COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Beau Pribula threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns, Jamal Roberts ran for 143 yards and the clinching score, and Missouri rallied to beat Kansas 42-31 on Saturday in the first edition of the Border War in more than a decade.

Kevin Coleman Jr. had 10 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown, and Brett Norfleet's second TD grab gave the Tigers (2-0) the lead with 4:14 to go, before their defense stopped Jalon Daniels and Co. and allowed Missouri to put the game away.

“I thought that was one of the coolest things: It wasn't our players folding in the moment that caused us to have issues, it was players making plays in the moment that elevated us,” Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz said.

The series, which began in 1891 and remains among the most-played in Division I football, had been on hiatus since 2011, when Missouri left the Big 12 for the SEC. That move only added another layer of animosity to a rivalry between states that traces its history to the Civil War, and the bloody conflict between slave states and free states.

The tension was evident from the opening kickoff to the final seconds ticking off the clock.

“There's a lot around it,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said, “but at the same time, it's two teams playing.”

Daniels did his best to lead the Jayhawks (2-1) to victory. He threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns, including one to DeShawn Hanika that gave them a 31-24 lead with 8:45 remaining — a lead that the Kansas defense was unable to hold.

The game was tied 21-all after a first half filled with twists and turns.

Missouri dealt the first blow on Ahmad Hardy's 32-yard run. But the Jayhawks countered with a long TD drive, then returned a fumble 28 yards for another score. Moments later, Daniels silenced sold-out Faurot Field with a sneak for a 21-6 lead.

The Tigers recovered from that quick blitz in the second quarter, though. They allowed Kansas to run just four plays for minus-18 yards, and Pribula's touchdown pass to Coleman — coupled with a safety and two field goals — resulted in a tied score.

Kansas became the first FBS team in a decade to get outgained by 200-plus yards and not trail at the break.

The Jayhawks settled down at halftime, stopping Missouri on fourth down and kicking a field goal in the third quarter to regain the lead. And after the Tigers answered with a methodical 75-yard touchdown drive, Daniels completed a couple of long passes before finding Hanika for the second time in the end zone to give Kansas a 31-24 lead.

Pribula and the Tigers had the final answer, though, twice converting on fourth down before the go-ahead pass to Norfleet late in the game. And after forcing a punt, Roberts put it out of reach with a 63-yard touchdown run in the final minutes.

“Growing up a Mizzou kid, you always heard about this game and how big it is,” Norfleet said. “It's playing for the guy to the left and the right of you, and it's also playing for the past teams that have played KU, and not letting them down.”

Kansas has plenty of opportunities, even after a disastrous second quarter. But it couldn't stop the Tigers on fourth down in the fourth quarter, and that opened the door for Pribula to win the game for them.

Missouri could have been rattled after falling into a 21-6 hole. Instead, the Tigers showed plenty of poise in rallying to victory.

Missouri continues a six-game homestand against Louisiana on Saturday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Cale Hellums accounted for three touchdowns that included a 14-yard touchdown run with 2:52 left to help Army beat Kansas State 24-21 on Saturday night.

“I couldn’t have done it by myself,” Hellums said after his first career start in which he carried the ball 41 times. “Having the O-line there, the slots, the receivers, everyone blocking their tails off. It was a great victory on both sides, on offense and defense.”

Kansas State’s (1-2) final drive ended when Avery Johnson threw an interception just past midfield. It was just the 10th home nonconference loss for Kansas State since 1990.

The Black Knights (1-1) kept the ball on the ground, running the ball 70 times out of their 82 offensive plays. Army had four scoring drives of at least 13 plays, including three which took at least seven minutes, and outgained K-State 332-247 in total yards.

The key for the Black Knights was going 6 of 7 on fourth down.

“A lot of people think you only get three downs to get 10 yards,” Army coach Jeff Monken said. “They give you four. So we try to operate so that we get ourselves in a position where we can go forward on fourth down. Some of the fourth downs were a little bit longer than we’d like. We’d like to be 4th-and-1.”

Hellums completed 7 of 11 passes and ran 41 times for 124 yards. He tossed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Brady Anderson to end the first half.

“I was not tempted at all. We were going for it,” Monken said after the game when asked if he was tempted to attempt a field goal with 2 seconds left in the half. “Three points weren’t going to help us. That one changed the game. If we don’t score that touchdown right there, we may not win the game.”

Hellums later added a 1-yard TD run late in the third quarter that gave the Black Knights a 14-13 lead, but Bryce Noernberg returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards into the end zone and K-State regained the lead, 21-14.

Army cut the lead to 21-17 with 10:46 left, and then attempted a squib kick on the ensuing kickoff, hoping to avoid another long return. It caromed off a K-State player and Army recovered on its own 44.

“We weren’t running an onside kick," Monken said. “We decided we were going to go with a squib kick and it just hit one of their guys, ricocheted off. And it worked out.”

Army held a 40:44 to 19:16 advantage in time of possession and is the first K-State opponent to rush for more than 200 yards since late in the 2023 season.

“We didn’t finish drives,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. “That’s why it was 13-7 at the half and not 21-7. You can’t settle for field goals.”

Johnson finished 15-of-25 passing for 172 yards and threw one touchdown pass to Jaron Tibbs for the Wildcats. Tibbs finished with five catches for 61 yards.

Army: The Black Knights went for it on fourth down seven times, converting six. Their most gutsy attempt was Hellums' TD toss to Anderson on 4th-and-goal from the 2 with three seconds left in the first half.

Kansas State: The Wildcats missed starting running back Dylan Edwards, who was injured in the season's opening game the first time he touched the ball. Without Edwards' explosiveness, the Wildcats rushed for 75 yards on 18 carries.

Army: The Black Knights have next weekend off before hosting North Texas on Sept. 20.

Kansas State: The Wildcats play at Arizona on Friday. Even though both teams are in the Big 12, it will be a nonconference game.

Hellums accounts for 3 TDs, scores with 2:52 left to push Army past Kansas State 24-21

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There are two ways to look at the Kansas City Chiefs' season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil.

The pessimist will say that the Chiefs hardly looked like Super Bowl contenders. Their defense allowed Justin Herbert to throw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns. Their offense struggled to consistently move the ball. And both sides had a lot to do with 10 penalties that impaired their ability to do much of anything.

The optimistic will say they still had a chance to pull out a victory.

“We can learn from this as we move forward. I’ve got to make sure I get my team in a better state there coming out, playing with more emotion. We were a little flat that first half, and that cost us,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after&nbsp;the 27-21 loss Friday night.

“There were some good things in there, but, again, we’ve got to make sure we take care of business.”

There isn't a whole lot of time. The Chiefs have a Super Bowl rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles up next.

The matchup with the Chargers in Sao Paulo went awry right from the start, when wide receiver Xavier Worthy hurt his shoulder in a collision with teammate Travis Kelce. The Chiefs already were playing without Rashee Rice, who is suspended for the first six games of the season, leaving them without two of their best playmakers in the passing game.

No wonder it took Patrick Mahomes until the second half to get going.

By then, the Chiefs were playing from behind.

“I think it's a learning moment, especially for the young guys on the team,” Mahomes said. “We’re going to get everybody’s best and we have to play up to that standard if we want to win football games. I feel we didn’t play to that standard.”

To be sure: The Chiefs have high standards. They have won nine consecutive AFC West titles, though they are suddenly 0-1 in the division. They have made seven consecutive AFC title games. They have played in the past three Super Bowls.

They also haven't started 0-2 in a season since 2014 — Reid's second season and the most recent time they failed to make the playoffs.

“You're looking at the first game of the season, and you can't judge the team's success by one game or even one particular play,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said.

“We have 16 more opportunities to get better. We’re going to watch, make some corrections, fix some errors. I think it was self-inflicted errors — offside, roughing the passers, multiple times we shot ourselves in the foot. Some self-inflicted wounds that we can fix, detail that up and I think we can improve in that aspect.”

One of the big questions facing the Kansas City defense was whether it could stop the run, especially against a team that excels on the ground. It wound up holding the Chargers to just 90 yards on 25 carries, or 3.6 yards per attempt.

As good as the Chiefs were against the run, they were lousy against the pass. Herbert was 25 of 34 for 318 yards and three TDs, and he was rarely under pressure. And when he was flushed from the pocket, he was able to scramble for positive yardage.

Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown had 10 catches for 99 yards, helping atone for an early third down drop while making up for Worthy's absence. He was hurt on their first preseason play last season and didn't return until late in the season, so the Chiefs have waited a long time to see “Hollywood” have a real impact on a game.

Right tackle Jawaan Taylor was called for two holdings penalties and two false starts, costing the Chiefs offense 30 yards when it was struggling mightily to move the ball. He was the NFL's second-most penalized player last season.

The Chiefs hope to learn more about Worthy's shoulder injury when he undergoes an MRI exam in Kansas City.

57 — Mahomes led the Chiefs in rushing with more than half of their 98 yards on the ground.

Chiefs forced to regroup after losing to Chargers in season opener marred by penalties and injuries

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez’s three-run homer highlighted a five-run first inning as the Kansas City Royals routed the Minnesota Twins 11-2 on Saturday night.

Vinnie Pasquantino doubled sharply off the right-field fence, producing one run before Salvador Perez’s 25th home run added three more. Nick Loftin’s double to left-center made it 5-0 as the Royals batted around in the first.

Joe Ryan allowed five runs on four hits and four walks while throwing 62 pitches in two innings, his shortest outing since Aug. 7, 2024.

It was a rare poor showing for Ryan (13-8) against Kansas City. In 10 previous starts he was 8-0 with a 1.34 ERA.

James Outman doubled leading off the Twins’ third — snapping an 0-for-14 slump — and Byron Buxton followed with an RBI triple before scoring on Luke Keaschall’s grounder. Buxton’s last eight hits have gone for extra bases.

The Royals responded with three runs in the bottom of the third on RBI hits by Kyle Isbel, Maikel Garcia and Pasquantino.

Stephen Kolek (5-5) allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings, striking out four.

Kansas City native Carter Jensen had an RBI double for his first major league hit.

Pasquantino, Loftin and Jensen each had two RBIs. Loftin had three of the Royals’ 13 hits.

Kansas City played without star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who&nbsp;left Friday’s game&nbsp;with low back spasms. Since 2023, the Royals are 3-5 in games Witt misses.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. left Friday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins in the seventh inning due to low back spasms.

The shortstop made two defensive plays, on ground balls, in the top half of the sixth inning, then exited before the Royals took the field in the seventh.

“(It happened) sometime in that inning before we took him out,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He talked to (Royals head athletic trainer Kyle Turner). As he sat there, it got worse.”

With the Royals leading 2-1, Witt was replaced in the lineup by Nick Loftin, playing third base while Maikel Garcia shifted to shortstop.

Quatraro offered no prognosis on Witt’s return.

“Right now we just think it’s back spasms, low back spasms,” Quatraro said. “It locked up pretty good on him.”

Witt was hitless in three at-bats with one strikeout.

Justin Herbert finished off the Los Angeles Chargers' season-opening victory in style, sliding for a first down that effectively ended the game.

The quarterback earned style points for his scramble and sideline slide that capped a 318-yard, three-touchdown performance in a 27-21 victory over the Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night in Sao Paulo. Herbert had 32 yards rushing, too.

Los Angeles' first win over the Chiefs since Sept. 26, 2021, snapped a seven-game skid against the team that has dominated the AFC for nearly a decade.

“It’s monumental,” Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said. “September 5th will go down in some Charger lore, in my opinion. It was a big win.”

The NFL's second game South America was streamed on YouTube, with Brazilian soccer superstar Neymar in attendance. Newly engaged pop superstar Taylor Swift wasn't there to watch fiancé Travis Kelce and see Colombian singer Karol G perform at halftime.

Herbert became just the third quarterback in Chargers history with 300 yards and three TDs in a season opener. His 19-yard run on third-and-14 dashed any comeback hopes the Chiefs had with 2:21 to play. He finished 25 of 34 and was sacked three times.

“We knew it was going to be a dogfight, so we showed up today with our best effort,” Herbert said. “It was fun to see.”

Mahomes was 24 of 39 for 258 yards, one touchdown and two sacks.

“This will be a big lesson for us,” Mahomes said. “They definitely came out with more energy than we did. We got to get better from the start.”

Herbert's 23-yard TD pass to Quentin Johnston extended the lead to 26-18 with 5:02 remaining in the fourth. They hooked up for a 5-yard TD on the Chargers' opening drive of the game.

Chased by Khalil Mack, Mahomes threw incomplete to Marquise Brown on first-and-goal at the LA 9. Two more incomplete passes brought on Harrison Butker, whose 27-yard field goal cut the deficit to 27-21 with 2:34 remaining.

The Chiefs closed to 20-18 on Mahomes' 37-yard TD pass to Kelce early in the fourth. The 2-point conversion failed as Mahomes' pass was incomplete to Noah Gray.

“Multiple times we shot ourselves in the foot,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said.

The Chiefs were already down two receivers to start the game, with Rashee Rice suspended to start the season and rookie Jalen Royals out with a knee injury.

They lost another one three snaps into the game.

Xavier Worthy and teammate Kelce collided on a third-down pass. Worthy had to be helped off the field and was later ruled out with a right shoulder injury.

Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman didn't return after leaving with an ankle injury in the third.

Chargers running back Omarion Hampton made a rookie mistake late in the first half.

The first-round draft pick got a handoff on 3rd-and-16 in the final minute when the Chiefs had no timeouts left. Instead of staying in bounds and letting the clock run, Hampton ran out of bounds. That stopped the clock and the Chargers got a 36-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker for a 13-3 lead.

Mahomes then moved the Chiefs within field goal range and their kicking unit rushed on the field. Butker hit a 59-yarder with the 40 seconds to go, leaving the Chiefs trailing 13-6.

Kelce shoved Chargers defensive tackle Teair Tart, who responded with a blow to Kelce’s helmet in the third quarter. Tart was penalized for unnecessary roughness, but wasn't thrown out because he used an open hand.

Ryder Schmidt wanted to be a Panther. The 11-year-old passed away in June 2024,
but his name will now be linked with the 2025 Great Bend High School football
team and beyond. For years, the Panther football team passed through the Clint
Flegler Memorial Tunnel that memorialized the 15-year-old who passed away in
2003. Friday night, the school debuted a new inflatable tunnel bearing Schmidt’s
name.

The moment of brevity soon turned into excitement as one of
the most talented Panther teams in school history took the field in its season
opener against McPherson. With a series of big plays, Great Bend handled the
Bullpups 42-7.

“It was a great game against a very well-rounded team, but
the guys we have are, I think, unstoppable when you put us all together, with a
great coaching staff,” said Panther junior Cooper Ohnmacht. “It’s a great fan
base - all our families and coaches, once again. It really builds us up as a
team. The whole town being behind us to support us is unbelievable. It
definitely pushes us to be what we can be.”

Ohnmacht had himself a night, beginning just four plays in
when intercepted a Carter Bengston pass and returned it 80 yards down the
sideline for the first points of the season less than two minutes into the
contest.

“The interception was huge,” Ohnmacht said. “I did it two
years ago versus the same team as a freshman, so that was really exciting for
me. The coaches and everyone were pumped, but when a big play like that
happens, it turns the wheels for our team and kind of shocks the other team,
which really helps us out.”

Panther kicker Diego Soto went down with a scary-looking injury
on the McPherson sideline on the opening kick. Ohnmacht took over, making all
six point-after attempts in the game and also pinning the Bullpups deep in
their own territory twice on kickoffs. Onhmacht also delivered a big hit from the secondary and blocked
29-yard field goal attempt late in the game.

The rest of the team was just as effective. McPherson’s
second drive halted near midfield. A snap over the punter’s head gave the
Panthers a short field. Four plays later, senior Ian Premer punched it in from
a yard out and a 14-0 lead nine minutes into the season.

The Panther defense forced another three-and-out, and Great
Bend drove the field before senior quarterback Daxton Minton stretched out on a
10-yard touchdown run. The Bullpups shanked the next punt out of their own end
zone, resulting in another short field. Minton found senior Hayden Kelly for an
18-yard touchdown and the Panthers led 28-0 midway through the second quarter.

McPherson scored its lone touchdown on its next drive when
Bengston connected with junior Ashton Malm over the middle for a 43-yard
strike.

The Panthers got the ball to open the second half. The Bullpup
defense left Premer wide open, and he was able to take a Minton pass 45 yards
to the house. McPherson threatened one more time, getting all the way to the
Panther 3-yard line. Junior Kale Kern came up with a strip and Kelly returned
the fumble 95 yards to set the clock in motion for good with 9:45 remaining.

Bengston threw for 67 yards and the touchdown on 6-of-11
passing in the first half. He completed just two passes in the final two
quarters to finish 8-of-17 with 82 yards. Junior Dane Becker ran the ball 30
times to finish with 106 yards for the Bullpups.

Minton finished 7-of-11 for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Premer
caught three passes for 78 yards and a score. Minton also led the team with 51
rushing yards on seven attempts, and senior Conner Holladay added 46 yards on
his seven carries.

2003. Friday night, the school debuted a new inflatable tunnel bearing Schmidt’s
name.The moment of brevity soon turned into excitement as one of
the most talented Panther teams in school history took the field in its season
opener against McPherson. With a series of big plays, Great Bend handled the
Bullpups 42-7.“It was a great game against a very well-rounded team, but
the guys we have are, I think, unstoppable when you put us all together, with a
great coaching staff,” said Panther junior Cooper Ohnmacht. “It’s a great fan
base - all our families and coaches, once again. It really builds us up as a
team. The whole town being behind us to support us is unbelievable. It
definitely pushes us to be what we can be.”Ohnmacht had himself a night, beginning just four plays in
when intercepted a Carter Bengston pass and returned it 80 yards down the
sideline for the first points of the season less than two minutes into the
contest.“The interception was huge,” Ohnmacht said. “I did it two
years ago versus the same team as a freshman, so that was really exciting for
me. The coaches and everyone were pumped, but when a big play like that
happens, it turns the wheels for our team and kind of shocks the other team,
which really helps us out.”Panther kicker Diego Soto went down with a scary-looking injury
on the McPherson sideline on the opening kick. Ohnmacht took over, making all
six point-after attempts in the game and also pinning the Bullpups deep in
their own territory twice on kickoffs. Onhmacht also delivered a big hit from the secondary and blocked
29-yard field goal attempt late in the game.The rest of the team was just as effective. McPherson’s
second drive halted near midfield. A snap over the punter’s head gave the
Panthers a short field. Four plays later, senior Ian Premer punched it in from
a yard out and a 14-0 lead nine minutes into the season.The Panther defense forced another three-and-out, and Great
Bend drove the field before senior quarterback Daxton Minton stretched out on a
10-yard touchdown run. The Bullpups shanked the next punt out of their own end
zone, resulting in another short field. Minton found senior Hayden Kelly for an
18-yard touchdown and the Panthers led 28-0 midway through the second quarter.McPherson scored its lone touchdown on its next drive when
Bengston connected with junior Ashton Malm over the middle for a 43-yard
strike.The Panthers got the ball to open the second half. The Bullpup
defense left Premer wide open, and he was able to take a Minton pass 45 yards
to the house. McPherson threatened one more time, getting all the way to the
Panther 3-yard line. Junior Kale Kern came up with a strip and Kelly returned
the fumble 95 yards to set the clock in motion for good with 9:45 remaining.Bengston threw for 67 yards and the touchdown on 6-of-11
passing in the first half. He completed just two passes in the final two
quarters to finish 8-of-17 with 82 yards. Junior Dane Becker ran the ball 30
times to finish with 106 yards for the Bullpups.Minton finished 7-of-11 for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Premer
caught three passes for 78 yards and a score. Minton also led the team with 51
rushing yards on seven attempts, and senior Conner Holladay added 46 yards on
his seven carries.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;For the first time since 2011 and the 121st&nbsp;time overall, the Kansas Jayhawks and Missouri Tigers will face off on the gridiron Saturday in the return of the StorageMart Border Showdown. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m., at Faurot Field, with the action being televised by ESPN2 with Mike Monaco, Kirk Morrison and Dawn Davenport on the call.

The two programs met every season from 1919 to 2011, before the rivalry stopped when Missouri moved to the Southeastern Conference. The matchup reignites this week, with Missouri leading the all-time series 56-55-9. Missouri won the most recent matchup between the two schools in 2011, earning a 24-10 win at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Kansas last played in Columbia in 2006 and last won there in 2004.

Both teams are off to undefeated starts this season. The Jayhawks moved to 2-0 on the season on Friday night, beating Wagner 46-7. That win came on the heels of a Week 0 win over Fresno State, 31-7. The Kansas defense, under first-year defensive coordinator&nbsp;D.K. McDonald, has allowed just 14 points and 359 yards of total offense through two games.

Fresno State and Wagner have combined to rush for just 90 yards in two games. The 90 rushing yards allowed are the fewest allowed through two games since 2009 and the 14 points allowed are also the fewest allowed through two games since '09.

Quarterback&nbsp;Jalon Daniels&nbsp;has had an explosive start to the season to lead the offensive side. Daniels has already thrown for 456 yards, seven touchdowns and just one interception in two games. The seven touchdown passes are the most by a Kansas quarterback through the first two games of the season since at least 1996. Daniels is one of just three Power 4 quarterbacks nationally to have 50-plus touchdown passes and 7,000-plus yards at one school in his career.

Daniels has gotten plenty of help on offense, including from running back&nbsp;Daniel Hishaw Jr., who has rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown so far this season and receivers&nbsp;Emmanuel Henderson Jr., and&nbsp;Cam Pickett, who have combined for 17 catches, 260 yards and five touchdowns in just two games. Daniels has completed passes to 15 different receivers through two games.

Missouri enters the game at 1-0 on the season, having beaten Central Arkansas, 61-6, last Thursday. Quarterback Beau Pribula, a transfer from Penn State, threw for 283 yards and two touchdowns on 23-of-28 passing in the opener. Running back Ahmad Hardy, a transfer from Louisiana-Monroe, rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Defensively, Missouri was led by linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, who had eight tackles and one tackle-for-loss against UCA. Trotter transferred from West Virginia, where he played with current KU linebacker and leading tackler,&nbsp;Trey Lathan.

Following the matchup with Missouri, Kansas will have its first open week of the season and then will host back-to-back conference games on Sept. 20 against West Virginia and Sept. 27 against Cincinnati.

Kansas State began preparing for Army in the spring, as coaches studied film, and players performed walk-throughs with purpose to get a feel for the uniqueness of a Black Knights' triple option-oriented offensive attack that led them to their winningest season in history in 2024.The preparation continued into the summer months, and after a Monday review session following K-State's 38-35 win over North Dakota, all eyes focused on a dangerous Army squad that can cause fits at any moment.

"We watched the film and were very critical of it on Monday and put it to bed and moved onto Army. I'm proud of our kids. We've had really physical practices on Tuesday and Wednesday. The energy level is up. The players are doing what I hoped they would do, which is to hold each other accountable to the standard we all expect."K-State, recognized as one of the most successful FBS programs in the last four years, is looking to perform to its standard with its best showing of this early season on Saturday. After entering the season ranked No. 17 in the AP Top 25 Poll, K-State suffered a 24-21 loss to No. 22 Iowa State in Ireland before needing a game-winning drive and defensive stop to prevent North Dakota from capturing arguably its biggest win in history last weekend.Now, K-State, which last hosted a service academy in 1987 in Manhattan and hasn't beaten Army in three tries, could certainly use a good spirit-salving performance to end its home non-conference slate before heading to Arizona to play next Friday."We're not in crisis mode," Klieman said, "but the kids know we have to be more urgent in everything we're doing."&nbsp; Army, the defending AAC Champion, is 16-3 in its last 19 games dating to November 2023 —&nbsp;a stretch that ranks second nationally in winning percentage (.889), trailing only Oregon.But Army heads to the road for the first time this year after squandering a two-touchdown second-half lead in a 30-27 home loss to FCS member Tarleton State, snapping a 17-game winning streak against FCS opponents. Led by quarterback Dewayne Coleman's 129 passing yards (with two touchdowns) and 100 rushing yards (with one touchdown), and 124 total yards from slotback Noah Short, the Black Knights racked up 400 total yards, including 280 on the ground."(Short) is a tremendous player and has been a really good player for a long time," Klieman said. "I've talked to a couple coaches who's played him, and they've said they have a lot of good options schemes, but you better know where that kid is at. Whether it's in the passing game, the jet sweep or in the option game, he really makes them go. We have to make sure we know where he's at. He's a really talented guy."Army hasn't played a Power 4 opponent since it faced Missouri in the 2021 Armed Forces Bowl and hasn't beaten a Big 12 opponent since a 27-24 overtime win against Baylor on September 23, 2006."I hope we can play a lot better and give ourselves a much better chance this Saturday than the last time out," said 12th-year head coach Jeff Monken, who is 82-58 at Army. "We're grateful for the opportunity to play a great team like Kansas State. It's one of the things that our guys really cherish in their experience at West Point is their ability to play in games like this against teams like this."They're a great team. It'll take our very best effort, the best we can muster, to be in the game with them. Hopefully, we can come up with that kind of effort and be competitive on Saturday night."The Black Knights have the Wildcats' full attention."This will be a really good football team and a four-quarter game," Klieman said. "It's a game of possessions because they want to hang onto the football with long, sustained drives after leading the nation in time of possession and in fourth-down conversions last year. It's going to be a big challenge. We have to win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball."This will be a big game. You don't often get a chance to have a service academy come in here, and Army is best of the best."&nbsp; Nearly one week after Klieman lamented the inability of some of his defensive players to maintain proper "eye discipline," suggesting that he would march out 11 defenders who demonstrated proper eye discipline for Saturday, K-State defensive coordinator&nbsp;Joe Klanderman&nbsp;said, "It's a good time to play Army" following the Wildcats' recent lapses with eye discipline."There wasn't anything that happened Saturday that our guys weren't capable of doing," Klanderman said. "Guys get keyed up, want to do too much, let themselves drift out of doing their job, and try to do somebody else's job, and you're not going to be able to do that against Army. That's how they make their hay. Guys have to be dialed into what they're doing."The triple option is primarily run out of the flexbone formation, a running-focused system that has been a staple of the service academies for years. On a triple-option play, the quarterback makes a decision during the play based on how the defense reacts. The quarterback can either hand the ball to the fullback diving up the middle, or he can fake the handoff and keep the ball and run toward the outside, or he can pitch the ball to one of the slotbacks running in motion on the outside.A key reason why the triple option can baffle an undisciplined defense? Because the offense is designed to confuse the defense, forcing defenders to hesitate and account for multiple running threats on every play. It's about disciplined execution.&nbsp; One possible plus for K-State? Its defense has held opponents to an average of 2.9 yards per rush on 79 attempts and has 16 tackles for loss and seven sacks, which ranks 24th&nbsp;in the FBS. Linebacker&nbsp;Austin Romaine&nbsp;leads with 18 tackles, including 10 against North Dakota. Defensive end&nbsp;Tobi Osunsanmi&nbsp;has a team-leading 3.0 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss."It's not only the style of offense, but they're really well coached in what they do," Klanderman said. "They're going to be physical, you're going to come out of this game sore, but it is what it is, and if you are what you hope that you are, it doesn't matter if you're see triple option or air raid or whatever, you should be able to defend it.""It's eye discipline and having discipline in your keys and in what you do. Everything should be able to fit. Now we have to execute. That's the biggest thing. I'm sure they're going to have wrinkles and make adjustments, and I hope we can stay ahead of it."Early preparation for the Black Knights has apparently been helpful."And it's necessary," Klanderman said. "This is a really hard offense to prepare for in four days. I think we did a decent job getting ahead of it."&nbsp; Meanwhile, Army will try to stay ahead of a K-State offense that has totaled at least 375 total yards in 34 games since 2022, which is tied for fourth among Power 4 teams.Avery Johnson, who is set to make his 17th&nbsp;career start, has a 157.7 pass efficiency rating this season, and is 49-of-73 passing for 591 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. After competing 58.3% of his passes a year ago, Johnson has completed 67.1% of his throws in 2025."The zero turnovers I'm most proud of," offensive coordinator&nbsp;Matt Wells&nbsp;said. "We did put the ball into harm's way about four times, and we were living right on Saturday night. If you continue to play with fire, you're going to get your butt burned. He knows that, and we both know that. The throwing percentage should be higher. We've missed eight balls that were inaccurate, and we've had a few drops. That's the cost of doing business when you're throwing the ball. "I wouldn't say he's 100% but he's probably 80%, and he's practicing and doing a really good job. He just has to get some rust knocked off him and get into the flow. He's helping our scout team because he isn't ready physically, but in time he will be, and he'll help us."Monken believes that Army will have its hands plenty full Saturday. &nbsp;And he believes that Big 12 opponents will have their hands full in the coming weeks, as well."Their quarterback is really fast and throws great and they have running backs, receivers who are really talented and productive, and an offensive line that isn't giving up sacks," Monken said. "They do a great job controlling football games. That's what you want an offense to do. There's a lot of concern with how talented they are and how confident they play and how well-coached they are.
