PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona’s familiarity with Zack Greinke led to a solid offensive night against the Diamondbacks’ former pitcher.

Christian Walker and Pavin Smith homered and Ketel Marte’s two-run double broke a fourth-inning tie to help the Diamondbacks beat Kansas City 9-5 Monday night in Greinke’s first appearance at Chase Field since he left at the 2019 trade deadline after 3 1/2 seasons in Arizona.

Greinke (0-3) gave up seven earned runs, two homers and four walks, all single-game highs this season.

“I think we know the things that he likes to do and the areas he likes to attack,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “He’s a creature of habit. It’s worked very well for a long time and he’s not going to make adjustments unless he has to. I know that his changeup wasn’t landing, and we saw that it wasn’t landing early, and that was a big advantage for us.”

Whit Merrifield, Bobby Witt Jr. and Hunter Dozier hit bases-empty homers 13 pitches into the game, and the Royals added another run in the first inning for a 4-0 lead before suffering their second demoralizing loss in as many days.

Kansas City, which has lost five in a row and seven of nine, failed to hold a 6-0 lead after seven innings in a 7-6 home loss to Minnesota on Sunday.

Smith and Walker homered in the last of the first to cut the Kansas City lead to 4-3, and Arizona tied it at 5-all in third inning when Greinke walked the first two he faced and both scored.

“The game started off, the ball seemed like it was flying, a lot of home runs being hit,” Greinke said. “And then had some close pitches called balls and kind of got scared to throw strikes a little bit. I think is what happened.”

Marte’s two-out double off Joel Payamps drove in two for a 7-5 lead, both runs changed to Greinke.

The Diamondbacks had eight runs against Greinke in nine innings in his two previous starts against them, both in Houston.

“It was great, especially against a guy with that kind of repertoire and that sort of reputation,” Smith said of the approach against Greinke. “Especially going down 4-nothing in the first inning, we wanted to see some pitches and grind out some good ABs.”

J.B. Wendelken (1-1) got out of a bases-loaded situation after replacing injured starter Zach Davies in the fourth inning for the Diamondbacks, who have won four of five.

Davies gave up eight hits and five runs before being knocked out of the game with a right leg contusion when he was struck by Witt’s line drive that loaded the bases with two outs.

X-rays on Davies were negative and he is to get a C-T scan Tuesday, Lovullo said, calling into question his availability for his next start Sunday.

Greinke joined the Diamondbacks on a six-year, $206.5 million contract in 2016, when his average yearly salary of $34.4 million was the highest in major league history.

Greinke had given up two homers and four walks in his first eight starts over 44 innings this season. He struck out a season-high five.

Arizona first baseman Christian Walker is playing both sides of the ball. He hit his 11th home run to tie for the NL lead with Colorado’s C.J. Cron.

Walker entered Monday’s game leading major league first basemen with seven “defensive runs saved,” as calculated by Sports Info Solutions. Kansas City’s Carlos Santana was tied for second with three. Walker was a Gold Glove finalist in 2019.

Merrifield stole a run for a 5-3 lead after singling to lead off the second inning. He stole second base with a head-first slide, and when a one-hop throw got away broke toward an uncovered third.

Geraldo Perdomo sailed a throw past third base and Merrifield got up from a head-first slide up beat a throw home, this time going in feet first.

Royals: OF Michael Taylor (undisclosed) missed his fifth straight game and has no timetable to return.

Smith, Walker homers spoil Greinke’s return to Arizona, 9-5

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt hit a walkoff grand slam in
the 10th inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-3 victory over the
Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto fell to 1-2 in extra innings games. The Cardinals
improved to 1-1. Genesis Cabrera was the fifth St. Louis pitcher and pitched
the 10th inning to pick up the victory. It was the first walkoff grand slam in
St. Louis since April 27, 2017, when Matt Carpenter hit one against Toronto.
George Springer homered for Toronto, which fell to 1-2 in extra-inning games.

Donaldson for one game after the New York Yankees slugger made multiple
references to Jackie Robinson while talking to White Sox star Tim Anderson on
Saturday. Donaldson also was fined an undisclosed amount. The punishment was
announced Monday by Michael Hill, the senior vice president of on-field
operations for MLB. Donaldson has elected to appeal the penalty. Shortly before
the suspension was announced, the Yankees said Donaldson had been put on the
COVID-19 injured list. AL East-leading New York is slated to open a three-game
series against Baltimore, and then head to Tampa Bay for a four-game set
beginning on Thursday.

earlier this offseason. Foles got a two-year deal after spending the past two

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gio Urshela hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning to complete Minnesota’s comeback from a six-run deficit, lifting the Twins over the Kansas City Royals 7-6 Sunday.

“That win was pretty special,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “It was special in the way it came together, the number of contributors.”

Down 6-0, the Twins scored five times in the eighth, capped by Kyle Garlick’s two-run homer.

Jorge Polanco drew a leadoff walk from Josh Staumont (1-1) in the ninth, Max Kepler doubled and Gary Sanchez tied it with his second sacrifice fly in two innings. With two outs, Urshela singled for the lead.

“It was great last two innings as a team we were taking good at-bats which is very important for us,” Urshela said. “There was good energy in the dugout going into the ninth and we were able to fight back.”

Ryan (5-2) allowed one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts.

“It was a good game overall,” Ryan said. “The boys brought good run support, which takes a lot of pressure off.”

Minnesota had a pair of two-run innings and was ahead going into the ninth, when the offense erupted — including two-run double by Carlos Correa. The top six batters in the Twins lineup all collected RBIs in the win, and Minnesota’s Luis Arráez had two RBIs and scored on a wild pitch.

“I thought we battled through the beginning of the game, but we stayed on them and but some good swings on the ball,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “Overall, it was a great offensive effort and just what we were looking for.”

Brad Keller (1-4) tossed seven innings for the Royals, giving up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. He also notched his 400th career strikeout in the sixth inning.

Royals manager Mike Matheny said Keller “made really good pitches all evening long and pitched well enough to give us a chance to win.”

Emmanuel Rivera hit his second home run of the series with a solo shot in the seventh, and Andrew Benintendi went 3 for 3 with a walk and an RBI for the Royals.

Kansas City entered the game batting .154 with bases loaded and came up empty in its lone opportunity in the sixth, trailing 4-1 at the time. The Royals left eight on base overall.

Twins: Selected the contract of LHP Trevor Megill from Triple-A St. Paul and optioned LHP Devin Smeltzer to Triple-A. Minnesota also designated RHP Chris Vallimont for assignment.

During the 2000-21 season, KU defeated then-No. 8 Creighton, 73-72, inside Allen Fieldhouse on December 8, 2020. The Jayhawks are 2-1 all-time in the Big 12-BIG EAST Battle, with Kansas’ sole loss coming at then-No. 18 Villanova, 55-56, on December 21, 2019.

Kansas to Host Seton Hall in Big 12-BIG EAST Battle

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's basketball team will play host to longtime rival Nebraska in the Wildcat Classic on Saturday, December 17 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.

Tickets will be available for season ticket holders to purchase during the renewal process starting Monday, June 6. Tickets for the general public and K-State students will go on sale later this fall.

Tickets for season ticket holders are priced at $150 for courtside, $40 for lower-level sides, $25 for lower-level corners and $15 for lower-level ends and upper-level sides at the T-Mobile Center.

The game will be the second in a 3-game series between the former conference foes after the Wildcats earned a 67-58 win over the Cornhuskers at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska on December 19, 2021. The schools were supposed to open the series at the T-Mobile Center on December 19, 2020, but it was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The final game is scheduled for Bramlage Coliseum during the 2023-24 season.

The two schools, which have played 220 games through five conferences (Missouri Valley, Big Six, Big Seven, Big Eight and Big 12), have a rivalry that started more than 100 years ago with a 50-14 victory by Nebraska on February 19, 1906. The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 127-93. The 220 meetings represent the fourth-longest series in school history, following Kansas (297), Missouri (237) and Iowa State (235).

The game will mark the 11th Wildcat Classic game at the T-Mobile Center and the first since 2019. Saint Louis snapped K-State's 5-game winning streak in the Classic with a 66-63 victory on December 21, 2019. The Wildcats are 20-20 all-time in the arena, including an 8-2 mark in the Wildcat Classic.

K-State and Nebraska have met in Kansas City 22 times with the Wildcats holding a 19-3 advantage. The schools faced off 16 times in the Big Six/Seven/Eight Holiday Tournament between 1944-77 and then on 6 more occasions in the Big Eight/12 Championship between 1979-2001. K-State has won 9 straight games against Nebraska in the city with the last Cornhusker victory coming in the 1967 Big Eight Holiday Tournament at Municipal Auditorium.

K-State will be led by first-year head coach Jerome Tang, who was hired by the school on March 21 after a 19-year stint in helping build Baylor into a national powerhouse. The Wildcats are expected to return All-Big 12 honorable mention selection Markquis Nowell (12.4 ppg., 5.0 apg.) and junior Ish Massoud (6.8 ppg., 2.8 rpg.) in 2022-23. The team has signed five additional players, including transfers Cam Carter (Mississippi State), Jerrell Colbert (LSU) and Nae'Qwan Tomlin (Chipola College) and incoming freshmen Dorian Finister and Taj Manning.

Nebraska ended the 2021-22 season on a high note with three wins in their last four games – including road wins over nationally ranked Wisconsin and Ohio State – to finish with a 10-22 overall record, including a 4-16 mark in Big Ten play. Lady Panther State Swimming Results

KANSAS CITY, Mo (AP) — Kyle Garlick and Jose Miranda each drove in two runs, leading Devin Smeltzer and the Minnesota Twins past the Kansas City Royals 6-4 on Friday night.

Garlick put Minnesota on the scoreboard with an RBI single in a three-run first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the second. He was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the fourth.

Miranda had two hits, including a two-run double with two outs in the eighth that made it 6-3.

“It felt great getting that first hit out of the way,” Miranda said. “Then getting the second one in a clutch situation when the team needed me, it just felt great to come through.”

Smeltzer (1-0) allowed one run and five hits over 5 1/3 innings, throwing 74 pitches in his second major league start this season. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.

“Smeltzer was excellent,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He is helping us win ballgames, which is all he cares about and all we care about. But he was efficient and did a really nice job.”

Jhoan Duran worked 1 2/3 hitless innings to set up Emilio Pagán for his sixth save. Pagán gave up three hits in the ninth, including Emmanuel Rivera’s solo homer.

Carlos Santana also had a solo shot for the Royals, ending an 0-for-21 slump.

Gary Sánchez hit an RBI double in the Twins first and Gio Urshela added a sacrifice fly.

Royals starter Daniel Lynch (2-3) gave up four runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

“(Lynch) was having some trouble finishing tonight and there was a reason for that,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “He had some tightness come up in his back and felt good enough to pitch, but it was something he had to work through. ... We tried to help him figure out a way to get through it and he got better as he went.”

Santana went deep in the seventh, and Whit Merrifield’s sacrifice fly trimmed it 4-3.

2A-1A Baseball State Tournament Starts in Great Bend May 26-27

Bids for title berths came to an end Thursday in Tyler, Texas, as the 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team had its final entries knocked out of the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships.

The Cougars leave Tyler, Texas in fourth place of the team standings with 28 points headed to Friday's final day of action. Fellow Region VI members Seward County Community College and Cowley College are battling for the team title at 42 and 41 points respectively in being chased by Tyler Junior College in third with 39 points. Chasing Barton for the fourth spot are Collin College with 27 points and ABAC with 24 points.

The lone singles player to survive into the semifinals, No. 4 flight's 3rd seeded Barnabas Kalaba's battle came up short by 6-4 twin set losses to 2nd seeded Gaston Erhardt of Cowley. Erhardt advances into Friday's championship match against the top seed Emilio Vila of Tyler.

Kalaba's second chance shot at the title match was also derailed in the afternoon's No. 2 flight semifinals. Teaming with James Kaoma, the 3rd seeded duo fell 6-3, 6-2 to 2nd seeded Diego Dalisay and Tim Riedel of Tyler to conclude Barton's stay in Texas. The Apache duo moves on to Friday's championship match to take on Cowley's top seeded pair of Gaston Erhardt and Boruch Skierier.

Eisenhower beats Panthers 8-5 in Regional title game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Robert homered and drove in four runs as the Chicago White Sox rallied past the Kansas City Royals 7-4 Thursday to win the five-game series.

Robert delivered a pair of RBI singles before hitting a two-run homer into the left field stands in the eighth. His sixth home run of the season capped Chicago’s sixth come-from-behind win.

“I was trying to not strike out,” Robert said. “I was just trying to put the ball in play. I was expecting a fastball and he just made a mistake and I took advantage of it.”

Pinch-hitter Adam Engel gave the White Sox their first lead with an RBI single in the seventh off Gabe Speier (0-1) that broke a 4-all tie.

“Guys at first and third, I was already in a good situation there,” Engel said. “Just had to put the ball in play and keep it up the middle there the best that I can. In order to do that I just looked for a pitch over the plate and tried not do too much.”

Tim Anderson had two hits, two walks, two RBIs, and stole two bases, recording his 10th multi-hit outing in his last 18 games.

“I was just trying to get a run in and get that egg off the board,” Anderson said of stealing second and third ahead of Robert’s first RBI single, opening the White Sox scoring in the third. “I was being myself, playing my game, and having fun while doing it. Just putting us in the best position to be successful.”

Said Chicago manager Tony La Russa: “He’s very special. He’s as special as our fans think he is. The more people around the country that know it, the better.”

Chicago took three of five from the Royals. It was the first five-game series at Kauffman Stadium since Chicago also won three of five in April 2018.

Bennett Sousa (2-0) earned the victory as four Chicago relievers held Kansas City scoreless over the final four innings. Liam Hendriks worked around a pair of singles for his 12th save.

Hunter Dozier had three hits and drove in three runs for the Royals. He had a two-run homer in the first and an RBI single in the third.

Kansas City scored in each of the first three innings against Vince Velasquez, recording an extra-base hit in each frame. He went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits, fanning three.

“It seemed like my stuff was working very well today, but they were just guessing right,” Velasquez said. “Dozier was hunting fastballs the whole time. I could have been a bit better with executing fastballs up at the top of the zone. I’m not really happy with the outing.”

Royals starter Carlos Hernandez struggled with his control, walking five and allowing five hits in three-plus innings.

“(Hernandez’s) tempo was a little bit slow,” Royals catcher Sebastian Rivero said. “He was trying to think on too many things at one time. He was not feeling the ball. He couldn’t grip it the way he wanted to. The ball wasn’t doing what he wanted.”

Chicago loaded the bases on consecutive hits to start the fourth before Anderson hit a two-run single, driving Hernandez from the mound.

With the automatic runner on second, Alonso drove the second pitch from Giovanny Gallegos into the left field second deck for his third career game-ending home run. MIAMI (AP) — Marcus Smart was a rebound shy of a triple-double, finishing with 24 points and 12 assists as the Boston Celtics hammered the Heat, 127-102 in Miami to even the NBA’s Eastern Conference finals at a game apiece. Smart also was 5 of 12 from downtown as the Celtics drained 20 of their 40 3-point attempts. Jayson Tatum had a team-high 27 points for Boston, which led by 25 at halftime.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Ross Colton scored with just 3.8 seconds left in regulation, giving the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 victory and a two-games-to-none lead in their Stanley Cup second-round series with the Florida Panthers. Tampa Bay had just killed off a penalty to Steven Stamkos when Colton scored right in front of Sergei Bobrovsky. The penalty kill also left Florida 0-for-25 on the power play this postseason.

DENVER (AP) — The St. Louis Blues have also knotted their Stanley Cup second-round series at a game apiece as David Perron scored twice, including the game-winner in a 4-1 victory at Colorado. Perron’s power-play goal put St. Louis ahead, 2-0 with 34 seconds remaining in the second period. He also delivered the insurance goal midway through the third period after Gabriel Landeskog netted a power-play goal to draw the Avalanche within 2-1.

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Rory McIlroy blasted his driver over trees and into fairways, setting up some of his seven birdies that carried him to a 5-under 65 and a one-stroke lead through one round of the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa. This was McIlroy’s lowest start to par since a 5-under 66 when he won the PGA at Valhalla in 2014, the last of his four majors. Will Zalatoris and Tom Hoge are at 4 under, one shot ahead of Matt Kuchar, Justin Thomas and Abraham Ancer.

As Barton's top three singles entries went down in the 8:00 a.m. Quarterfinals, No. 4 flight Barnabas Kalaba marched on to the National Semifinals as the 3rd seed defeated 6th seeded Maxime Guyon (Pratt) 6-1, 6-0. Next up will be an 8:00 a.m. Thursday tangle with 2nd seeded Gaston Erhardt (Cowley) to earn the right into Friday's championship match.

In the afternoon session, Kalaba joined No. 2 flight doubles partner James Kaoma in defeating 6th seeded Adrien Gulbert and Djordje Kurcubic (Collin College) 6-2, 7-6(1).
