Alabama hosts Chattanooga, another FCS school. No breaks in the

to fired coaches will continue to grow until the college sports
business model changes. Texas A&amp;M will pay more than $75 million
to fired football coach Jimbo Fisher. Other top coaches have buyouts

is run by stakeholders rather than stockholders and the bottom line
is measured by victories rather than profits. He says there will be
no end to these golden parachutes until the business model changes
and significantly more revenue is redirected to the athletes.

Giving Deshaun Watson a fully guaranteed $230 million contract has
turned into another disaster for the Cleveland Browns. It’s the
biggest one yet for a franchise known for its failures. Watson will
miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury that requires
surgery, a devastating blow for a 6-3 team with a stingy defense and
playoff hopes. The ramifications of the injury extend far beyond this
season, too. Watson is owed $46 million each of the next three years
with a cap hit of almost $64 million per season.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J.
(AP) — Aaron Rodgers will have the final call on whether he plays
again this season for the New York Jets if and when he gets medical
clearance. Coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday the team will defer to
the four-time NFL MVP, who’s rehabilitating from a torn left
Achilles tendon four snaps into his debut with the Jets on Sept. 11.
Rodgers turns 40 on Dec. 2 and has repeatedly said his goal is to
return late this season. But Rodgers has also said the Jets would
need to be in the playoff hunt at that point for him to come back.

The NBA has suspended Golden State’s Draymond Green for five games
for grabbing Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert around the neck “in an
unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner.” Also penalized by the league
for their roles in the incident, which happened early in Tuesday’s
game between the Timberwolves and Warriors, were Gobert, his
Minnesota teammate Jaden McDaniels and Golden State guard Klay
Thompson — all fined $25,000 by the league. McDaniels and Thompson
were both ejected from the game, as was Green. But Green will pay the
biggest price, both in terms of games missed and money lost. The
suspension will cause him to forfeit $769,704 in salary.

(AP) — Major League Baseball owners are set to vote on the proposed
relocation of the Oakland Athletics to Las Vegas at the end of their
league-wide meeting Thursday. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is
presenting his recommendation to the 30 owners during the three-day
meeting. It comes about six months after the A’s reached a
tentative agreement for a new stadium in Las Vegas after being unable
to reach a deal for one in Oakland. Any recommendation for a move
would require a vote from at least 23 owners for approval. MLB hasn't
had a team relocate since the Montreal Expos became the Washington
Nationals in 2005.

Gerrit Cole was a unanimous winner of his first American League Cy
Young Award, and Blake Snell took the NL honor in becoming the
seventh hurler to earn baseball’s top pitching prize in both
leagues. After coming close several times before, Cole finally

Yankees. The ace right-hander received all 30 first-place votes in
balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. He
became the sixth Yankees winner and first since Roger Clemens in
2001. Snell was the National League winner after leading the majors
with a 2.25 ERA for the San Diego Padres. The free-agent lefty was
picked first on 28 of 30 ballots.

Formula One has arrived in Las Vegas for a week of parties, concerts,
celebrity-packed events and eventually Saturday night's race. F1's
first trip to Las Vegas in 41 years promises to be nothing like any

Whether due to injuries or coaching decisions, staying on the field has been a challenge for many of the league's quarterbacks who started the season No. 1 for their programs.

Injuries have knocked out starters at some point in the season for Texas, Kansas, BYU, Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, West Virginia and Central Florida — more than half the league.

Oklahoma State's quarterback carousel lasted through the first few games before coach Mike Gundy settled on Alan Bowman. Even Kansas State, which won last season's Big 12 championship game behind veteran Will Howard, put in freshman Avery Johnson when Howard struggled. The senior responded with his best play of the season.

The position has been as jumbled as the league standings. Seven teams are within two games of conference leader Texas.

Oklahoma and Iowa State have been injury- and rotation-free and the Sooners and Cyclones are still in the mix for the league championship. Dillon Gabriel has been exceptional at times for the Sooners, leading&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-longhorns-oklahoma-sooners-red-river-rivalry-e4693ccedcb17bca3a62e8d13ea614e6">a win over Texas</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/oklahoma-westvirginia-dillongabriel-sooners-57d17df8e7d0bd0acc79890c7c6c20fa">setting school records</a>&nbsp;last week against West Virginia,

Iowa State's Rocco Becht was thrust into the starting role because Hunter Dekkers was snagged by the state investigation into Iowa and Iowa State athletes engaging in sports wagering. Dekkers pleading guilty to underage gambling and paid a fine, and hasn't played while serving an NCAA suspension.

League front runner Texas won two games with backup Maalik Murphy in for injured starter Quinn Ewers. Ewers returned last week for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-longhorns-tcu-horned-frogs-5dfcc4b2e49707505ac53e505816922c">29-26 win over TCU</a>, but Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian praised his team's ability to win with Murphy.

Texas has Ewers back on the field for two critical games, against Iowa State and Texas Tech. Texas is pursuing its first Big 12 title since 2009 in what will be the program's last season in the league before heading to the Southeastern Conference along with Oklahoma next summer.

“I think he was a little sore” after the TCU game, Sarkisian said. “But as the weeks go on, if we can continue to protect like we did the other night, he’s going to continue to get healthy.”

BYU's first season in the Big 12 included a plan to redshirt junior college transfer Jake Retzlaff as an understudy to Kedon Slovis. That plan blew up with an injury to Slovis' throwing arm, and Retzlaff struggled in losses to West Virginia and Iowa State.

UCF's Big 12 debut saw starter John Rhys Plumlee knocked off the field for a month with a knee injury.

TCU has lost three in a row behind freshman Josh Hoover, who took over for Chandler Morris (knee sprain). Morris was the starter in 2022 when he was injured in the first game. Max Duggan took over and led the Horned Frogs to the national championship game.

“I think that's just kind of the nature of college football and, you know, just look around the league and again, starting with us, there's a lot of starting quarterbacks that have gone down,” TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. “It's just kind of the nature of the beast.”

No team has had more hard luck at quarterback than Kansas.

The Jayhawks had the preseason offensive player of the year in Jalon Daniels in Lance Leipold's emerging program. But he has played only three games because of back problems and was a pre-game scratch before a 40-14 loss to Texas. He hasn't returned.

Jason Bean has started in his place and led the program's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/sports/oklahoma-sooners-college-football-kansas-jayhawks-0b89980c99565c31351703450154353b">historic win over Oklahoma</a>. Bean sustained a head injury last week against Texas Tech. That left the Jayhawks with walk-on Cole Ballard, the son of Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard, playing most of the game in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/red-raiders-jayhawks-05f574b287525272e280af4b9c8c6d0a">16-13 loss.</a>

Leipold said he is “very optimistic” Bean will return this week.

Big 12 quarterbacks have taken their lumps; 8 teams have lost starters

CHICAGO (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self delivered a relatively simple pitch to Hunter Dickinson. He told the big man he would get the ball a lot. He told him he would get to play with some great players, and have a chance to win a national championship.

“I think he's been truthful so far,” Dickinson said.

Dickinson had 27 points and 21 rebounds, and the top-ranked Jayhawks outlasted No. 17 Kentucky for an 89-84 victory in the Champions Classic on Tuesday night.

The 7-foot-2 Dickinson, who announced in May that he was transferring from Michigan to Kansas, went 8 for 12 from the field and 10 for 11 at the line.

The young Wildcats, playing without a pair of injured centers, fought hard inside, but Dickinson was just too much to handle.

“What he does is he takes pressure off everybody else by having everybody else focused on him,” Self said. “So that’s a big bonus.”

Dajuan Harris Jr. scored 23 points for the Jayhawks, who trailed by as many as 14 in the second half. Kevin McCullar Jr. had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the third triple-double in the history of the program.

Kansas (3-0) closed the game with an 11-1 run. Harris opened the decisive stretch with a 3-pointer and two foul shots. Dickinson then put the Jayhawks in front with two free throws that made it 85-83 with 2:04 to go.

Kentucky (2-1) had a couple chances to tie the game in the final 1:02, but came up empty each time. After Reed Sheppard missed a 3 with 6 seconds left, Jamari McDowell made two foul shots to help close it out for Kansas.

Antonio Reeves scored 24 points for Kentucky, but he went 3 for 17 from 3-point range. Adou Thiero finished with 16 points and 13 boards.

“It feels good to have this type of performance, but when you don’t walk away with a W it doesn’t really feel the same,” Thiero said.

Rob Dillingham, part of another stellar freshman class at Kentucky, scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half. He was whistled for his fourth foul midway through the second half and eventually fouled out.

“To come in this environment with this, you know, everything that goes with this, the bells and whistles, and they perform like they did, I couldn’t ask for much more other than make some free throws and a shot down the stretch and win,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said.

With the season on the brink, the 5th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team scored an 85th minute goal before burying a golden goal penalty kick to stay alive at the National Tournament with a 2-1 victory over 2nd ranked Salt Lake Community College on Tuesday evening at Wichita's Styker Sports Complex. 

Now 18-3-3 on the year, Barton's victory forces a unique scenario in Pool C in determining who advances out to the semifinals. Salt Lake, who was in the driver's seat to advance, takes their second loss of the year dropping to 17-2-2. 

Next on the agenda is a bizarre mini-pool tournament held on Wednesday as the trio of teams in the pool are tied after three tie-break scenarios.  Barton will get a 1:00 p.m. rematch with Indian Hills, the same Warrior team that knocked off Barton Monday on a 2-1 second period golden goal victory with the Cougars playing two-men down.  Twenty minutes following the conclusion, the victor will take on Salt Lake in the same format with the victor advancing to Thursday's National Semfinals.

Set pieces set up both teams' regulation time goals, Salt Lake getting on the board thirty-one minutes in the contest as Khaya Gregory bodied in Carles Zomeno's free kick.

Playing without two key defenseman in Kimito Fritz and Henrique Cruz serving a game suspension from Monday's opening pool play, the Cougars stayed stout the rest of the contest giving the offensive attack time for the equalizer.

Like the Bruins, Barton would eventually capitalize on a set piece as Lucas Dos Santos delivered off Nicolas Galanis' corner kick to head in the equalizer with 4:18 remaining for the freshman's first collegiate goal.

in which the Orioles improved to 83-79 in 2022 and he finished second

tour business during some turbulent times. That includes dealing with
the COVID-19 pandemic and most recently the threat and then

international player to serve on the policy board. He ends his season
in Dubai this week on the European tour.

Barton Men ranked No. 9 in NJCAA D-I Poll

The 8th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team battled but came up short 5-4 in penalty kicks late Monday evening to 3rd ranked Tyler Junior College in pool play action of the NJCAA National Tournament.

Pitching a shutout for 110 minutes and playing without two starters, the second straight hard luck result at Wichita's Stryker Sports Complex officially ends the Cougars season at 14-3-4.  Tyler, now 16-1-2, will next play Eastern Florida State College on Tuesday in the 5:30 p.m. pool play decisive contest for the right to advance to the national semifinals.

Having played last season in pool play on the national stage, the Cougars did everything they could to avenge last year's 2-0 loss to the Apaches.  Playing stout defense in sacrificing its usual offensive minded attack, Barton shifted its play in the final thirty minutes of action creating multiple scoring chances including a near miss strike in the closing seconds of the final golden goal period.

Moving to penalty kicks in determining the result, Tyler went first in the alternative spot kicks putting pressure on the Cougars each time by rattling the net on all five attacks.  Barton responded each time to match the Apaches, going to the fifth round where the result was decided as Barton's final strike hit the post setting off two-sides of emotions from the teams.

For the Cougars, the shot off the post was a symbolic of the final two weeks of the season.  The rough closeout for the KJCCC Champions began two weeks ago in the Plains District Championship, going down a player for the final forty-five minutes and losing the title on a 70th minute goal.  On Sunday in the opening pool play, a revamped game plan shifting the nation's top-five goal scorer Nina Norshie to the backline, the Cougars still created scoring opportunities but fell in unlucky fashion as a 64th minute goal provided the 1-0 defeat.  Following the devasting loss, the Cougars would be facing another blow to its starting lineup in losing star midfielder Aya Saiki to injury.  Again revamping the lineup and game plan, Coach Camara's squad put up a valiant effort that again came up just short on the scoreboard but left the Cougars a lot to be proud of through its adversity.

Jones and Perry each hit a pair of 3s during the run.

Kansas State shot 57% overall (35 of 61). Carter and Perry also combined for 11 of 24 Wildcats assists.

Charlie Easley scored 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting to lead South Dakota State (1-2). Luke Appel chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds. Zeke Mayo finished with 11 points.

Kansas State plays Providence in the Baha Mar Hoops in Nassau, Bahamas on Friday.

The opening week of the college basketball season had one marquee game, No. 3 Arizona's win at No. 9 Duke.

Week 2 will have two on the same night at the same place.

The opening game of the State Farm Champions Classic in Chicago Tuesday night will feature Duke against No. 18 Michigan State. The nightcap at United Center will pit top-ranked Kansas against No. 17 Kentucky.

Duke opened the season No. 2 the AP Top 25 preseason poll, but dropped seven spots in this week's poll after a 78-73 loss to Arizona, which moved up nine spots to No. 3.

The Blue Devils (1-1) went back and forth with the Wildcats all night at Cameron Indoor Stadium until Arizona hit six straight free throws in the final 20 seconds to win it.

Michigan State (1-1) entered the season with high expectations for a team loaded with talent and experience. The Spartans took a big fall in this week's poll, dropping 14 places after losing in overtime at home to No. 24 James Madison, which is ranked for the first time in program history.

Tyson Walker was superb for Michigan State, scoring 35 points, but he had the ball poked away from behind in the closing seconds.

“We’re in the process of growth, we’re learning a lot about ourselves, the things we need to correct,” Michigan State forward Malik Hall said. “I think it’s better now than in March.”

Kansas opened the season as the No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 and stayed there in the first regular-season poll after a pair easy wins. The Jayhawks (2-0) beat North Carolina Central by 44 points in their opener and followed with a 38-point win over Manhattan.

Kansas will face a much stiffer test against Kentucky.

The Wildcats entered the season with plenty of questions, but coach John Calipari brought in one of his best freshmen classes in recent years. Kentucky looked good in its first two games, beating New Mexico State and Texas A&amp;M Commerce by a combined 60 points.

“It’ll be a totally different animal than what we’ve experienced so far,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We’ll be very excited about it. I know that both programs will and both sets of players and should be a lot of fun.”

No. 4 Marquette will face its first big challenge of the season at No. 23 Illinois on Tuesday.

The health of All-American point guard Tyler Kolek will be a key for the Golden Eagles (2-0).

Kolek turned his ankle in the second half of Marquette's 95-65 win over Rider on Friday and didn't return.

“We’ll see how it responds. He’ll get treatment," Marquette coach Shaka Smart said. "Knowing Tyler, he’s a guy that he’ll find a way to be on the floor when he needs to be on the floor.”

The Golden Eagles are going to have their hands full either way.

The Illini (2-0) have one of the nation's most experience teams, led by Terrence Shannon Jr. and Coleman Hawkins. Illinois beat Eastern Illinois by 28 points and Oakland by 11 to open the season.

James Madison will play its first game as a ranked team Friday against Radford.

The Dukes won 22 games and just missed the NCAA Tournament last season, but could be on course to play in March Madness for the first time since 2013.

James Madison pulled off the biggest upset of the early season, knocking off then-No. 4 Michigan State in overtime in East Lansing behind Terrence Edwards' 24 points.

Marquee doubleheader in Chicago headlines the week in AP Top 25 hoops

Beating a good team twice in a season and playing two-men down was too much for the 5th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team to overcome as a second golden goal period net shaker dealt the Cougars a 1-0 National Tournament loss to 9th ranked Indian Hills Community College.

Barton had defeated the Warriors 3-1 earlier in the season but Monday afternoon at the Stryker Sports Complex, the challenges eventually took its toll in the Cougars' pool play opener and sets up another uphill obstacle on Tuesday.

Dropping to 17-3-3 on the year and 0-1-0 in group C play, the Cougars will look to keep the season alive Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. needing to defeat 2nd ranked and 3rd seeded Salt Lake Community College by two or more goals to advance out of pool play. The 10th seeded Warriors improve to 10-3-4 overall and now await Tuesday's result after concluding pool play 1-1-0.

Scoreless after the opening 45-minutes with neither team producing many opportunities, the Cougars broke through with the opening goal just 5:37 into second half play on Augusto Militao's 20-yard free kick for his third of the season.

Grasping all momentum, things quickly took a turn for the worst just 2:02 ensuing as an initial yellow card was overturned into a red card after a referee conference sending Kimito Fritz off the pitch putting Barton a man down with 37:35 remaining in regulation.

Switching into a defensive mindset, the Cougars encountered an additional devastating blow to the backline with 16:52 remaining as a second yellow card issued to Henrique Cruz put Barton at a two-man disadvantage.

Keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard for the following 12:29, the eventual equalizer came with 4:23 remaining on Gustavo Marques' 25-yard strike to the far post.

Despite pitching a scoreless opening 10-minute golden goal period, the outmanned disadvantage caught up to the Cougars just 27-seconds into the second extra golden goal period as Marques struck again in putting away Daniel Mulero's cross.

Indian Hills drops Barton 2-1 at NJCAA Nationals

the field, including 3 of 6 on 3-pointers. Cryer had struggled in his
first two games with the Cougars shooting 7 of 26 and 3 of 16 on
3-pointers.Mylik Wilson scored 11 points, and Terrance Arceneaux had
10 points for Houston, which leaned on its defense forcing 23
turnovers and turning it into 39 points. The Cougars (3-0) had 17
steals. Houston shot 53% and were 9 of 20 on 3-pointers.

College Football Playoff is on the verge of major changes, including
expansion, its next media rights deal and possibly evolving its role
as an organizing body in college sports. All that will happen while
breaking in a new leader. Lt. Gen. Richard Clark was hired last week
to become the CFP’s second executive director, replacing Bill
Hancock. Clark was a former Air Force football player and has had a
38-year military career. Mississippi State President Mark Keenum
praised Clark for being a leader and diplomat.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) —
A season-ending knee injury for Texas starting running back Jonathon
Brooks opens the door for freshman C.J. Baxter to step into the role.
Baxter was the starter when the season began but was limited by
injuries in the first two games. Brooks took over and turned into a
dominant rusher for the Longhorns and was ranked among the national
leaders when he sustained a torn knee ligament last week against TCU.
Baxter has been a steady backup and is fully healthy from his earlier
dings to step into the role. Seventh-ranked Texas plays at Iowa State

said he would save his opinions on the conference’s punishment for

(AP) — Wil Lutz got a do-over and kicked a 36-yard field goal as
time expired, and the Denver Broncos won their third straight by
rallying for a 24-22 victory over the sloppy, turnover-prone Buffalo
Bills. Lutz got a second chance after he missed wide right with four
seconds remaining from 41 yards, but the play was negated when
Buffalo was flagged for having 12 players on the field. The Broncos
improved to 4-5 and have won three straight and four of six since a
70-20 loss at Miami. The Bills dropped to 5-5 following an outing in
which they turned the ball over four times, with quarterback Josh
Allen throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble.

Baltimore Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson and Arizona Diamondbacks
outfielder Corbin Carroll were both unanimous selections for MLB’s
Rookie of the Year awards on Monday night, with Henderson winning the
honor in the American League and Carroll earning the National League
award. The well-rounded stars used power, speed and defense to help
their respective franchises to the playoffs after both teams lost 110
games just two seasons ago. It’s just the fifth time overall and
the first time since 2017 that both the AL and NL selections were
unanimous. Aaron Judge won that year for the Yankees while Cody
Bellinger won for the Dodgers.

Craig Counsell was ready for a new challenge and couldn’t pass up
the opportunity to manage the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs hired the
53-year-old Counsell away from Milwaukee last week, landing the
former big leaguer with a record contract and firing David Ross in a
pair of surprising moves. He became the majors’ highest paid
manager with a five-year contract worth more than $40 million.
Counsell says he “thought that a new challenge was where I had to
push myself.” Counsell led the budget-conscious Brewers to five
playoff appearances in the past six years, including three NL Central
titles.

leaders when he sustained a torn knee ligament last week against TCU.

IRVING, Texas – Kansas senior center Hunter Dickinson averaged 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and shot 4-of-4 from three-point range to be named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. This is the first weekly honor for Dickinson and a KU player in 2023-24.

A native of Alexandria, Virginia, Dickinson scored 21 points in just 24 minutes in his Kansas debut against North Carolina Central on Nov. 6, which ended with a 99-56 win for the Jayhawks. Dickinson went 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and was almost perfect from the field, going 8-for-9 with eight rebounds, five assists, two blocked shots and one steal.

In Kansas’ 99-61 win against Manhattan College on Nov. 10, Dickinson posted 18 points, eight rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes. Dickinson has scored in double figures 85 times in his career, including in both of his games at Kansas. Against Manhattan, Dickinson secured his 800th career rebound.

The first Associated Press men's basketball poll of the regular season is typically a jumble of teams swapping positions as preseason expectations meet the reality of playing actual games.

The first poll of the 2023-24 is no different.

Kansas remained at No. 1 and received 51 first-place votes from a 62-person media panel in the poll released Monday, but the rest of the AP Top 25 was filled with teams moving up and down.

No. 2 Purdue moved up a spot with two easy opening wins and received seven first-place votes. No. 3 Arizona took a giant leap from 12 after beating Duke and had three first-place votes.

No. 4 Marquette moved up a spot as did defending national champion Connecticut, which received a first-place vote to round out the top five. No. 24 James Madison moved into the poll for the first time ever after taking down Michigan State in overtime.

Arizona's rapid rise stemmed from a successful trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Wildcats were a bit of an unknown entity in coach Tommy Lloyd's third season with several new players replacing key losses from a team that lost to Princeton in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Arizona answered some of the questions with an impressive road performance, knocking off Duke 78-73 after blowing out Morgan State in its opener. The Blue Devils dropped to No. 9 after the loss.

“I said play with poise because you’re the better team,” Lloyd said. "Trust that you’re the better team over the course of 40 minutes. I knew that it would be a small margin but I feel like that. I love this group of guys and feel like we’re going to be as good a ball club as anybody in the country.”

Mark Byington has gradually strengthened James Madison's program from 13 wins in his first season in 2020-21 to 22 last year.

The Dukes appear to still be on the rise after pulling off the biggest upset of the early season. Unfazed by playing the nation's No. 4 team on the road, James Madison went to East Lansing and knocked off Michigan State 79-76 in overtime.

The win earned the Dukes their first AP Top 25 ranking since transitioning to Division I in 1976 and knocked the Spartans down 14 spots to No. 18.

"We’re not scared of names,” T.J. Bickerstaff said after scoring 21 points, including a tying shot with 30 seconds left in regulation. “We go hard.”

Florida Atlantic had its highest ranking at No. 10 in the preseason poll after last year's surprising run to the Final Four. The Owls returned nearly everyone from that team and got this season off to a solid start with a 75-62 win over Loyola Chicago to remain in the top 10 this week.
