In anticipation of calving season, the Kansas State University Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and K-State Research and Extension are planning a series of calving schools beginning in December and continuing through January.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;The program will outline overall calving management that includes stages of the normal calving process, and tips to handle difficult calving situations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;K-State Research and Extension beef veterinarian A.J. Tarpoff said the&nbsp;goals include increasing producers’ knowledge and practical skills, and the number of live calves born if they need assistance.&nbsp;

&nbsp;He said presenters will also share tips on when and how to intervene to assist the cow or heifer. They will also demonstrate proper use of calving equipment on a life-size cow and calf model.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;“Our goal is for producers to leave better prepared for calving season,” Tarpoff said. “We will discuss timelines on when to examine cows for calving problems, and when to call your vet for help if things are not going well. We will also discuss calf care early in life. It’s an excellent program regardless of experience level.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;The meetings will have other timely educational topics, such as forage sampling/analysis, and vaccine care and handling. &nbsp;&nbsp;

What is the most nutritional U.S. vegetable? The natural components in sweet potatoes help the body resist some of our most common deadly diseases. So, overall, the sweet potato is close to being a superfood.

Fresh sweet potatoes are a best buy because they come with their skin. The skin has nutrients of its own. Plus, it helps make a sweet potato´s fiber content equivalent to the fiber in a bowl of oatmeal.

Sweet potatoes also are a great source of vitamin E and beta-carotene (vitamin A). These antioxidants bolster the human immune system. They provide protection against cancer, heart disease and stroke. Some evidence suggests they even help delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Sweet potatoes also are basically fat- and cholesterol-free, setting them apart from other vitamin E sources such as nuts, avocadoes and vegetable oils. In addition, sweet potatoes have a low glycemic index, which is important to both diabetics and carbohydrate counters for maintaining steady blood- glucose levels. A low glycemic index means you digest them slowly. Another benefit of that, of course, is they make you feel full longer.

Sweet potatoes provide from one-third to one-half of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, another immune system booster. Sweet potatoes are also an important source of vitamin B6 and iron. They contain folate, a B vitamin that´s essential for cell growth and

reproduction. They´re among the top three food sources of potassium, which helps maintain normal blood pressure and the body´s heart and nerve functions.

It doesn’t hurt that the sweet potato is fairly low in calories. And, it’s virtually sodium-free, all-in-all a great choice for eating year-round. If handled gently, unwashed sweet potatoes can store well for weeks or even months in a dry, cool (55-60 F) location. Sweet potatoes are only washed right before cooking because moisture promotes spoilage.

UNRUH: Super sweet potatoes

Five years ago this month our Barton and Ellis County Extension boards took the first steps to create the Cottonwood Extension District. By June of 2017 we received official word that our operational agreement had been approved by the Attorney General’s office. Today more than half of the counties in Kansas are part of an Extension District. The district concept provides an opportunity for team members to specialize in certain subject matter areas and streamline some of the operations.

Today I want to share the most recent election results, which will bring some new faces to our eight-member Executive Board beginning in 2022. Newly elected to a four-year term in Ellis County are Donna Maskus and Kelsey Stremel. Receiving the most votes in Barton County were Lori Waters and Lexi Straub. These four individuals will be joining Kathie Rondeau, Dick Dougherty, Tatum Kimzey, and Allen Roth, as we look to provide relevant and impactful Extension programming in the year ahead.

I want to publicly thank the outgoing board members who really helped lay the groundwork as the Cottonwood District formed. There were extra committee meetings related to office policies and budget considerations. After all, we were taking two counties’ Extension programs and fine tuning them to create an Extension District that would meet the needs of you, the taxpayer. Deanna Essmiller and Natalie Fullerton, in Barton County and Nathan Leiker and Ramie Wasinger, from Ellis County, completed their 4-year terms. Each one of them had served additional years on their county boards before the Cottonwood District formed.

I am not sure of the combined number of years of volunteer service the four outgoing board members have, but it would be impressive. And that is what I appreciate so much about the Extension Education system in Kansas. We are known as a grassroots organization that places oversight of our Extension programming in the hands of those closest to us.

Election Results - Barton County

The polls will be open Tuesday in Barton County from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Voters in Great Bend and Ellinwood will be deciding if they want to see increases in sales taxes. In Great Bend's Ward 2, there is a contested race for the Great Bend City Council, and Claflin's voters will be selecting three council members. Five candidates are on the ballot there.&nbsp;

There are contested races for school board members in Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood. Voters countywide will pick three trustees for Barton Community College.&nbsp; Two board members will also be chosen for the Cottonwood Extension District.&nbsp;

In Kansas, voters also have the option of writing in names for all elected positions.&nbsp;

Deputy Assistant Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler said&nbsp;the election results should be available Tuesday by 8:30 p.m. or 9 p.m.&nbsp;

"When the polls close, the poll workers&nbsp;and&nbsp;the supervisors will bring everything back to our office and get that all uploaded,” Schmeidler&nbsp;explained. “The results will be posted on the website after we get them in.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Five candidates are on the ballot there.&nbsp;There are contested races for school board members in Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood. Voters countywide will pick three trustees for Barton Community College.&nbsp; Two board members will also be chosen for the Cottonwood Extension District.&nbsp;In Kansas, voters also have the option of writing in names for all elected positions.&nbsp;Deputy Assistant Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler said&nbsp;the election results should be available Tuesday by 8:30 p.m. or 9 p.m.&nbsp;"When the polls close, the poll workers&nbsp;and&nbsp;the supervisors will bring everything back to our office and get that all uploaded,” Schmeidler&nbsp;explained. “The results will be posted on the website after we get them in.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You can see the election results on bartoncounty.org. Barton County: Have your say the American way

In just a couple of weeks, we’ll be celebrating one of my favorite 4-H events in the annual Achievement Celebration!

The 4-H year begins in October with 4-H members selecting projects, setting goals, and working on those project areas throughout the year. Hopefully, along the way, they share their knowledge with friends, a school class, or present a demonstration or illustrated talk about their project. We also hope that they will find ways to give back to their communities in one or more of their project areas.

Project learning, leadership, and citizenship are hallmarks of the 4-H program and it is always important to celebrate successful learning! Often the most important lessons don’t come with blue ribbons but do come from perseverance, thinking of others, and working through challenges.

4-H members complete record books which highlight their activities and involvement for the year and provide a platform to work on written communication skills as well as provide a record for someday filling out scholarship or job applications! 4-H members are also encouraged to complete a project record for one or more of their projects. The project record goes into detail about when, where, and what project learning occurred; what challenges were faced and how they overcame the challenge. For our younger 4-H members, this includes a place for a parent to note what they believed their child learned from the program and I love reading these! Older 4-H members have an opportunity for top-placing project records to compete at the regional and, potentially, state level. While record keeping isn’t the most glamorous part of 4-H, our banks and accountants appreciate that we develop good record keeping skills!

Even putting the Achievement Celebration together is project learning as this is handled by a committee of youth and parents so they practice including others, creativity, and teamwork. We are looking forward to an evening to “Show Your True Colors” in 4-H!

CAMPBELL: Emergency measures to control wind erosion

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is helping introduce more fruits and vegetables to 53,015 Kansas elementary school students through a $3.3 million award to the state. Great Bend and Larned schools are among several that took advantage of the award.

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) divided the award between 186 schools, with each school receiving $65 per student.

“I think it’s an exciting program that helps students experience fresh fruits and vegetables,” said Meg Boggs, KSDE’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program director.

Participating schools provide access to fresh fruits and vegetables to students at no charge. Students learn that produce can be a healthy and delicious snack, and the program gives teachers an opportunity to offer nutritional education to their students.

“This partnership helps schools provide Kansas students with healthy food that can fuel them for overall success,” said Cheryl Johnson, KSDE’s director of Child Nutrition and Wellness. “Our vision for education is that Kansas leads the world in the success of each student. Nutrition is an important part of helping students achieve success.”

Schools apply for the program in the spring. The $3.3 million awarded to Kansas is for the 2022 federal fiscal year, which begins in October, Johnson said.

The goals of the FFVP are to introduce children to fresh fruits and vegetables; to include new and different varieties; and to increase overall acceptance of fresh, unprocessed produce among children. The FFVP also encourages healthier school environments by promoting nutrition education, according to the USDA.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program benefits Great Bend & Larned schools

Most people know family members, friends, neighbors or co-workers whose lives have been touched by some form of cancer. And, while cancer research on both prevention and treatment is ongoing, findings suggest that changes in lifestyle can reduce the risks of some cancers.

A K-State publication “Lower Your Risk of Breast Cancer” by Sandy Proctor, K-State Nutrition specialist, describes actions women can take to reduce the risk of this type of cancer. In the United States, breast cancer is the second most common cancer after skin cancer. In Kansas, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer.

Some risks are not controllable. If you are a female and you are over 50 your risk is higher. If you have a family member who has had breast cancer, you are also at greater risk. However, there are risks that are controllable. The first important step is to maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight can increase the risk of breast cancer and losing weight can decrease the risk.

Another important lifestyle step is to eat a diet rich in vegetables and fruits and whole grain foods. The third important practice is to exercise. Studies have shown that women who exercise four or more hours a week have lower risk of breast cancer.

Limiting the amount of alcohol consumed is also important. The risk increases as the amount of alcohol increases. The use of hormone replacement therapy is also a possible risk. Check with your health care professional about alternative options.

A key strategy to preventing breast cancer is early detection. The most common screening is a mammogram or x-ray of the breast. If there is not a family history of breast cancer, it is suggested that women age 45-54 get a mammogram every year. Women age 55 and older can choose to have a screening every other year or continue with an annual mammogram. If there is a family history of breast cancer, your physician will likely set up a schedule with earlier screenings.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be hosting a free Stop ‘N Learn Session titled “Lower Your Risk of Breast Cancer” on Wednesday, October 27th, from 12:00 – 1:00 pm at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center (2715 18th&nbsp;Street).&nbsp;

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.&nbsp; Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cancer death in American women.&nbsp; This program will help identify the risk factors for developing cancer and will give examples of lifestyle choices that will help reduce the risk of breast cancer.

The presentation will also be available on the Great Bend Rec Facebook page as a live event.&nbsp; Berny Unruh, Cottonwood Extension District Family &amp; Community Wellness Agent, will be the speaker for the program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GBRC: Stop 'N Learn - Lower your risk of breast cancer

There are three names that will appear on the ballot for the Nov. 2 General Election for the Cottonwood Extension District board. One of the three,
Alexa (Lexi) Straub, was able to attend the League of Women Voters candidate forum
last Thursday in Great Bend. 

Straub is a 19-year-old from Ellinwood that has
been heavily involved in 4-H and wants to keep her connections with the
Extension District, despite aging out of 4-H soon. 
"In 4-H, the biggest thing you learn is that showing up does more for you than anything else," said Straub. "So I'm here today. I showed up. Being able to stay involved in Extension and 4-H would mean everything to me." 
Straub is currently a sophomore at Barton Community College studying marketing.

The Cottonwood District encompasses both Barton County and Ellis County and
extends technical expertise and research findings to help people improve their
homes, families, farms, businesses and communities. 

Straub has served in 4-H
for 13 years. 
"Just being in 4-H, at the county fair, being around livestock and raising livestock gives you that agriculture aspect," said Straub. "I've done everything you can imagine in Kansas State 4-H." 
The other two filings for the Cottonwood Extension District #17 board are Lori Waters
and Rita Stolz. Voters will be asked to elect two.

Barton County 19-year-old running for elected position

Wheatland Electric Cooperative Inc., is giving away a $1,000 Sharing Success grant to an organization located within its service territory for the second year in a row.

Giving Goodness, a charity challenge, begins 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, and will run through 7:59 a.m. on Nov. 12. The public challenge is run entirely on the cooperative’s official Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/WheatlandElectric/.

Members of the public can help their favorite organization (or other community-based charitable cause) win a $1,000 Sharing Success grant by nominating one or more organizations starting Oct. 25 and then rallying their friends and family during three consecutive rounds of voting on Facebook.

To participate, Facebook users should visit Wheatland’s official Facebook page starting Oct. 25 and tag their favorite local organization or community-based cause in our Giving Goodness social post. The nominee must be an organization that serves members within our service territory and must not have already received a Sharing Success grant during our 2021 grant cycle. (For a complete list of Sharing Success recipients that are ineligible, see below.)

Participants should not only tag their favorite charitable or community-based organization but also tag their friends and family to garner more “likes.” These “likes” will count as individual votes toward the nominated organization. Voting on this first round will run through Nov. 1 at 7:59 a.m.

Starting Nov. 1, four eligible organizations with the most “likes” during the previous round will advance to a Final Four round, where they will square off. Participants can once again vote by “liking” their favorite contender though Nov. 8 at 7:59 a.m.

The top two organizations from our Final Four round will advance and battle for the Giving Goodness title starting Nov. 8.

If there is a main shut-off valve for the system, close it and then run through the zones to make sure any pressure has a chance to bleed off. Lawn irrigation systems usually have shallow lines. Though some lines may be self-draining, check to be sure there are no manual drains. If manual drains are present, they should be opened. Be sure to map them so they can be closed next spring before the system is pressurized. &nbsp;If there are no manual drains the system should be blown out with an air compressor. &nbsp;Lawn irrigation companies often offer this service.

Barton County candidate forum this Thursday

Teamwork is an important aspect of youth development. We all have to work with others – at our jobs, in civic organizations, and even when we have fun.

Good teamwork takes communication skills and a willingness to set aside your own success for the good of the group.

A little over a week ago, Barton County 4-H families came together to put on our annual 4-H BBQ and this requires a great deal of teamwork!

We have a great crew who gives up a Saturday morning to prepare the meat with one of those families monitoring the cooking process for the next 24 hours.

We had great groups of families who showed up to pour tea, roll silverware, prepare the sides, set up tables and chairs, and stand in the rain to direct traffic, take tickets, deliver meals to the cars. They washed dishes and mopped the floors. If we needed someone in a different role, they quickly adjusted and moved to where they were needed.

In addition, most of the clubs set up informational displays about many of the nearly 40 project areas offered by Kansas 4-H.

In addition to the 4-H families, we appreciate the teamwork of several local organizations which include Moeder Oil, KFC, Town &amp; Country Supermarket, Barton Community College, the Barton County Fair Association, Ellinwood Packing, and several individuals which include Aaron Maresch, Kevin Arnberger, and Aaron Spanier. We also appreciate the media, chambers of commerce, libraries, and rec centers who shared information to help make this event a success. You have all set a great example of community teamwork!

October is National Emotional Wellness Month. The National institute of Health offers tips to improve your emotional mental health. Everyone feels stressed from time to time but it may be hard to recognize the signs and symptoms of stress. Stress is how the body and the brain respond to any demand. The problem is not everyone deals with stress the same way.

Not all stress is bad. Often stress will help motivate us to get something done. Stress may actually help a person get a better grade on a test or win a race. But stress can also build up and causes problems.

Long term stress can harm your health and over a long period of time, it can cause strain on your body and cause serious health problems. This is when learning to manage your emotional wellness is so important. There are ways to manage or handle life’s stresses and adapt to the difficult times.

During the last two years the word resilience has been used quite often. People who are emotionally well have fewer negative emotions and are able to bounce back after difficult situations.

The first step to improving your emotional health is to develop a more positive mindset by practicing gratitude and spending time with positive people. The second tip is to manage your stress by getting enough sleep, exercising regularly and find an activity that is relaxing to

you. The third important tip is to get quality sleep. Sleep affects both our mental and physical health. Sleep helps you think more clearly, have quicker reflexes and focus better.

Fourth, practice being award of what is happening in the present – all that is going on around and inside of you. Stop and take some deep breaths in through your nose, hold it for a second and then slowly exhale through your mouth. It may be necessary to repeat this throughout the day until you are totally aware of what is happening in your body.

Fifth, if someone you love dies, your world changes. To help cope with this loss, take care of yourself. Talk to a good and caring friend. Be patient with yourself. Grieving is very difficult and mourning just takes time.

The sixth strategy is to strengthen your social connections. This has been particularly difficult over the last year and a half but it is important to find ways to connect to help your emotional wellness. Reach out to your family and friends but make connections with new groups, take a class or volunteer for something you care about. Social connections can greatly influence your emotional well-being.

UNRUH: Improving your emotional wellness

University of Nebraska Extension Educators and Weed Specialist want to make the agriculture industry aware of recent developments regarding the herbicide Roundup™. While variations on the Roundup name have been used for a variety of different herbicides marketed by Bayer (formerly Monsanto), this article discusses only the Roundup formulations that contain glyphosate as their active ingredient. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), in its glyphosate interim registration review, published in January 2020, found “that there are no risks to human health from the current registered uses of glyphosate and that glyphosate is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans.” In 2021, the European Union’s (EU) Assessment Group on Glyphosate (AGG) determined that when used according to label directions, “a classification of glyphosate with regard to carcinogenicity is not justified.”

Other regulatory agencies have come to similar conclusions, indicating that when used properly and according to directions, glyphosate poses little risk to human health.

Over the past several years, however, glyphosate has been the subject of much litigation after the International Agency for Research on Cancer found it to be “probably carcinogenic to humans” in a hazard assessment that did not consider real-world exposure levels.

Bayer has recently announced steps it plans to take in an effort to put Roundup litigation behind it:

· Petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court in August to review Hardeman v. Monsanto, in which the plaintiff was awarded monetary damages after alleging Roundup caused his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. If the Court were to grant review, it would likely render a final verdict sometime in 2022.

· Plans to replace its glyphosate products in the lawn and garden market with products containing alternative active ingredients. According to Bayer, “This move is being made exclusively to manage litigation risk and not because of any safety concerns.” The company expects this process to begin in 2023. Glyphosate formulations for the professional and agricultural sectors will remain available. This means that while Bayer will stop selling glyphosate products at the average box store, the chemistry will still be available to farmers and trained professionals.

As a crop protection tool, glyphosate is invaluable. To continue the safe and effective use of Roundup products in the market, Bayer plans to hold discussions with US EPA regarding labels to assist consumers in making informed decisions when purchasing and applying Roundup products. The company will also set up a new website with scientific studies regarding Roundup and its safety. Bayer is exploring a Scientific advisory composed of scientific experts that are not affiliated with Bayer to review scientific information on safety regarding Roundup.

 </figure>University of Nebraska Extension Educators and Weed Specialist want to make the agriculture industry aware of recent developments regarding the herbicide Roundup™. While variations on the Roundup name have been used for a variety of different herbicides marketed by Bayer (formerly Monsanto), this article discusses only the Roundup formulations that contain glyphosate as their active ingredient. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), in its glyphosate interim registration review, published in January 2020, found “that there are no risks to human health from the current registered uses of glyphosate and that glyphosate is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans.” In 2021, the European Union’s (EU) Assessment Group on Glyphosate (AGG) determined that when used according to label directions, “a classification of glyphosate with regard to carcinogenicity is not justified.”Other regulatory agencies have come to similar conclusions, indicating that when used properly and according to directions, glyphosate poses little risk to human health.Over the past several years, however, glyphosate has been the subject of much litigation after the International Agency for Research on Cancer found it to be “probably carcinogenic to humans” in a hazard assessment that did not consider real-world exposure levels.Bayer has recently announced steps it plans to take in an effort to put Roundup litigation behind it:· Petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court in August to review Hardeman v. Monsanto, in which the plaintiff was awarded monetary damages after alleging Roundup caused his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. If the Court were to grant review, it would likely render a final verdict sometime in 2022.· Plans to replace its glyphosate products in the lawn and garden market with products containing alternative active ingredients. According to Bayer, “This move is being made exclusively to manage litigation risk and not because of any safety concerns.” The company expects this process to begin in 2023. Glyphosate formulations for the professional and agricultural sectors will remain available. This means that while Bayer will stop selling glyphosate products at the average box store, the chemistry will still be available to farmers and trained professionals.As a crop protection tool, glyphosate is invaluable. To continue the safe and effective use of Roundup products in the market, Bayer plans to hold discussions with US EPA regarding labels to assist consumers in making informed decisions when purchasing and applying Roundup products. The company will also set up a new website with scientific studies regarding Roundup and its safety. Bayer is exploring a Scientific advisory composed of scientific experts that are not affiliated with Bayer to review scientific information on safety regarding Roundup.Bayer provides an announcement regarding this situation at the links listed below. CAMPBELL: Update on Roundup brand herbicides

Pruning in August can stimulate new growth that is less hardy during the winter. &nbsp;But what about pruning at this time of year? &nbsp;

Woody plants move sugars and other materials from the leaves to storage places in the woody portions of the plant just prior to leaf fall and we would like to maximize those stored energy reserves. &nbsp;Even pruning later in the fall can cause a problem by reducing the cold hardiness of woody plants. &nbsp;

Dr. Rich Marini at Penn State Extension has written, “Based on everything that has been published we can conclude that woody plants do not attain maximum cold hardiness when they are pruned in the fall. Trees are affected more by heavy pruning than light pruning.” &nbsp;However, this does not mean that woody plants pruned in the fall will necessarily suffer winter damage. &nbsp;

In most cases, I think we can get away with the adage of “prune whenever your pruners are sharp.” &nbsp;However, damage can occur if we have a sharp drop in temperature before plants are completely hardened off. &nbsp;Also, marginally hardy plants are more susceptible to winter damage, especially if pruned in the fall. &nbsp;Though light pruning and removal of dead wood are fine this time of year, you may want to delay severe pruning until spring.

Consider pruning to be “light” if 10% or less of the plant is removed. Deadwood does not count in this calculation. &nbsp;Keep in mind that even light pruning of spring-blooming shrubs such as lilac and forsythia will reduce flowers for next year. We normally recommend that spring-bloomers be pruned after flowering.​Shrubs differ in how severely they can be cut back. Junipers do not break buds from within the plant and therefore should be trimmed lightly if you wish to keep the full shape. Overgrown junipers should be removed. On the other hand, there are certain shrubs that can be pruned back severely during the spring. 

Rejuvenation is the most severe type of pruning and may be used on multi-stem shrubs that have become too large with too many old branches to justify saving the younger canes. All stems are cut back to 3- to 5-inch stubs. This works well for spirea, forsythia, pyracantha, ninebark, Russian almond, sweet mock orange, shrub roses, and flowering quince. WALZ: ​Pruning trees and shrubs in the fall

The&nbsp;state’s driver's&nbsp;license&nbsp;bureau will soon be moving out of the Barton County Courthouse. It has been located on the second floor of the courthouse&nbsp;since 2004 when the county agreed to rent the space to the Kansas Department of Revenue which operates the bureau.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Barton County Commission agreed&nbsp;at their weekly meeting&nbsp;on Tuesday to send a letter of termination to the Department of Revenue&nbsp;notifying that agency that the current contract will end in six months.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commission Chairman Jim Daily&nbsp;said&nbsp;the county has another location that the state can use to issue driver’s licenses.&nbsp;

“It’s not like we’re just&nbsp;throwing them to the curb,” Daily commented. “We have offered them another space in a building that the county owns&nbsp;that is offsite from the courthouse.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Daily was referring to the building that many people remember as&nbsp;Boogaart’s&nbsp;Grocery Store. It is owned by the county and currently houses&nbsp;the Cottonwood Extension District offices at 1800 12th&nbsp;Street.&nbsp;That agency&nbsp;will soon be moving to a new location on west 10th&nbsp;Street in Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commissioner&nbsp;Barb&nbsp;Esfeld&nbsp;told Eagle Radio&nbsp;what the county&nbsp;may do with the space now occupied by the driver’s license bureau.&nbsp;

"We would like to use it for our Treasurer’s&nbsp;Office.&nbsp;They’ve outgrown that area with their work,”&nbsp;Esfeld&nbsp;said. “And&nbsp;the other two uses that we are looking into are the County Clerk’s office during elections...they always need more room...and then the County Appraiser’s Office when they hold their hearings, they could use more room.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The county currently collects between $20,000 and $24,000 per year for renting the courthouse space to the Department of Revenue. It’s expected the county would receive the same amount&nbsp;if the state chooses to move to&nbsp;the 12th&nbsp;Street&nbsp;building.&nbsp;

Esfeld&nbsp;says the new location would be more user-friendly because it doesn’t have stairs and there is parking closer to the building.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Changes coming to Barton County Courthouse's 2nd floor

Many cattle operations rely on some type of harvested feed to use in the winter months and common among those sources is forage sorghum, millets, sorghum-sudangrass, and sudan. Forages in the sorghum family are prone to two different problems for feeding cattle, nitrate poisoning and prussic acid (hydrocyanic acid, HCN) poisoning. Millet (proso and pearl) do not contain prussic acid but can have nitrates. Prussic acid and nitrate poisoning are easy to get confused because both result in a lack of oxygen availability to the animal and are more likely to occur when the plant is stressed (fertility, hail, drought).

In dry areas of the state, cattle may be removed from pasture early. Bringing hungry cattle into pens with weeds can be very dangerous as the nitrate concentration may be elevated throughout the plant and animal intake high. Manure in corrals can contribute to the elevation of nitrates in the weeds. Elevated nitrates may not result in death but could cause abortions.&nbsp;

Elevated nitrates may not result in death but could cause abortions.&nbsp;The current KSU forage fact sheet on prussic acid poisoning indicates that prussic acid potential dissipates as the forage dries. Additionally, hay or silage that likely contained high cyanide concentrations at harvest should be analyzed before it is fed. This second statement is often forgotten and it’s assumed that when the plant dries, all the cells are ruptured and any HCN is released. To confirm this, we measured dhurrin content in sorghum hay in a study last year. The dhurrin content was stable from 1 to 10 weeks of dry storage. In the plant, dhurrin (the precursor to HCN in sorghum species) and the enzyme that converts it to cyanide, are stored in separate compartments within the cell. When the plant is eaten, the compartments are ruptured, and the cyanide formed and released. Measurement of dhurrin directly is used in some research studies. However, commercial labs do not typically measure dhurrin directly. Rather the procedure includes something to stimulate cyanide release. If hay is made from forages in the sorghum family or other susceptible species, testing for prussic acid in forage that has suffered from drought, hail or fertility issues is advised.
