KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas State signed football coach Chris Klieman to a new eight-year contract Monday that will pay an average of $5.5 million annually and could keep him tied to the defending Big 12 champion Wildcats through the 2030 season.

The $44 million deal replaces a contract due to end after the 2026 season that paid Klieman an average of $4 million annually.

“What we have been able to accomplish in our first four years here is due to the culture that our players and staff have been able to create,” Klieman said in a statement. “I am excited to continue to lead this football program and put a product on the field each year that can compete at the highest level.”

Klieman added that Kansas State, which is situated about 2 hours from Kansas City and must overcome some geographic disadvantages when it comes to recruiting, has everything it needs to consistently contend for championships.

That includes a new indoor training facility that just opened next to Bill Snyder Family Stadium, which itself has undergone millions in renovations over the years, putting it in the upper echelon of major college football stadiums.

“Chris has done an unbelievable job building a program in four years that not only has won a Big 12 championship but even more importantly, one that players have taken great pride in and helped sustain a championship culture,” said Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor, who hired Klieman away from North Dakota State to replace the retired Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder.

“We want to continue the momentum that he and his staff have fostered,” Taylor said. “We are excited that Chris will be the leader of out football program for many years to come.”

The 55-year-old Klieman won four national titles in five years at North Dakota State, which plays a step down in the Football Championship Subdivision, but many still wondered whether that success would translate to college football's highest level.

Klieman went 8-5 and reached the Liberty Bowl in his first season, slipped to 4-6 during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, and went 8-5 again the following year with a win in the Texas Bowl that provided momentum into last season.

Led by All-American running back Deuce Vaughn and defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, a first-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs, the Wildcats beat TCU in the Big 12 title game — before the Horned Frogs went on to the College Football Playoffs. It was the first conference title for Kansas State since 2012, when Snyder was in his second tenure in Manhattan, Kansas.

Klieman is 30-20 in four seasons with the Wildcats, while his overall college coaching record of 102-33 puts him among the best winning percentages in history. The 30 wins are the most by a Kansas State coach over their first four years.

Kansas State should contend for another Big 12 championship this season.

The Wildcats return quarterback Will Howard, all five starting offensive lineman and several playmakers on defense, including linebacker Daniel Green and safety Kobe Savage. They added Florida State transfer Treshaun Ward to replace Vaughn at running back, Iowa wide receiver Keegan Johnson and one of the best freshman classes in school history.

In September, the Wichita State University Board of Trustees approved funding for phases 1A and 1B for the capital improvement plan to remake Cessna Stadium into a state-of-the-art home for Wichita State athletics, university and community events and the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship.

“We are planning to host the KSHSAA Track and Field Championships in Wichita both during, and long after, this renovation project is complete,” Wichita State director of athletics Kevin Saal said.

·&nbsp;Timing of all demolition and renovations will be scheduled to avoid interruption of the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship in future years.

·&nbsp;Demolition of the east stands of Cessna Stadium will begin immediately after the state track meet this year. Phase 1A begins in the fall with work scheduled to begin on improvements on the east side of the existing track (underground utility work, seating area for approximately 3,600 with a combination of bleacher seats and terraces designed for tents, free-standing field lights, fencing, ticket pavilion, restroom/storage buildings, and plaza).&nbsp;Work is scheduled to be completed before the 2024 Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship.

·&nbsp;The west side of the stadium, capacity around 12,000, will remain standing to allow for continued operation of the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship. Demolition of the west side of the stadium can begin as early as June 2025.

·&nbsp;Capacity of the stadium, when completed, is planned for approximately 13,500.

·&nbsp;Phase 1B begins after the 2024 Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship and includes widening the field and a 9-lane track. Bleacher seating on the north and south sides of the stadium is included.

·&nbsp;Future phases include a new west stadium structure with seating for more than 6,000. The new west stadium would include a single level of press boxes and viewing decks, offices/locker rooms/team room areas for a future soccer team, as well as restrooms, concessions and storage rooms.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 KSHSAA releases information concerning state track meet

Great Bend High School swim coach Klara Gilbert had May 11 circled on her calendar. Two years ago, Garden City ended Great Bend's run of 17-straight WAC titles. The Lady Panthers took the crown back last year and wanted to keep it that way Thursday in Hays. The two squads swam away from the competition. Great Bend scored 584 points for the win, and Garden City scored 537 points for second. Dodge City scored 346 points for third.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Emilee Hall, Clarise Snapp, Elly Somers, and Josephine Mazouch won perhaps the best race of the day, beating Garden City by 0.01 seconds in 2:00.27. The team of Reggie Huslig, Ava Gregg, Alyvia Mingenback, and Darcy Feist placed third in 2:16.92.

Hall won the WAC title in the 200-yard free by more than a second in 2:15.34. Braylee Carper took the bronze in 2:24.08. Somers finished second in the 200 IM in 2:33.71 to miss the title by eight seconds. Hall won a second title in the 100 back, finishing in 1:05.15 to beat Garden City by three seconds. Huslig finished third in 1:12.62.

Somers collected the gold in the 100 butterfly by nearly a second in 1:08.91. Huslig placed third in 1:20.15, and Mingenback picked up valuable points in fifth in 1:23.57.

Carper brought home the title in the 500 free by six seconds in 6:29.53. Katelyn Mermis placed fourth in 6:40.01 to miss the bronze by 1.2 seconds. Ellie Lutt finished sixth in 7:14.00.

Competition was tough in the 50-yard free. Mazouch missed the state qualifying time by just 0.04 seconds in 26.87 but finished third, just 0.04 seconds behind the silver. Kamryn Johns placed fifth in 28.49, and Sydney Kruckenberg swam sixth in 28.53. Mazouch placed second in the 100 free in 59.70, five seconds off the pace. Johns finished fifth in 1:03.12.

The Lady Panthers had a big day in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Johns, Snapp, Kruckenberg, and Carper won by nine seconds in 1:54.88. The squad of Feist, Mingenback, Lutt, and Sydney Gilkison finished third in 2:05.18.

The 400-yard freestyle relay saw similar results. The team of Somers, Johns, Mazouch, and Hall won by less than a second in 4:03.22. The relay of Kruckenberg, Lutt, Feist, and Carper swam third in 4:31.22.

Snapp placed third in the 100-yard breast in 1:21.88 to miss the silver by two seconds. Gregg finished fifth in 1:26.75, and Lakyn Caroll picked up 12 points in seventh in 1:29.97.

Lady Panther swimmers edge Garden City for WAC title

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Christian Yelich continued to heat up at the plate and created even more fireworks on the basepaths as he helped the Milwaukee Brewers complete a sweep of the Kansas City Royals.

After homering twice on Saturday, Yelich went deep again Sunday in the Brewers' 9-6 victory. He also hit an RBI single and scored on a bizarre play as part of Milwaukee’s seven-run outburst in the third inning.

Yelich is batting .348 (16 of 46) with four homers and 12 RBIs in May. The 2018 NL MVP hit just .228 with three homers and 11 RBIs in April.

“I'm just making adjustments and just trying to find ways to contribute,” Yelich said. “You're constantly tinkering with things and trying to be the best version of yourself, whatever that is, each day. For me, each day's a new day."

Brice Turang added a three-run shot and Mike Brosseau also homered for the NL Central-leading Brewers.

Kansas City’s Salvador Perez homered for the second straight day, Bobby Witt Jr. had a homer and a two-run double and Hunter Dozier also went deep.

The Royals led 4-1 before it all fell apart for them in the bottom of the third. Yelich was at the center of that rally.

After his RBI single put runners on the corners with nobody out in the third, Yelich attempted to steal second. That’s when things got weird.

Royals shortstop Maikel Garcia missed the throw from Perez, and Joey Wiemer raced home from third as the ball went into the outfield. After sliding into second, Yelich got up and took off for third.

The throw from center fielder Nate Eaton took a couple of bounces, went through Dozier's legs and appeared to bounce off the body of Brewers third-base coach Jason Lane. As the ball started to roll back toward home in foul territory, Yelich headed toward the plate.

Dozier chased down the ball, dove and pushed the ball toward Perez, but his toss couldn’t get there before Yelich slid home safely with the tying run. Garcia and Eaton were charged with errors on the play.

“I don't really think (Eaton's throw) was off line,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “I think it just got hidden behind the runner going second to third, so Dozier couldn't find it. He said as it came out from underneath the runner, he tried to block it and it just got through him, and then obviously it got kicked by the third base coach and it was just a comedy of errors at that point.”

Owen Miller delivered an RBI double later in the inning. Brice Turang capped the rally by sending a 2-2 changeup from Jose Cuas over the center-field wall for a 408-foot blast.

Royals starter Jordan Lyles (0-7) allowed seven runs – all earned – in 2 1/3 innings. Lyles owns a 7.14 ERA in his first season with the Royals, who signed him to a two-year, $17 million contract last December.

Milwaukee's Eric Lauer (4-4) struck out six and allowed two runs, two walks and two hits over 5 1/3 innings in his first relief appearance since 2021. Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell had said Saturday the Brewers would skip Lauer’s next scheduled start.

Lauer, who had lost his last three starts, entered in the fourth and didn't allow a hit until Dozier and Witt homered off him in the ninth.

“Overall it was a good job of kind of what I wanted to go out there and feel as far as just getting on the mound, competing and just kind of letting it loose and not worrying about how long I'm going to be in there and how many pitches I'm going to have to throw,” Lauer said. “It's that bullpen kind of mentality that I have to have. It was a good flip-switch for me.”

Brewers starter Colin Rea allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings.

play as part of Milwaukee’s seven-run outburst in the third as the
Brewers defeated the Kansas City Royals 9-6. Brice Turang added a

his glove and said something toward the Philadelphia dugout after the
last out of the top of the seventh.  Colorado has won nine of 13
following an 8-20 start.

after getting hit by a line drive off the bat of Philadelphia’s
Nick Castellanos. Feltner was injured Saturday night and was
discharged from Swedish Medical Center on Sunday. He will not need
surgery. Feltner was put on the 15-day injured list. When asked
whether the 26-year-old right-hander will be out for days, weeks or
months, Black said “probably on the longer end of that.”

title as the No. 1 national seed in the upcoming 64-team NCAA Women’s
Softball Tournament. The Sooners will host the Norman Regional at

(AP) — Jonathan Marchessault scored three goals for his second
career postseason hat trick as the Vegas Golden Knights beat the
Edmonton Oilers 5-2 in Game 6 of their second-round series to advance
to the Western Conference final. Reilly Smith and William Karlsson
also scored for the Golden Knights, and Ivan Barbashev had two
assists. Adin Hill finished with 39 saves. Connor McDavid and Warren
Foegele scored early in the first period for Edmonton, which led 2-1
less than three minutes into the game. Stuart Skinner gave up four
goals on 17 shots through two periods, and Jack Campbell stopped all
four shots he faced in the third. Vegas will next face the winner of
the series between Dallas and Seattle, which heads to a Game 7 on

DARLINGTON, S.C.
(AP) — William Byron avoided a wreck between Ross Chastain and Kyle
Larson on a restart six laps from the end and held on to win the
Goodyear 400 in overtime at Darlington Raceway. Byron was pushed out
of the lead by eventual winner Joey Logano two laps from the end here
a year ago. This time, Byron watched as Chastain and Larson collided,
then drove away from Kevin Harvick for his third win this year and
the seventh of his career. It was the 100th win for the No. 24 car of
Hendrick Motorsports.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP)
— Jason Day has his first PGA Tour victory in five years at the
Byron Nelson. The Australian shot a 9-under 62 for a one-shot victory
over Austin Eckroat and Si Woo Kim. Hometown favorite Scottie
Scheffler finished three shots back. Day broke a tie with Scheffler
with a chip-in birdie at the par-4 12th. Day finished at 23 under
playing on Mother's Day a little more than a year after losing his
mom to cancer. Day's win came the week before the PGA Championship.
The only major among the 35-year-old's 13 victories was the 2015 PGA.

Ranked 7th headed to the final tournament of the season, the Barton Community College women's golf team put together a trio of solid rounds this week to finish 6th at the NJCAA Division I Championships held at Garden City's Buffalo Dunes Golf Course.

The team accomplishment matched the 2019 Cougars' placement on the national stage and the 6th time in program history within the top ten placings.

Barton opened the four days of competition with a field first round 3rd best 311 card, climbing back up the board from ninth following a disappointing second round 322 by recouping with another pair of sold rounds of 310 and 312.

Finishing at 103-over 1255, the Cougars bettered the previous program 4-round national tournament best by 101 strokes than the 9th place 2018 season's team.

The tournament team leaderboard had Barton one shot from tying McLennan Community College and just twelve strokes from 4th place Odessa College's 1246. Seminole State College (FL) ran away with a twenty-two stroke victory at a 1201 total for their fourth straight title, Daytona State Collège in second at 1223, and Western Texas Community College placing third at 1232.

For the first time in program history, the Cougars had two in the top eighteen of the national tournament, Yu Wi Chiang tying for 9th with Saya Schweitzer at 14th overall. Following tie break procedures, Chiang was awarded the 11th position for 2nd team All-America honors finishing at 18-over 306 while Schweitzer's 21-over 309 earned Honorable Mention All-America distinction.

The pair are the 4th and 5th in program history under Head Coach Doug Kaiser, the first since Peerada Piddon's consecutive honors in 2016 and 2017 and join Natthakan Teeratrakul' honor in 2014.

Chiang finished day one in 15th place with a 5-over 77, carded consecutive 75 rounds to move into 5th before a closing round of 79 dropped the University of Cincinnati signee four spots to 9th overall of the 86-competitor field.

Schweitzer consistent trio of 79 rounds moved the freshman from 24th to 29th going into the final round, firing an even par 72 on Friday to vault up the board fifteen spots to 14th.

As Chiang ranked in the five of Par 4 scoring and drained seven birdies in the four days, Schweitzer tied three others with 11 birdies to lead the tournament as the team sunk a field third most 30 under par holes.

Victor of the three KJCCC meets on the season, Pornnapa Inmee was one of five competitors to card an eagle on the Championship course in finishing 31st overall at 31-over 319. Inmee hovered around the +8 mark in her four rounds, carding and 81 and 80 with Thursday's 78 round helping Barton close the gap up the leaderboard before winding up her Barton career with another 80.

The first time on the big stage didn't phase Valentina Leyva as the freshman's debut 2-over par stood sixth on the day one leaderboard. Along with the rest of the Cougars, day two wasn't as kind as 88 took a tumble on the list to 38th. Bouncing back with a 78 on Thursday and a final round 81, Leyva finished in the top half of the field at 35th in compiling a 33-over 321.

Rounding out the five Cougars, Andrea Peraza had three consistent rounds of 87, 88, and 89 but a Thursday 96 card kept the freshman from moving up the board in completing her season in the 76th position at 72-over 360.

Barton women's Ties for 6th at nationals

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Rookie Joey Wiemer’s sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Christian Yelich homered twice for Milwaukee, with the second tying it at 3 in the sixth with a shot off Josh Taylor, who relieved starter Zack Greinke to begin the inning.

Brian Anderson opened the ninth with a single off Carlos Hernandez (0-1), who came on in relief to start the inning. Owen Miller’s one-out double sent Anderson to third. Wiemer then sent an 0-1 pitch deep enough to center to easily score Anderson — and then got a Gatorade shower from his jubilant teammates to celebrate the win.

“I’m not sitting on a pitch in that situation," Wiemer said. "Just trying to get anything I can flick out in the outfield, do my job. Not trying to do too much there.”

Devin Williams (3-0) got the victory with a perfect ninth.

Salvador Perez opened the fifth with his eighth homer to put the Royals up 3-2, chasing starter Adrian Houser.

Houser, making his second start after four rehab starts at Triple-A, allowed three runs and eight hits as the Royals left six aboard through four innings, including three in scoring position.

“He was able to get out of it,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The at-bats were good. Even when we got out in those situations, it wasn’t like just weak contact or whatever. We got into deeper counts and he made some pitches.”

Yelich tied it at 2 in the third with his fifth home run. Brice Turang led off with an infield single. And with two outs, Yelich sent a 2-0 pitch 427 feet to center.

Yelich is batting .333 (14-for-42) over his last 11 games with three homers, a double, 10 RBIs, three walks, three stolen bases and eight runs scored.

“I’m just making adjustments, trying to be consistent up there and string together really good, quality at-bats and see what happens,” Yelich said. “They haven’t all really been falling. You’ve just got to stick with it and just try and continue to put good at-bats together, good swings.”

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first when Bobby Witt Jr. doubled, advanced on an infield single and scored on M.J. Melendez’s sacrifice fly.

Joey Wiemer's sacrifice fly in 9th lifts Brewers past Royals 4-3

NEW YORK (AP) — Don Denkinger, a major league umpire for three decades whose blown call in the 1985 World Series overshadowed a career of excellence, died Friday. He was 86.

Denkinger died at Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo, Iowa, Denise Hanson, one of his three daughters, said.

Denkinger joined the American League staff in 1969. He worked four World Series over three decades in the big leagues but was remembered most for a call he didn't get right.

St. Louis had a 3-2 Series lead over Kansas City and was ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 6, three outs from the title, when pinch-hitter Jorge Orta led off with a slow bouncer to the right side. First baseman Jack Clark ranged to field the ball and flipped a sidearm toss to reliever Todd Worrell covering the bag.

Denkinger signaled safe but replays showed Worrell caught the throw on the base ahead of the runner. After Steve Balboni's single, a bunt, a passed ball and an intentional walk, pinch-hitter Dane Iorg looped a two-run single into right field for a 2-1 walk-off win that forced Game 7. The Royals won 11-0 the following night for the championship.

“Nobody wants to have the call that I did in the World Series,” Denkinger told The Associated Press in 2014. “But I did. And now it’s part of history.”

Major League Baseball did not adopt video review for most calls until 2014.

“I’m not tired of talking about it. I mean, it happened,” Denkinger said. “I just know that if the same thing happened now, they’d get it right on replay and it’d be over with.”

The day after the blown call, he relaxed by attending the first half of the NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium, then walked across the parking lot to work the plate for Game 7.

Denkinger received threatening notes in the offseason, and the FBI investigated. But he persevered and resumed a career of excellence.

Denkinger kept a framed photo of the infamous play and joined Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog, the Cardinals' manager in the 1980s, as speakers at the Saint Louis University First Pitch baseball dinner in 2015. Denkinger also spoke at the 2005 Whitey Herzog Youth Foundation dinner.

Ted Barrett, a big league umpire who retired after last season, remembered his first series working with Denkinger, at the Kingdome in Seattle.

“Richie Amaral got picked off, but he actually made a great slide and got around the tag and made it back safely, but I called him out,” Barrett said Friday, recalling a game on July 25, 1995. “So after the game, we’re looking at the videotape, and I’m like, crud, I missed it, feeling terrible. We’re walking from our dressing room through the Kingdome to the car, and he says, `Hey, kid. What’s going on?′ I say I feel terrible. I missed the call. And he looks at me with a grin, he says `Try (messing) one up in the World Series.′ I was like, whoa, respect this guy.”

Denkinger umpired in many of his era's big games. He worked the plate for World Series Game 7 in 1991, when Minnesota's Jack Morris pitched a 10-inning shutout to beat Atlanta 1-0. He also worked the plate for the 1978 Yankees-Red Sox tiebreaker game at Fenway Park and for Nolan Ryan's sixth no-hitter in 1990.

Denkinger is among seven umps to work a pair of perfect games. He was at second base for Len Baker's gem in 1981 and at first for Kenny Rogers' perfecto in 1994.

Denkinger was born in Cedar Falls on Aug. 28, 1936. He wrestled while at Wartburg College, served in the U.S. Army and started umpiring in the Alabama-Florida League in 1960. He moved up to the Northwest League the following two seasons, the Double-A Texas League from 1963-65 and the Triple-A International League from 1966-68.

He made his American League debut at third base in Kansas City's Municipal Stadium on April 8, 1969, and was behind the plate for the first time four days later at Sick's Stadium in Seattle.

Denkinger worked his first two World Series in 1974 and 1980. His final game was at Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium on June 2, 1998, and he retired after the season at age 62 because of an ailing right knee.

He is survived by his wife, the former Gayle Price, and daughters. A funeral is planned for May 19 at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.

Don Denkinger, umpire whose stellar career was overshadowed by blown call, dead at 86

MILWAUKEE (AP) — This was the kind of night Owen Miller dreamed of having when he learned he'd be coming home to play for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Miller went 3 for 4 with a homer and a double to back up Corbin Burnes' six shutout innings as the Brewers defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Friday night. Miller's homer was his first since the Brewers acquired the Wisconsin native from the Cleveland Guardians last December.

“I'll have to go back and listen to (Brewers broadcaster Bob) Uecker on the radio on that one” said Miller, who was born in the Milwaukee suburb of Mequon and played at Ozaukee High School in Fredonia, Wisconsin. “I know my grandma, she'd be proud of that one. She'd always have Uecker on when I was little.”

Miller homered in the third inning, doubled in the fifth and singled and scored in the seventh for his fifth career three-hit game. Three of those games have come against the Royals.

Milwaukee's victory, coupled with the Pittsburgh Pirates' 6-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, enabled the Brewers to regain a half-game lead in the NL Central. The Brewers have won just three of their last 11 games, but the Pirates have lost 10 of 11.

“We don't want to watch the standings this early in the year,” Burnes said. “I think if we go out and play the baseball we can, all that will take care of itself. Obviously, we haven't played our best baseball probably the last two weeks. There's a lot more in there that we can do better, really all across the board. I think it's going to come down to us playing the best baseball we can and not worrying about what the rest of the league's doing or where the standings are at.”

Burnes (4-2) settled down after some early control issues. He struck out seven and allowed only two hits while throwing a season-high 104 pitches.

“I think the fifth and sixth innings were probably my best innings as far as getting ahead and attacking the zone,” Burnes said. “I've just got to do a better job from the get-go. There's no reason why I shouldn't throw six innings. To do it with 100-plus pitches is a little ridiculous.”

Burnes' four walks were one off his career high, but the Royals failed to capitalize.

“That's what good pitchers do," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “They find a way. I'm sure he would say that's probably not his best night, best command or whatever, but he found a way to execute.”

Kansas City got just three hits all night and scored its only run on Freddy Fermin’s two-out homer in the seventh off Joel Payamps. The Royals were seeking their first three-game winning streak of the season.

The Brewers took a lead they wouldn’t relinquish by scoring an unearned run off Josh Taylor (0-1) in the first inning. Willy Adames drew a two-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Christian Yelich’s infield single.

Taylor made his second career start out of 131 appearances and lasted one inning in what was a designed bullpen game for the Royals. Max Castillo replaced Taylor and allowed two runs, three walks and six hits in 4 1/3 innings while throwing 80 pitches.

Miller extended the lead to 2-0 when he led off the third by ripping an 0-2 slider from Castillo into the left-field seats. The 404-foot drive was Miller’s first homer of the season.

Tyrone Taylor’s two-out single up the middle off Castillo in the fourth brought home Brian Anderson and made it 3-0. Yelich and Anderson added RBI singles off Josh Staumont in the seventh.

C Salvador Perez was scratched from the Royals’ starting lineup Friday due to what Quatraro described as “a little bit of blurry vision.” The Royals’ original lineup had Perez leading off as the designated hitter.

Quatraro said Perez already had received treatment from a specialist. “It’s nothing long-term or serious,” Quatraro said.
