The 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team went 8-1 on the second day of the NJCAA Division I National Tennis Championships to send eight into the Quarterfinal round.

The Cougars were perfect in the six singles matches, winning two of the three doubles matches to stand in 3rd place of the team standings.

6th ranked Barton Men's Tennis send eight to National Quarterfinals

The Barton Community College baseball team was bounced to the consolation side of the Region VI/Plains District Tournament as the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons accounted for four of the final six runs edging out the Cougars 9-8 in 10-innings Tuesday afternoon at Kansas State University's Tointon Family Stadium.

Dropping to 41-17 on the year, second seeded Barton has a quick turnaround returning to Tointon Family Stadium for Wednesday's 11:30 a.m. elimination game against sixth seeded Cloud Community College.

Henry Hayman strung together the first of three straight two-out extra base hits with a double crossing for the opening run-on Dryden Howse RBI triple. Connor Allen capped the two-out rally with an RBI double four pitches later giving Barton a 2-0 edge.

Hutchinson countered back in the top of the second as back-to-back hits to open the frame cut the lead to one with a sacrifice fly two batters later tying it up at 2-2.

Benefitting off a leadoff Barton error and hit-by-pitch, the Blue Dragons broke the deadlock patching together their second consecutive two-run inning on a Jack Torosian RBI groundout and Hunter Gotreaux RBI single.

Not wasting time, a leadoff walk drawn by Howse and Allen's second double of the game kickstarted the Cougar offense in the bottom of the third. Pulling within one on a Shawn Marquis RBI groundout, three pitches later Caden Bressler brought the scoreboard even once more lacing his second straight single of the contest.

The Barton bats grasped a 5-4 edge in the fifth as Marquis second RBI game of the game coming on a sacrifice fly brought home a Howse leadoff walk.

Piecing together back-to-back singles to start the sixth, the Blue Dragons would knot it up for the third time on a Ryan Henderson one-out RBI single.

In the home sixth, Alex Rodgers needed just one pitch pushing the Cougars back out front 6-5 sending a two-out no-doubter over the left field fence for his fifth-round tripper of the season.

Battling back on two separate occasions prior, Hutchinson scraped back once more in the seventh as a leadoff single succeeded by a Cade Baker two-run blast pushed the Blue Dragons out front with an insurance run coming three batters later Ben McLaughlin's RBI double.

Trailing for just the second time, the Cougar bats answered the call in the bottom of the eighth as Wade Reynolds brought the deficit to one laying to rest a 0-for-16 skid roping a pinch-hit RBI double down the left field line bringing home a Bressler walk. One pitch later pinch runner Ethan Haufler pulled it back even advancing home on a wild pitch.

Facing a bases loaded jam with one-out in the ninth, Carson Cornelius and the Cougars escaped trouble turning their lone double-play.

Hitting into four double-plays on the afternoon, the big knock remained absent for the Cougar bats in the ninth, stranding the game winning run at third following a Hayman one-out hit-by-pitch, Howse single with a groundout extending the play into extra innings. 

Stranding 16 baserunners over the contest, Hutchinson benefited in the 10th as a pair of singles to open the inning and two-out walk fabricated the eventual game winning run on a Kael Babin bases loaded RBI walk.

Piecing the tying run and game winning run-on base following a leadoff Bressler walk, and Rodgers two-out walk, the Cougars rally attempt would fall short with a strikeout stranding the duo to end the comeback bid.

Starting pitcher Zach Thornton tossed four innings with five hits and two earned runs allowed. He struck out three and walked two in the no-decision effort.

Cornelius suffered the loss falling to 1-4 on the year working two innings with one run allowed, four walks and a strikeout.

Pounding out 11 hits, Allen pieced together a trio of hits with Howse and Bressler each producing 2-for-3 performances rounding out the multi-hit outings.

Blue Dragons beat Cougars in extra's at Region 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer outdueled Davis Martin as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Singer (1-0) had his best outing since last September 5, when he threw seven shutout innings against the White Sox. He struck out a career high nine batters and didn’t walk anyone. He allowed just four hits in seven innings.

Singer was added to the roster as the 27th man for the doubleheader, but it was much bigger than a spot start.

“That was one of those when they come back they want to show you something,” manager Mike Matheny said. “That’s exactly how you’re supposed to handle it. Every opportunity you get up here is special. He came back with a purpose.”

A normally stoic Singer smiled more than usual.

“It felt good,” he said. “The team was unbelievable. I felt like all three pitchers were there.

“I wanted to go out there and obviously do well, more for the team than anything.”

Josh Staumont earned his third save in five chances.

While Matheny would not promise another start for Singer, he did not shy away from how big this outing could be for the former first-round pick.

“He looked like a completely different pitcher,” Matheny said. “This could be one of those days that changes his career.”

Davis Martin (0-1) made his debut and was equally impressive. He allowed just one run on five hits in five innings, walking one and striking out seven.

The Royals finally capitalized in the second inning after going 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the first game. Emmanuel Rivera led off the inning with a double and scored on a Michael A. Taylor double into left field.

The Royals got another run in the sixth on M.J. Melendez’s first career home run, a 425-foot blast to right center.

“It was late in the game and we were up by one, I was trying to find a way to get on base,” Melendez said. “I’ve seen some balls hit really hard and not go out. I think the nighttime helped a little bit. It was a great feeling.”

The White Sox got a run in the eighth, but left fielder Andrew Benintendi threw out Josh Harrison as he tried to score from second on a single.

The White Sox won the first game behind clutch hitting by Jose Abreu and working around Kansas City offensive threats. Abreu’s two-out, two-run double keyed a three-run fifth inning.

“We only scored three ourselves,” manager Tony La Russa said. “The way I was taught to look at it is ‘What did they have to hit?’ If you don’t get pitches to hit, you don’t hit them. There were very few mistakes made in RBI situations.”

White Sox: Selected the contract of RHP Davis Martin from Triple-A Charlotte. He made his Major League debut. They also added RHP Kyle Crick as the 27th man on the roster for the doubleheader. The White Sox placed RHP Michael Kopech on the paternity list. To make room for Martin on the 40-man roster, the White Sox moved LHP Garrett Crochet to the 60-day IL.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State associate head coach Ulric Maligi was recently lauded as one of the nation's top men's basketball assistant coaches, as he was included on a list of the "Most Impactful High Major Assistant Coaches in Division I Basketball" by Silver Waves Media.

The honor was another in a long list for Maligi, who was hired as the Wildcats' associate head coach on April 1. He was recognized by both ESPN and The Athletic on their "40 under 40" lists for the top individuals in college basketball. He was listed 14th on The Athletic's 40 under 40" list by Seth Davis which acknowledged the rising stars under the age of 40 in November 2021, while a group of ESPN writers selected him 13th on their list of top coaches under the age of 40 in May 2020.

"When I began the process of building my staff, Ulric was at top of my list," said first-year head coach Jerome Tang upon hiring Maligi. "He is not only one of the best recruiters that I have ever been around, but he is one of the top basketball minds in the country, having learned from some of the best in the business. In addition to his talents as a coach, he is also an outstanding husband and father."

An assistant coach with 15 years of experience and deep ties to the state of Texas, Maligi came to K-State after a three-year stint with head coach Chris Beard at both Texas Tech (2019-21) and Texas (2021-22). In addition to his time with the Red Raiders and Longhorns, he has also been an assistant at UT-Arlington (2006-07), Stephen F. Austin (2007-10), Houston (2010-12), SMU (2012-15) and Texas A&amp;M (2016-19).

All told, Maligi has been a part of coaching staffs that have won 300 games – averaging 20 wins per season in his coaching career – and advanced to the postseason on eight occasions, including five NCAA Tournaments (2009, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2022). He has also helped teams register eight 20-win seasons, including at least one at five of his seven stops, and collect five conference titles. In addition to his coaching experience, he also spent a year (2015-16) as the National Scouting Director for John Lucas Enterprises based in Houston.

Maligi has coached and/or recruited 18 NBA players in his coaching career, including Robert Williams III (Boston Celtics/Texas A&amp;M), Danuel House, Jr. (Utah Jazz/Texas A&amp;M), Shake Milton (Philadelphia 76ers/SMU) and Jahmi'us Ramsey (Sacramento Kings/Texas Tech). In all, he has also helped sign 20 prospects ranked among the top 100 recruits in the country.

In his short time at K-State, Maligi has already helped attract three highly regarded transfers in Cam Carter (Donaldsonville, La./Oak Hill Academy/Mississippi State), Jerrell Colbert (Houston, Texas/Houston [Tenn.]/LSU) and Nae'Qwan Tomlin (New York, N.Y./Urban Assembly School/Chipola [Fla.] College) as well as high school standouts Dorian Finister (New Orleans, La./Carver) and Taj Manning (Grandview, Mo./La Lumiere [Ind.]).

The 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team got off to a good start on day one of the NJCAA Division I National Tennis Championships, winning both of their schedule matches at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center in Tyler, Texas.

The Cougars are seeded in seven of their nine entries, leaving two in beginning their National quest in the opening round.

In the morning session, Tsholofelo Tsiang opened up No. 6 singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Edward Shteyn of Collin College.

Returning for the afternoon season to team up with Samyak Bajracharya in the No. 3 doubles, the duo dispatched Alvaro Saint Martin/Emilio Vila of Tyler Junior College 6-0, 6-1.

The two are joined by the rest of the Cougars for day two's 2nd Round action beginning at 8:00 a.m. with the No. 1 and 2 singles play of Gustavo Campos and fellow 6th seed James Kaoma.  At 9:15 a.m. time, 7th seed No. 3 Eduardo Morais and 3rd seed No. 4 Barnabas Kalaba get started, being followed at 10:30 a.m. by 5th seed Bajracharya at the No. 5 singles and Tsiang back on the court at the No. 6.

The No. 1 and 2 doubles action begins at noon, Campos/Morais as the 6th seed in the top spot with Kaoma/Barnabas wearing the 3rd seed target in the second flight.  Bajracharya/Tsiang return for their match at 1:15 p.m. in the No. 3 duo flight.

NJCAA Plains District (Region VI) Championship Pairings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals fired hitting coach Terry Bradshaw and promoted Alex Zumwalt to fill his role Monday in a shakeup of the coaching staff that they hope will wake up one of the worst offenses in the majors this season.

The Royals have scored 118 runs through their first 32 games, better only than the Tigers, Orioles and White Sox, and their 21 home runs trail only the Tigers and Red Sox for the worst total in the big leagues.

The Royals began the day 12-20 and 6 1/2 games behind the Twins in the AL Central.

“Baseball is constantly shifting and we have to continue to self-evaluate and make sure we’re giving our players everything they need to be successful at the highest levels,” Royals general manager JJ Picollo said in a statement. “Our results so far haven’t matched what we’re capable of, and we all share accountability in that.”

Zumwalt was hired as a scout in 2011 but more recently has spearheaded a shift in hitting development within the Royals’ minor league program. The results last season were evident in Bobby Witt Jr. earning the Minor League Player of the Year award from Baseball American and MJ Melendez taking the Joe Bauman Award as the minor league home run champ.

Both of those players are with the big league club this season.

Keoni DeRenne will remain the assistant hitting coach and Mike Tosar the special assignment hitting coach.

“Changes like this are never easy and I’m grateful to Terry for his friendship and all he’s done for me personally and for our team,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said before opening a four-day, five-game set against the White Sox. “We can all do better, and that includes me. I’m confident that better days are ahead, and that Alec, Keoni and Mike will help us get there.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Robert hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning after Johnny Cueto’s impressive Chicago debut, and the White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Monday night in the opener of a five-game series.

Yasmani Grandal also had a two-run shot for the White Sox, who squandered a 3-0 lead in the eighth.

“It was an important win for us,” manager Tony La Russa said.

Robert connected off Scott Barlow (2-1) with two outs, scoring the automatic runner as well.

“I was just looking to make good contact and drive in that run,” Robert said. “The first pitch he threw me was a breaking ball. I was prepared for a fastball, but he threw me a breaking ball. I just hit it hard.”

The 36-year-old Cueto pitched six shutout innings in his first major league start this season after getting promoted from Triple-A Charlotte. He allowed just two hits and two walks, striking out seven. Only one runner reached second base against him.

“That’s the Johnny Cueto you’ve seen,” La Russa said. “He’s so deceptive. His fastball plays harder. He spots it. He’s down with a soft one and then he throws one by you. That shows you his talent. The number one thing we needed from him was to give us a chance to win. To go six shutout innings is more than you can (hope for). But you can’t be surprised. That’s what he has been his whole career.”

Cueto, a two-time All-Star, made his first appearance on the Kauffman Stadium mound since throwing a two-hitter for Kansas City against the New York Mets to win Game 2 of the 2015 World Series. He was acquired from Cincinnati just before the trade deadline that year and played a key role in the Royals’ championship.

“Throughout my career I have always put special emphasis on my first start of the season,” Cueto said. “I did it today. I was excited. I was facing a young team, a team that I used to play with. I knew this was a good team, too.”

The White Sox got their first run on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Vaughn in the third. Adam Engel led off with a fly ball that dropped between left fielder Andrew Benintendi and center fielder Michael A. Taylor. Engel then stole second and scored on Vaughn’s fly to right.

Grandal made it 3-0 when he lined an 0-2 pitch into the right-field bullpen. He drove in Robert, who extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games with an infield single.

The Royals tied it in the eighth against Kendall Graveman. Whit Merrifield lined a two-run double off the wall in left-center. He went to third on the throw home and scored on a single by Benintendi.

Chicago selected Cueto’s contract and optioned INF Danny Mendick to Charlotte. Cueto agreed to a minor league deal with the White Sox in April. His contract includes a $4 million salary in the majors and a $210,000 salary in the minors. He went 0-1 with a 5.17 ERA in four starts with Charlotte.

Cueto spent the past six seasons with San Francisco, going 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA in 22 games, 21 starts, for the Giants last year.

The teams play a scheduled split doubleheader Tuesday.

The White Sox will send RHP Dylan Cease (3-1, 3.55 ERA) to the mound in the opener and wait until after that game to determine who gets the ball for the nightcap. La Russa said it’s possible RHP Lucas Giolito (2-1, 2.70) could return from the COVID-19 injured list.

DENVER (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals recovered from blowing a six-run lead to beat the Colorado Rockies 8-7 on Sunday.

Bobby Witt Jr., Whit Merrifield and Emmanuel Rivera homered for the Royals, who took two of three from the Rockies.

Colorado overcame a 6-0 deficit by scoring seven times in the seventh.

Andrew Benintendi drew a leadoff walk from Rockies closer Daniel Bard (1-1) in the ninth and Ryan O’Hearn singled. A wild pitch and a one-out walk to Michael A. Taylor loaded the bases for Perez, who laced a single to left field.

“He’s got that clutch gene factor,” Witt said of Perez. “You kind of had a feeling he’s going to do something. Bases loaded, he just always stays calm, always same guy and just went up there did his job.”

Josh Staumont (1-0) pitched the eighth inning and Scott Barlow got three outs for his fourth save.

“Sum it up, I’d say it’s the best win of the year,” manager Mike Matheny said. “It could have been the worst loss of the year when you have a start like that.”

Colorado’s Yonathan Daza continued his hot stretch with two hits and sparked the seventh-inning rally. He has an eight-game hitting streak that has raised his average 28 points to .383.

Kansas City starter Daniel Lynch tossed 5 1/3 shutout innings and left with a comfortable lead.

“I felt like I had to try to mix really well because if they can get a comfortable swing off then there’s a better chance of damage happening,” Lynch said. “I didn’t really feel like I had great stuff today but I just tried to do my best to mix and try to keep them off balance.”

Rivera’s first homer of the season put Kansas City ahead 2-0 and Merrifield led off the sixth with his second of the season against Rockies starter Austin Gomber.

Gomber allowed three runs on four hits in six innings before giving way to Jhoulys Chacín to start the seventh. Witt greeted him with his third homer.

Rivera had an RBI double and then scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.

The lead was wiped out by Colorado’s big seventh inning against three relievers. Daza knocked in the first two with a single, C.J. Cron drove in another with a single and an error allowed a fourth run to score.

Randal Grichuk tied it with a single and Elías Díaz, who started the inning with a hit, put the Rockies ahead 7-6 with a sacrifice fly.

“You’ve just got to move on and try to win the next inning,” Witt said. “That inning’s over whenever the third out is made and so we kind of moved on from there.”

The Royals came into Denver looking to get their offense going after being shut out twice and held to one run two other times in the first half of May.

Kansas City put up 26 runs in the three-game series.

“We came on this road trip anticipating that we were going get some things going,” Matheny said. “One of the things was the offense. We saw the offense start to put some things together and some guys walking out of here with some confidence.”

Rockies: OF Kris Bryant (back) is scheduled to play two rehab games with Triple-A Albuquerque this week and then be reevaluated with the hope he can return for the weekend series against the New York Mets. Bryant has not played since April 25 at Philadelphia.

About two dozen states also have laws regarding athlete compensation. The laws, however, have no enforcement mechanisms. There has been no indication so far that a state attorney general or prosecutor will go after a booster organization striking deals with athletes.
