The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of McCracken public water supply system located in Rush County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

The advisory took effect on July 3, 2024, and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of water line break resulting in low pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Summer is here, and with the sun and fun come plenty of safety hazards. As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, there are additional risks if you choose to celebrate with fireworks. However, the holiday doesn’t have to be hazardous if you know what dangers to watch for and how to avoid them.

Thousands of people are injured by fireworks every year badly enough to need medical attention, and most of those injuries could have been prevented. The most common injuries are burns to the hands, arms or face, and eye injuries.

Peter Mick, APRN in The University of Kansas Health System Great Bend Campus Emergency Department, offers these tips to help you prevent injuries to yourself and those around you:

· Do not allow children to light fireworks. · Closely supervise children around fireworks . · Educate children about the dangers of fireworks. · Maintain a safe distance from fireworks. · Never shoot fireworks toward people. · Keep a bucket of water nearby. · Have a well-stocked first-aid kit handy. · Soak spent and unused fireworks well before discarding.

If an injury from fireworks occurs, remember: · Stop the burning process. · Use cool – not cold or icy – water to help cool the burn. · Keep the burned area covered. · Do not pop blisters that develop.

If an eye injury occurs: · Don’t rub your eyes. · Don’t rinse your eyes. · Don’t apply pressure to your eyes. · Don’t remove objects stuck in the eye.

University of Kansas Health System: Safety while using fireworks

According to the Small Business Administration, the survival rate for a business after 10 years is just 30 percent. Great Bend Coffee has beat the odds. LaResa and Eugene Likes purchased the establishment from Paul and Barb Wagner nine years ago. After putting their own touches on the popular eatery and building a loyal fan base, it's time to move on. LaResa recently announced her plans to sell the business.

"I need some family time," she said. "My family is my passion. I have six kids, 18 grandkids, and the 19th one is due next week. They have ballgames and stuff, and I don't get to go to anything because I'm open six days a week and I'm the cook. Everybody says, 'You can hire somebody to do that,' but it isn't the same. I'm very picky. I want it to go out right."

LaResa grew up in St. John, spent 25 years in Belpre, and has spent the last 25 years in Great Bend. Nine years ago, she decided to turn her love of baking into a business. 

"I was trying to buy another restaurant in Larned but the bank said no because it had already failed four times and they didn't want to set me up for failure," she said. "The realtor asked if I'd been to Great Bend Coffee. I told her I didn't drink coffee so why go in a coffee shop? I came down and saw what they had. It wasn't just coffee."

The Likes purchased the business. LaResa did the baking and Eugene did the cooking. The emphasis was on keeping everything made from scratch. LaResa revamped the menu in the restaurant with colored chalk on a large wall so everyone could see the various coffees, sandwiches, baked goods, and pizzas available.

"Paul and Barb had gone to Italy, and those were names of towns they had seen," LaResa said. "That's where the names all came from. I added a few things to it and changed the bread recipe to make it mine."

Health issues snuck up on Eugene and he was no longer able to do the cooking. Even with more than a dozen staff, LaResa usually puts 12-14 hour days into the business, arriving by 6 a.m. six days a week to do all the baking. The hard work has paid off with relationships with teachers, courthouse staff, various clubs, and the many other regulars who visit.

"I will miss the people," LaResa said. "It's always been about the people. I love making somebody happy. They're all just part of my family here. Everybody comes and says, 'You can't do this. You can't sell it.' But they understand."

Part of Great Bend Coffee's appeal, other than the food and coffee, is the atmosphere. Patrons bring in their own coffee cups. Kids have a place to play in the back. Everything is geared toward togetherness.

"I want people to come in and feel like they're at home," LaResa said. "We don't have TVs. We have radio and it's back in the kitchen, basically for us. People want to visit. They want to be able to hear each other talk. The radios were a distraction."

It's never been about the money for LaResa, but it is a business. She believes there are plenty of opportunities for a buyer to expand business ventures with the future opening of the Graystone event space above Great Bend Coffee and the success of Dry Lake Brewing across the street.

"I hope they want to keep it as a coffee shop," she said. "I'll sell the name and everything with it, and they can change it up and add more things. It has potential to grow. You can buddy up with the brewery and be their food truck. I'm not open in the evenings. I don't have enough hours in my day. But if somebody had a second person, they could keep it open all day."

Great Bend Coffee is now for sale but it is not in danger of closing. LaResa plans to keep it business as usual until a buyer comes along - and beyond if necessary.

"I will stay and train with them as long as they need me," she said. "I will not leave someone to die in the dirt. I don't want to set anyone up to fail. It's a working business and it does do well."

Air conditioner issues have forced the Great Bend Public Library to be
closed the past few days. Already replacing a pump, technicians believe the
heat exchanger is now the source of the problem.


The City of Great Bend has a strong interest in maintenance and infrastructure
at the library because the city’s agreement is to pay for any capital or
expense over $5,000. Councilmember Alan Moeder said he has an issue with the
current contract with the library, specifically since the city did not have a
role in the HVAC system the library chose.


"They went with a very high efficiency system which is really great when it works," said Moeder. "In my field, when they go down, it's very expensive to fix. We didn't get a choice in what they picked, so I have a problem in us having to pay for their maintenance. I think we need to look at their contract."

Great Bend City Administrator Brandon Anderson said Library Director Maribeth
Shafer is working to get a quote for the expense. In the meantime, the library
has been too hot for staff or patrons at this time.


"During budget discussions with Maribeth, we asked her to put a capital improvement plan together for the library," said Anderson. "She's done that. I know a rough draft will go to her board at their next meeting."

After receiving $650,000 in this year’s budget, the library requested an additional
$50,000 from the city for the library’s 2025 budget.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

When the aggressive nature of Palmer amaranth (pigweed) is combined with the limited post-emergence herbicide options in grain sorghum, problems often arise – even when an adequate preemergence herbicide program is used. This article highlights post-emergence herbicide options for Palmer amaranth control in grain sorghum. To see the full version of the article with use rates, recommended surfactants, and plant height restrictions. Search for K-State Agronomy eUpdates, June 27th issue. Combinations of the herbicides listed here will generally improve control, and all of the options are most effective when applied to small (under 4 inches tall) pigweeds. Atrazine can control sensitive populations of Palmer amaranth and can be combined with other herbicides to enhance effectiveness. Aim (carfentrazone) is a Group 14 herbicide that can be applied to grain sorghum between 4 inches and boot stage. It is less effective than some of the other herbicides in this article and requires good coverage for maximum effectiveness.

2,4-D is an effective herbicide option to control Palmer amaranth. However, crop response should be expected, especially if applied in hot, humid conditions. Dicamba, at the rates used in grain sorghum (0.5 pint), may be less effective on Palmer amaranth than 2,4-D. Bromoxynil can be applied from the 3-leaf stage through boot stage. Crop response will be less with bromoxynil than other herbicides, but bromoxynil alone will not control Palmer amaranth larger than 4-leaf. Bromoxynil is a contact herbicide that is not translocated in the plant. Therefore, adequate spray coverage is needed for maximum effectiveness.

Huskie (pyrasulfutole+bromoxynil) is most effective when mixed with atrazine (up to 1 pound). When used alone, it can be applied between 3-leaf and 30 inches and should be applied with HSOC (high surfactant oil concentrate) or AMS + NIS. Huskie will cause leaf burn, which can be greater in fields where mesotrione was applied pre-emergence. Huskie plus atrazine may be tank-mixed with phenoxy broadleaf herbicides such as 2,4-D or dicamba.

Imiflex (imazamox) can only be applied to igrowth grain sorghum and only in fields that were not sprayed preemergence. Imiflex is an ALS-inhibiting herbicide, and ALS-resistance is assumed to be widespread in Kansas. However, there is limited evidence that it may still contribute to suppression of ALS-resistant pigweeds. For susceptible Palmer amaranth plants, herbicide applications should target plants that are 3” tall or less.

Other herbicide resistant sorghum technologies are also on the market and this technology specifically targets grasses. These technologies include Inzen sorghum from Corteva with the herbicide partner Zest WDG and DoubleTeam sorghum from S&amp;W seeds with the herbicide partner First Act.

CAMPBELL: Palmer amaranth control in grain sorghum

On June 26, at approximately 6:15 p.m., officers from the Great Bend Police Department responded to a residence in the 1200 block of Baker Avenue in Great Bend in reference to the execution of a search warrant stemming from an ongoing investigation involving drug trafficking. 

Officers made entry to the residence and apprehended Tracy Reeves, age 46, and Jesse Pribble, age 36. During a search of the residence, detectives located methamphetamine, fentanyl, marijuana, controlled substances, drug paraphernalia and evidence of distribution. 

Reeves was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail. Reeves was booked on charges of distribution of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp. Reeves was booked in lieu of $100,000 cash surety bond.

Pribble was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and no drug tax stamp. Pribble was booked in lieu of $10,000 cash surety bond. Pribble was also booked on an outstanding warrant out of Barton County for failure to appear.

Barton Community College will be closed July 4 for Independence Day, and the college is closed on Fridays during the summer through July 26. Campus will reopen July 8.

Major League Baseball's Pitch Hit &amp; Run is returning to Great Bend before the July 4 holiday. Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., athletes from 7-14 years of age can test their ability in three categories at the Great Bend Sports Complex. Rec Sports Director Shane Sandberg explained the competition.

"They get five hits off of a tee and those will be measured and counted toward the total score," he said. "They get five pitches at a target that will be counted toward the final score. They will run from home to first twice and we will take the fastest one."

The event is again hosted by the Great Bend Rec and Optimist Club of Great Bend. The competition is for boys and girls.

"There are four different age groups for boys and girls: 7 and 8-year-olds, 9 and 10-year-olds, 11 and 12-year-olds, and 13 and 14-year-olds," Sandberg said.

The competition will take place on fields 2 and 3 of the Great Bend Sports Complex. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. Bats will be provided though athletes may use their own bat. The winner of the Great Bend Pitch Hit &amp; Run will advance to the next level of competition.

Pitch Hit & Run competition returns to Great Bend July 3

Just one agenda item made it before the Barton County Commission Tuesday ahead of the July 4 holiday. The board did vote 5-0 for the purchase of a new heavy-duty tire changer for the Road and Bridge Department. County Works Director Darren Williams presented the item to the commission.

"Recently, staff determined the addition of a heavy-duty tire changer would improve operations," he said. "In addition to staff safety, time management and productivity would be improved while reducing maintenance costs."

The county will purchase a Hunter TCX635PHD at a cost of $23,276. Williams said the old tire changer may be at least 50 years old and has not worked in some time. The department often deals with tires weighing more than 200 pounds, and Commissioner Duane Reif said that can open the door for more expenses.

"A 200-pound tire, that's a good example of a workman's comp claim," he said. "A workman's comp claim can eat up $23,000 really quickly."

Barton County currently operates more than a dozen dump trucks, each with 10 tires. Williams said front tires need to be replaced every 15-20,000 miles so the new tire changer will be used often.

Barton Commission approves purchase of heavy-duty tire changer

Crude prices are up nearly ten percent from the first of June, and nearly 16% since the first of January. The near-month, NYMEX contract for light sweet crude settled Friday at $81.54 per barrel, ending the month of June nearly seven dollars higher than June 1st and $11 higher than January 1st. US Crude prices gained another two percent by lunchtime Monday, with NYMEX benchmark rising over $83 per barrel and London Brent topping $86.The Kansas Geological Society recognized and named three new oil fields and two infield wildcat discoveries at its meeting last month in Wichita. The new fields are located in Gove, Rawlins and Thomas counties.

Operators filed 93 new intent-to-drill notices statewide last month, &nbsp;506 for the first half of this year. The Kansas Corporation Commission reports Barton County with four new intents in June, 14 for the year so far, compared to 27 through June last year. Ellis County shows two new intents last month. That's five so far this year, compared to 24 through the first half of 2023. Russell County reports another two in June for a year-to-date total of six intents, which is up two from a year ago. Stafford County reports two intents in June, and eight through June, compared to 19 through June last year.

The Kansas Geological Survey reports statewide output rose from less than 59-thousand barrels a day in January to over 78-thousand barrels a day in February, as Kansas and much of the country dug out from under a winter storm event that shut down a big part of the patch. County averages all showed improvement in February, but all lag behind last year's tallies. Ellis County output through February averaged over five thousand barrels per day (bpd). Barton County was over 3,700 bpd. Russell County rises over 3,400 bpd, while Stafford County is over two thousand daily barrels.

Regulators in Kansas last week okayed 24 permits for drilling at new locations, or 474 for the first half of the year, compared to 651 a year ago. There are ten new permits in Western Kansas including one in Barton County and one in Ellis County.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 18 new well-completions for the week, or 643 so far this year. That's down from 874 by the end of June last year. There were just two completions in Western Kansas last week, including one in Russell County. The Kansas Rig Count is unchanged for the week, gaining two rigs in eastern Kansas and losing two west of Wichita. The tally is down seven percent from a month ago, and 32% lower than a year ago.

The weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes was down six oil rigs and one gas rig for a total of 581 active rigs. That's the lowest total since December of 2021. Texas was down five rigs. Oklahoma and New Mexico were each down one.US crude production remained unchanged in the lower 48 states for the second week in a row. Output from Alaska dipped by four thousand barrels a day.&nbsp; The Energy Information Administration reports average output nationwide for the week through June 21st of 13,210,000 barrels per day.

Commercial crude stockpiles increased by 3.6 million barrels from a week ago. EIA reports inventories of 460.7 million barrels as of June 21st. That's about two percent below the five year average for this time of year.

The government has add 1.7 million barrels to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in the last two weeks. They've notched a savings for the federal treasury of $238 million, by selling high and buying low. The Energy Department is refilling SPR for about $15 per barrel less than when we sold reserves to combat rising crude prices. Total strategic reserves are up more 24 million barrels from a year ago.

The US is a net crude importer by about 2.7 million barrels per day. Crude imports last week were down from a week earlier, but up from a year ago, at 6.6 million barrels per day. Four-week average imports are up nearly a million barrels a day from last year.&nbsp; The government report shows nearly four million barrels a day of crude exports, down half a million daily barrels from the week before. The four-week average is up half a million daily barrels from last year.

We're setting records for the amount of natural gas energy producers don't vent or flare. Despite, or perhaps because of record natural-gas production in the United States, the government says we've reduced the amount of natural gas this is burned at the well head or vented into the air. The Energy Information Administration reports 1.5% of all the natural gas we pulled out of the earth last year was vented or flared, the lowest rate in 18 years. Natural gas production during last year increased to a record of 125-billion cubic feet per day.&nbsp; Among history's worst offenders, North Dakota dropped from a venting and flaring rate of nearly 20% five years ago, to just over five percent last year.

Another big player places another big bet on Liquefied Natural Gas. Shell has agreed to buy out the government of Singapore for an undisclosed price to take control of its huge LNG trader Pavilion Energy. Major energy players are banking on a growing role for natural gas, and predict demand will rise by more than 50% in the next 16 years. Shell is already the world's largest player in Liquefied Natural Gas. The company expects the deal to close by early next year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

US Crude prices gained another two percent by lunchtime Monday, with NYMEX benchmark rising over $83 per barrel and London Brent topping $86.The Kansas Geological Society recognized and named three new oil fields and two infield wildcat discoveries at its meeting last month in Wichita. The new fields are located in Gove, Rawlins and Thomas counties.Operators filed 93 new intent-to-drill notices statewide last month, &nbsp;506 for the first half of this year. The Kansas Corporation Commission reports Barton County with four new intents in June, 14 for the year so far, compared to 27 through June last year. Ellis County shows two new intents last month. That's five so far this year, compared to 24 through the first half of 2023. Russell County reports another two in June for a year-to-date total of six intents, which is up two from a year ago. Stafford County reports two intents in June, and eight through June, compared to 19 through June last year.The Kansas Geological Survey reports statewide output rose from less than 59-thousand barrels a day in January to over 78-thousand barrels a day in February, as Kansas and much of the country dug out from under a winter storm event that shut down a big part of the patch. County averages all showed improvement in February, but all lag behind last year's tallies. Ellis County output through February averaged over five thousand barrels per day (bpd). Barton County was over 3,700 bpd. Russell County rises over 3,400 bpd, while Stafford County is over two thousand daily barrels.Regulators in Kansas last week okayed 24 permits for drilling at new locations, or 474 for the first half of the year, compared to 651 a year ago. There are ten new permits in Western Kansas including one in Barton County and one in Ellis County.Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 18 new well-completions for the week, or 643 so far this year. That's down from 874 by the end of June last year. There were just two completions in Western Kansas last week, including one in Russell County. The Kansas Rig Count is unchanged for the week, gaining two rigs in eastern Kansas and losing two west of Wichita. The tally is down seven percent from a month ago, and 32% lower than a year ago.The weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes was down six oil rigs and one gas rig for a total of 581 active rigs. That's the lowest total since December of 2021. Texas was down five rigs. Oklahoma and New Mexico were each down one.US crude production remained unchanged in the lower 48 states for the second week in a row. Output from Alaska dipped by four thousand barrels a day.&nbsp; The Energy Information Administration reports average output nationwide for the week through June 21st of 13,210,000 barrels per day.Commercial crude stockpiles increased by 3.6 million barrels from a week ago. EIA reports inventories of 460.7 million barrels as of June 21st. That's about two percent below the five year average for this time of year.The government has add 1.7 million barrels to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in the last two weeks. They've notched a savings for the federal treasury of $238 million, by selling high and buying low. The Energy Department is refilling SPR for about $15 per barrel less than when we sold reserves to combat rising crude prices. Total strategic reserves are up more 24 million barrels from a year ago.The US is a net crude importer by about 2.7 million barrels per day. Crude imports last week were down from a week earlier, but up from a year ago, at 6.6 million barrels per day. Four-week average imports are up nearly a million barrels a day from last year.&nbsp; The government report shows nearly four million barrels a day of crude exports, down half a million daily barrels from the week before. The four-week average is up half a million daily barrels from last year.We're setting records for the amount of natural gas energy producers don't vent or flare. Despite, or perhaps because of record natural-gas production in the United States, the government says we've reduced the amount of natural gas this is burned at the well head or vented into the air. The Energy Information Administration reports 1.5% of all the natural gas we pulled out of the earth last year was vented or flared, the lowest rate in 18 years. Natural gas production during last year increased to a record of 125-billion cubic feet per day.&nbsp; Among history's worst offenders, North Dakota dropped from a venting and flaring rate of nearly 20% five years ago, to just over five percent last year.Another big player places another big bet on Liquefied Natural Gas. Shell has agreed to buy out the government of Singapore for an undisclosed price to take control of its huge LNG trader Pavilion Energy. Major energy players are banking on a growing role for natural gas, and predict demand will rise by more than 50% in the next 16 years. Shell is already the world's largest player in Liquefied Natural Gas. The company expects the deal to close by early next year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

News from the Oil Patch: Crude prices rise 16% in 6 months

Great Bend Fire Chief Brent Smith is thankful for the moisture the area
has received but would not mind a little more prior to the 4th of
July holiday. 

The Great Bend Fire Department will have extra staff on hand for
the fireworks extravaganza throughout the holiday. Typically staffed with nine
firefighters each shift, Smith said there will be 18 firefighters available
Thursday to mitigate grassfires and other fireworks-related accidents.


"We've had accidents the last couple of years that have involved some people missing fingers and parts of their bodies that they should have attached to them," said Smith. "Please be careful when you're shooting off fireworks. We don't want to see you that night for that reason."

Police Chief Steve Haulmark echoed Smith’s comments, wanting the public to have
a fun, responsible holiday.


"Not everyone is a fan of fireworks, so keep that in mind," said Haulmark. "Owners of small, domestic animals...maybe keep them inside if you can. We have a lot of dogs that run off and get scared. If you do have small animals, make sure they have an ID tag on them."

As of Monday evening, seven block parties have been approved by the City of
Great Bend for the 4th of July. Citizens have to have permits
approved and pay a fee to receive barricades from the city. The parties
can only block half of the street to still allow emergency vehicles through if
needed.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Pork Chop, Snoop Hogg, and Alexander Ham-ilton. Those were just a few of the pig names for Sunday's Celebrity Showmanship near the conclusion of the 2024 Barton County Fair. Sunflower Diversified's Angie Hicks won the contest despite having no direct experience showing livestock.

"I've never shown, but I watched my daughter for a good six years showing for the Barton County 4-H clubs," Hicks said. "I've always been on the outside of the ring so it was awesome to finally get my chance in the ring. I think that gave me a little bit of an advantage at least having seen a show before."

The seven celebrity showmen answered questions about their animals, including weights and feeding habits. Barton County Fair Board Treasurer Kate Wary said that's typical in regular showmanship. Another trick is knowing where to look while showing a pig.

"Ideally, if the judge is looking toward you, you should be able to watch the judge all the time," she said. "You should have full control of your animal without having to stare at is is the goal."

Troy Miller, executive board member for the fair, did the judging. He reminded contestants to walk, not run after their pigs. That proved to be a difficult task for Eagle Radio's Shannon Towns as her pig, Tank, delighted the crowd with an energetic performance. Clara Barton Medical Center's Kelci Burkey was named reserve showman.

Hicks named top celebrity showman at 2024 Barton County Fair

Things have been looking up for the Great Bend Bat Cats. The Barton County Commission proclaimed June 25 as Bat Cat Day. Later that evening, the baseball team defeated the league-leading Kansas Cannons at Al Burns Memorial Field, then swept Newton ahead of Sunday's All-Star game in Wichita. Eight Bat Cats took the field Sunday in Wichita with some heavy hearts. Following Thursday's win against Newton, Manager Roger Ward said someone burglarized the team's clubhouse.

"Whoever did it worked really hard at trying to get in multiple ways, and they finally got in," he said. "It's like our office. We're a non-profit business. We finally worked and got all this stuff."

Taken were various items including cash, checks, a safe, and various electronics, both personal and team-related. Ward's immediate thoughts were about the future of the team.

"Being the leader of the program, I've had to try to keep my head straight when, to be honest, this is the first time in a while I've wanted to just disappear," he said Monday morning on 1590 KVGB's "AM Great Bend Show." "Lot of personal guilt, feeling guilty, blaming myself. Everything flashes in front of you; the last eight years of what you've tried to build."

But there is hope. Friday morning, Ward reached out to the manager of the Hutch Monarchs. That manager reached out to Fastenal. Already, firework packages have been donated to auction for the team. Others are donating cash.

"Teammates of mine from over 30 years ago," Ward said, "people around the country, former players, families, random people, people who just care about the Bat Cats, about our community, about the kids that are here, even families of current players who have already invested a lot of time, they want to make sure we finish it out."

Tuesday night, the Bat Cats will play the Great Bend Bombers in an exhibition game. The Great Bend Recreation Commission will have free hot dogs and sno cones for rec league players who attend. Different groups of players will also run the bases in between each inning.
