Alvord and McCormick lead Barton softball's ten on All-KJCCC/Region 6 post-season selection list

The Barton Community College softball team earned ten total selections on the 2026 All-KJCCC/Region 6 postseason teams, highlighted by First Team honors for sophomores Karter Alvord and Peyton McCormick.

Joining the pair on the postseason recognition list were fellow sophomores Morgan Thatcher and Laney Wood along with freshmen Ellie Crawford, Addison Crockett, Carly Erpelding, Kahli Fields, Shaylee Spears, and Charley Wheeler, all receiving honorable mention distinction.

Second Team selections a year ago, Alvord elevated her play at shortstop into one of the conference's premier infield campaigns while McCormick's versatility at the plate and inside the circle earned the duo Barton's lone First Team distinctions. Thatcher and Wood also repeated as honorable mention selections following recognition during the 2025 season.

The postseason honors capped another strong offensive season for the Cougars, who tied for fourth in the competitive Jayhawk Conference standings at 18-14 before concluding the year at 29-26 overall. Barton led the conference with 335 hits while ranking second in batting average (.377), extra-base hits (117), triples (15), and RBIs (257), finishing third in runs scored (292). The Cougars also proved to be the league's second difficult team to retire at the plate, striking out just 89 times while breaking the program's overall single-season walks record with 227.

In addition to her postseason honors, McCormick also earned All-Tournament Team recognition following the Region 6/Plains District Tournament after going 1-1 inside the circle with just four earned runs allowed while delivering a nine-RBI performance at the plate during Barton's tournament matchup against Pratt.

Karter Alvord â€“ First Team Infielder
The sophomore shortstop from McPherson followed her Second Team accolades from a year ago with another banner season, ranking among the conference's top offensive performers in multiple categories.

In conference play, Alvord batted a league third-best .494 while ranking among the top-five with 41 hits, 10 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 19 walks, and 39 RBIs.

Alvord reached base in 29 of the 30 conference games she played in, including a pair of nine-game hitting streaks before closing league play with hits in four straight contests. Twelve of her 25 games with a hit resulted in multi-hit performances, highlighted by a pair of three-hit outings and a perfect 4-for-4 performance.

Opening the season with a 27-game on-base streak, extending to 33 straight games dating back to her freshman campaign, Alvord went on to produce a program sixth-best .452 batting average behind 66 hits, including 33 extra-base knocks with 18 doubles, five triples, and 10 home runs. Her 56 RBIs ranked second on the team while her 29 walks were fifth-most in program history, helping Barton establish a new single-season team record and contributing to a .541 on-base percentage.

The Sam Houston State signee also cemented herself throughout Barton's career record book, closing her Cougar career on a 21-game on-base streak and nine-game hitting streak. Alvord finished fifth in program history in batting average (.435), ninth in hits (130), eighth in doubles (30), seventh in triples (6), 10th in home runs (20), fourth in RBIs (118), and fifth in walks (45).

Peyton McCormick â€“ First Team Utility
Whether pitching, playing outfield, or serving as designated player, McCormick's versatility proved invaluable throughout the season in earning First Team recognition.

A Second Team selection last season, the Cheney native hit .392 during conference play, driving in 28 runs on 38 hits with nine extra-base connections. McCormick recorded hits in 25 of her 31 games played, producing eight multi-hit outings while driving in multiple runs in nine contests, highlighted by six RBIs against Fort Hays Tech Northwest and five versus Seward County.

Inside the circle, McCormick ranked 10th in the conference in strikeouts per seven innings at 6.57, recording 41 strikeouts across 43.2 innings while posting a 4-6 league mark in starting seven of her 12 conference appearances.

Overall, McCormick logged 105 innings in the circle with an 8-13 record, starting 17 of her 24 appearances. Highlighting her work in the circle was a career-high 10 strikeout performance at Seward County along with an eight-strikeout outing later in the season against Southeast Community College.

At the plate, McCormick batted .383 with 62 hits, including 15 extra-base hits, ranking second on the squad in batting average. Rarely cooling off offensively, McCormick also pieced together six separate hitting streaks of five games or longer throughout the season.

McCormick also departed Barton among several career offensive categories, finishing fourth in triples (7), seventh in RBIs (99), ninth in runs scored (94), and sixth in walks (44).

Morgan Thatcher â€“ Honorable Mention Infielder
A steady presence at third base over her two seasons, Thatcher turned in another strong campaign both defensively and offensively for the Cougars.

The Valley Center sophomore fielded at a near flawless .987 clip during conference play, committing just one error in 75 chances. At the plate, Thatcher batted .361 against KJCCC opponents, tallying 35 hits with 15 going for extra bases.

Thatcher drove in 37 runs during league play, highlighted by a 5-for-8 doubleheader performance against Fort Hays Tech Northwest resulting in 10 RBIs. She also produced 12 multi-RBI games throughout the season.

Overall, Thatcher finished the year batting .327 with 13 doubles, three triples, and six home runs while drawing 25 walks. Frequently hit by opposing pitchers, Thatcher's nine hit-by-pitches this season moved her into seventh-most in program history, finishing her career second all-time with 22.

Laney Wood â€“ Honorable Mention Outfielder
Despite missing four games due to injury, Wood remained one of Barton's sparkplugs at the top of the lineup.

The sophomore from Kingman batted .357 in conference play with a .409 on-base percentage while playing flawless defense in the outfield.

Across 50 games, Wood hit .369 with a team second-best 62 hits, including 22 extra-base hits behind 13 doubles, four triples, and five home runs while driving in 42 runs and swiping a team-leading 17 stolen bases.

Wood also closed her Barton career among several top-10 program categories, finishing seventh in hits (134), 10th in doubles (29), 10th in triples (5), fifth in runs scored (116), ninth in walks (42), and third all-time in stolen bases (39). Highlighting her consistency at the plate throughout her two seasons were hitting streaks of 19 and 16 games during her freshman campaign, including the program's tied fifth-longest streak, while adding a 12-game hitting streak and 17-game on-base streak this season.

Ellie Crawford â€“ Honorable Mention Pitcher
The freshman from Hoisington emerged as one of Barton's most reliable arms during conference play, posting a 7-2 record across 15 appearances including 13 starts.

Crawford struck out 55 batters across 65.1 innings during league play, ranking 13th in the conference in strikeouts per seven innings at 5.89.

Her late-season growth inside the circle included a nine-strikeout performance against Dodge City before following with another six strikeouts in her second meeting against the Conquistadors.

Overall, Crawford finished 10-2 on the year across 26 appearances and 16 starts, striking out 73 over 95.1 innings pitched.

Carly Erpelding â€“ Honorable Mention Catcher
The freshman catcher from Owasso, Oklahoma, became one of Barton's biggest power threats during conference play, batting .360 with 31 hits, nine doubles, and a conference fifth-best eight home runs while driving in 35 runs.

Erpelding narrowly missed the program's single-season top-10 list in home runs, finishing the year with 13 long balls while batting .380 with 57 hits, 13 doubles, and a team-leading 57 RBIs, ranking 10th-most in program history.

Kahli Fields â€“ Honorable Mention Outfielder
Starting 27 conference games primarily near the top of the lineup, Fields provided speed and consistency for the Cougars.

The freshman from Seneca, Missouri, batted .379 in conference play with six doubles, a home run, and 21 RBIs while stealing 12 bases during league action.

Overall, Fields scored 32 runs while batting .338 with eight doubles and a home run on the season.

Charley Wheeler â€“ Honorable Mention Pitcher
Wheeler developed into one of Barton's top strikeout arms during her freshman campaign, ranking fifth among conference pitchers with 7.27 strikeouts per seven innings.

The Adair, Oklahoma, native posted a 5-4 conference record across 15 appearances with nine starts, striking out 62 batters in 59.2 innings.

Overall, Wheeler finished 9-9 with 100 strikeouts across 110 innings pitched while making 26 appearances and 19 starts.

Addison Crockett â€“ Honorable Mention Infielder
Forced into an expanded role during conference play, Crockett capitalized on the opportunity to become one of Barton's most productive bats down the stretch.

After recording just 14 plate appearances prior to league play, the Hutchinson freshman started 19 games during conference action and batted a team second-best and conference ninth-best .448.

Crockett collected 26 hits with eight doubles and three home runs while driving in 14 runs, highlighted by a grand slam during Barton's 17-0 victory over Seward County.

Shaylee Spears â€“ Honorable Mention Outfielder
Spears provided stability both defensively and offensively throughout her freshman season in centerfield.

The Berthoud, Colorado, native batted .364 in conference play while starting 28 of Barton's 30 league contests, collecting 28 hits with four doubles, two triples, and her lone home run of the season helping the Cougars build a then eight-run advantage against Butler.

Overall, Spears started 40 of her 44 appearances in centerfield, committing just two errors in 53 chances for a .967 fielding percentage. At the plate, she batted .300 with a .451 on-base percentage, aided by drawing a program single-season fourth-most 31 walks.
