SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of a child and have made an arrest.
Just before 6 p.m. Monday, police responded to a medical call at the Dillon’s fuel pumps located at 2010 SE 29th Street in Topeka.
Upon arrival, a 5-year-old child was being given life-saving measures by personnel from the Topeka Fire Department. The child was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
Investigators determined that circumstances around the death were suspicious and quickly identified a suspect. As a result of the investigation, police arrested 25-year-old Mickel W. Cherry, 25, Topeka, who is known to the victim.
Mickel is being held on requested charges of Murder in the 1st degree; In the commission of a felony, and rape; offender is 18 or older and victim is under the age of 14.
