DOUGLAS COUNTY —A Kansas man is going to prison for a sex crime.

Last week,  Romeo Martinez, 23, of Lawrence, was sentenced to 66 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for the sexually motivated aggravated battery of a then 21-year-old woman, according to  Douglas County District Attorney  Suzanne Valdez.

“The survivor did not let fear keep them from seeking justice,” District Attorney Valdez said.

Judge Stacey Donovan made the special finding that the offense was sexually motivated. Martinez, who pleaded no contest in May also was sentenced to 36 months post-release supervision. Martinez must register as a sex offender for 15 years.

Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on December 5, 2022, when Martinez battered the Lawrence woman at her home.
