CINCINNATI (AP) — Thousands of fans streamed into Great American Ball Park despite steady rain on Sunday to pay respects to Pete Rose, baseball's career hits leader, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-rose-obituary-reds-e0f3dfa057fc46629447e04b6540e4c8">died Sept. 30 at the age of 83</a>.

The 14-hour visitation, in honor of Rose's jersey number, was arranged by the Cincinnati Reds with cooperation from Rose's daughters, Fawn and Kara, who exchanged hugs, stories and even some tears with fans.

“We wanted to do something like this,” said Rick Walls, executive director of the Reds Hall of Fame. “You could see from the turnout, it means a lot to the people here. It’s a moving experience.”

Rose, known as Charlie Hustle for his unbridled passion for the game, was the engine behind Cincinnati's Big Red Machine clubs that won back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and '76.

A 17-time All-Star, the switch-hitting Rose played on three World Series winners. He was the National League MVP in 1973 and World Series MVP two years later. He holds the major league record for games played (3,562) and plate appearances (15,890). But no milestone approached his 4,256 hits, breaking his hero Ty Cobb’s 4,191.

Rose agreed to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rose-hall-of-fame-d3da8832097f2717590096d68600fee4">a permanent ban from Major League Baseball</a>&nbsp;in 1989 following an investigation by MLB that determined he bet on Reds games from 1985-87 while playing for and managing the team. Two years later, the Hall of Fame barred players on the permanent ineligible list from the Hall ballot.

Despite his indiscretions away from the diamond, fans arrived as early as 4 a.m. Sunday to honor Rose, slowly passing by an urn containing his ashes and a table displaying his bright red Reds Hall of Fame induction suit jacket and other memorabilia while a highlight video of his illustrious career played on the concourse video boards.

Fans left flowers and other mementos at the Rose statue located just outside the main entrance to the ballpark.

“He was a guy you thought was going to live forever,” longtime Reds fan Bob Augspurger said. “When I heard the news, obviously it was sad. Baseball lost its greatest ambassador.”

Fawn Rose said in a statement, “We are deeply moved by the overwhelming love and support from the people of Cincinnati, the entire baseball community, and fans across the world as we mourn the loss of our beloved Dad, Grandpa, and Brother, Pete Rose."

The Reds plan to honor Rose on “Pete Rose Day” when they play the Chicago White Sox on May 14 with first pitch planned for 7:14 p.m., also in homage to his No. 14.

HOUSTON (AP) — Nothing was going right for Detroit’s Jared Goff on Sunday night against the Houston Texans. The nine-year veteran threw a career-high five interceptions through three quarters and the Lions trailed by 10 points. Instead of wallowing in his mistakes, Goff rallied the Lions to an improbable 26-23 win that was capped by a 52-yard field goal by Jake Bates as time expired. “I had some unfortunate things early, but I’ve been through a whole lot worse than that,” Goff said. “Mentally, I’ve been to the bottom. Some unlucky plays aren’t going to throw me off my game.” The Lions improved to 8-1 for the first time since 1954 with their seventh straight victory overall and fifth in a row on the road. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — CeeDee Lamb was unhappy about losing a ball in the sun on an incompletion that helped keep Dallas from scoring a go-ahead touchdown in the first half of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cowboys-eagles-score-4b5c6d77d0629b63e0fd7aba0a399921">34-6 loss to Philadelphia</a>&nbsp;on Sunday. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have won just about every way imaginable during a perfect 15-game run that dates to last season: Patrick Mahomes leading last-second touchdown drives, their defense making a stand, and Harrison Butker kicking game-winning field goals.

They added a walk-off block to the list against the Broncos on Sunday.

“It's a complete shock, you know? Not much I can say about it," Chenal said. “I was really praying for something to happen. That moment is so heavy. There's a second on the clock, they're going to kick a field goal and you feel the weight of the moment.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid indicated they took advantage of something they had seen in the Broncos' field-goal operation.

“We did,” Reid said, “but it's also something we work on like crazy. It normally doesn't work quite like that one.”

The Chiefs had taken the lead on Butker's field goal with 5:57 remaining, but Bo Nix and the Broncos converted a trio of third downs while marching right back down the field. They proceeded to set up Lutz for the winner, but Chenal came up the middle amid a big push by the Kansas City defensive line to get his hand on the kick.

The ball squibbed away toward the Denver sideline as the Chiefs rushed onto the field to celebrate.

“I felt like we outplayed them but we didn't finish,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said. “That one will take a while. It'll sting.”

Mahomes finished with 266 yards passing and a touchdown for the Chiefs, who became only the fifth Super Bowl champion to win its first nine games the next season. That also matches the best start to a season in franchise history, and their 15-game win streak dating to last season is the longest in the NFL since the Packers won 19 in a row from 2010-11.

Travis Kelce had eight catches for 64 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City. DeAndre Hopkins caught four passes for 56 yards, and Kareem Hunt was held to 35 yards rushing but also caught seven passes for 65 yards.

“Any way you win is good in this league,” Mahomes said. “You live for these moments. When you grow up playing football, you live for the walk-off whatever-it-is. And I'm glad we get to experience it together.”

Nix finished with 215 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Broncos (5-5). Courtland Sutton had six catches for 60 yards and a score. And their 13-yard hookup on third-and-6 with 1:45 left is what gave&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1855715047949193510">Denver a chance to kick as time expired</a>.

“They just made one extra play. When we thought it was in our hands, it wasn't,” Nix said. “It's tough. And again, it's two good football teams out there playing against each other, and one day it will go our way.”

The Broncos stunned the Chiefs a year ago, forcing five turnovers in a 21-9 win at Denver that ended a 16-game losing streak in the series. And they clearly had the same intention in mind as the AFC West rivals met again Sunday.

Their defense harassed Mahomes throughout the first half, particularly when an injury to Wanya Morris forced rookie left tackle Kingsley Suamataia into the game. And the Broncos capitalized on offense with two long scoring drives, the first ending with Nix finding Devaughn Vele wide open and the second with Sutton's 32-yard TD catch for a 14-3 lead.

It was Mahomes who got the Chiefs on track, going 7 for 7 for 62 yards on the ensuing drive. When it looked as if it had stalled at the Denver 2, Reid went against his conservative nature on fourth down, and Mahomes hit Kelce for the score.

The Chiefs still trailed 14-10 at the break, meaning they had Denver right where they wanted them.

Unflappable in winning its last eight games when trailing in the second half, Kansas City closed within 14-13 on Butker's chip-shot field goal late in the third quarter. The Chiefs defense then forced back-to-back punts, and Mahomes and the offense drove to the Denver 2, where Butker added the go-ahead kick with just under six minutes remaining.

Plenty of time for the Broncos to drive down the field. Not enough time for them to win.

“I told our team I was proud of the way they fought. I thought we outplayed them," Payton said. “But nonetheless, you have to beat a champion and we weren't able to do it, so obviously gut-wrenching.”

Chiefs block Broncos' potential winner as time expires, hold on for 16-14 win

The No. 7 Cougar volleyball team missed the national tournament by a single match last year. This season, second-year coach Megan Besecker stacked the schedule to shore up Barton's resume just in case. With a 30-2 record entering Sunday afternoon's Region VI/Plains District Volleyball Championship against No. 10 Colby, Barton was likely already into the national tournament, win or lose. But the Cougars avenged an earlier loss to secure their spot at nationals 25-21, 26-24, 26-16.

"I know we would have made it through, but our goal is to get the highest seed we possibly can," Besecker said. "Also, Colby was our only home loss this year and one of our goals was to be undefeated at home. We needed some revenge."

Barton led for most of the first set and trailed early in the second before pulling ahead 9-8 on a kill from Barton County-native Kassidy Nixon and sophomore Mya Thompson. The Cougars went on to lead 20-16 before the Trojans stormed back. Nixon, freshman Aubrey Olander, and sophomore Naya Danenberg each put down kills to keep the lead at 24-22. 

But Colby would not go away, tying the match at 24 to force extra play. Sophomore Anna Wiezbicki answered with a kill. In complete team play on both sides, Danenberg saved a point with a big dig that ultimately resulted in a Nixon kill and the set for Barton at 26-24.

"That second set is hard," Besecker said. "That's a big momentum swing. Yes, it's only two points, but also, that last rally to win the set, it's really hard to come back from if you're on the losing side of that. I think it's important we finished that rally out and went up 2-0. I think that helped a lot in the third.'

Barton carried all the momentum into the third set to build a 6-0 lead. Back-to-back aces from Wierzbicki kept the gap at 11-3, and the Cougars eventually led by 10 points at 14-4. Colby got as close as 21-15 late but the next Trojan serve sailed past the end line. Olander followed with a block, then sophomore Phoebe Reyes put down a kill for match point at 24-16. Danenberg finished off the Trojans her final kill at the Kirkman Center.

"It's amazing," she said. "We are a great team. We worked so hard to do that. Each person came back and just wanted to win."

Besecker has coached the Cougars to a 56-8 record in her first two seasons with the school. She takes an experienced squad to the national tournament, set for Nov. 20-23 at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn.

"We do have a lot of sophomores that felt the loss last year in the region tournament," she said. "I think that fueled the fire a little bit, too. They knew what was at stake and they were super focused this week and today. Everyone played a really big part in this win. We spread the ball out really well. The bench was great. It was a great win for the team."

Barton has proven it can play with the best in the nation, beating squads like Indian Hills and Western Nebraska, ranked No. 10 and 17 nationally at the time, and picking up two of three matches against No. 10 Colby. Barton's other loss came against Osessa College, ranked No. 13 nationally when the teams met in September.

"We know we're going to face tough teams we haven't faced before but we're confident in ourselves and what we can bring," Danenberg said. "We're going to bring our best. We're a good team."

Additionally, he will be issued a $40,000 fine.&nbsp;Harlan has been informed that a repeat of such behavior will result in a more serious penalty.“Mark’s comments irresponsibly challenged the professionalism of our officials and the integrity of the Big 12 Conference,” said Commissioner Brett Yormark. 

“There is a right way and a wrong way to voice concerns. Unfortunately, Mark chose the wrong way. Accordingly, this violation warrants a public reprimand and financial penalty. The Big 12 Conference prioritizes professionalism, integrity, and fairness, and will continue to do so.”The Big 12 Conference will have no further comment on this issue.

The Barton Community College wrestling team opened its dual season Friday afternoon going 1-3 at the Loosbrook Duals held at the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium in Atchison, Kansas.

Four different Cougars secured multiple wins over the day led behind sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2024-25/bios/mader_jarret_ixfh">Jarret Mader</a>'s (149-division) 3-1 performance while&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2024-25/bios/garrett_jamal_dw5v">Jamal Garrett</a>&nbsp;(125-division),&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2024-25/bios/duarte_quiroz_edgar_hm9y">Edgar Duarte Quiroz</a>&nbsp;(184-division), and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2024-25/bios/agudzi-addo_nathan_04nx">Nathan Agudzi-Addo</a>&nbsp;(285-division) each providing a pair of victories.

Next up for the Cougars is Saturday's 9:00 a.m. Service Salute Open to conclude the final leg of a two-day stay in Atchison, Kansas.

Barton surrendered 12 points in each of its four duals, forfeiting open weight classes in the 157, and 197 divisions.

The Cougars opened the competition against NAIA foe William Woods Community College earning five victories in the 10 matches edging out the Owls on the scoreboard 29-27. Barton's wins came from Mader's (149-division) 21-2 tech fall, Agudzi-Addo (285-division) 39-second pin, and trio of forfeit wins by Garrett (125-division),&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2024-25/bios/almanza_joshua_-aj-_xep8">Joshua "AJ" Almanza</a>&nbsp;(133-division), and Duarte Quiroz (184-division).

Falling 52-0 to Division II opponent Quincy University, Barton came back in the third match of the afternoon dropping a 42-9 decision to four-year Hastings College.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2024-25/bios/boles_ethan_4s2l">Ethan Boles</a>&nbsp;(141-division) and Mader (149-division) mended the lone Cougar victories with a 5:33 fall and 10-5 decision respectfully.

The Barton Community College women's basketball team turned a six-point second half deficit into a nineteen-point 91-72 victory Saturday over the junior varsity squad from Bethany College in the BSN Tip-Off Classic opening game at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

A Bethany trey at the buzzer gave the Swedes a first quarter lead before canning their fifth triple of the opening twenty within a 6-0 spurt to lead by three at the halftime break.

Canning another coming out of the locker room, the Swedes put Barton in a six-point early third quarter hole but the Cougars responded outscoring them by eight points the rest of the frame.

Gaining all the momentum and finding their stride, Barton went on to score 31 of their 54 second half points in the final frame, building out a twenty-two point margin in coasting to the win.

The Cougars' first victory of the year moves to 1-2 on the young season, looking to notch its second on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. tip versus Tabor College junior varsity.

Shaking off a slow start, once the 7th ranked Barton Community College volleyball team got heated up it was lights out for Garden City Community College as the Cougars rolled to a straight set victory (25-19, 25-21, 25-15) in the semifinal round of the Region 6/Plains District Tournament.

The Cougars avenge last season's upset loss in the same round, now advancing to Sunday's 2:00 p.m. title match against 10th ranked Colby Community College as the Trojans defeated Dodge City Community College in a hard-fought comeback 3-1 victory (18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 27-25) in the later evening semifinal.

Barton improves to 30-2, meeting up with the now 26-3 Trojans in a rubber match of the season's meetings with an automatic NJCAA Division I Tournament bid additionally awarded to the winner.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Devin Neal ran for 116 yards and two scores and became Kansas' all-time leader in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in a 45-36 win over No. 17 Iowa State at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday.

Neal broke June Henley's rushing record with a 14-yard run on his first carry and now has 3,951. Neal's touchdown runs of 13 and 10 yards gave him 43, breaking Henlsey's mark of 41.

Jalon Daniels finished 12 of 24 for 295 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas (3-6, 2-4 Big 12).

Rocco Becht was 24 of 37 for 383 yards and three touchdowns for Iowa State (7-2, 4-2, No. 17 CFP), which has lost two straight after a 7-0 start.

Neal's second touchdown of the game put Kansas up 38-13 in the third quarter.

2nd ranked Barton men come out firing cruising to century mark season opener

Bobby Allison, founder of racing’s “Alabama Gang” and a NASCAR Hall of Famer, died Saturday. He was 86.

NASCAR released a statement from Allison’s family that said he died at home in Mooresville, North Carolina. A cause of death wasn’t given, but Allison had been in declining health for years.

Allison moved to fourth on NASCAR’s Cup Series victory list last month when chairman Jim France recognized him as the winner of the Meyers Brothers Memorial at Bowman Gray Stadium in North Carolina in 1971. The sanctioning body updated its record books to reflect the decision, giving Allison 85 wins and moving him out of a tie with Darrell Waltrip.

France and longtime NASCAR executive Mike Helton presented Allison with a plaque commemorating the victory. With it, Allison trails only fellow Hall of Famers Richard Petty (200), David Pearson (105) and Jeff Gordon (93) in Cup wins.

Allison was inducted into NASCAR’s second Hall of Fame class, in 2011. He was the 1983 NASCAR champion, finished second in the series title race five times, and a three-time winner of the Daytona 500.

“Bobby was the ultimate fan’s driver,” Allison’s family said in a statement. “He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his fans and would stop to sign autographs and have conversations with them everywhere he went. He was a dedicated family man and friend, and a devout Catholic.”

He helped put NASCAR on the map with more than his driving. His infamous fight with Cale Yarborough in the closing laps of the 1979 Daytona 500 served as one of the sport’s defining moments.

“Cale went to beating on my fist with his nose,” Allison has said repeatedly, often using that phrase to describe the fight. “Cale understands like I do that it really was a benefit to the interest of racing. It proves that we were sincere.”

Born in Miami in 1937, Allison started searching for more racing opportunities outside the Sunshine State. He landed in central Alabama, where he found a number of small, dirt tracks.

He returned to Florida to get brother Donnie and close friend Red Farmer. They set up shop in Hueytown, Alabama, and dominated regional races throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. They were later joined in the Alabama Gang by Jimmy Mears, Neil Bonnett and Bonnett and Allison’s sons Davey and Clifford.

Allison retired in 1988 following a crash that nearly killed him. In June 1987, he wrecked on the opening lap at Talledega Superspeedway. He hit the outside wall and then got T-boned in the driver’s side door. He was initially declared dead upon reaching a local hospital but was later resuscitated.

He eventually regained his memory, re-learned everyday activities and attempted a comeback. But a series of tragedies led Allison to retire. His son, Clifford, was fatally injured during a crash in practice for the second-tier Busch Series at Michigan International Speedway in 1992. A year later, son Davey was killed in a helicopter crash at Talladega.

Three years after that, Bobby and wife Judy divorced. They reconnected four years later at their daughter-in-law’s wedding and were remarried in 2000. They remained together until Judy’s death in 2015.

Allison was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1992 and into the NASCAR Hall of Fame along with Ned Jarrett, Bud Moore, Pearson and Lee Petty.

“Bobby Allison personified the term ‘racer,’” France said in statement. “Though he is best known as one of the winningest drivers in NASCAR Cup Series history, his impact on the sport extends far beyond the record books.

Allison is one of 10 drivers to have won NASCAR’s career “grand slam” that includes the Cup Series’ most iconic races: the Daytona 500, the Winston 500, the Coca-Cola 600 and the Southern 500.

Allison made six IndyCar Series starts for Roger Penske, including a pair of Indy 500s.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Only a dozen times in their storied histories had North Carolina and Kansas met on the hardwood.

They made sure No. 13 would be memorable.

The top-ranked Jayhawks raced to a 20-point first-half lead Friday night, led by All-America center Hunter Dickinson and a highly touted class of transfers. And the ninth-ranked Tar Heels mounted a big second-half comeback, led by All-America guard R.J. Davis and the rest of their elite backcourt, eventually pulling ahead as time was winding down at Allen Fieldhouse.

But just as they have so often at the Phog, the Jayhawks made the plays that mattered in the end.

Dickinson scored the go-ahead basket with 1:15 to go, added a foul shot with 12 seconds left, and watched as North Carolina's Elliot Cadeau missed a 3-pointer as time expired that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-carolina-kansas-tar-heels-jayhawks-score-top-25-9919dca6cfb7cfca72b0d3133ba1026a">allowed the Jayhawks to escape with a 92-89 victory</a>.

“Total class on both sides. It was cheer your team but don't get after the other team,” said Kansas coach Bill Self, who matched building namesake Phog Allen for the most wins at the school with his 590th. “Even though we didn't play our best, we found a way to win. I think it was a good game for both programs.”

The stars certainly shined in the latest showdown of two schools with a combined 10 national titles.

South Dakota State transfer Zeke Mayo had 21 points for Kansas. Dickinson scored 20 and KJ Adams Jr. finished with 14 as the Jayhawks (2-0) narrowly avoided matching the biggest blown-lead loss in school history.

Seth Trimble had 19 points, Davis scored 16 and Cadeau finished with 12 points and seven assists for the Tar Heels (1-1), who were able to come back from their 49-29 deficit in part because of a 28-for-31 performance at the foul line.

“I mean, any time you bring two unbelievable programs that have terrific kids and talented kids — competitive kids — it doesn't matter whether it's March or November. It's going to be competitive," North Carolina coach Hubert Davis said.

“You run through that tunnel and you see that crowd, and you see Kansas across the court,” Davis added. “If you can't be fired up to play and compete in this type of atmosphere, against that type of team, something must be wrong with you.”

It is the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-carolina-kansas-tar-heels-jayhawks-rivalry-f43ba6f557b3e5393acee8e4434132a9">shared history of North Carolina and Kansas</a>&nbsp;— the quality of their matchups, including five Final Four tussles and two national title games, along with the Hall of Fame coaches that bind them together — that has made their series a rivalry.

In fact, this was only the second game on campus, and came more than six decades after eventual Kansas coach Larry Brown led the Tar Heels to victory in the Phog. And despite the rarity of home-and-home series in an era of enlarged conference schedules, in-season tournaments and interleague showdowns, the 14th game between Kansas and North Carolina is due to take place Nov. 14, 2025, when the Jayhawks visit Chapel Hill for the first time.

Until then, the bragging rights in a series deadlocked at six wins apiece before Friday night remain with Kansas.

The Jayhawks, who rallied from 16 down to beat North Carolina in their last matchup for the 2022 national title, seized control with an early 15-3 run, and eventually stretched the lead to 20 with just under two minutes to go in the first half.

The Tar Heels, led by their exceptional backcourt but weaker in the post, struggled to contain Dickinson and Adams when their big men got into foul trouble. Jalen Washington, Jae’Lyn Withers and Ven-Allen Lubin sat for stretches in the first half with two fouls apiece, and Tyzhaun Claude picked up three for North Carolina in just 3 1/2 minutes.

Once the big men got back, though, the Tar Heels started to come back. And it didn't take long to make it a game.

Davis, Cadeau and Trimble did most of the work, just as they are expected to do all season. But the big guys also played a part in the comeback, and it was back-to-back baskets by Withers that gave North Carolina an 80-79 lead with 7:06 to go.

The teams jockeyed for the lead from there, the Tar Heels pulling ahead 89-87 on Washington's basket with 2 minutes left. But Mayo answered for Kansas at the other end, and after getting a stop, Dickinson provided the go-ahead bucket. He added the first of two free throws with 12 seconds left, setting up North Carolina's last-chance 3-pointer.

When the shot from Cadeau bounced away, the Jayhawks spilled onto the court in a celebration fit for March.

After all, they had won a game fit for the NCAA Tournament.

“I wanted to play this game because I love playing basketball. I love competing,” said Davis, his voice hoarse from yelling over the din. “They got to come to our place next year. The game is the game, you know? I just love competing.”
