What's going on at Cheyenne Bottoms? Anyone who wants to know can attend the annual information night at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28. Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wager said the event is a time to share some information and have a little fun.

"We'll give everybody an update on what we've done a little more in depth, and give people the opportunity to roast me and ask questions," he said.

With hunting seasons on the horizon, staff is only in the office for a small portion of the day. Wagner said the annual informational meeting is a good way for locals to catch up on happenings around the Bottoms.

"These coming weeks prior to the season, we stay very busy and we're not in the office answering the phone very much," he said. "I know the few minutes I've been able to be in the office lately, the phone has been ringing a lot, and I have a very short period of time to get a lot of stuff done."

Wagner also provided a water-level update on his monthly appearance on "The Cheyenne Bottoms" Show Thursday on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM. Pool 1A still has about 46 inches of water, down six inches from June, and Pools 1B and 1C are around 42-43 inches. The Bottoms was bringing in approximately 200 cubic feet of water a second earlier this summer, but that has been reduced to a trickle now at 10 cubic feet per second.

"We're still way better than what we've been the last few years," said Wagner. "We're still planning on putting water in three different pools right now, and we'll see where we go from there and how much water we have."

Cool and wet conditions predicted for next week will help staff continue to move water as needed.
