AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jason Bean passed for 287 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown to Lawrence Arnold after Iowa State pulled within three points in the fourth quarter, and the No. 22 Jayhawks held off the Cyclones for a 28-21 victory Saturday night.

The Jayhawks (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) won consecutive conference games for the first time since 2008. They also reached the seven-win benchmark and won in Ames for the first time since that ’08 season.

“This is a great college environment,” Bean said of Iowa State’s Jack Trice Stadium. “It’s a tough environment for any team to come in and play.”

Iowa State (5-4, 4-2) began the day in a five-way tie for first place in the Big 12, but the Cyclones’ comeback bid came up short after they trailed 21-3 with 9:24 left in the third quarter.

“We never put our head down,” Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht said. “We kept fighting. That’s what I love about this team.”

Bean completed 14 of 23 passes, his biggest one to Arnold giving Kansas a 10-point cushion right after Iowa State had scored to make it 21-18. Arnold got behind the secondary to make the catch at the 50 and ran the rest of the way untouched.

“It was a play we worked on all week,” Bean said. “I felt like all game we were baiting them to come down low enough to get past them on that play. I delivered the ball to (Arnold) and he did the rest.”

A field goal got the Cyclones within 28-21 with 4:53 left. The Jayhawks were able to pick up two first downs on their final possession to run out the clock.

“We don’t get too high. We don’t get too low,” said Arnold, who finished with 112 yards on three catches. “It was just keeping your composure and making sure we did what we had to.”

Kansas’ Devin Neal scored the first of his two touchdowns on the game’s opening series, capping a nine-play, 87-yard drive.

Mello Dotson returned an interception 50 yards for Kansas’ second touchdown, and his second pick-six in two games. The Jayhawks missed two field goals before Iowa State trimmed the margin to 14-3 on Chase Contreraz’s 35-yard kick before halftime.

Neal’s second touchdown completed a 75-yard drive to start the third quarter and gave Kansas a 21-3 lead.

“I feel like it was a lack of detail on our part,” Cyclone receiver Jaylin Noel said of Iowa State’s slow start. “Just little things. Jumping offsides, holding personal fouls. It’s hard to win when you get those type of penalties.”

The first two times Kansas was in the Top 25 this season, it lost its next game. The Jayhawks should stay in the rankings a second straight week.

Kansas' Dotson appeared woozy after hitting his head while making a diving tackle of Dimitri Stanley with 10 seconds left in the first half. Athletic trainers tended to Dotson on the field for a few minutes, but he was able to walk off the field on his own.

Bean grabbed the back of his left leg after ISU’s Will McLaughlin hit him low after he threw a pass in the second half. No. 3 quarterback Cole Ballard came on to take one snap.

Iowa State's defense neutralized the top running back duo in the Power Five. Neal and Daniel Hishaw came into Saturday with a combined 1,259 rushing yards on the season but netted a combined 86 yards on 30 carries. Neal ended up with 57 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The Wildcats forced overtime on Chris Tennant's 45-yard field goal with 1 second left. Tennant had earlier missed a short chance to tie with 1:45 to play.

Texas went nowhere on its first possession of overtime before Auburn's go-ahead kick. Kansas State then drove to the Texas 6. Three consecutive plays gained only 2 yards before the Wildcats went for the win instead of the tie and another overtime. Howard was pressured and was slipping down when he lofted a pass that was easily batted down.

The win keeps Texas atop the league standings with an eye on the Big 12 championship game and the program's first league title since 2009.

“Versatility, resilience, perseverance ... those are all qualities championship teams have,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “They can make plays at critical moments.”

Jonathon Brooks ran for 112 yards and a touchdown for Texas, which also got a 54-yard scoring run early from C.J. Baxter.

Howard passed for 327 yards and four touchdowns for the Wildcats, two of them to Phillip Brooks.

Texas appeared in total control midway through the third quarter until consecutive turnovers — an interception and fumble — set up two quick Howard touchdown passes.

“It tested us. It tested our resilience," Sarkisian said. “It tested our culture to stick together.”

Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said he would still go for the win in overtime instead of a field goal tie if given another chance.

“Our kids always believe we have a shot,” Klieman said. “I’m upset that we lost, but watching what our guys were able to do in the second half was pretty special.”

Kansas State: The Wildcats stubbornly stuck to a running game that was going nowhere in the first half as Texas steadily built its lead. Even when they rotated in speedy freshman quarterback Avery Johnson, his first full series produced three consecutive handoffs instead of letting him probe for an opening. The Wildcats moved the ball through the air on a short scoring drive in the second quarter before opening up the offense on Howard's passing in the second half.

Texas: Maalik Murphy has managed the last two games at quarterback for Texas but has been erratic and struggled with accuracy and turnovers Saturday. Late defensive stand lifts No. 7 Texas over No. 25 Kansas State 33-30 in OT

The Chiefs and Dolphins are preparing to meet on Sunday in Frankfurt, Germany. It will be the first time they have faced Miami wide receiver Tyreek Hill since they traded him early last year. The Big 12 on Wednesday released four years of football opponents for its newly expanded 16-team conference, including a yearly BYU-Utah game and an emphasis on other in-state rivalries.

The Big 12 adds Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah from the Pac-12 in 2024 while saying goodbye to Oklahoma and Texas. The Sooners and Longhorns are joining the Southeastern Conference.

“As we look towards the future of this Conference, we are thrilled to introduce the first football scheduling matrix for the new-look Big 12," Commissioner Brett Yormark said in a statement. "In this model, competitive balance and student-athlete wellness was prioritized. Rivalries will be protected and new matchups will be introduced — the excitement and parity this Conference is known for will continue for years to come.”

Big 12 teams will play nine conference games per season and every member will play at least one home-and-home with the other 15 schools over the next four years. Dates of games will be released later.

The BYU-Utah rivalry is one of the most intense in college football, but the two have not competed in the same conference since they both left the Mountain West in 2011. The Cougars and Utes have played nine times since, though not this season — BYU's first as a member of the Big 12 after being a football independent.

Next year's BYU-Utah game is scheduled to be played in Salt Lake City. The rest of Utah's home schedule includes Arizona, TCU and Iowa State.

The other annual protected rivalries in the Big 12 will be Kansas-Kansas State, Baylor-TCU and Arizona-Arizona State.

Colorado's return to the Big 12 will be marked by home games against Utah, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Cincinnati. The Buffaloes were an original member of the Big 12 but left for the Pac-12 in 2011. CU announced its return to the conference this past summer in a move that helped trigger the demise of the Pac-12.

Arizona's 2024 schedule includes home games against Arizona State, Colorado, Houston, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

No. 7 Texas and No. 25 Kansas State meet in big clash of leaders in the Big 12

The Big 12 championship game could still turn into a farewell party for seventh-ranked Texas and No. 10 Oklahoma, and one more meeting of the Red River rivals before changing leagues next year.

But while the Longhorns (7-1, 4-1, No. 7 CFP) and Sooners (7-1, 4-1, No. 9 CFP) begin November tied for the Big 12 lead, the Southeastern Conference-bound teams aren't alone atop the standings. They are part of a five-way tie with defending Big 12 champ and No. 25 Kansas State (6-2, 4-1), Oklahoma State (6-2, 4-1) and Iowa State (5-3, 4-1).

"We’re starting to find that I think our league is probably a little stronger than people give it credit for in early September ... and maybe some of these other leagues aren’t quite as strong,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “Our league is tough.”

No other FBS league has such a logjam at the top of the standings. The closest is the American Athletic Conference with a three-way tie. The SEC and the Big Ten both have two teams without a league loss: the SEC teams in the same division, and both Big Ten division leaders are unbeaten in conference play.

The Big 12 will be down to no more than three at the top after Saturday, after two games matching co-leaders. Oklahoma plays at Oklahoma State in the last scheduled Bedlam game, while Kansas State plays at Texas. Iowa State, the other co-leader, is home against No. 22 Kansas (6-2, 3-2), which is coming off its first win over the Sooners since 1997.

“We can predict how it’s going to start or the preseason things of who should be where. You got to play these games and you got to see who’s developed and you got to see the teams that may be either playing some freshmen, playing some newer players and how they fit into each team’s system,” K-State coach Chris Klieman said. “And it’s fun to see that. For the most part, the games that we have in November are really meaningful games against really good teams.”

The top two teams in the Big 12 standings play in the title game Dec. 2 at the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. There are four more Saturdays with no more open dates to sort out everything.

With the league now at 14 teams, and increasing to 16 next year, there is no longer a round-robin schedule. Some complicated tiebreaker procedures could come into play to determine the championship matchup since not every team plays each other, and there is no guaranteed rematch.

The only time since 1903 that Oklahoma and Texas played twice in the same season was in 2018, their lone meeting in a Big 12 title game and the only time since 1929 they haven’t played on the edge of the State Fair of Texas midway. Both were undefeated this season before the Sooners won 34-30 in a classic battle of unbeaten teams.

But Oklahoma doesn't have a regular-season game against K-State, and Texas won't play Oklahoma State, which is on a league-best four-game winning streak. Iowa State, which beat Oklahoma State but lost to Oklahoma, will finish its regular season with games against Texas and Kansas State.

When Kansas beat Oklahoma last Saturday, it ended the possibility of another undefeated regular season for a Big 12 team, like TCU last season when they made the four-team College Football Playoff and went to the national championship game even after an OT loss to K-State in the conference title game.

The Horned Frogs had been 12-0 overall before that, the first undefeated regular season for a Big 12 team since Texas in 2009, when there were only eight conference games. Oklahoma in 2016 is the only other team to go 9-0 in Big 12 play.

Punching its second consecutive spot into the Region VI/Plains District Championship game, the top-seeded Cougars improve to 14-1-3 while ending the Grizzlies season for the second straight year as Butler finishes at 10-6-5.

Next up is a trip to Overland Park for a Sunday 1:00 p.m. title bout with 17th ranked and 3rd seeded Cowley College (11-3-4) played at Johnson County Community College's soccer field. The matchup will be the third meeting of the year between the two after playing to a pair of draws on each's home pitch.

NCAA is investigating Michigan for impermissible in-person scouting.
A Michigan staffer is alleged to have sent people to future
opponents' games for the purpose of video recording signals. The
NCAA's enforcement process is slow moving, but Big Ten bylaws provide
the commissioner leeway to act on competitive integrity issues.


KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The
Kansas City Chiefs face old teammate Tyreek Hill for the first time
when they take on his high-flying Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt,
Germany. The game Sunday is a showdown between two 6-2 teams that are
angling for positioning atop the AFC. The Chiefs are coming off a
humbling loss in Denver in which they turned the ball over five
times. The Dolphins are coming off a win over New England that
underscored their offensive firepower. The Dolphins are No. 1 in the
league in rushing offense, passing offense, total offense and
scoring. Kansas City has the league's No. 2 pass defense and scoring
defense.


PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kenny
Pickett threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Diontae Johnson with 4:02
remaining and the Pittsburgh Steelers slipped past the Tennesee
Titans 20-16. The Steelers (5-3) bounced back from a dismal loss to
Jacksonville by doing what they’ve done fairly regularly this
season: hung around long enough to pull it out in the end. Four of
Pittsburgh’s five wins have come on games they trailed entering the
fourth quarter. Pickett threw for 190 yards and the winning score.
Titans rookie quarterback Will Levis passed for 262 yards but his

the 18th overall pick in the 2022 draft. His face mask was cut off
and he was placed onto a board while players on both teams knelt on
the Acrisure Stadium turf nearby. Burks appeared to be able to wiggle
his toes as he was being loaded onto the cart. The Titans said Burks
had full movement of all his extremities, according to the broadcast
on Amazon TV.

William Byron, who referred to Blaney as his “brother-in-law”

No. 22 Kansas goes for 1st road win vs. Iowa St. since '08

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt typically has a voice in most major trades involving his franchise, and that presumably includes the one that sent record-setting wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins for a package of draft picks early last year.

Hill was due for a big contract extension, and cash-strapped at the time, the Chiefs decided to send him to Miami, which also fulfilled his wishes. And while Hill has flourished alongside quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, helping to give the Dolphins the league's No. 1 offense, the Chiefs used many of those picks to build the league's No. 2-ranked pass and scoring defense.

“I think that was a trade that worked out well for both parties,” said Hunt, whose defending Super Bowl champions face Hill for the first time Sunday when the Chiefs (6-2) play the Dolphins (6-2) at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Germany.

“Tyreek is an incredible player and has done well with the Dolphins,” Hunt said, “but I also think it has benefited the Chiefs. The draft compensation we received — a lot of that capital was used to improve our defense.”

Still, given the way the Chiefs have struggled to find a reliable pass-catcher besides All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce, and the way that Hill is putting up numbers this season, nobody would quibble if Hunt had a bit of buyer's remorse.

It was the Chiefs who gave him a chance in 2016, when many NFL teams would not touch him in the draft after his off-the-field problems in college. And it was with the Chiefs that Hill became one of the league's most dynamic playmakers, going to the Pro Bowl six times, making three All-Pro teams and setting a slew of records while winning a Super Bowl ring.

Hill has been at his best in his second season with the Dolphins, though. He leads the NFL with 1,014 yards receiving, putting him on pace to become the first 2,000-yard receiver, while leading the league with eight touchdown receptions.

To put that in perspective, the entirety of the Chiefs' wide receiver corps has combined for 1,185 yards and six touchdowns.

“It’s just another game,” Hill insisted. “It’s just like if you’re in high school and you move to a different city, it's still ball. At the end of the day, my job is to go out there and do what I’ve been doing all year."

The Chiefs had a few games during Hill's tenure with them when opponents were to keep him under control, and perhaps coach Andy Reid and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo can lean on those experiences to contain him Sunday.

“He's a great play. That's the bottom line,” Reid said. “You might slow him down, but he's going to make plays somewhere. That's what makes him the player he is. He has speed, quickness and he's smart.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was fighting the flu last week in Denver, then gashed his non-throwing hand, and ended up having one of his worst games in a 24-9 loss to their AFC West rival. He was 24 of 38 for 241 yards with no touchdowns and two picks, and the result was a quarterback rating of 59.2, the second-worst of his career.

Miami could have its starting cornerback duo of Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey for the first time this season. Ramsey, who was acquired from the Rams this past offseason, missed the first seven games while working back from a July knee surgery. He made his Dolphins debut last Sunday against New England and intercepted Mac Jones in the second quarter. Howard is dealing with a groin injury that kept him out the last two weeks, but he said Wednesday that he’s “ready to play now.”

Along with the two interceptions that Mahomes threw last week, he also fumbled the ball away. Marquez Valdes-Scantling lost another fumble and Mecole Hardman, who recently returned to the Chiefs after a trade with the Jets, muffed a punt at the Chiefs 5. Reid lamented afterward that he couldn’t remember one of his teams turning the ball over five times in a game.

Dolphins left tackle Terron Armstead is eligible to come off injured reserve, while safety Jevon Holland is out of the concussion protocol and offensive guard Robert Hunt is day to day with a sore hamstring. Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon is dealing with a sore groin and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. a bruised lower back; they signed former linebacker Darius Harris off the Raiders' practice squad in hopes he can help immediately given his knowledge of the Kansas City defense.

The Dolphins flew overnight to Germany on Monday, giving them several days to get accustomed to the time difference and their surroundings. The Chiefs took a different approach, leaving after practice Thursday in an attempt to keep their weekly schedule as close to normal as possible. It’s the same approach that they took in London in 2015.

“The team has the opportunity to experience a different country and culture together. I think that’s a really cool opportunity,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. “I told the team that if you make a play in a game, there’s some kid that speaks German that is wearing your jersey for the rest of his adolescence. You have lifelong fans. That is kind of what happens in those type of environments. Their first exposure is you making this play, and that’s a really, really cool opportunity.”

While Oklahoma State won at home two years ago and made the Big 12 title game, the Sooners have dominated the series overall with a 91-19-7 lead. Oklahoma has won 17 of the last 20 meetings, and is 20-7 in their Big 12 matchups.

They are also the top two scoring defenses: Kansas State has allowed 127 points (15.9 per game), just ahead of Texas at 128 (16.0 ppg). Texas has won six in a row in the series.

West Virginia cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. had two interceptions and a pass breakup last week against UCF and is the Big 12 leader with two passes defended per game. The Minnesota transfer has four interceptions and been credited with 12 pass breakups this season. Only Iowa State's Jeremiah Cooper has more picks with five, but no other Big 12 player has more than eight pass breakups.
