“I don’t see the Western Athletic Conference just dropping sports.”
Those are the words from Great Bend High School Activities Director David Meter who was a guest Friday, Aug. 21 on Sports Day on 1590 KVGB & 95.5 FM.
Meter says the high school sports landscape changes every day as schools and conferences from Wichita, Topeka and the Kansas City areas have suspended fall athletics due to COVID-19 concerns.
As of now, the football schedule for Great Bend High School remains
intact.
With the Greater Wichita Athletic League suspending fall sports, many WAC schools
were left with holes in their schedule. Great Bend does have a home game
against Kapuan Mount Carmel in week four. Kapaun competes in the GWAL, but
being a private school has chosen to continue with competition.
As far as attendance is concerned, Meter mentions
the district is looking at different scenarios but the decision will ultimately
come down to the direction of the Barton County Health Department.
"We will probably have the band standing up near one of the endzones so our student body can spread out," said Meter. "We're talking about what you do with reserved tickets and how you do that fairly."
Great Bend opens the season Sept. 4 at Maize South with the
first home game Sept. 11 against Hays.
