Posted May 20, 2025 2:00 PM

The Ellinwood Recreation Commission is inviting the public to join them in a heartfelt tribute to a man whose passion for community and recreation left a lasting legacy. On June 5, 2025, at 5:15 p.m., a special ceremony will be held at 501 S. Main Street to formally dedicate and rename the community’s softball complex to Stephen C. Richter Memorial Fields.

Stephen C. Richter, the late Recreation Director for Ellinwood, is remembered fondly by many for his tireless efforts in supporting youth programs, building strong community connections, and promoting recreational opportunities for all ages. His leadership and dedication helped shape the recreation landscape in Ellinwood, touching the lives of families, athletes, and residents for years.

“This renaming stands as a lasting tribute to a man who believed in the power of recreation, the strength of community, and the importance of giving back,” the Commission shared in a recent Facebook post announcing the event.

Following the dedication ceremony, attendees are encouraged to stay and cheer on local athletes. The evening will feature a doubleheader from the 10-12 girls’ softball team, with T-Ball and Coach Pitch games kicking off at 6:00 p.m.

The community is invited to attend and help honor Stephen Richter’s memory through the spirit of the game and the joy of youth sports — a fitting celebration for a man who made it his life’s work to build up others through recreation.

Forever remembered. Forever part of Ellinwood.
