Survive and advance was the theme Sunday afternoon as the top-seeded and No. 3 Barton Community College men's soccer team opened postseason play with a narrow 1-0 victory over sixth-seeded Dodge City Community College in the opening round of the Region 6/Plains District Tournament at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
Dominating possession but unable to capitalize on numerous first-half opportunities, the Cougars finally broke through in the 57th minute behind Masaki Tsuji's 20th goal of the season, snapping the scoreless deadlock and ultimately providing the difference.
The victory improves Barton to 18-1-1 overall, extending its unbeaten streak to 13 matches while advancing to Thursday's Region 6/Plains District Tournament semifinals against third-seeded Garden City Community College. The Conquistadors conclude their season at 3-14-3.
The Cougars controlled much of the opening half, generating 14 shots while limiting Dodge City to five attempts. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, Barton was unable to break through as Conquistador goalkeeper Leonardo Acquarone turned away all three shots on frame to keep the contest nil-nil into the halftime break.
With a 15 mph southerly wind at their backs for the final 45 minutes, the Cougars continued applying offensive pressure before finally finding the breakthrough. In the 57th minute.
Rafael Calmon's pressure at the point forced a Conquistador defender into a turnover along the backline, allowing Shun Imai to collect the loose ball and take a couple of touches before threading a through ball to Tsuji charging down the near side. Tsuji carried possession into the box before converting the one-on-one opportunity with a 12-yard shaped strike inside the far post for his seventh game-winning goal of the season.
The Cougars continued pressing following the go-ahead goal, generating a flurry of scoring opportunities over the next five minutes. Barton placed three shots on frame and had two additional attempts blocked before earning a penalty kick in the 62nd minute following a handball. Calmon, toeing the stripe, looked to double the advantage, but Acquarone turned away the attempt to keep the Conquistadors within striking distance.
Dodge City mounted a late push in search of the equalizer, but Pedro Lisboa answered the call, turning aside three Conquistador attempts over the final 19 minutes, including stops in the 85th and 88th minutes, to preserve the shutout and secure Barton's spot in the semifinal round.
By the Numbers:
The Cougars finished with a 28-11 advantage in total shots, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.
Calmon paced the Barton attack with seven shots, placing four on frame, while Tsuji followed with six attempts, including two on target. Imai and Kotaro Kimura each added five shots.
Lisboa collected four saves across the full 90 minutes to secure his fourth solo shutout and combined eighth clean sheet of the season, while Dodge City's Acquarone finished with eight saves.
