UNDATED (AP) — The Associated Press has released its men's All-America team and it is dominated by Gonzaga and Baylor. Both teams were atop the rankings most of the season. Gonzaga's Corey Kispert and Butler's Jared Butler are on the first team. They are joined by unanimous pick Luka Garza of Iowa, Ayo Dosunmu of Illinois and dynamic freshman Cade Cunningham of Oklahoma State. Gonzaga's Drew Timme and Jalen Suggs are also second-team All-Americans. Baylor's Davion Mitchell made the third team.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Six officials won’t be working the NCAA Tournament after one tested positive for COVID-19. The other five were deemed close contacts after arriving in Indianapolis. NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt says there are enough officials available for the tournament that begins Thursday and ramps up over the weekend. Gavitt says there have been five positive results out of 2,300 overall completed tests so far. He cautioned those positives didn’t necessarily involve team personnel. Georgia Tech reported a positive test, but did not provide specifics.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — There has never been a better time to have senior leadership in the NCAA Tournament than this season. There was no real offseason for young players to improve. No exhibitions and fewer non-conference games for teams to come together. And the shadow cast by COVID-19 that threatened to derail a season with a single positive test. So while experienced teams always have an edge during March Madness, those with seniors running the show may be at an even bigger advantage this year. Iowa star Luka Garza and Gonzaga counterpart Corey Kispert already are household names worth watching, but there are plenty of other seniors that should threaten to steal the spotlight.
UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard anticipates a quick search to find a new men’s basketball coach after the firing of Steve Prohm. Pollard released a 10-minute video in which he discusses the reasons for letting Prohm go and the course forward. Iowa State was 2-22 overall and 0-18 in Big 12 play. It was the lowest win total since 1924-25 and the first winless conference season since 1936-37. Pollard also knocked down speculation that a donor or group of donors volunteered to pay Prohm's $5 million buyout.
UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have gotten in the habit the past couple years of plugging their biggest holes by trading for big-name bats that just happen to have had a whole lot of success against them. Two years ago it was Paul Goldschmidt, and this past offseason it was Nolen Arenado. Now, those two sluggers are set to anchor a much more dangerous lineup and support a strong cast of starters and one of the best bullpens in baseball as the Cardinals seek take aim at the Chicago Cubs and the rest of the NL Central.
