The Sunflower Seeds, a first year team in the Sunflower Collegiate League, was just the team the Great Bend Bat Cats needed to see to get their season jump started. The Bat Cats beat the Seeds 10-4 Sunday afternoon at Al Burns field to complete a four game sweep of the Wichita based team that helped push Great Bend near the top of the SCL standings.
Great Bend, who had won the previous three games of the series by scores of 23-8, 5-4 in 10-innings and 7-5, jumped out quickly Sunday, scoring three in the first and two more in the second for a 5-0 lead. After the Seeds made it 5-2 in the top of the third, the Bat Cats scored two more times in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead and cruised to their fifth straight win.
Alex Rogers and Chandler Bloomer each had three rbi's for Great Bend. Rogers hit two home runs, Bloomer hit one and Collin Meinert also went deep as Great Bend improved to 9-6 overall and 8-4 in the SCL.
The Bat Cats now get their shot at the first place Cheney Diamond Dawgs who remain unbeaten on the season and are 12-0 in SCL play. The two teams begin a four game series Tuesday night at Al Burns Field. They'll play again in Great Bend on Wednesday before completing the series in Cheney on Thursday and Friday night.
