If The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation hadn’t been available to a local military veteran, “I would probably be homeless now because I couldn’t stay where I was.”

James, who didn’t want to use his real name, shared his experiences at The Center, which now offers specialized services for vets.

“I told my therapist at The Center about my elder-abuse situation and she suggested I talk with their vet specialist, Jeff McQuade,” James recalled. “When I was told that he would call me, I thought, ‘yeah, sure.’

“But he called right away, came to get me and changed my life. I am now living on my own in a great one-bedroom apartment that is close to almost everything I need.”

Previously, James was living with someone who became physically abusive and eventually threatened him with a weapon.

“I was scared for myself and this roommate,” James said. “I was on edge all the time and I didn’t want to have to defend myself or hurt someone else.”

James served in the U.S. Army in the 1970s, working as a mechanic. Today, he gets around pretty good even though his mobility is limited as a result of decades of manual labor “and maybe because I’m getting older.”

When McQuade, The Center’s veteran care coordinator, learned about this situation, he first sought advice from the Veterans Administration. He then began calling shelters and other entities that could provide a safe environment for James.

“Within a week, we found this apartment,” James said. “It was impressive that it happened so fast. Actually, I was so happy I started crying. It was a real whirlwind.”

“You could say my life was chaotic before The Center stepped up to help me. And now it is peaceful.”

It was obvious from the outset that James “was ready to get out of town,” McQuade remembered. “I suggested we try a few local resources first. We are both glad we did.”

The Family Crisis Center, American Legion, Catholic Charities, a church and the Community Food Bank of Barton County all played big roles in helping James.

“They helped with transportation, food, finances and paperwork,” McQuade said. “This invaluable support allowed us to streamline all the details. They helped turn his life around and greatly enhanced his quality of life.”

McQuade also is a U.S. Army veteran. “This means when I work with James or any other vet, I get it.”

James added that he and McQuade “found a lot of common ground; it is good to talk with someone who understands. Jeff said he would do everything he could and stuck with it. He is a man of his word.”

The vet specialist emphasized that The Center doesn’t “just drop people off somewhere. We follow up regularly to ensure James receives support and doesn’t feel overwhelmed.”

This is why McQuade encourages other vets to contact him if they need help of any kind. “It doesn’t hurt to call. We will find the best resources. Just as in James’ situation, the veteran is the captain of the boat.

“We lay out options but it is the veteran’s choice of where to go and what to do. We don’t say ‘this is how it is going to be. Take it or leave it.’”

McQuade noted that while this situation was handled within a short amount of time, “we cannot always guarantee things will run this smoothly. It depends on the circumstances but I can tell you one thing - we will do everything we can to help quickly.”

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (2/7 - 2/9)

As another reminder, the City of Great Bend, in partnership with JEO Consulting
Group, will be conducting in-person visits to homes and businesses starting
Monday, Feb. 10 as part of a federally mandated water service line inventory. 

Multiple
surveys have been sent out to water customers in Great Bend asking what type of
material their water line is made of as it enters the home. Great Bend Public
Works Director Jason Cauley said this door-to-door approach hopes to get more
results from those that have not submitted information.


"On the city side of things, we have gone through our documentation," said Cauley. "Through that documentation, we were able to glean enough information to complete our side of it. Now we're working on the private side. That's where we lack those numbers for completion."

This will help identify and address any potential lead service lines and ensure
safety of the water system.

Lead & copper survey visits starting today in Great Bend

When Great Bend High School student Trey Milsap was a youngster, he took a tour of the Great Bend Fire Station, which left him fascinated with the world of emergency response, and he is now working as a part-time firefighter for the Great Bend Fire and EMS Department all before graduating high school.

Before he zeroed in on being a firefighter, he also became interested in law enforcement as well as being an EMT. So, he signed up for ride-a-longs with local agencies for all services, and after helping work a small grass fire on his law enforcement ride-a-long, he knew his true passion was to fight fires.

Shortly after rolling alongside the professionals, he quickly enrolled in Barton’s one-semester EMT certificate program to pursue his dream of being a fireman.

“I would say that helping people on what could be their worst day and the adrenaline at a moment's notice are what has drawn me to it,” he said.

Milsap could take the EMT course almost at no cost thanks to the state-sponsored Excel in CTE Initiative, which allows Kansas high school students to take specific career technical courses tuition-free.

While he has only spent a semester at Barton so far, Milsap said he’s had a positive experience that has helped him enter the workforce with the skills he needs.

‘Barton provided a lot of hands-on time to practice skills learned, such as placing basic airway adjuncts, for example,” he said. “The technology in the EMT program was advanced, including a new ambulance simulator inside the facility as well as a fully functioning ambulance, which both have their uses.”

Part of the program is also doing calls with our EMS partners in the area and running calls alongside them in the field, which Milsap said were invaluable.

“Our field internships are a requirement to complete the course, and they helped me a lot by allowing me to transfer what we learn in the classroom setting to real situations,” he said. “I ran a few real calls with some diversity, so I was able to perform a variety of skills.”

Milsap said his journey is just beginning. After high school, he plans to work full-time for the Great Bend Fire Department.

“I look forward to continuing my career at Great Bend Fire and EMS long-term, along with furthering my education at Barton over the next few years,” he said. “My main goals moving forward consist of obtaining more certifications in both fire and EMS fields and striving for promotions at the fire department.”

Christmas decorations downtown this past holiday season due to a streetscape project
that installed new light poles. A Christmas lights fundraiser has been
organized in Larned to purchase new decorations for the next holiday season.
 Committee member Rachel Hill said businesses and individuals can help sponsor a
light pole or donate any amount.
 "Our goal is get decorations from 4th Street up to 14th Street, west down 14th Street and also down Southwest Trail," said Hill. "That would go in front of the Santa Fe Liquormart, Bliss Salon &amp; Boutique and the diner that is down there." Hill said the goal is to collect $75,000. Sponsorships of at least $250 will

The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, Feb. 4 continues unchanged from the last several weeks. The six to ten-day outlook (February 11 to 15) indicates a 60 to 70% chance of likely below normal for temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (February 13 to 19) indicates a 33 to 40% chance of leaning below normal for temperatures and near normal for precipitation.

In spite of our recent weather, planting season for 2025 summer row crops is just around the corner. One of the most important aspects of planning is the design of a weed control program. This involves not just herbicides but a concept termed Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Herbicides are likely part of the concept but it involves a wide range of considerations: sanitation, cultural practices, mechanical control, and herbicides. It involves a great deal of planning and the ability to adapt quickly. Today, briefly, what goes into IPM?

· After determining what crops will be planted where, the next step is to determine the weed and herbicide history of the field. What are the problem weeds? What herbicides were previously used over the last several years? Are there herbicide resistance issues with glyphosate, atrazine, etc.? Do I have to rethink the crop for that field based on these problems?

· Next, depending on the crop, what possible GMO or non-GMO traits are available in the hybrids/varieties? Do they fit my cropping program? How much will it cost for these traits? A producer should look at the average production history of the field and determine if the cost is worth it?

· Determine the weed control plan. Chemical control only? Tillage only? A combination of tillage and chemical control? Preemergence chemical application only? Post-emergence weed control only? Pre- plus post- emergence application. Do I use a soil-applied residual? If I use a residual, what effect will it have on my crop rotation considerations? This is a difficult choice as the increasing occurrence of herbicide resistant weeds has led to more tillage for weed control. That can waste soil moisture and lead to a greater chance of wind and water erosion. There are chemical options available to overcome resistance but they tend to be more expensive.

· One last item. A great deal of are must be given to selecting herbicides with different active ingredients, what kills the weed. It’s not simply a different chemical name. Each active ingredient belongs to a group. They are grouped by how they kill the plant and each group targets a different system/tissue. We have to use a variety of modes of action to prevent resistance from occurring.

The event welcomed more than 80 attendees, including business leaders, community stakeholders, and campaign supporters eager to secure a bright future for Great Bend.

Chamber President &amp; CEO Megan Barfield, alongside Chairman of the Board Rob Bauer, led the evening’s program, unveiling a vision to secure the Chamber's role in strengthening the local economy through five targeted initiatives: Workforce Development; Business &amp; People Retention; Membership Development &amp; Support; Business &amp; Community Marketing; and Business Advocacy.

Capital campaign kick-off fuels growth for Great Bend Chamber

Great Bend native Patrick Heath found himself involved in Super Bowl LIX. In an odd way. During Monday's press conference in New Orleans, Guillermo Rodriguez with ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" presented Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes with a pillow to sign as part of a bit. The comedy? Mahomes was surprised to find a shirtless photo of himself on the other side of the pillow. Heath knew right away it was his photo from last year's championship parade in Kansas City.

"I saw the photo when the pillow turned around and I recognized all the reactions in the faces in the photo," he said. "Mahomes' wife was next to him in the photo. I recognized instantly that that was my photo. I went back and checked and it ended up being the exact same one."

Heath had temporarily posted but removed his photo on Shutterstock, a website where photographers can sell their work. Kimmel's staff thought they had properly purchased the photo until Heath reached out to them.

"The next day, I got a panicked phone call from their team," he said. "It was pretty interesting. Their media director apologized profusely for the mistake and made sure they got the proper license from me so they could use the bit."

The bit aired on Thursday's edition of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Under the licensing agreement, Heath was not named as the photographer. And the signed pillow went elsewhere.

"Unfortunately, the pillow did have prior obligations," Heath said. "I'm not sure if it's a charity event or a producer's kid or something like that, but they compensated me much more than I expected for the pillow. They made sure I was treated right."

Heath called it an interesting week, starting with the excitement of seeing his photo make Mahomes smile. But it was also an important lesson in professional courtesy.

"I just wanted to make sure I got credit for it because, as a photographer, you don't really get opportunities like that a lot," he said. "I think it's really important to have the proper licenses when you're using an image of somebody who goes out and does the work to get those images. It meant a lot for them to care enough to call me and personally apologize for it and make it right."

Great Bend native's photo featured in Super Bowl presser comedy bit

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland announced $4.13 million in tax credits will be made available under the Kansas Department of Commerce’s Community Service Tax Credit Program (CSP).

“Revitalizing our communities and state requires targeted investments that make people want to live and work in Kansas,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “CSP supports communities by substantially reducing the cost for donors to make contributions to charitable organizations that help fund important local projects.”

The Community Service Tax Credit Program provides an opportunity for private, non-profit organizations and public healthcare entities to improve their ability to undertake major capital campaigns involving community service, non-governmental crime prevention, youth apprenticeship and technical training, and healthcare services.

Under the program, the state authorizes nonprofit organizations to offer tax credits to donors that make contributions towards approved projects. Organizations are chosen through a competitive selection process in which applications are thoroughly analyzed to determine award sizes and final awardees.

Proposed projects must be unique or one-time in nature while creating lasting value for charitable organizations. Projects could include a capital campaign, major equipment purchase, major renovation, capacity building and more.

Applications will be open March 1 through April 30. Those applying may request up to $200,000 in tax credits. Applicants in rural communities of less than 15,000 population are eligible for a 70% credit. Those applicants not located in rural areas are eligible for a 50% credit.

In-person attendance is required at all orientation day sessions for students to attend actual classes. Barton CC to host adult education classes in downtown Great Bend

Winter is a “watch and see” season for Kansas wheat producers as their fall-planted stands wait in dormancy. Thanks to a combination of good stand establishment and moisture events, the coffee shop chatter remains optimistic thus far that this harvest will be better than the last, even as recent freezing temperatures threatened the crop with winterkill damage.&nbsp;

Richard Cott, who farms in north central Kansas, shared during the recent Kansas Wheat board meetings, that there is lots of hope, thanks to good stands established in the fall and more than a foot of snow that lay evenly on fields.&nbsp;

Still, it’s no secret to anyone who wandered outside, it got cold in Kansas from January 18 through January 21, with temperatures dropping as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit. According to an eUpdate from K-State Agronomy issued on January 23, air temperatures were low enough to cause leaf burn but soil temperatures at two inches down never dropped below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.&nbsp;

The crop was further protected from snow cover following winter storms on January 6. According to the eUpdate, just two to three inches of snow should be sufficient to insulate the wheat crop from the coldest temperatures.&nbsp;

John Hildebrand, near Stafford, reported receiving nearly a foot of snow that stuck around for days and had rain come on top. Stands look good in his area in central Kansas.&nbsp;

But even the crops left without a blanket of snow still had good stand establishment from moisture this fall, especially for fields planted early. In fact, some of these early-planted fields were considered “too big” going into dormancy. Armed with a large number of tillers and good root development, the crop was and is set up to withstand a Kansas winter.&nbsp;

Jason Ochs from Syracuse and Mike McClellan from Rooks County both shared that their early planted wheat, planted as early as September 15, might fall into that “too big” for winter category, but the stands are up across the board and look loads better than the past couple of years.&nbsp;

According to the eUpdate, “A well-developed crop with three to five tillers can handle air temperatures in the single digits fairly well. Over 60 percent of the Kansas wheat crop emerged by mid-October and likely falls in this category. However, soil temperatures in the single digits can cause significant damage and winterkill, especially to less developed crops, such as the fields that emerged after November (about 25 percent of the Kansas crop), which will be more sensitive to winterkill with higher temperature thresholds for damage.”

Late-planted fields without snow cover are the most susceptible to winterkill damage, and there are parts of the state that will need more moisture than anything else as the crop emerges from dormancy. Kyler Millershaski, who farms near Lakin in southwest Kansas, reported he had to redrill some wheat, but it doesn’t look “too terribly bad.” While the top layer of soil is still dry and rain totals are still counted in hundredths, the crop still looks better than the past couple of years.

In the monthly winter crop progress and condition report, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported winter wheat conditions with slight improvements from the month prior at 50 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor, as of the week ending February 2.&nbsp;

The true impact of the combined winter weather will not be seen until the crop comes out of dormancy, which K-State estimates will be in another 50 to 60 days. Until then, producers will continue to monitor fields and count the drops or flakes that fall into the rain gauge.&nbsp;

Thanks to a combination of good stand establishment and moisture events, the coffee shop chatter remains optimistic thus far that this harvest will be better than the last, even as recent freezing temperatures threatened the crop with winterkill damage.&nbsp;Richard Cott, who farms in north central Kansas, shared during the recent Kansas Wheat board meetings, that there is lots of hope, thanks to good stands established in the fall and more than a foot of snow that lay evenly on fields.&nbsp;Still, it’s no secret to anyone who wandered outside, it got cold in Kansas from January 18 through January 21, with temperatures dropping as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit. According to an eUpdate from K-State Agronomy issued on January 23, air temperatures were low enough to cause leaf burn but soil temperatures at two inches down never dropped below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.&nbsp;The crop was further protected from snow cover following winter storms on January 6. According to the eUpdate, just two to three inches of snow should be sufficient to insulate the wheat crop from the coldest temperatures.&nbsp;John Hildebrand, near Stafford, reported receiving nearly a foot of snow that stuck around for days and had rain come on top. Stands look good in his area in central Kansas.&nbsp;But even the crops left without a blanket of snow still had good stand establishment from moisture this fall, especially for fields planted early. In fact, some of these early-planted fields were considered “too big” going into dormancy. Armed with a large number of tillers and good root development, the crop was and is set up to withstand a Kansas winter.&nbsp;Jason Ochs from Syracuse and Mike McClellan from Rooks County both shared that their early planted wheat, planted as early as September 15, might fall into that “too big” for winter category, but the stands are up across the board and look loads better than the past couple of years.&nbsp;According to the eUpdate, “A well-developed crop with three to five tillers can handle air temperatures in the single digits fairly well. Over 60 percent of the Kansas wheat crop emerged by mid-October and likely falls in this category. However, soil temperatures in the single digits can cause significant damage and winterkill, especially to less developed crops, such as the fields that emerged after November (about 25 percent of the Kansas crop), which will be more sensitive to winterkill with higher temperature thresholds for damage.”Late-planted fields without snow cover are the most susceptible to winterkill damage, and there are parts of the state that will need more moisture than anything else as the crop emerges from dormancy. Kyler Millershaski, who farms near Lakin in southwest Kansas, reported he had to redrill some wheat, but it doesn’t look “too terribly bad.” While the top layer of soil is still dry and rain totals are still counted in hundredths, the crop still looks better than the past couple of years.In the monthly winter crop progress and condition report, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported winter wheat conditions with slight improvements from the month prior at 50 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor, as of the week ending February 2.&nbsp;The true impact of the combined winter weather will not be seen until the crop comes out of dormancy, which K-State estimates will be in another 50 to 60 days.
