absorbing water, resulting in a watery product.Submerge the wrapped turkey in cold tap water. Change the water every 30 minutes until the turkey is thawed. Cook the turkey immediately after it is thawed.COLD WATER THAWING TIMES· 4 to 12 pounds — 2 to 6 hours· 12 to 16 pounds — 6 to 8 hours· 16 to 20 pounds — 8 to 10 hours· 20 to 24 pounds — 10 to 12 hoursA turkey thawed by the cold water method should be cooked immediately. After cooking, meat from the turkey can be refrozen.Microwave ThawingFollow the microwave oven manufacturer's instruction when defrosting a turkey. Plan to cook it immediately after thawing because some areas of the food may become warm and begin to cook during microwaving.
