The Barton Community College women's soccer team turned a halftime deficit into a statement victory Wednesday afternoon, erupting for four unanswered second half goals to knock off No. 20 Garden City Community College 5-2 at the FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays.

Snapping a three game skid, the Cougars improve to 1-2-0 in conference play and 2-3-0 overall, while the Broncbusters suffer their first blemish, slipping to 2-1-0 in league play and 7-1-1 on the season. Barton will have a quick recovery, returning to action Thursday for a 2:00 p.m. (CT) kick at Lamar Community College before resuming Jayhawk play Sunday at Dodge City Community College

The Cougars wasted little time breaking the ice, as&nbsp;Sara Aguirre&nbsp;opened the scoring in the 10th minute by settling&nbsp;Katie Potter's ball near the top of the area, creating space with two right touches before shaping an upper-90 finish near post.

Garden City responded quickly, benefitting off a pair of Cougar defensive breakdowns. The first miscue came in the 15th minute as an uncleared ball off a free kick fell to an unmarked Frieda Steene. The Broncbusters jumped in front with 4:23 remaining in the opening stanza, as Maddison Foster lofted a 30-yard strike over the out positioned netminder to give Garden City a 2-1 edge at the break.

Regrouping at the break, Barton drew even just six minutes into the second stanza, capitalizing off a Broncbuster miscue as a misdirected clearance deflected back into the net for an own goal.

The Cougars pushed in front for good in the 63rd minute with&nbsp;Maki Kimura&nbsp;converting a penalty kick after her initial free kick deflected off a Broncbuster defenseman's hand inside the box.

Kimura then helped extend the lead 11 minutes later, sending a free kick trickling through traffic to the back post, where&nbsp;Meane Martin Damiao&nbsp;acrobatically flicked in a backward heel finish near post for her first collegiate goal and 4-2 advantage.

Aguirre capped the rally in the 77th minute, settling&nbsp;Kayla Methman's long throw placed into the box, slipping past a defender, and firing a finish though the keeper's legs for her second tally of the day and fourth of the season.

Coach Aaron Glenn announced the decision Wednesday. Fields remains in the concussion protocol after being injured in the Jets' loss to Buffalo last Sunday. He fell backward when he was sacked by Joey Bosa and the back of his helmet hit off the turf. Tyrod Taylor will start in Fields' place. The 36-year-old Taylor last started for the Giants in 2023. He missed the Jets’ preseason games due to a knee injury. Glenn isn't concerned about Taylor being behind in any way. Taylor has 58 career NFL starts.

Björn Borg starts his new memoir, “Heartbeats,” with a story about being rushed to a Dutch hospital in the 1990s after overdosing on alcohol and drugs, and the Swedish tennis great closes it by revealing that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He said in a recent video interview with The Associated Press that he quit tennis at age 25 because he realized he no longer cared whether he won or lost. The 69-year-old Borg's 292-page book will be released in the United States on Sept. 23. They’ll be three decisive Game 3s over the next two days. That’s the first time that’s happened since 2015. Last season all four opening round series were sweeps. The WNBA changed its playoff format this season giving each team at least one home game in the opening round which probably has helped. In the past few years, the better seeded team would have the first two games at home. Indiana and Seattle evened up their series on their homecourt Tuesday night and Golden State came within a point of beating No. 1 Minnesota to make it 4-for-4 on series going the distance.

NEW YORK (AP) — After much speculation about her condition, Breanna Stewart was on the court Wednesday night for the Liberty’s lopsided 86-60 loss to the Phoenix Mercury in Game 2 of their first round series. But it didn’t look promising. Stewart finished with six points, two rebounds and two assists in her first game since spraining the MCL in her left knee the series’ opening game Sunday. Wednesday’s performance was a far cry from the 18 points and six rebounds she had in that Game 1 victory.

TOKYO (AP) — Former world sprint champion Fred Kerley has become the first track athlete to join the no-drug-testing Enhanced Games. Kerley is serving a ban for missed doping tests and is not at the world championships in Tokyo. His lawyers have said he's looking to contest the so-called whereabouts failures that led to his suspension. The Enhanced Games is set to debut next May in Las Vegas. Track, swimming and weightlifting contests are offering $500,000 in prize money for each event.

The Barton Community College women's golf team delivered a record-breaking performance at the Central Kansas Classic Tuesday, capturing its second straight runaway victory of the 2025-26 season at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson, Kansas.

Barton set two program records, the first coming with a final-round 297 (+9) following an opening 302 for a school-best 599 (+23) two-round total. The marks surpassed the previous 298 single-round record and the 608 two-round tally, both set by the 2022-23 squad.

The Cougars claimed the team crown by 55 strokes, placing five inside the top seven of the 45-player field. Barton finished ahead of Iowa Western Community College and by 62 shots over third-place William Penn.

Suri Rocha Orozco&nbsp;gave the team its second straight individual medalist by opening with a red-number 71 that included three birdies, then holding steady Tuesday with another trio of birdies to offset a pair of doubles in her closing 74 to finish at +1, 145.

Three shots back,&nbsp;Panalee Prachavittayagon&nbsp;secured runner-up honors at +3, 147. She tallied three birdies against four bogeys in her opening 74, then delivered a steady final-round 73.

Chomchanok Laparojkit&nbsp;also had an up-and-down Monday but drained a team-high four birdies to offset five bogeys in posting 74. She steadied her play on Tuesday with another birdie en route to a second straight 74, finishing 3rd at +4, 148.

Giovanna Tabanag&nbsp;landed 5th at +11, 155, highlighted by a collegiate-best 3-over 75 on Tuesday after opening with an 80.

Diana Alvarado, last week's Carmichael Cup medalist, made the biggest final day climb for Barton, improving seven strokes from her opening 83 by sinking two birdies in her second-round 76 to move into 7th at +15, 159.

Kadynce Nash&nbsp;landed just outside the top 10 in 11th, carding 83-82 for a +21, 165 total.

Alexandria Hunt&nbsp;put together matching 86s for 18th place at +28, 172, while&nbsp;Alexandria Baxter&nbsp;rounded out the lineup in 26th, improving three shots on day two with a 93-90 for +39, 183.

The Cougars return to action Monday at the two-day Central Plains Invitational hosted by Newton's Sand Creek Golf Course.

Program records fall as Barton women's golf wins second straight

The Barton Community College men's golf team earned a third-place finish at the Central Kansas Classic held at McPherson's Turkey Creek Golf Course.

Finishing at 34-over 874, the Cougars opened Monday with steady rounds of 285 (+5) and 287 (+7) before a short night and return bus ride back produced a 302 (+22) but hold steady by thirteen strokes in the team placings.

Iowa Western captured the team title at 9-over 849, and nine shots clear of runner-up Dodge City Community College's 18-over 858.

Leading the Cougars in the 65-man field were&nbsp;Matteu Cauvin-Piacentini&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ted Gemzell&nbsp;in sharing 6th place at 5-over 215. Cauvin-Piacentini opened with Barton's low round of the tournament at 2-under 68 before slipping three slots on the leaderboard with 71 and 76 cards. Gemzell's opening day of 71-75 left the sophomore outside the top ten but fired a closing round 1-under 69, in climbing sixth spots into the tie.

Close behind was&nbsp;Phattarapol Ongla, tying for 12th at 8-over 218, highlighted by firing a 1-under 69 in between 72 and 77 rounds.

Cooper Lucke&nbsp;rounded out the team entries in 44th place at 27-over 237, posting 77-80 rounds on Monday before carding another 80.&nbsp;Wintakorn Suwanmuang, who was 12th after Monday's 74 and 72 cards, was unable to compete on Tuesday forcing Barton to count just four scores in the final round

Barton men's golf claims third at Central Kansas Classic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cal Raleigh&nbsp;hit a pair of homers&nbsp;to match the Seattle season record set by Ken Griffey Jr., Dominic Canzone belted a career-best three homers of his own, and the AL West-leading Mariners routed the fading Kansas City Royals 12-5 on Tuesday night for their 10th consecutive win.

Raleigh's first homer, a 419-foot shot off Michael Wacha while batting left-handed, gave him 55 on the season, breaking the record for a switch-hitter set by Yankees great Mickey Mantle in 1961. Raleigh's second shot, a 425-footer off Daniel Lynch IV as he batted right-handed, tied the club mark that Griffey set during the 1997 season and matched the following year.

It was the 10th multihomer game this season for “The Big Dumper” and the 20th of Raleigh's career. The All-Star catcher also doubled in the first inning and finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs, giving him 118 on the year.

Canzone homered in the second inning, the fifth and the ninth on a hot, humid, late-summer night in which balls were sailing out of spacious Kauffman Stadium. The designated hitter also had a pair of singles to finish 5 for 5 with four RBIs.

Carter Jensen hit the first two homers of his big league career for Kansas City. It looked as if he had a third before his long fly ball in the eighth inning bounced off the right-field wall for a double.

Logan Gilbert (5-6) allowed two runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out five for Seattle. The 28-year-old righty, who also pitched well against the Royals in June, has allowed just seven earned runs total over his last five starts.

Wacha (9-12) returned after missing his last scheduled start because of a stint on the seven-day concussion list. He allowed a season-high seven runs on nine hits over 2 2/3 innings for Kansas City.

Just about every time Raleigh and Canzone stepped to the plate.

The Mariners are riding their longest winning streak since a 14-gamer from July 2-17, 2022.

Mariners RHP Bryce Miller (4-5, 5.59 ERA) gets the start Wednesday night after striking out a career-high 11 in his last start against the Angels. LHP Cole Ragans (2-3, 5.18) gets his first start for Kansas City since June 5, when he landed on the injured list with a strained left rotator cuff.

Cadillac F1 has announced a multi-year partnership with Jim Beam, making the bourbon distiller its official spirits partner. Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports, says the collaboration unites two American icons on a global stage. Cadillac says it aims to create a team where sport, technology, and culture intersect. The team will debut in 2026, with Tommy Hilfiger as the official apparel partner. Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez are the debut drivers, while Colton Herta joins as a test driver. The 29-year-old Townsend posted videos of local dishes including bullfrogs and turtles and joked she would need to “talk to HR” about the quality of the food. She took to Instagram again Wednesday to apologize after facing a backlash online. She says “everyone has been so kind and so gracious. And the things that I said were not representative of that at all."

Kevin De Bruyne has adapted well to Napoli but this week he's heading back to his old club Manchester City. Napoli's Champions League opener on Thursday marks his return to City months after an emotional farewell to the club where “King Kev” spent 10 years. De Bruyne has slotted seamlessly into Antonio Conte’s team and scored two goals in three league matches for Napoli. Conte is using him in a new role that sees him switch between central and wide positions with former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay. City is adjusting to life without De Bruyne. MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to be sidelined for several weeks with a hamstring injury. He sustained the injury during Madrid's 2-1 win over Marseille in the Champions League on Tuesday. Alexander-Arnold had to be substituted just five minutes into the match. Tests on Wednesday confirmed a muscle injury in his left leg. Alexander-Arnold joined Madrid from Liverpool this summer.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston slugger Yordan Alvarez has a “pretty significant” ankle sprain that is going to keep him out indefinitely, manager Joe Espada said Tuesday. Alvarez was injured when he turned his left ankle at home plate after scoring in the first inning of Houston’s 6-3 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. He had imaging done Tuesday. “This is gonna keep him out for a while,” Espada said before the series continued.

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Benfica fired coach Bruno Lage after the team’s home loss to Qarabag in the Champions League on Tuesday, and José Mourinho was quickly touted as the top candidate to replace him. Benfica president Rui Costa announced the decision to part ways with Lage after the league-phase loss in which Benfica squandered a two-goal lead in front of its fans. Mourinho's last job was with Fenerbahce and he has a history of Champions League success with Porto and Inter Milan.

The&nbsp;Super Bowl rematch&nbsp;turned into bully ball highlighted by the NFL’s ugliest play.

Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles pushed — literally — their way past Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs,&nbsp;20-17,&nbsp;on Sunday.

Hurts scored a touchdown on a tush push and the Eagles used the play seven times to help hand the Chiefs their first three-game losing streak with Mahomes and send them to their first&nbsp;0-2 start&nbsp;since 2014.

The&nbsp;NFL tried to ban to the tush push&nbsp;following a proposal from the Green Bay Packers in the offseason but fell two votes short of eliminating it.

Those who oppose the play must’ve cringed watching the Eagles use it repeatedly in front of a national television audience.

There’s no doubt many of the decision-makers noticed.

Tom Brady pointed out that two of Philadelphia’s offensive linemen moved early when Hurts was pushed into the end zone for a 20-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Replays showed the Eagles got away with a false start.

After Hurts appeared to lose the ball but was ruled down to gain a first down on the play in the final two minutes, Fox rules analyst Dean Blandino said: “I am done with the tush push, guys. It’s a hard play to officiate.”

While there was plenty of scoring and exciting action around the league in Week 2 — the Cowboys beat the Giants&nbsp;40-37&nbsp;in overtime in a thrilling, back-and-forth matchup — the tush push became a main topic of conversation during the NFL’s game of the week.

Sure, there was plenty of talk about&nbsp;Kansas City’s early season struggles, Andy Reid’s out-of-sync offense and Travis Kelce not being on the same page with Mahomes. But the game wasn’t pretty and the tush push magnified the ugliness.

Critics argued in the offseason that it’s a dangerous play, but there wasn’t enough injury data to ban it for safety concerns. Most of the disdain was directed at the aesthetics of the play.

“Is it part of what football has been traditionally, or is it more of a rugby play?” NFL Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay said about the discussion.

Those who hate the appearance of the tush push saw it on full display at Arrowhead Stadium.

They’ll have to see it for at least the remainder of the season because it’s not going anywhere. The Eagles (2-0) have mastered it in short-yardage situations and they’ll keep using it until team owners vote to get rid of it, if they ever do.

Blandino’s frustration with the play was echoed by viewers and NFL fans except for anyone who roots for Philly. The new argument against it could center on the difficulty officiating it properly.

“We work our (tails) off on it,” coach Nick Sirianni said. “First of all, it’s all about the guys, right? It’s all about the guys up front, the tight ends, Jalen, the timing of everything. Obviously, won’t get into all the things that we do to prepare for it, but it’s not an easy play to practice, but our guys do a great job of simulating it as much as we possibly can.

“During practice, during walkthroughs, different things like that, creativity by our coaches to find ways to do that. As you can see, teams are going to do everything they can possibly do to stop it. Some of the things, I won’t get into that, either. I won’t give any other teams a clue to what they were doing. We’re prepared for all those things, and the guys are prepared for all those things. I think it always comes down to those guys up front and Jalen had a lot of success with that play. We’ll continue to use it to our advantage.”

If it becomes an unfair advantage because officials can't catch false starts, the NFL will have to address the problem.

This win gave Los Angeles coach Jim Harbaugh a victory over rival Las Vegas coach Pete Carroll, who turned 74 on Monday. The Chargers lost defensive end Khalil Mack to a left elbow injury in the first quarter. Herbert also led the Chargers in rushing with 31 yards. The Chargers' defense held the Raiders to 218 yards. About 4 in 10 people who follow sports “extremely” or “very” closely use both cable and satellite TV and a sports streaming platform. That's compared with about 2 in 10 people who follow sports “somewhat” closely.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies clinched their fourth straight postseason berth despite wasting a two-run lead Sunday in a 10-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals, who got a three-run homer and five RBIs from Salvador Perez.

Philadelphia became the second team assured of a playoffs spot when San Francisco lost later Sunday to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Phillies would have clinched their second consecutive NL East title with a victory but had to wait at least one more day for the division crown.

Philadelphia, which entered with a six-game winning streak, leads the NL East by 12 games over the second-place New York Mets.

Milwaukee clinched a playoff berth on Saturday.

Kyle Schwarber hit his NL-high 52nd homer for Philadelphia, which will in the postseason in four straight years for just the second time. The Phillies won five straight NL East titles from 2007-11.

Perez hit his third homer in two games, a three-run drive off Aaron Nola (4-9) in a four-run sixth that built a 6-2 lead. He added a two-run single in the seventh as the Royals ended a six-game losing streak.

Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto homered in the first off Noah Cameron (8-7), who allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings.ac Caglianone tied the score with a two-run homer in the fifth and Bobby Witt Jr. homered in the ninth against Max Lazar.

Royals closer Carlos Estévez got two outs in the ninth before leaving with mild back tightness.

Bryson Stott also homered for the Phillies.

Nola allowed six runs and six hits in six innings.

Witt led off the sixth with a triple off the high wall in right and scored on a double by Vinny Pasquantino, who had three hits.

Kansas City has been swept in series just four times this season, second-fewest in the AL.

Royals: Host Seattle and RHP Logan Gilbert (4-6, 3.54) in a series starting Tuesday.

Phillies clinch fourth straight playoff berth despite 10-3 loss to Royals, who get 5 RBIs from Perez

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw a pair of deep passes in&nbsp;the waning minutes of a 20-17 loss&nbsp;to the Philadelphia Eagles in their Super Bowl rematch Sunday. Both were intended for Tyquan Thornton, and together they told the story of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The first was simply an overthrow when Thornton was wide open, which would've gone for an easy touchdown. It seemed to characterize the way the Chiefs have been unable to get their once high-powered offense going. They managed just 294 yards against the Eagles in a display of offensive ineptitude that closely mimicked the big game last February.

The second was a completion to Thornton in the end zone. It was the first big play the Chiefs hit all game, and it came too late, epitomizing the close-but-not-good-enough way things are going for the AFC champs these days.

The Eagles recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock on the Chiefs' first home loss since Dec. 25, 2023.

“Keep playing hard,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said simply. “I'll take this one. Keep playing hard. Stick together.”

The Chiefs are now 0-2 for the first time since 2014, when Reid was in his second season in Kansas City. That also was the last time they failed to make the playoffs; they've reached at least the AFC title game the last seven seasons.

In the five seasons of an expanded 14-team playoff, only five of the 41 teams to start 0-2 made it into the postseason.

It's also the first time that Mahomes, one of the fiercest competitors in the NFL and perhaps all of sports, has been 0-2 since the 2011 season at Whitehouse High School in Texas. That was his sophomore season, the year before he became starting QB.

“We played two good football teams and made mistakes in big moments, stuff that we're not used to doing,” Mahomes said. “But I think we're coming together as a team. I mean, we deal with adversity. It's about how you deal with it. And obviously this isn't how we want to start, but how are we going to respond?”

The fact that both of those deep shots in the final minutes of the game went to Thornton also is telling. The Chiefs knew they would be without top wide receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-xavier-worthy-injury-d46f8bc7d58b086fbbb7286cd09dc257">Rashee Rice for the first six games</a>&nbsp;for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy, part of the fallout for his street-racing crash on a Dallas highway in March 2024. But they didn't know they would be down three of their four primary wide receivers with Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals both sidelined by injuries.

Worthy couldn't even make it through the first quarter of a season-opening loss to the Chargers in Brazil before dislocating his shoulder in a collision with teammate Travis Kelce. Royals has not made it on the field at all due to an knee injury.

The schedule hasn't done the Chiefs any favors, either.

They started off by traveling halfway around the world to play one of the up-and-coming teams in the AFC on foreign soil, rather than be rewarded with a home opener for its latest Super Bowl appearance. Then, they had to fly home for a rematch with a team that routed them 40-22 at the Superdome in New Orleans to deny them an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat.

The path gets a little easier, at least temporarily. The Chiefs visit the New York Giants next weekend for a matchup of winless teams. But then comes a stretch in which the Chiefs play at least four legitimate championship contenders in the Ravens, Lions, Commanders and Bills, and one that could ultimately determine the season before it even reaches the midway mark.

“It's not like we're missing by much,” Mahomes said. “I know it sucks for fans, but I feel like we're close. And so all we can do is just continue to work and continue to get after it and be ready.”

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because a final determination on Burrow’s treatment has not been made. Monday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

The 3rd ranked Barton Community College volleyball team split its four matches at the Sheila Worley Tournament over the weekend, sweeping a pair of opponents while falling to two nationally ranked foes.

Now 16-4 on the season, the Cougars have a much needed break before shifting attention back into conference play with a busy road stretch beginning Monday, September 22, at Pratt Community College. Two days later, Barton heads to 7th ranked Colby Community College before wrapping up the week Saturday at Garden City Community College.

Barton opened Friday with a 3–0 sweep over Laramie County Community College (25-21, 25-21, 25-18). The Cougars hit .221 as a team, led by 15 kills from&nbsp;Stasa Stamenkovic&nbsp;and a dominant .522 performance from&nbsp;Aubrey Olander&nbsp;tallying 14 kills and four blocks.&nbsp;Indigo Pruitt&nbsp;added six kills on .364 hitting, while libero&nbsp;Mina Kaneko&nbsp;anchored the defense with 23 digs.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ori Briger&nbsp;posted a 20-assist, 16-dig double-double with&nbsp;Mileah Neal&nbsp;running the backend of the 6-2 offense putting up 17 assists with five digs.

The afternoon session brought a top-10 clash as Barton fell in three tightly contested sets to No. 9 Odessa College (24-26, 23-25, 20-25). Despite the sweep, Barton posted 48 kills at a .228 clip, highlighted by Stamenkovic's 12 kills on .417 hitting. Pruitt continued her strong play with nine kills at .500 efficiency and five blocks, while Olander added six kills and five blocks. The Barton Community College women's soccer team dropped a 4–0 road decision Saturday afternoon at 20th ranked Butler Community College.

The Cougars fall to 1-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play, while Butler improves to 2-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.

Barton will return to the pitch on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m., taking on Garden City Community College at the FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays.

The Grizzlies struck early and never looked back, finding the net twice in the opening half before adding two more goals in the first five minutes after the break.

Barton generated 11 shots overall, including matching Butler's nine on frame, but couldn't solve the Grizzlies' goalkeeper Millie Robshaw-Charlesworth in suffering the shutout.

Freshman goalkeeper&nbsp;Leonie Kerle&nbsp;recorded five saves for the Cougars, while&nbsp;Sara Aguirre&nbsp;(five shots, three on goal) and&nbsp;Meane Martin Damiao&nbsp;(two shots on goal) led the attack.
