A weekend filled with ups and downs, the Barton Community College women's bowling team settled for a 7th place finish this past weekend at the Bronco Open held at Hasting's, NE Pastime Lanes.

The Cougars finished the two-day event with a pin count 7,202 over six individual and 16 baker rounds. Ottawa University secured the team championship outlasting the nine-fielded teams tipping 8,213 pins to outlast runner-up Morningside University's 8,134.

Chailyn Scott&nbsp;paved the way for nine Cougars reaching a six game total 1,087 or 10th place. Despite not reaching a game of 200, the freshman pieced together the team's highest 10-frame average of 181.2.

Jaden Rabe&nbsp;posted the lone 200 scores for Barton with a second game 228 and sixth game 203 on her way to a 18th overall finish and total 1,041.

The Cougars will wrap-up the fall semester at the SWIBC-III and SWIBC IV held Saturday and Sunday at the City View Lanes in Fort Worth, TX.

Barton women's bowling salvages 7th place finish at Bronco Open

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self signed a lifetime contract Tuesday that will pay him $53 million over the first five years, easily surpassing Kentucky coach John Calipari for the richest deal ever given to a college basketball coach at a public university.

Self will make more than $11 million this season in base pay, professional services and royalties along with a one-time signing bonus and retention payments, including some that were deferred amid the pandemic. At the conclusion of each year, another year is added to the deal, and Self will earn a one-time, $5 million retention bonus if he serves out the first five.

The deal amends a similarly structured contract Self signed in 2021, and includes a provision allowing the renegotiation of terms after the 2025-26 season. Calipari's deal with the Wildcats pays him $8.5 million this season.

“Bill Self is undoubtedly the most consistent coach in college basketball, and a restructuring of his contract terms were long overdue,” Kansas athletic director Travis Goff said. “In an ever-changing collegiate athletics environment, our strong commitment to Coach Self positions KU basketball to maintain and enhance its status as the most storied program in the country."

<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">The top-ranked Jayhawks</a>, led by Michigan transfer Hunter Dickinson, routed North Carolina Central on Monday night to open the season. They play Manhattan on Friday before facing Calipari and his Wildcats in the Champions Classic next week.

“There has never been a better time to be a part of our athletic department,” Self said. “My family and I are so proud to be at this university, and I am looking forward to many more seasons representing the most passionate fan base in the country.”

The contract includes incentives that could drive the value significantly higher. Self would earn $50,000 for a Big 12 regular-season title, another $50,000 if he is Big 12 coach of the year and $25,000 for winning the conference tournament. He also would earn $50,000 for an NCAA Tournament appearance, $100,000 for making the Sweet 16, $150,000 for reaching the Final Four and $200,000 for winning another national championship.

The amended deal comes a month after Self and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-jayhawks-ncaa-infractions-99082309c82877e62ee16e0f5e33b348">the Jayhawks avoided serious penalties</a>&nbsp;resulting from a 2017 investigation by the FBI into college basketball corruption. An independent appeals panel stripped them of their 2018 Final Four appearance but downgraded five Level I violations — considered the most severe — to three Level II and the rest Level III violations.

Like his previous agreement, which said Self could not be fired for cause “due to any current infractions matter that involves conduct on or prior to” its signing, the amended contract states that Self cannot be terminated for cause “due to an infractions matter that arises from the same set of operative facts" that were considered by the panel.

Self arrived at Kansas from Illinois in 2003 to replace Roy Williams, who had left for North Carolina, and has since won 566 games to lead all active Power 5 coaches. He has 773 wins over his coaching career, including two national championships and 20 conference titles, and twice he has been voted AP national coach of the year.

Last season, Self was hospitalized on the eve of the Big 12 Tournament and wound up needing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-bill-self-hospital-ncaa-coach-jayhawks-2053ffeb102c7dfb418109215dab554b">a valve replaced in his heart</a>. He missed not only the conference tournament but the NCAA Tournament, where the Jayhawks lost in the second round.

His team could go a whole lot deeper this season.

The Jayhawks returned a trio of starters from last year's team — Dajuan Harris Jr., KJ Adams and Kevin McCullar Jr. — while signing a touted freshman class led by Elmarko Jackson and bringing in a trio of high-profile transfers.

The biggest of them, both literally and figuratively, is the 7-foot-2 Dickinson, perhaps the most sought-after player ever to enter the portal. He had 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks in only 24 minutes on Monday night.

out their once-explosive offense during a 7-2 start as they try to
repeat as Super Bowl champions. They head into their week off atop
the AFC standings despite the struggles of Patrick Mahomes &amp; Co.
to put points consistently on the board. Their defense has not
allowed more than 24 points in a game this season, and their only two
losses came when their own offense failed to score more than 20. In
fact, the Chiefs have failed to produce points four times, or nearly
half their season so far, which is a big departure from the formula
that has won them two Super Bowls in four years.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —
The Los Angeles Rams are signing quarterback Carson Wentz, a person
with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press. The source
spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday because Wentz
needed to pass a physical before the deal could be announced. Wentz
has been out of the NFL this season after starting seven games last
season for the Washington Commanders. The seven-year NFL veteran was
Philadelphia’s starter for five years, and he started all 17 games
for Indianapolis in 2021. The Rams are in need of another passer
behind Matthew Stafford, who missed Los Angeles' most recent game
with a thumb injury.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.
(AP) — Ja’Kobe Walker scored 15 of his 28 points in the second
half to help No. 20 Baylor rally to an 88-82 win over Auburn on
Tuesday night at the Sanford Pentagon. Baylor used a 22-10 run over
the final 8 minutes of the game to overcome an eight-point deficit.
Trailing 72-66 with, the Bears started their spurt on Langston Love’s
3-pointer. With just under three minutes to play, Baylor’s Yves
Missi stole an Auburn inbounds pass and drove the length of the floor
for a dunk that gave the Bears a 79-77 lead, their first since 24-23
midway through the first. Denver Jones hit a 3-pointer with 19
seconds left to cut Auburn’s deficit to three, but Baylor went
3-for-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the win.

programs in Washington State and Oregon State that are about to be
left behind when schools scatter from the conference after the
season. For 10 Pac-12 programs, it’s off to the promise of greener
pastures in mega-conferences. The question that remains is how big is
too big for a league. The Big 12 expands to 16 with the incoming
Pac-12 arrivals, while the Big Ten balloons to 18 and the ACC to 17.
Some programs may end up getting lost in the reshuffle.

punishes the football program before a full investigation of
allegations of an impermissible scouting and sign-stealing scheme

disciplinary action from the conference. The Big Ten gave the school

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and West Virginia coach Neal Brown have slipped off the hot seat and are arguably more likely to be considered Big 12 Coach of the Year contenders.

Gundy was under scrutiny after the Cowboys lost back-to-back games to South Alabama and Iowa State in September. Now, he’s back to being the man in his 19th year leading the program. Oklahoma State (7-2, 5-1 Big 12) has won five straight, including a 27-24 victory over rival Oklahoma that left the Cowboys tied with Texas atop the Big 12.

Gundy said his staff was part of the problem early this season.

“Coaching was awful so we didn’t play very well,” Gundy said. “I told our coaches their coaching was awful, and my coaching was awful because I watched it happen. We didn’t play well.”

The Cowboys have rallied behind Ollie Gordon II, who has gone from barely getting carries the first three games to becoming the nation’s leading rusher. He has 1,225 yards and 12 touchdowns this season and has gained at least 100 yards on the ground six straight games. He has fueled Oklahoma State's rise to No. 15 in the Top 25 heading into Saturday’s game at UCF.

The Cowboys are 5-1 since Gundy settled on Alan Bowman as the full-time starting quarterback. The Michigan transfer has passed for 1,914 yards and eight touchdowns.

Gundy said the real key for the offense has been blocking.

“The reason we’re playing good is because our offensive line is playing good,” he said. “Early in the year, for whatever reason, we weren’t and we couldn’t manage anything. They’ve picked it up the last how many other games in a row playing physical, covering guys up, which allows us to throw passes, allowing us to become better pass protectors and a little more balanced and gives us a chance.”

Brown entered this season with a 22-25 record in four years and serious skepticism about his future. Last November, the school announced the day that Wren Baker was hired as West Virginia’s new athletic director that Brown would be retained, despite a 5-7 finish in 2022.

The media picked West Virginia to finish last in the 14-team league this season, something the team took as a slight. Now, the Mountaineers (6-3, 4-2) already are bowl eligible and the conference title game is a possibility. They are one game out of the league lead as they prepare to visit No. 17 Oklahoma.

“I think this team plays with a chip on its shoulder," Brown said. "They’re as resilient as any group I’ve been a part of. So I think the story on this season is far from written. I think it will continue to progress as we roll.”

West Virginia’s offense sputtered over the first month of the season but has found a groove behind a veteran line, dual-threat quarterback Garrett Greene and the backfield tandem of 240-pound CJ Donaldson and speedy freshman Jahiem White. The Mountaineers’ scoring average of nearly 38 points over the last four games is its best under Brown in Big 12 play, while the 336 rushing yards against BYU were their highest in seven years.

After an opening loss at Penn State, the Mountaineers reeled off four straight wins. They then lost two in a row due in part to injuries and defensive meltdowns, including a Hail Mary touchdown as time ran out at Houston. They have now won two consecutive games, scoring 24 points off five turnovers.

(AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and West Virginia coach Neal Brown have slipped off the hot seat and are arguably more likely to be considered Big 12 Coach of the Year contenders.Gundy was under scrutiny after the Cowboys lost back-to-back games to South Alabama and Iowa State in September. Now, he’s back to being the man in his 19th year leading the program. Oklahoma State (7-2, 5-1 Big 12) has won five straight, including a 27-24 victory over rival Oklahoma that left the Cowboys tied with Texas atop the Big 12.Gundy said his staff was part of the problem early this season.“Coaching was awful so we didn’t play very well,” Gundy said. “I told our coaches their coaching was awful, and my coaching was awful because I watched it happen. We didn’t play well.”The Cowboys have rallied behind Ollie Gordon II, who has gone from barely getting carries the first three games to becoming the nation’s leading rusher. He has 1,225 yards and 12 touchdowns this season and has gained at least 100 yards on the ground six straight games. He has fueled Oklahoma State's rise to No. 15 in the Top 25 heading into Saturday’s game at UCF.The Cowboys are 5-1 since Gundy settled on Alan Bowman as the full-time starting quarterback. The 5th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team received an at-large berth today from the national office for the 2023 NJCAA Division I Championship Tournament held November 12-18 at Wichita's Stryker Sports Complex.

Looking to rebound from a last second defeat in Sunday's Region VI/Plains District Championship, the now 17-2-3 Cougars will play the 3:00 p.m. Pool C contests on Monday and Tuesday.

Barton opens play on the Stadium Field against 10th seeded Indian Hills Community College (9-2-4) followed by moving to Field 3 on Tuesday in taking on the pool's top seeded, 3rd overall Salt Lake Community College (16-1-2).

Both contests will be a rematch of sorts, Barton defeating Indian Hills 3-1 way back on September 1 at the Cougar Soccer Complex and meeting Salt Lake again on the big stage as the Bruins handed the Cougars a 3-1 defeat at the 2020 National Tournament to finish pool play 1-1 having defeated Coastal Bend College 2-1 a day prior.

5th ranked Cougars receive at-large berth

For the second straight year, the Barton Community College women's soccer team is headed to the NJCAA Division I Championship Tournament as the Cougars received an at-large berth announced today by the national office.

The National Tournament will be held November 12-18 at Wichita's Stryker Sports Complex.

Ranked 8th in final poll, the now 9th seeded Cougars will be joined in Pool D of the tournament by 4th seeded Eastern Florida State College and 5th seeded Tyler Junior College.

Barton, who made program history last season with its first ever trip to the Championships, will play the 5:30 p.m. contest on Field 3 in each of their two pool play match-ups.

The Cougars, now 14-2-3, will first meet the pool's top seeded Eastern Florida (11-3-1) on Sunday followed by Monday's rematch with Tyler (16-1-2). The Apaches, who were the nations' top ranked team last year, handed Barton its lone pool play defeat in the 2022 tournament by a 2-0 score after the Cougars opened with a 3-0 victory the day prior over Motlow State Community College.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boogie Ellis had 24 points and eight rebounds as No. 21 Southern California defeated Kansas State 82-69 in the season opener for both teams Monday night.

The Trojans led by 19 with 6:33 left, but that margin was trimmed to eight with 1:41 remaining before USC held on.

“We've got a lot of vets and people that are experienced and been through it,” Ellis said. “So we just stayed calm and came together.”

Touted freshman Isaiah Collier made his USC debut with 18 points, including 15 in the first half. He added six assists and received a standing ovation when he went to the bench after fouling out with 4:50 to play.

“I thought Isaiah played a great first half, first game on the big stage here in Las Vegas. I thought it was important for us to get out to a fast start,” USC coach Andy Enfield said. “I thought Boogie and Isaiah really controlled the tempo in the first half. Isaiah got downhill and was able to get to the rim, made some great passes. ... I was proud of the six assists and 7 of 9 from the field. Very efficient tonight.”

Kobe Johnson finished with 16 points for the Trojans, and Joshua Morgan had 11. USC shot 31 of 60 from the floor (51.7%).

Tyler Perry led Kansas State with 22 points. Cam Carter scored 15, and David N’Guessan had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“This is exactly why we came here,” Wildcats coach Jerome Tang said. “This is a really good USC team. High-level players. The great thing is that we don’t have to wait for a month or two weeks or before the Big 12 to find out the things that we need to work on. It was very much exposed. ... We did a couple of good things and a whole bunch of not-so-good things.”

A strong defensive team last season, the Trojans limited the Wildcats to 31% shooting (22 of 71).

USC held its opponents under 40% in 19 of 33 games last season and finished eighth in the country in field goal percentage defense at 39.3%.

Kansas State, which reached the Elite Eight in March, dropped to 4-2 all-time against the Trojans.

Bronny James wore grey team sweats and cheered his USC teammates from the bench. The son of NBA career scoring leader LeBron James is still on his way back from suffering a cardiac arrest during a summer workout. LeBron James said last month that his son had surgery to repair a congenital heart condition that caused the collapse.

Kansas State: The Wildcats opened their season away from home for the first time since losing 73-64 to BYU in 2002. Kansas State dropped to 12-17 when starting outside Manhattan, Kansas.

USC: Collier’s performance came on the heels of an impressive one by fellow freshman JuJu Watkins, who led USC’s 21st-ranked women’s team to an 83-74 win over No. 7 Ohio State. Collier and Watkins were considered by many the consensus No. 1 recruits for 2023.

USC hosts Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had seven points, two rebounds and a block in the first 90 seconds of his Kansas career Monday night, then made a trio of 3-pointers that showed the 7-foot-2 transfer from Michigan is more than just a beast on the block.

Not surprisingly, his newfound fans inside Allen Fieldhouse responded with waves of adulation.

“I was telling somebody, ‘I’m used to the opposing fans being this loud and more boos than cheers,'" Dickinson said after leading the top-ranked Jayhawks to a 99-56 wipeout of North Carolina Central on college basketball's opening night.

“It was real fun to have people on my side for once,” added Dickinson, whose decision to leave the Wolverines left angry fans in his wake. “The atmosphere was insane. I've been hearing about it during my recruiting, and when I committed, and I was hearing so much about Allen Fieldhouse. And it lived up to it.”

Dickinson lived up to the hype, too, finishing with 21 points, eight boards and five assists.

Nic Timberlake had 13 points, KJ Adams scored 12 and Dajuan Harris Jr. dished out 10 assists for the Jayhawks, who led 59-17 by halftime before coasting over the final 20 minutes to their 51st consecutive home-opening win.

Ja'Darius Harris had 12 points to lead the Eagles.

“We have 10 new guys who really, none of them have really played Division I basketball," longtime NC Central coach LeVelle Moton said. “You play this type of game, you get their attention early.”

Any doubt about the outcome was gone midway through the first half, when the Jayhawks went on a 20-2 run to take a 40-11 lead. McCullar scored eight during the spurt, and transfer forward Parker Braun added a highlight ally-oop dunk.

"The first 25 minutes, that ball moved" Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. "Seemed to me we got everything we wanted, even when we didn’t score."

Dickinson had 17 points, seven boards and four assists by halftime; the Eagles had 18 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

“You have to pray, You have to go to church and get a strong service in,” Moton said of matching up with Dickinson. “He's going to be a problem, and he's not just going to be a problem for North Carolina Central. He's going to be a problem for everyone.”

As impressive as the Jayhawks were offensively, piling up 34 assists on 39 field goals while shooting nearly 70% from the field, they were just as good on defense. NC Central was just 6 of 23 from 3 and shot 23% from the field.

“Coach has been on us pretty much every practice, just getting the defense right,” Timberlake said. “We came out storming.”

Kansas guard Johnny Furphy played with no limitations after dealing with shin splints during the preseason. Fellow freshman Jamari McDowell was not suited up after a minor injury in practice but should be back this week.

NC Central will find life much easier in the MEAC, where the Eagles were picked to finish third this season.

Kansas had struggled in exhibitions against Illinois and Fort Hays State from beyond the 3-point line but went 13 of 23 against the Eagles. That included a 9-of-12 mark in the first half.

Hunter Dickinson scores 21 as No. 1 Kansas routs North Carolina Central 99-56

WICHITA, Kan. – Four Shockers finished in double figures and Wichita State led nearly wire-to-wire in a 76-59 win over Lipscomb Monday night to open the 2023-24 season.

Head coach Paul Mills saw his offense blitz the Bisons in his Wichita State coaching debut. Wichita State (1-0) has won 27 of its last 28 home openers and improved to 29-2 in season openers since 1992.

Colby Rogers scored 18 of his 20 points before halftime in his Shocker debut. He was 8-for-17 from the field and grabbed six boards in 32 minutes. Isaac Abidde came off the bench and dropped a career-high 13 points, five rebounds and was nearly perfect from the floor (6-for-7).

Quincy Ballard made his first career start and registered his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Kenny Pohto came up one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Xavier Bell added 12 points and a career-high five assists.

Harlond Beverly, Dalen Ridgnal, Jacob Germany made their Wichita State debuts, while Joy Ighovodja, Trevor McBride and Henry Thengvall all saw their first collegiate action.

Wichita State dominated the undersized Bisons, outrebounding Lipscomb by 18 and won the battle in the paint by 16. The Shockers made 47.7 percent of their attempts overall despite shooting 3-for-13 from beyond the arc.

A low turnover game saw the two teams combine for 19 turnovers (9 – Lipscomb, 10 – Wichita State).

Right off the opening tip, just 11 seconds into the game, Wichita State executed a perfect alley-oop between Beverly and Ballard to get the Shockers off and running.

Lipscomb grabbed its only lead, 11-9, at the 13:24 mark, but Wichita State quickly seized control, going on a 13-4 run to force a Lipscomb timeout. Out of the timeout Wichita State scored six straight to take a 28-15 lead.

With 5:15 remaining in the half, Rogers caught fire. The redshirt junior scored seven straight points behind a layup, turnaround jumper and transition pull-up three-pointer. His torrid first half saw him finish with 18 points in the half and helped the Shockers build a 44-31 halftime lead.

Lipscomb threatened a comeback bid just over 7:00 minutes into the second half when the Bisons trimmed the lead to nine. On the next trip down, Abidde drained a corner triple to push the margin back to 12 and effectively put the game away.

Abidde's career night included two highlight dunks that brought the Charles Koch Arena fans to their feet.

51 straight home openers. Kansas used a 20-2 run midway through the

shots to seal it. His layup with nine minutes to go gave Abilene
Christian a 53-40 advantage before the Cowboys rallied. Bryce
Thompson scored 19 points and Mike Marsh 13 for Oklahoma State. The
Wildcats’ lone win in the overall series prior to Monday happened
in 1966, a 67-52 victory.

CINCINNATI (AP) —
Day Day Thomas scored 14 points, two reserves reached double figures,
and Cincinnati defeated UIC 69-58 in a season opener. Thomas, a
veteran point guard, added three steals, three assists and three
rebounds. Dan Skillings Jr. had 13 points and eight rebounds and
fellow reserve CJ Fredrick, a transfer from Kentucky, added 11
points. Big 12-newcomer Cincinnati held the Flames to two points over
one 4-minute stretch of the first half and led 40-30 at the break.
UIC was within 41-36 early in the second half but was held to two
points in a 6-minute stretch, leaving Cincinnati ahead 52-38 at the
under-12 timeout. Cincinnati’s largest lead was 63-47.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.
(AP) — Quinn Slazinski scored 18 points, Jesse Edwards had 13
points and 13 rebounds, and West Virginia beat Missouri State 67-59.
It took a while, but the Mountaineers were able to put a tumultuous
offseason behind after the resignation of coach Bob Huggins following

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) —
Javian McCollum knocked down three 3-pointers and scored a team-high
19 points in his Oklahoma debut and returning starter Otega Oweh

Injured Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has resumed throwing again and
been upgraded as “day to day,” coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday.
The coach didn't say when Ewers might return. The No. 7 Longhorns
play at TCU this week. Second-year freshman Maalik Murphy has started
the last two games. Texas won both but Murphy struggled after a good
start in an overtime win over Kansas State. He threw two

Chicago Cubs have hired manager Craig Counsell away from Milwaukee,
landing the former big leaguer with a record-breaking contract and
firing David Ross in a tandem of surprising moves. The 53-year-old
Counsell became the majors’ highest paid manager with a five-year
contract worth more than $40 million. That's according to a person
with knowledge of the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on
condition of anonymity because the terms weren’t announced. Ross
went 262-284 in four seasons with Chicago, winning the NL Central in
2020 in his first year in charge. Counsell led the budget-conscious
Brewers to five playoff appearances in the last six years.

NEW YORK (AP) —
The New York Mets are hiring Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza as
their manager, according to a person familiar with the decision. The
person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity
because the move had not been announced. Mendoza spent the past four
seasons across town as Aaron Boone’s bench coach with the New York
Yankees. He replaces Buck Showalter, who was fired by the Mets at the
end of last season. It's the first high-profile hire by new Mets
president of baseball operations David Stearns, who took over his
hometown team early last month.

Two-way star Shohei Ohtani was among seven players given $20,325,000
qualifying offers by their former teams as the free agent market
opened for 168 players. All seven players are likely to turn down the
offers by the Nov. 14 deadline to accept in favor of multiyear
contracts on the open market. In addition to the Los Angeles Angels’
offer to Ohtani, the others to receive qualifying offers were
outfielder Cody Bellinger, pitchers Josh Hader and Blake Snell, Aaron
Nola, Sonny Gray and third baseman Matt Chapman. By making a
qualifying offer, a team could receive draft-pick compensation when
high school and college players are selected next July

ANN ARBOR, Mich.
(AP) — A former college football staffer shared documents with
Michigan that showed a Big Ten opponent had spreadsheets of the
Wolverines’ signs last year obtained before his team played
Michigan. The material relied on intelligence gathered from multiple
conference schools that had already played the Wolverines, according
to the former staffer. He says he has since given Michigan the
material along with screenshots of text-message exchanges with
staffers at other Big Ten schools. The alleged actions are
potentially in violation of the Big Ten’s sportsmanship policy.
Michigan is under NCAA investigation for impermissible scouting.

Tuesday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — College football tailgates are as synonymous with the game as blocking and tackling. Burgers, brats and beer go along with the cornhole and camaraderie for tens of thousands of people every Saturday, a beloved tradition seen outside stadiums big and small.

“My dad almost gets more excited for football season than I do because of the tailgating and stuff like that,” said J.J. McCarthy, the star quarterback for No. 2 Michigan.

For many years, the booze flowed only outside of stadiums. Not anymore: Selling beer and wine inside college football stadiums has become the norm over the past decade, a way for schools to bring in more revenue and attract fans who might otherwise be inclined to stay home.

According to a survey by The Associated Press of Power Five conference schools and Notre Dame, 55 of 69 of them — 80% — now sell alcohol in the public areas of their stadiums on game days. Of the remaining schools, some sell alcoholic drinks in non-public areas of the venue such as suites; others do not sell booze at all.

The University of Wisconsin is one of the institutions that do not sell alcohol to the general public at football games, but it will begin selling booze at basketball and hockey games this season.

“If our fan experience metrics increase, then it certainly warrants a conversation," said Mitchell Pinta, Wisconsin’s deputy athletic director. “`Hey, we did this at Kohl Center (and) LaBahn Arena. What would it take? What will it look like? Is that something we want to do at Camp Randall?'”

Alcohol has been sold in football stadiums in various ways for years, but the number of schools willing to do it picked up dramatically in the late 2010s. Adam Barry, a health behavior social scientist at Texas A&amp;M, said after the Southeastern Conference allowed schools to sell alcohol in 2019, booze started to flow in stadiums from coast to coast.

“Since the SEC made that decision, other Power Five conferences followed suit, and we’ve seen an exponential rise,” Barry said.

The AP survey found that 19 schools that currently are in Power Five conferences began selling alcohol to the public during football games in 2019. Before that, just 20 such schools permitted the practice.

Since 2019, another 16 schools have come on board, including Michigan State, Kentucky and Stanford, all of which started selling booze in their football stadiums during the current season.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation in July lifting the state’s ban on alcohol being sold at college sporting events. Michigan State made moves relatively quickly in response.

“I didn’t have much trepidation because we’re not the first," said Marlon Lynch, Michigan State's chief safety officer. "It’s been done for years.”

The University of Michigan, meanwhile, did not make alcohol available at the Big House this fall, waiting to see how it goes at basketball and hockey games later this winter. The school has also conducted community surveys.

“We have to take slow steps in order to implement this because it hasn’t been a part of our culture," athletic director Warde Manuel said. "This is a way to phase that in, see what the data says and then talk to the regents and the president again.”

University of Michigan Regent Paul Brown said he was not sure about the idea.

“One of the things that makes us unique is a collegiate atmosphere," Brown said last month as the board approved applying for liquor licenses at the school's football, basketball and hockey venues. "It is different than the pro sports that always serve alcohol. I think that difference is one thing that creates value for our institution. And so, I don’t want to destroy that value.”

The University of North Carolina, meanwhile, is in its fifth season of selling Twisted Tea, Modelo, White Claw and other booze.

“Based upon the people that I attend games with sometimes, I think that they will still prefer tailgating over the in-game,” said Jonathan Williams, gripping a Coors Light after buying it at a cart station during a recent Tar Heels game. “They’re going to want to buy and pay grocery-store prices versus stadium prices and try to get as much in as they can before coming in.”

At North Carolina, alcohol has helped the bottom line with about $4 million in sales. After having $320,213 in net sales during the 2019-20 athletic year, the school quadrupled that number last year and will see an increase again after this season.

“Athletic departments typically are not profitable,” Barry said. “So, selling alcohol has simply become a new revenue stream.”

Before Pittsburgh upset Louisville at home last month, Jen Margot and her family played cornhole, noshed on barbecue and drank an array of mostly domestic beers on the fourth level of a parking garage adjacent to Acrisure Stadium.

“We always joked the prices at the tailgate were better,” Margot said with a laugh.

Margot said the adults will buy a beer or two when they’re inside but prefer the atmosphere at the tailgate.

Burgers, brats and beer go along with the cornhole and camaraderie for tens of thousands of people every Saturday, a beloved tradition seen outside stadiums big and small.“My dad almost gets more excited for football season than I do because of the tailgating and stuff like that,” said J.J. McCarthy, the star quarterback for No. 2 Michigan.For many years, the booze flowed only outside of stadiums. Not anymore: Selling beer and wine inside college football stadiums has become the norm over the past decade, a way for schools to bring in more revenue and attract fans who might otherwise be inclined to stay home.According to a survey by The Associated Press of Power Five conference schools and Notre Dame, 55 of 69 of them — 80% — now sell alcohol in the public areas of their stadiums on game days. Of the remaining schools, some sell alcoholic drinks in non-public areas of the venue such as suites; others do not sell booze at all.The University of Wisconsin is one of the institutions that do not sell alcohol to the general public at football games, but it will begin selling booze at basketball and hockey games this season.“If our fan experience metrics increase, then it certainly warrants a conversation," said Mitchell Pinta, Wisconsin’s deputy athletic director. “`Hey, we did this at Kohl Center (and) LaBahn Arena. What would it take? What will it look like? Is that something we want to do at Camp Randall?'”Alcohol has been sold in football stadiums in various ways for years, but the number of schools willing to do it picked up dramatically in the late 2010s. Adam Barry, a health behavior social scientist at Texas A&amp;M, said after the Southeastern Conference allowed schools to sell alcohol in 2019, booze started to flow in stadiums from coast to coast.“Since the SEC made that decision, other Power Five conferences followed suit, and we’ve seen an exponential rise,” Barry said.The AP survey found that 19 schools that currently are in Power Five conferences began selling alcohol to the public during football games in 2019. Before that, just 20 such schools permitted the practice.Since 2019, another 16 schools have come on board, including Michigan State, Kentucky and Stanford, all of which started selling booze in their football stadiums during the current season.Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation in July lifting the state’s ban on alcohol being sold at college sporting events. Michigan State made moves relatively quickly in response.“I didn’t have much trepidation because we’re not the first," said Marlon Lynch, Michigan State's chief safety officer. "It’s been done for years.”The University of Michigan, meanwhile, did not make alcohol available at the Big House this fall, waiting to see how it goes at basketball and hockey games later this winter. The school has also conducted community surveys.“We have to take slow steps in order to implement this because it hasn’t been a part of our culture," athletic director Warde Manuel said. "This is a way to phase that in, see what the data says and then talk to the regents and the president again.”University of Michigan Regent Paul Brown said he was not sure about the idea.“One of the things that makes us unique is a collegiate atmosphere," Brown said last month as the board approved applying for liquor licenses at the school's football, basketball and hockey venues. "It is different than the pro sports that always serve alcohol. I think that difference is one thing that creates value for our institution. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs underscored in Sunday's victory over the Miami Dolphins three facts that became readily apparent through the first nine weeks of the season: They have one of the league's best defenses, their once high-powered offense has fizzled and yet they remain one of the league's best teams.

The Chiefs (7-2) followed a humbling loss in Denver, where Patrick Mahomes had one of his worst games and they failed to reach the end zone at all, with a 21-14 win over a fellow Super Bowl contender in Frankfurt, Germany.

But the victory over the Dolphins was owed largely to the work of the Kansas City defense, which produced a TD of its own that proved to be the margin of victory, and a fourth-down stop in the final minutes that kept the game from going to overtime.

“It’s got to be the top defense in the NFL,” said Mahomes, who was held to just 185 yards passing and two touchdowns by the Dolphins. “That's a great offense (in Miami). To hold them to 14 points where I fumbled in our own area for seven of those points — that's a tremendous job. I think they're going to continue to get better because they're young and they love it.”

Truth is, the defense can't get a whole lot better. The Chiefs have not allowed anyone to score more than 24 points in a game this season, and their only two losses came when their own offense failed to score more than 20.

In fact, the Chiefs have failed to score more than 20 points on four occasions, a significant departure from their high-flying ways that have produced two Super Bowl titles in the past four seasons. They've been done in by penalties, turnovers and, more than anything else, the inability of their wide receivers to get open down the field.

“I think if the offense gets to where it needs to be,” Mahomes said, "we'll be a tough team to beat.”

The Chiefs have the benefit of a late bye to work out some of the problems. Then they return to face the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch on Monday night, which should further energize Mahomes &amp; Co. to turn things around.

“We have to take care of the penalties. That’s the obvious. We’ll get that worked out as we go here,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after the win over Miami. “Listen, we came out of this with things we can work on to get better, and we’ll do that.”

The Chiefs have quietly turned into one of the best in the NFL at pressuring the quarterback. Tua Tagovailoa had been sacked only 11 times all season before Kansas City dropped him three times Sunday. Each came from a different level of the defense, too, underscoring the versatility their pass rush has shown all season.

The second-year standout had a game-high 10 tackles and forced a fumble that Bryan Cook returned for a touchdown against Miami. He also was a big reason the Chiefs were able to shut down Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Hill had eight catches for just 62 yards and Waddle finished with three for 42 yards.STOCK DOWNDT Chris Jones had a quarterback hit and assisted on a single tackle and that was the extent of his production Sunday — aside from a personal foul penalty when the Chiefs had held the Dolphins to a field goal late in the game. With a fresh set of downs, Miami scored on the very next play. Jones came out of a holdout that lasted into the regular season to have at least one sack in each of his first five games. He has five tackles and no sacks total the past three.INJURIESCB L’Jarius Sneed was evaluated for a concussion in the second quarter but was allowed to return to the game.KEY NUMBER14 — The total yardage that TE Travis Kelce had on a meager three catches against Miami.
