With All-Star catcher Salvador Perez already on the injured list with Covid-19, the Royals took another hit at the position with Saturday's announcement that Cam Gallagher had tested positive for the virus.
Gallagher, who homered in Friday night’s intrasquad game, was placed on the 10-day injured list. Perez and Meibrys Viloria, who was placed on the 10-day IL for an undislosed ailment, were placed on IL last weekend.
According to MLB.com Royals reporter Jeffrey Flanagan, The Royals are running out of bodies to put behind the dish. They added non-roster catchers Oscar Hernández, Allan de San Miguel and Freddy Fermin in the past week to have enough backstops to get through Summer Camp.
Opening day is less than two weeks away as Kansas City is scheduled to open the season in Cleveland on Friday, July 24.
