ARLINGTON (AP) — There is a reason Steve Sarkisian is the third Texas head coach in eight seasons. There are bigger expectations for the Longhorns than top 10 rankings and bowl victories. Texas is still the last Big 12 team to win a national title, but that was 16 years ago. Baylor and Kansas State have both won the Big 12 twice since Texas had its last league title in 2009. Sarkisian says he is putting all his energy into what the Longhorns are doing now and not focusing on what happened before.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy says he is a more patient person. He was changed in part by a difficult summer last year. There was the passing of his mother, who he described as a soft-spoken and easygoing soul who had always told him to just relax. He also ran into problems last summer with his players who were focusing on racial injustice. They were upset with him being photographed wearing a T-shirt promoting a far-right news channel. Gundy, going into his 17th season as the Cowboys head coach, says he's better now at listening and thinking things through.

UNDATED (AP) — NCAA President Mark Emmert is suggesting it could be time for a decentralized and deregulated version of college sports. Emmert says a recent Supreme Court ruling against the NCAA along with lifting restrictions on athletes monetizing their fame are a catalyst. Emmert says he is not offering a mandate or even a recommendation. But he says the time is right to consider a collegiate model that puts fewer constraints on athletes and de-emphasizes the role of a national governing body.

KANSAS CITY, Kan, (AP) — Daryl Dike scored twice and helped force an own goal, helping the United States to overwhelm Martinique 6-1 and clinch a berth in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals. Miles Robinson, Gyasi Zardes and Nicholas Gioacchini also scored for the U.S., which started a lineup of players who have not been in coach Gregg Berhalter’s top-level player pool. Canada leads the U.S. on a total-goals tiebreaker going into their matchup Sunday, which will determine the Group B winner. Berhalter changed seven starters from last weekend’s opening 1-0 win over Haiti.

NEW YORK (AP) — Thursday's only Major League Baseball game had to be postponed after three New York Yankees pitchers tested positive for COVID-19. Jonathan Loaisiga (loh-AY’-sih-gah), Nestor Cortes Jr. and Wandy Peralta were the players who tested positive, and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he expects three other players to test positive. The Yankees were supposed to begin a four-game series with the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox Thursday, but the COVID-19 cases could postpone Friday's game as well.

SANDWICH, England (AP) — Louis Oosthuizen is the first-round leader at the British Open, one shot ahead of Jordan Spieth and Brian Harman. Oosthuizen opened with a 6-under 64, saving par from a fairway bunker on No. 18 to tie the Royal St. George’s record. The South African opened with seven straight pars and followed with six birdies in his next nine holes.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Friday’s Olympic men’s basketball tuneup between the United States and Australia in Las Vegas has been canceled due to health and safety protocols. The news followed word that Washington Wizards All-Star guard Bradley Beal would miss the Tokyo Games after being placed into health and safety protocols. USA forward Jerami Grant has also been placed in health and safety protocols.
