KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals All-Star pitchers Cole Ragans and Seth Lugo were placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday.

Left-hander Ragans was moved to the list with a left groin strain and right-hander Lugo with a third finger sprain.

Lefties Noah Cameron and Evan Sisk were recalled from Triple-A Omaha in corresponding moves.

Cameron is slated to start for the Royals against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. It would be the second start of his career.

Ragans exited in the sixth inning of a 10-3 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday night with groin tightness. He had given up four runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings before exiting the game.

“The groin feels fine today, not as stiff as when I came out of the game last night,” Ragans said. “Just a couple of weeks of rest, continue throwing and get ready to go after the IL stint.”

The 2024 All-Star selection is 2-3 with a 4.53 ERA in nine starts this season. Ragans skipped a start on April 30 with a left groin strain.

“With Ragans, we didn’t know it was going to happen,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We were hoping that taking the one out of the rotation would help, but we are going to need to take a little more measures and have him out on the IL.”

Lugo, also a 2024 All-Star, has not pitched since May 11. He is 3-4 with a 3.02 ERA in nine starts this season.

“The finger feels better and has progressed pretty good so far,” Lugo said. “At this point of the season, it is better to get healthy and be 100% out there than try to push through.”

Lugo and Ragans finished second and fourth, respectively, in the American League Cy Young ballot last season. Lugo won an AL Gold Glove.

“We were hopeful we could be able to avoid (the injured list) with Lugo, but with the inflammation still there and essentially a sprained middle finger,” Quatraro said. “We just need to get him symptom-free before he can start throwing again.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jordan Walker homered and Miles Mikolas pitched six sharp innings to lead the surging St. Louis Cardinals past the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Saturday night.

Mikolas (3-2) allowed two hits with four strikeouts and two walks for the Cardinals, who have won three straight and 12 of 13. St. Louis is 7-1 on a nine-game trip to three cities, winning all three series.

Walker connected leading off sixth. Iván Herrera’s two-out single in the fifth was the only other hit for the Cardinals.

Kyle Leahy permitted two hits in two innings of relief and Ryan Helsley finished the four-hitter for his ninth save.

Hard-luck loser Noah Cameron (1-1) went 6 1/3 innings in his second major league start. The 25-year-old left-hander from St. Joseph, Missouri, became the first pitcher to begin his career with consecutive starts of 6 1/3 or more innings without giving up more than two hits in either one.

Kansas City stranded five runners and has been held to four or fewer runs in seven of the last eight games. The Royals have scored four or more 38 times this season, second-most in the majors.

Walker hit a 422-foot shot to left field for his third homer of the season. He began the night batting .186.

St. Louis has its first seven-win road trip since 2021. ... The Royals have lost four in a row, and six of seven since a seven-game winning streak from May 3-9.

Cardinals LHP Matthew Liberatore (3-3, 3.11 ERA) faces RHP Michael Wacha (3-4, 2.96) in the series finale Sunday.

Willson Contreras doubled twice and drove in a run for the Cardinals, who have won 11 of 12. The Royals have dropped five of six since a seven-game winning streak.

Contreras doubled and scored on a two-out wild pitch by Cole Ragans (2-3) in the second. Brendan Donovan doubled leading off the fourth and scored on a one-out double by Contreras for a two-run lead. Herrera singled in Contreras to make it 3-0.

Vinnie Pasquantino homered in the fourth against Pallante (4-2). Kyle Isbel tripled in the fifth and scored on a balk.

Pallante threw 100 pitches. He gave up seven hits, struck out four and walked none.

Ragans surrendered four runs on five hits in five innings with seven strikeouts. Four Kansas City relievers combined to allow six runs on eight hits.

Herrera doubled and scored on an infield single by Jordan Walker in the eighth.

Ragans departed after a leadoff single by Masyn Winn in the sixth, and Brendan Donovan greeted John Schreiber with a single. Contreras reached on an error by second baseman Jonathan India. Herrera cleared the bases with a double before scoring on a single by Pedro Pagés.

The Cardinals lead the all-time series 80-56, including a 49-26 record at Kauffman Stadium.

Missouri's governor said Friday that he will call the Legislature into a special session to consider incentives aimed at keeping the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals from moving to Kansas after lawmakers failed to pass a plan during their regular, annual session.

Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe wants his state to help with a renovated or new stadium for pro football's Chiefs and with a new home venue for baseball's Royals. A Kansas law enacted last year authorizes state bonds for 70% of the cost of a new stadium, paying them off over 30 years with revenues from sports betting, Kansas Lottery ticket sales, and new sales and alcohol taxes.

The GOP-controlled Missouri House approved a Kehoe-backed bill Tuesday that would have allowed the state to issue bonds for up to half the cost of the stadium projects and allow tax credits of up to $50 million. But the Republican-controlled Senate abruptly ended its regular-session work Wednesday after a contentious fight over an anti-abortion measure, without taking up the stadium financing measure.

At least a few Kansas and Missouri lawmakers from both parties are skeptical of state incentives. Many economists contend that public funding for stadiums isn’t worth it, because sports tend to divert discretionary spending away from other forms of entertainment rather than generate new income.

Shohei Ohtani had quite a game on his bobblehead night. Two home
runs, six runs. Then Jhonny Pereda struck out him out. The Athletics’
backup catcher faced Ohtani in the eighth inning Thursday night.
Pereda gave up three straight hits against the bottom of the Dodgers’
order. With Los Angeles leading 17-2, Ohtani came up with a chance to
pile on. Pereda’s first four pitches were between 62 and 68 mph.
Ohtani took a called first strike and fouled off the another pitch.
Then Perada threw an 89-mph fastball. Ohtani’s foul tip was caught
and one of the major leagues’ home-run leaders went down swinging.

school promoted Santiago to replace longtime athletic director Tom
Holmoe on Tuesday, elevating him from deputy athletic director. More
than 50 candidates were interviewed for the position before BYU
decided to promote from within the athletic department. Santiago
served as BYU’s deputy athletic director since 2017 after spending
the previous nine years as a senior associate athletic director. He
started at BYU as an assistant basketball coach under Steve Cleveland
in 1997 before moving into athletic administration.

Texas Tech pitcher NiJaree Canady left Stanford to sign an NIL deal

Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs will be featured in at least eight stand-alone games during the upcoming NFL season.

Their Super Bowl rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles won’t be one of them.

The teams will meet Week 2 in Kansas City in the late afternoon game on Fox.

Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Eagles dominated the Chiefs 40-22 to capture their second Vince Lombardi Trophy in February. Philadelphia is getting seven stand-alone games.

There won’t be a long wait for a Josh Allen-Lamar Jackson showdown. Allen and the Buffalo Bills visit Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1 on “Sunday Night Football.” Allen edged Jackson for the NFL MVP award last season while Jackson was the AP’s first-team All-Pro quarterback.

No waiting for Aaron Rodgers to face his former team if he does end up signing with Pittsburgh. The Steelers will visit the New York Jets — who now have former Pittsburgh quarterback Justin Fields — in Week 1.

After the Eagles raise their championship banner, they’ll kick off the league’s season against the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 4. The Chiefs will take on the Los Angeles Chargers in the league’s second game in Brazil, on Sept. 5 at Corinthians Stadium in Sao Paulo.

The Chiefs are visiting Dallas on Thanksgiving Day and hosting the Denver Broncos on Christmas night. Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons and the Cowboys also will play on both holidays. They’ll visit Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders to kick off a tripleheader on Christmas.

The Chiefs are scheduled for three games on Sunday night: at the New York Giants in Week 3; vs. the Detroit Lions on Oct. 12; vs. the Houston Texans on Dec. 7. Kansas City has two Monday night games in the same month: at the Jacksonville Jaguars on Oct. 6 and vs. the Commanders on Oct. 27.

All of those prime-time games give Taylor Swift more opportunities to share the NFL spotlight. The 14-time Grammy Award-winning superstar has been dating Kelce since the 2023 season.

The Chiefs-Bills AFC championship rematch will be in Buffalo on Nov. 2. The NFC championship rematch between the Eagles and Commanders will take place in Washington on Saturday, Dec. 20. The teams meet again two weeks later in Week 18.

Netflix, which is streaming the first two games of a Christmas triple-header, announced earlier that the Lions will face the Vikings in Minnesota in the late afternoon game.

Six of the record seven international contests were announced Tuesday.

The Vikings are playing consecutive games in Ireland and Britain, facing the Pittsburgh Steelers at Croke Park in Dublin on Sept. 28 in Ireland’s first NFL regular-season game. The Minnesota Vikings get a double dip of international play in 2025 with trips to both Ireland and Britain as the NFL features a record seven overseas kickoffs this season, including forays into Germany and Spain.

The Vikings will play the Pittsburgh Steelers at Croke Park in Dublin on Sept. 28 in Ireland’s first NFL regular season game, and then they’ll fly over to London to face the Cleveland Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium a week later on Oct. 5.

“Our experiences in London have always been memorable, so to return in 2025 as the first team to play in back-to-back international games in different countries was something we could not pass up,” Vikings owner Mark Wilf said.

The Vikings are 8-0 in international games, including 4-0 in the regular season. The Vikings and Browns also played in London in 2017, the last time the Vikings were scheduled to visit Cleveland. That means they’re going to go 24 years between trips to Cleveland, with the next one in 2033.

The matchups were revealed on Tuesday by the NFL as part of a series of announcements of notable games on each of the league’s broadcasters ahead of the full schedule release on Wednesday night.

That’s also when the league will announce the Los Angeles Chargers’ opponent for its first international game of the season in Brazil, on Sept. 5 at Corinthians Stadium in Sao Paulo. That’s where the Philadelphia Eagles began their Super Bowl quest last year with a game against the Green Bay Packers on opening weekend.

The Brazilian game will be streamed for free to a worldwide audience exclusively on YouTube and YouTube TV, marking the platform’s debut as a live NFL broadcaster. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and YouTube chief business officer Mary Ellen Coe will announce the Chargers’ opponent Wednesday at YouTube’s 2025 Brandcast upfront event at Lincoln Center in New York.

YouTube and the NFL also announced a multi-year deal for the annual Super Bowl flag football game featuring creators and artists with additional international contests following the success of the inaugural game in February that drew more than 6 million live views.

In other international games, the Denver Broncos visit the New York Jets on Oct. 12 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London; the Los Angeles Rams visit the Jacksonville Jaguars a week later at Wembley Stadium in London; the Atlanta Falcons visit the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 9 at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin; and the Washington Commanders visit the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 16 at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.

This marks the 14th game in London for the Jaguars, as part of the team’s multi-year commitment to playing games in Britain. Overall, the NFL has played 39 regular season games in London.

The six international matchups that were announced will all be on NFL Network and streamed on NFL+.

The Colts-Falcons game in Berlin is the fifth regular season NFL game in Germany. Previous games have been played in Munich and Frankfurt.

Also Tuesday, the NFL revealed on “Good Morning America” that the Super Bowl champion Eagles will play the Packers in Green Bay on Monday Night Football on Nov. 10. The rest of the MNF lineup will be announced Wednesday.

The Royals signed the 45-year-old left-hander to a minor league deal Tuesday, and he will report soon to the club's spring training facility in Surprise, Arizona. Once he gets up to speed, Hill likely will head to Triple-A Omaha and try to prove he can still help a major league ballclub with designs on contending for the postseason.

Kansas City entered Tuesday night's game in Houston tied for second in the AL Central.

“I love Rich,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “I was with him for a year in Tampa. It’s remarkable that he’s still pitching, that he still has the drive to want to do it and go to Triple-A and continue to compete. That’s one thing that stands out about him is he is the ultimate competitor. Nobody wants to win more than that guy. Nobody’s more fiery than he is. So, I think it’s tremendous that he still has that drive and he can continue to compete.”

Hill made his big league debut with the Cubs in 2005, and he has made 248 starts and appeared in 386 games over the past two decades. He has a 4.01 ERA with 1,428 strikeouts while pitching for 13 different franchises; the Royals would be the 14th should he get called up, joining Edwin Jackson as the only players to play for that many clubs.

Hill made four appearances out of the Red Sox bullpen last season before he was designated for assignment in September. His best season was in 2016, when he went 12-5 with a 2.12 ERA while pitching for the Athletics and the Dodgers.

Royals sign veteran Rich Hill to a minor league deal

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri House on Tuesday endorsed a new framework of financial incentives to try to keep the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals from possibly leaving the state by helping fund new or renovated stadiums for them.

The legislation, which has the backing of Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe, would authorize the state to issue bonds valued at up to half the cost of the stadium projects and allow tax credits of up to $50 million. But the plan doesn't list a total cost or a location for the stadiums, leaving those details to be negotiated later.

Missouri lawmakers are scrambling to try to counter an offer from neighboring Kansas, which authorized its own package of incentives last year after voters in Jackson County, Missouri, turned down a sales tax extension that would have helped finance a $2 billion ballpark district for the Royals in downtown Kansas City and an $800 million renovation of the Chiefs' Arrowhead Stadium.

The clock is ticking for Missouri lawmakers. The state Senate would still need to approve the plan before a Friday deadline to wrap up work in the annual legislative session.

But the legislation encountered immediate resistance when it was brought up later Tuesday in Senate. Republican state Sen. Mary Elizabeth Coleman denounced it as “special interests for billionaires” and foreshadowed a lengthy debate that ended without a vote Tuesday night.

The Chiefs and Royals have played for more than 50 years in side-by-side football and baseball stadiums built in eastern Kansas City, drawing fans from both states in the split metropolitan area. Their stadium leases run until 2031, but Royals owner John Sherman has said the team won’t play at Kauffman Stadium beyond the 2030 season.

Kansas amended its laws last year to allow bonds that would cover up to 70% of the costs of new stadiums for the Chiefs and Royals.

Materials distributed Tuesday by the Missouri governor's office said, “Kansas is aggressively negotiating with both teams.” Some lawmakers said they felt pressure to act now or potentially miss their chance to retain teams that generate thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of tax revenue annually.

“I can't imagine the economic landscape without the Chiefs and the Royals in Missouri," said Republican state Rep. Chris Brown, of Kansas City, who presented the plan to colleagues. But more than that, “the Chiefs and the Royals literally are a part of us to some degree, they are a fabric woven within the state of Missouri.”

A provision in Missouri's legislation would require team owners to repay the state if they relocate to another state before the end of the financing agreement.

Missouri has experience with losing professional sports teams. The National Football League’s Rams were the most recent to depart, leaving a publicly financed domed stadium that had lured the team to St. Louis to return to a gleaming new stadium in Los Angeles that opened in 2020.

But many economists contend that public funding for stadiums isn’t worth it, because sports tend to divert discretionary spending away from other forms of entertainment rather than generate new income.

State Rep. Del Taylor, a Democrat from St. Louis, denounced “fearmongering” suggestions that the Chiefs and Royals might also leave, calling it “unfair” and “conniving” to come to lawmakers with a plan so late in the session.

“I don’t like making decisions because someone has put my back against the wall,” Taylor said.

HOUSTON (AP) — Isaac Paredes hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the ninth inning to lift the Houston Astros to a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

The game was tied at 1 after a home run by Jeremy Peña in the sixth inning when Paredes led off the bottom of the ninth against John Schreiber (1-2). He sent his second pitch to left-center field for his fifth homer this season, giving Houston the win after Kansas City took the series opener Monday.

Both teams got strong outings from their starters. Houston’s Framber Valdez allowed six hits and a run with seven strikeouts in eight innings. Kris Bubic yielded six hits and a run and tied a career high with nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
