Nathan Eovaldi pitched six gutsy innings, Mitch Garver broke a
scoreless tie with an RBI single in the seventh and the Texas Rangers
won their first World Series championship by beating the Arizona
Diamondbacks 5-0 in Game 5. Marcus Semien homered late and the
Rangers, held hitless for six innings by Zac Gallen, finished a
record 11-0 on the road this postseason after capping an all-wild
card World Series with three straight wins in the desert. In his
first season with Texas, manager Bruce Bochy won his fourth title 13
years to the day after his first, which came in 2010 when the Giants
beat the Rangers. He also won with San Francisco in 2012 and 2014.
Texas shortstop Corey Seager took home his second World Series MVP
award.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.
(AP) — The turbulent and brilliant basketball coach Bob Knight has
died. Knight's family made the announcement Wednesday night on social
media, saying he was surrounded by family at his home in Bloomington.
Knight led the Hoosiers to three NCAA championships. He was among
college basketball’s winningest coaches, with 902 victories in 42
seasons at Army, Indiana and Texas Tech. He coached the U.S. to the
1984 Olympic gold medal. His temper was legendary: In 1985, he tossed
a chair across the court. But he took pride in his players’ high
graduation rates and never was accused of a major NCAA violation. Bob
Knight was 83.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.
(AP) — Indiana Hoosiers basketball fans always waited for Bob
Knight to erupt. On a winter night in 1985 it didn't take long. Five
minutes into a game against rival Purdue, Knight drew a technical
foul then nonchalantly turned around, picked up a chair and hurled it
past Boilermakers guard Steve Reid. It became the defining moment in
the storied career of the always combustible Knight, who died at 83,
his family announced Wednesday. The sports world was outraged by
Knight’s conduct, but not his players. They had seen it all before.

UNDATED (AP) — The
Big 12 released four years of football opponents for its newly
expanded 16-team conference, including a yearly BYU-Utah game. The
Big 12 adds Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah from the Pac-12
in 2024 while saying goodbye to Oklahoma and Texas. The Sooners and
Longhorns are joining the Southeastern Conference. Big 12 teams will
play nine conference games per season and every member will play at
least one home-and-home with the other 15 schools over the next four
years. Dates of games will be released later. BYU and Utah will be
conference-mates for the first time since 2010.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) —
Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will meet one last time as conference
rivals in their “Bedlam” series. Oklahoma will leave the Big 12
for the Southeastern Conference after this season, ending the annual
matchups in a series that began in 1904 -– three years before
Oklahoma became the 46th U.S. state. Oklahoma leads the series
91-19-7. But Oklahoma State has been competitive enough for stretches
in the past 50 years for some to call it a rivalry. The Associated

UNDATED (AP) — TCU
will be trying to beat Texas Tech for the fifth time in a row. A
rivalry win Thursday night in Lubbock would be a boost for either
team in a season gone awry for both. TCU is 4-4 after losing three of
its last four games, the last a 41-3 defeat at Kansas State in a
rematch of last year's Big 12 title game. The 3-5 Red Raiders have
lost their last two games, against K-State and BYU. The game features
two of the Big 12's top running backs in Texas Tech's Tahj Brooks and
TCU's Emani Bailey.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.
(AP) — The number of incoming freshmen in Division I men's
basketball has dropped amid the free-agency rush through the transfer
portal. Data from the NCAA shows that the number of freshmen fell by
18% from the 2019-20 season before the pandemic to the 2021-22
season. That was the first season after a rule change allowing
undergraduate athletes to transfer once without sitting out. The
decline was more acute at 24% for the Power Five leagues.
Pittsburgh's Jeff Capel says the portal gives “more options” for
coaches. Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said transfers typically offer
advantages such as experience and toughness.

Thursday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Returning to the pool after a near three-week layoff, the Barton Community College swimming teams displayed their best results of the season this past weekend at the Kansas Collegiate Showcase.

Competing against in-state four-year programs of Sterling College and the University of St. Mary's University, the Cougars constructed runner-up finishes on both sides with the men accumulating 361 points and the women producing 379.

In the midst of a three weekend stretch, Barton will hit the midway point this weekend for the Drury Invitational held Friday and Saturday in Springfield, MO before concluding the first semester at the Eagle Invitational November 10th-12th.

The Barton men were dominate over the weekend claiming 16 of the 24 events while rewriting 12 new top-10 program times, 19 new personal bests and 16 new season best marks.

Four different Cougars claimed multi-events led by Louis Ainley and Dominik Strba's four golds apiece while Konrad Kozlowski added two and Ethan Baylin adding one.

Ainley's four top times were attained in the 50-breaststroke (26.03) leading a clean 1, 2, 3 Barton sweep, 100-breaststroke (56.51), 50-butterfly (23.20), 100-backstroke (54.08). Strba's pack of four were won over the 200-butterfly (1:56.25), 200-IM (2:05.85), 200-breaststroke (2:10.62) that lead Barton's other 1, 2, 3 podium achievement and 400-IM (4:10.99).

Long distance specialist Kozlowski landed his three victories in the 1650-freestyle (17:30.32), 1000-freestyle (10:11.46) and 500-freestyle (4:50.69).

Rounding out the individual top finishes was Baylin's 50-freestyle (21.29).

Barton claimed three of the four team events 200-medley (1:34.36), 800-freestyle (7:17.78), 400-medley (3:34.76), 400-freestyle (3:16.21).

Over the course of the weekend the Lady Cougars constructed a new program record, 13-new top-10 best times, 21 new personal bests and 18 season best stoppages. Hazel Bentley and Silvana Jacquez Viveros highlighted the weekend racking up six of the 11 victories over the two-day event.

Bentley won her three in the 1650-freestyle (18:50.39), 200-butterfly (2:16.68), and 400-IM (4:51.61) while Viveros collected her trio in the 50-backstroke (30.31), 100-backstroke (1:05.39), and 200-backstroke (2:21.15).

Other first place finishers were Elena Lara's pair of golds in the 500-freestyle (5:34.19) and 100-butterfly (1:03.20), Claire Holt leading a three-clain of Cougars to a 1, 2, 3 sweep in the 50-butterfly (28.39), and Rachel Sims claiming the lone diving event with a 1-meter mark (233.80).

Barton's lone program record breaker came in the 400-meadley relay with the four-pack of Jacquez, Holt, Lara and Caroline Tipton clocking a (3:54.35) for a runner-up finish.

The lone team victory came in the 800-freestyle relay with Lara, Maria Orlandi Genizelli, Tipton and Bentley edging the field of three (8:39.65).

The game will kick at 11 a.m. and be televised nationally on FOX with Gus Johnson (play-by-play), Joel Klatt (analyst) and Jenny Taft (sidelines) calling the action.

2) The Cats are one of six Power 5 teams to rank in the top 15 nationally in both scoring offense and scoring defense. They enter play this week ranked 13th by scoring 37.4 points per game. Since Collin Klein took over as offensive coordinator for the 2021 Texas Bowl, K-State is averaging 34.5 points per game, which includes five games this season of 40 or more points.

3) K-State's ground game has led the way as it checks in at No. 5 in the country with 226.0 rushing yards per game. Senior Will Howard and freshman Avery Johnson have both directed a K-State offense over the last three weeks that has averaged 40 points and 472 yards per game. Howard has thrown for five touchdowns with no interceptions, while Johnson has five rushing touchdowns and two passing scores.

4) Last week against Houston, the Kansas State defense blanked the Cougars, 41-0, as the Wildcats have not given up a touchdown since the 7:31 mark of the third quarter in the Texas Tech game, yielding only three points during that stretch (142:31). Over the last two seasons, K-State has held 14 of its 15 Big 12 opponents under its season scoring averaging entering the game.

5) The K-State defense enters the week ranked in the top 25 nationally in third down defense (6th – 28.9%), scoring defense (14th – 15.9 ppg), pass efficiency defense (16th – 114.14) and rushing defense (23rd – 109.4 yds/gm). Since the Cats switched to a 3-3-5 alignment to start the 2021 season, K-State has allowed just 20.2 points per game to tie for 15th in the nation and first in the Big 12.

• K-State dominated in all three phases in a 41-0 shutout win over Houston. Will Howard started the game 12-for-12 through the air and finished 15-of-17 for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while  DJ Giddens rushed for 96 yards and two scores.

• Defensively, the Cats shut out the Cougars while forcing two turnovers. It was the first time a Houston team had been kept off the scoreboard since 2000. Houston had been averaging 28.9 points per game entering the contest.

• Prior to that, the Cats recorded a 41-3 win over TCU. Howard and Avery Johnson both engineered a Wildcat offense that generated 406 total yards in the first half and 587 for the game. The Cats ran for a season-high 343 yards on the ground as nine different Wildcats carried the ball, the most ball carriers since nine players also logged a rush at Kansas in 2021.

• Defensively, the Cats kept the Frogs out of the end zone for the first time this season and held them to three total points. TCU averaged more than 33 points per game entering the contest.

• In K-State's last road game, the Wildcats earned a 38-21 victory at Texas Tech for their eighth-straight win in the series.

• K-State rushed for 272 yards and forced three Red Raider turnovers. Johnson ran for five scores, while running back Treshaun Ward had a big night with 118 yards on 15 carries.

• Defensively, Kobe Savage picked off two Tech passes en route to Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors.

• K-State has scored at least 38 points in eight of its last 10 regular-season contests dating back to last season, its most in a 10-game stretch since doing so nine times over the 2002 and 2003 seasons

• Included in that stretch was a three-game streak of Big 12 regular-season games with at least 40 points, the longest by the Wildcats since 2012 when they had 55 points against both West Virginia and Texas Tech, and 44 points against Oklahoma State.

• Since Collin Klein started calling plays for the 2021 Texas Bowl, K-State's offense has averaged 34.5 points per game.

• The Cats currently rank 13th nationally and second in the Big 12 with 37.4 points per game this season, a figure that ranks sixth in school history.

• The K-State defense switched from a four-man front to a 3-3-5 alignment in 2021, and the change has paid off.

• In the 35 games since the defensive switch, the Cats are allowing just 20.2 points per game, which ranks 15th in the nation and tops in the Big 12.

• The Wildcats surrendered just 21.0 points per game in 2021 and 21.9 points per game last year. It marked the first time K-State allowed less than 22.0 points per game in consecutive seasons since going 13-straight years from 1991 to 2003.

No. 22 Kansas Travels to Iowa State for Big 12 Clash on Saturday

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Jerome Tang reflected upon last season, when the first-year Kansas State coach led what was nearly an entirely rebuilt roster to within a couple of buckets of the Final Four, and decided that the remarkable turnaround was pretty good.

This year, he wants to the Wildcats to be great.

That meant time spent talking with other people who have achieved greatness, and that led to a trip to Colorado and a meeting with Deion Sanders. Tang had known Ray Forsett, the chief of staff for the Hall of Famer-turned-college football coach dating to his days at Baylor, when Forsett was a prep coach and Tang was recruiting one of his players, Isaiah Austin.

“I wanted to expand what I was doing because there's a fine line between going from good to great,” Tang said. “Ray opened the opportunity for me to meet with Deion and find out about roster management, staff management, things like that from him.”

Tang also spent time with Constance Schwartz-Morini, who along with Michael Strahan founded the sports branding company SMAC Entertainment, and who helped him learn what it would take to expand the Kansas State brand.

“Not just make it national, because it already is, but make it global,” Tang explained, “because I believe that I'm in the best place in the world to compete for national championships every year. I want to do my part to put us in that position.”

Rebuilding a roster that lost Keyontae Johnson and Markquis Nowell to the NBA is a good place to start.

Tang started that process by landing two of the nation's top transfers, high-scoring guard Tylor Perry from North Texas and Creighton swingman Arthur Kaluma. Then he put the finishing touches on one of the best recruiting classes in school history, featuring a trio of four-star guards in Dai Dai Ames, Macaleab Rich and R.J. Jones.

Six-foot-10 forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin, versatile David N'Guessan and breakout candidate Cam Carter are back from last year and, coupled with the new additions, have the expectation to get right back to where they finished — and a step farther.

“New season,” N'Guessan said, “new goals.”

Perry's arrival at Kansas State is the latest stop on a slow climb through college basketball. The 5-foot-11 guard nearly committed to play at Division II Central Missouri before landing at Coffeyville Community College, where he caught the eye of North Texas — and now Texas Tech — coach Grant McCasland. Together they won the NIT title last season.

“I used to pray to be here. Used to dream to be here,” Perry said. “I can't help but be grateful that I'm here.”

Tang still isn't quite sure how Kansas State went on such a successful late-season run, but he has an idea: “We had 10 state championships on our team last year,” he said, referring to high school titles his players had won. “We had guys who had won. They'd won the last game in their career at some point in time.”

Kansas State's recruiting success, both with its incoming class and 2024 class, is a byproduct of the way the team performed last season. The more the Wildcats won, the more attention they got and the more prospects were able to see them.

“Last year, we recruited 75 guys. We did 75 Zooms with video and everything to sign 11. So 61 guys told us no," Tang recalled. “During the NCAA Tournament, I got a lot of text messages from 61 guys saying, ‘Coach, I messed up.' Or, 'Congratulations.’ My message to the new guys is you can either send me a congratulatory text or you can enjoy it with me.”

Tomlin was a big part of the Wildcats' postseason run, and his performance on the NCAA Tournament stage suddenly made him an NBA prospect. But to take the next step, Tang said, his athletic big man needs to stay out of foul trouble. Tomlin fouled out of four games, and finished with four fouls in eight more, and that limited the minutes he could be on the floor.

Kansas State will be tested right out of the gate by No. 21 USC on Nov. 6 in the Hall of Fame Series in Las Vegas. After games against Bellarmine and South Dakota State, the Wildcats head to the Baha Mar Hoops Championship in the Bahamas. Lady Cougars picked 3rd in Jayhawk pre-season poll

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Bill Self walked around T-Mobile Center last week with two broken ribs and a smile on his face.

Not surprising given the wringer he's been through the last seven months.

It began when the coach of top-ranked Kansas had chest pains on the eve of the Big 12 Tournament, landed in the hospital and wound up needing a valve replaced in his heart. The procedure caused him to miss not only the conference tourney but also the entire NCAA Tournament, or at least as long as the Jayhawks were around — which was the second round.

Six months later, the Jayhawks were stripped of their 2018 Final Four appearance and enough wins to fall behind Kentucky as the winningest program in men's college basketball. But the punishments from an independent panel, which wrapped up a years-long case that ensnared several other schools, could have been worse, and for the most part Self was cleared of wrongdoing.

So yes, Self was smiling midway through fall practices despite his latest injury.

“I actually broke two ribs the other day chasing my 5-year-old and my 3-year-old granddaughter around Allen Fieldhouse right before Late Night,” he said. “One of the least athletic moves of my life, and certainly the definition of feeling old.”

The 60-year-old Self was speaking tongue-in-cheek, and the truth is, he has every reason to feel young. The Jayhawks brought back the core of their team — Dajuan Harris Jr., Kevin McCullar and KJ Adams — while landing a top-10 recruiting class and filling their biggest holes with big wins in the transfer portal, none bigger than 7-foot-2 Michigan transfer Hunter Dickinson.

All that made them the runaway choice for No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 and a national championship contender.

“I think the expectations are there that we should be pretty good, and I do think we're fairly talented,” Self said. “I'd just as soon be ranked there than not ranked there. It makes for energy, and it makes for maybe — hopefully — some positive recruiting mail and those sorts of things. But it means absolutely nothing (in that) it will have no bearing on how good a team we have.”

That will be proven on the court, where the Jayhawks face perhaps the toughest schedule in the country.

The grind begins with No. 17 Kentucky at the Champions Classic three games into the season and includes a trip to the loaded Maui Invitational along with dates with defending champion and sixth-ranked UConn, longtime rival Missouri and Indiana.

Oh, and the Big 12 figures to be harder than ever with No. 7 Houston joining fellow newcomers UCF, BYU and Cincinnati.

“The past is motivation, of course,” McCullar said. “You want to win a national championship here at Kansas, which is what you came here to do. And that's what I really want to do: win a national championship.”

Harris is not only the reigning Big 12 defensive player of the year but also led the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio last season. McCullar made a somewhat surprising decision to return for another season, while Adams should be able to slide over to his more natural power forward position now that Dickinson has arrived at center.

Dickinson, a preseason All-American, could have gone just about anywhere after averaging more than 18 points and nearly nine rebounds each of the past two seasons. In landing at Kansas, the versatile big man not only found a place where he could be the focal point on a national title contender, but he also filled the biggest hole in the Jayhawks' roster last season.

“For me,” the outspoken and often unfiltered Dickinson said, “as long as we can buy into what coach is saying, as long as I’m playing hard and playing with intensity things should just fall into place.”

The Jayhawks also landed Nick Timberlake from Towson to fill their other big need: 3-point shooting. The sixth-year senior shot over 40% from beyond the arc each of the past two seasons.

The Jayhawks planned to have Texas transfer Arterio Morris off the bench, but he was kicked off the team last month when he was charged with rape. And with Zach Clemence expected to redshirt, the Jayhawks could be in trouble if injuries crop up.

Elmarko Jackson was the highest-rated of the three freshmen that arrived this season, and the 6-foot-3 guard from Connecticut should push Timberlake for a spot in the starting lineup. Jamari McDowell, another 6-3 guard from Texas, could see minutes off the bench. But the big surprise has been late signee Johnny Furphy, a 6-7 swingman from Australia who had a breakout performance at NBA Academy events.

Top-ranked Kansas heads into season expecting to compete for national championship

ESPN - Kansas State forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest over the weekend, coach Jerome Tang announced Monday.

Tomlin was arrested early Sunday morning for "disorderly conduct; brawling or fighting" at Tubby's Sports Bar and released on $750 bond, according to the Riley County Police Department arrest report.

"I have indefinitely suspended Nae'Qwan Tomlin for not living up to the expectations we require of our players," Tang said in a statement. "Although he is not with the team, he is still part of our family, and we will do what [we] can to support him as he moves through this process."

A 6-foot-10 forward from New York, Tomlin started 36 games last season for Kansas State, averaging 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds. He was a key factor in the Wildcats' run to the Elite Eight, scoring in double figures in all four NCAA tournament games and averaging 12.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks.

Kansas State opens its season against USC on Nov. 6 in Las Vegas, although the Wildcats also have an exhibition game against Emporia State on Wednesday.

Without Tomlin, expect Tang to rely more heavily on Creighton transfer Arthur Kaluma. He could also go smaller and use Samford transfer Ques Glover in a three-guard lineup.

ESPN - Kansas State forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest over the weekend, coach Jerome Tang announced Monday.Tomlin was arrested early Sunday morning for "disorderly conduct; brawling or fighting" at Tubby's Sports Bar and released on $750 bond, according to the Riley County Police Department arrest report."I have indefinitely suspended Nae'Qwan Tomlin for not living up to the expectations we require of our players," Tang said in a statement. "Although he is not with the team, he is still part of our family, and we will do what [we] can to support him as he moves through this process."A 6-foot-10 forward from New York, Tomlin started 36 games last season for Kansas State, averaging 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds. He was a key factor in the Wildcats' run to the Elite Eight, scoring in double figures in all four NCAA tournament games and averaging 12.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks.Kansas State opens its season against USC on Nov. 6 in Las Vegas, although the Wildcats also have an exhibition game against Emporia State on Wednesday.Without Tomlin, expect Tang to rely more heavily on Creighton transfer Arthur Kaluma. The Big 12 is running all over the other Power Five conferences when it comes to robust rushing attacks.

Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II leads the nation in rushing with 135.9 yards per game, and the Big 12 has three other running backs averaging at least 100. The other four power conferences have five 100-yard-per-game rushers combined.

The Big 12 is first among its brethren in rushing yards per game (172.8) and second in total yards (421.7).

“It’s interesting how cyclical football is in some ways,” said Sonny Dykes, the coach at TCU, where Emani Bailey has three 100-plus yard games, putting him fourth in the conference in rushing yards. "You go back and you look now, and the Big 12 was a running league forever, and then we became a four-wide league, and now it’s back to an emphasis on running the football and playing defense. And so it’s funny how this stuff cycles through.”

Big 12 squads are definitely leaning on their ball carriers this season.

Jonathon Brooks averages 115 yards per game for No. 7 Texas and, according to PFF College, has forced a Division I-leading 58 missed tackles, tops among Power 5 backs.

“As much as he’s running really good, hard yards between the tackles, he’s a home run hitter for us now, too,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said of the third-year back. “I don’t know if everybody appreciated that about him coming into the season.”

Devin Neal ran for 112 yards and a TD last week for Kansas in the 38-33 upset of then-No. 6 Oklahoma. Neal is averaging 96 per game for the No. 22 Jayhawks.

Tahj Brooks is a bright spot for struggling Texas Tech, averaging 111 yards carrying the ball.

“I’m probably as impressed with (Tahj Brooks), honestly, as anybody in the league," Dykes said. “He’s big, he’s physical, he finishes runs. I think he is the consummate right back. When you say OK, what do the great ones do? They make yards when there’s not yards to be made, and he consistently does that. Just finishes runs, plays really physical, powerful, guys bounce off of him.”

Gordon was the first — and so far, only — Power Five running back to surpass the 1,000-yard mark this season. The 6-foot-1, 211-pound second-year player ran for 282 and four TDs in the 48-34 win over West Virginia on Oct. 23, then had 271 yards and two TDs as the Cowboys crushed Cincinnati last week.

He's the just the second player in school history with back-to-back games of 250-plus rushing yards, joining Barry Sanders in 1988.

“I think Ollie has really good competitive speed," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "I think he feels guys coming behind him, and he kind of weaves and takes off pretty good. He doesn’t have that burst from 10, 15 feet. But he’s a big strider when he gets to the open field, so they kind of have a hard time getting from behind.”

West Virginia second-year back CJ Donaldson Jr., 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds, is on a roll. He romped for a season-high 121 yards and a TD last week as the Mountaineers won 41-28 at UCF. He has a touchdown in six straight games.

“When he runs like that, man, he’s a load,” West Virginia coach Neal Brown said.

Big backs are putting their stamp on the Big 12

The NCAA investigation hanging over Michigan as it heads into the final month of the season as a national championship contender is not affecting the College Football Playoff selection committee's assessment of the Wolverines.

Ohio State was No. 1, followed by Georgia, Michigan and Florida State in the season's first CFP rankings Tuesday night, with unbeaten Washington and its Pac-12 rival, Oregon, next.

The NCAA is investigating&nbsp;a sign-stealing scheme that allegedly involved impermissible in-person scouting by Michigan.

Selection committee chairman Boo Corrigan, who is the North Carolina State athletic director, said the allegations against Michigan were not part of the debate about where the Wolverines should be ranked. He called it an NCAA issue, not a CFP issue.

“Fact of the matter is no one knows what happened,” CFP executive director Bill Hancock said. “The NCAA is dealing right now with allegations only. The committee's judgments are based on what happened on the field. And clearly Michigan has been a dominant team.”

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel is also part of the 13-member selection committee.

“No, there wasn’t any suggestion that anything change regarding Warde's position on the committee,” Hancock said. “He was fully engaged in the meeting the last two days, as usual.”

The committee has a recusal policy that precludes Manuel from being part of discussions about Michigan's ranking.

“Warde brought credibility when he came to the committee and he still has it,” Hancock said.

The Buckeyes (8-0) are No. 1 in for the fourth time in the 10-year history of the CFP, and the first time since 2019. Victories over Penn State and Notre Dame, both ranked in the CFP's top-15, bolstered Ohio State's case, Corrigan said.

Two-time defending champion Georgia (8-0) and Michigan (8-0) have been Nos. 1 and 2 in The Associated Press college football poll since the preseason, but schedules light on big-time competition to this point worked against them with the 13-member selection committee.

Florida State (8-0) is in the CFP top four for the first time since the 2014 season.

Washington (8-0) beat Oregon (7-1) earlier this season and both still have ranked USC and Oregon State left on the schedule as the Pac-12 tries to snap a six-year playoff drought.

“The Pac-12 right now, from top to bottom, there's no gimmes,” Washington coach Kalen DeBoer said in an interview with ESPN.

Texas (7-1) was seventh, ahead of Alabama (7-1). The Longhorns beat the Crimson Tide, but lost to Oklahoma (7-1), which was ranked ninth.

The first of six rankings&nbsp;sets the table for a month of scrutiny on the top teams and their performances.

The final rankings will be released Dec. 3, after the conference championship games, and those set the four-team playoff field, with semifinals at the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl ahead of the national championship game on Jan. 8 in Houston.

This is the final season for this playoff format before it expands to 12 teams.

Four is the magic number for now and just once have the initial CFP rankings revealed the eventual playoff field. That was 2020, the pandemic season, which was far from normal in so many ways.

Last year, Tennessee was the committee’s first No. 1, followed by Ohio State, Georgia and Clemson. Only the Bulldogs and Buckeyes made the playoff.

Overall, 21 of the 36 teams (58%) that have appeared in the first CFP rankings of a season have made the playoff.

Among the 36 teams that have made the playoff in nine years, 29 started in the top six.

The longest climb to the CFP was Ohio State in 2014, when the Buckeyes were 16th in the committee’s first ranking. Oklahoma was No. 15 in the first rankings in 2015 and made the playoff.

The highest-ranked Group of Five conference teams were Tulane at 24th and unbeaten Air Force at No. 25. The highest ranked conference champion from outside the Power Five receives an invite to a New Year’s Six game.

Unbeaten James Madison&nbsp;is not under consideration by the committee because the Dukes are in Year 2 of their transition to the top tier of Division I and by NCAA rule are ineligible for the postseason.

games for receiving impermissible benefits. West Virginia announced
the suspension Tuesday. West Virginia’s athletic department says it
learned in late August that Kriisa admitted to receiving the benefits
while enrolled at Arizona. Kriisa arrived at West Virginia in April
with two years of eligibility remaining after three seasons with the
Wildcats. West Virginia says it worked with the NCAA to reach an
appropriate resolution. Kriisa can continue to practice and travel
with the team during his suspension. Kriisa averaged nearly 10 points
and led the Pac-12 in assists with five per game last season.

many talented players available, it’s changed how quickly coaches
can turn bad teams into good and great ones. LSU coach Kim Mulkey has

into a super team. The school won its first national championship
last season. In the last few years she’s added Angel Reese, Van
Lith and Aneesah Morrow. All three earned All-America honors last
year. All three will play for LSU this season.

two-time transfers have made navigating the portal a bit trickier.

manager Dave Ziegler. The Raiders under McDaniels went 6-11 in 2022
and are 3-5 so far this season for a .360 winning percentage.

keep interim coach Rich Bisaccia on for the full-time even after he
led the team to a surprising playoff run. The Raiders announced that
Antonio Pierce will take over as the interim coach. They host the New
York Giants on Sunday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)
— Rick Hendrick first met William Byron as a local Charlotte
teenager, fan of Hendrick Motorsports and budding NASCAR driver.
Something about the 15-year-old struck Hendrick, who recognized a
young talent with a potentially bright future in NASCAR. Hendrick
snagged Byron away from the Toyota camp in 2016, promoted him to the
Cup Series in 2018 when he was 20 years old and fresh off an Xfinity
Series championship and gave him the tools to become a star. It’s
paid off as Byron heads to Phoenix Raceway this week with a shot at
winning his first Cup title.

— Rick Hendrick first met William Byron as a local Charlotte
teenager, fan of Hendrick Motorsports and budding NASCAR driver.
Something about the 15-year-old struck Hendrick, who recognized a
young talent with a potentially bright future in NASCAR. Hendrick
snagged Byron away from the Toyota camp in 2016, promoted him to the
Cup Series in 2018 when he was 20 years old and fresh off an Xfinity
Series championship and gave him the tools to become a star. It’s
paid off as Byron heads to Phoenix Raceway this week with a shot at

Wednesday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Approaching the midway point of the regular season, the Barton Community College eSports team recorded mixed results in week four action.

Having its' three-week winning streak snapped, the Cougars constructed a 3-6 record over their nine games to sit 17-16 overall on the year. The Barton gamers will open week five Monday with another nine games on the docket.

Remaining unblemished on the season was the Overwatch 2 squad of Jared Alvidrez, Jacob Fullingim, Dominik Strba, Cameron Howell, and Cole Burtin as the five-pack pounced on Iowa Western Community College notching a 3-1 victory.

Other victories on the week came from the Fortnite clan securing a 2-0 season opening win over Pensacola College while the Call of Duty Gun Fight group opened their two matches with a 3-0 blanking over Florida Gulf Coast before falling for the first time on the season to Region VI rival Hutchinson Community College 3-0 in their second match of the week.

Barton's Call of Duty 4v4 the other lone undefeated group heading into the week had their perfect streak snapped dropping a 3-1 result to Catawba Valley Community College.
