Kansas officer attacked by dog during shooting investigation

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a shooting have shot and killed a dog.

Just after 5:30 a.m. Friday, police were dispatched to a Topeka hospital for a male victim who had arrived with a non-life threating gunshot injury, according to Lt. Manual Munoz.

Officers determined that the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute that had taken place at 103 SE Market in Topeka. 

Officers went to the address on SE Market for further investigation.

Once officers arrived at the residence, officers at the front of the case address observed a window that was wide open. As other officers were going to the rear of the residence, a dog jumped out the window that was open. The dog charged and bit one of the officers, according to Munoz.

As a result, the officer discharged his department issued firearm, striking the dog. The dog died at the scene.

The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of for his injuries.

Police released no additional details Friday afternoon.
