BOSTON (AP) — Luka Doncic didn’t stay up all night to watch NBA Finals games as a kid. They usually started at something like 3 a.m. in his native Slovenia. He had school to get to a few hours later. He’d wake up and find out who won. Make no mistake, though: Doncic was paying attention. Dreams become reality for Doncic on Thursday night, when the 25-year-old makes his NBA Finals debut for the Dallas Mavericks as they take on the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of this year’s title series. He could become the first player to win a scoring title and a championship in the same season since Shaquille O’Neal in 2000, and a title would surely only add to the argument that Doncic — who leads all players in this postseason in points, rebounds and assists.
CHICAGO (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the New York Liberty to an 88-75 victory Tuesday night over the Chicago Sky, who lost rookie Angel Reese to an ejection in the fourth quarter. Reese was thrown out with 2:31 remaining after receiving two technical fouls following a brief interaction with an official. Sabrina Ionescu added 24 points for the Liberty, who won their fourth straight.
COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Sanjay Lal’s first bit of coaching to Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston didn’t have to do with route running or hand placement when vying with a cornerback while being covered. It was to focus on a fresh start after struggling as a rookie last season. Johnston, the 21st overall pick in last April’s NFL draft, did not have many highlights to look back on in his rookie season. He finished with 38 receptions for 431 yards and two touchdowns, but three dropped passes loomed large. A drop on a critical third-down pass, which would have put the Chargers in range for a tying field goal during the fourth quarter of a Week 11 game at Green Bay, has motivated Johnston throughout the offseason.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Sixteen-year-old Lily Yohannes scored in her national team debut and the United States defeated South Korea 3-0 in an exhibition on Tuesday night. Crystal Dunn and Sophia Smith also scored for the U.S., playing its second game under coach Emma Hayes. Hayes was named coach last November but remained in Europe to finish the season with Chelsea. She replaced Vlatko Andonovski, who stepped down after the U.S. was knocked out of the Women’s World Cup last summer in the round of 16. The U.S. also won the first friendly match over South Korea 4-0 on Saturday in Commerce City, Colorado. Mallory Swanson and Tierna Davidson each had a pair of goals.
