KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs beat the New England Patriots on Sunday in spite of themselves.

It's a trick they can pull off against a three-win team, even on the road. But probably not one against a team in the postseason.

So that is where the Chiefs — that equally befuddling and beguiling Super Bowl champions — finds themselves with three games left in the regular season.

They improved to 9-5 with their 27-17 win on Sunday in Foxborough, Massachusetts, but still find themselves staring up at Miami (10-4) and Baltimore (11-3) in the AFC playoff picture with three regular-season games to go.

They also find themselves making the same mistakes that have cost them all season: penalties, dropped passes, turnovers and mental errors, and often several of them happening on a single disastrous play.

That was certainly the case for Kadarius Toney, whose offside penalty cost them so dearly the previous week against Buffalo, taking away a go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute left. For the second time this season, Toney not only dropped a pass but had it picked off, and just like Detroit in the opener the Patriots turned the turnover into points.

He wasn't the only issue Sunday, though. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor, who has been penalized six more times than any player in the NFL, was flagged again for a false start. Rashee Rice, one of their rare offensive bright spots, fumbled again but was able to get back on it. And drop-prone Skyy Moore was fortunate to have a lost fumble wiped away by a penalty.

The same culprits that have made the same mistakes all season.

“We've had great spots and we've had spots where we've struggled,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “We've just got to continue to make it a full game. I think that's the biggest thing.”

Still, the Chiefs had lost two straight and were in desperate need of a win, and they got it. And they have three winnable games to finish against the Raiders, Bengals and Chargers — three teams with backup QBs and two of them led by interim coaches.

“When you’re as close as the AFC is right now, wins are hard to get and you better enjoy each one,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “They’re very important, and so this one (against New England), no different than that because of the situation.”

The Chiefs had four sacks against the Patriots but the one by Jaylen Watson stood out. It was the latest example of the way Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has been able to supplement his pass rush by blitzing from the secondary, where their cornerbacks and safeties have produced seven sacks this season.

“We’re a pressure team,” Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay Jr. said. "From every position on the field, we got a sack. To actually capitalize on the plays being called, and to execute the way we did, there’s no weakness there on the defense.”

The Chiefs played without Isiah Pacheco for the second straight week after their leading rusher had “a cleanup” procedure on his ailing shoulder. And their ground game has gone nowhere without him. Clyde Edwards-Helaire carried 11 times for 37 yards, even though he made some big plays in the passing game, and Kansas City finished with 43 yards on 20 total carries.

Rice has become Mahomes' go-to target, even ahead of longtime and dependable tight end Travis Kelce. The rookie had a career-best nine catches for 91 yards and a touchdown, the fourth time in six games he has reached the end zone. Rice has had at least seven receptions in four straight games and could hit 1,000 yards by the end of the season.

“You know, his game just keeps going up, man,” Kelce said. "I’m proud of the way he’s been able to handle the ups and downs of the season. Right now, he’s playing great ball.”

It's hard to believe that Toney's stock could fall any more than it did following the previous week's penalty against Buffalo. But at this point, Toney is not producing nearly enough to balance out the negative plays dragging down the Kansas City offense.

Kelce had an elbow “stinger” but should be OK. Moore had to leave Sunday's game with swelling in his knee, and the Chiefs put him on injured reserve later Monday to end what had been a disappointing second season in the NFL.

2 — The number of ways Jerick McKinnon got the Chiefs into the end zone Sunday. He caught a TD pass and threw a TD pass, joining Curtis McClinton (1963) and Tyler Thigpen (2008) as the only players in club history to do that in the same game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals made official their deal with starting pitcher Michael Wacha on Monday, a $32 million, two-year pact that includes a player option for 2025 and incentives based on the number of innings he pitches.

The Royals have been among the busiest teams in the majors this offseason, bolstering their rotation in free agency by signing Wacha and Seth Lugo along with their bullpen by signing Chris Stratton and Will Smith. They also have landed power-hitting outfielder Hunter Renfroe to give their lineup a veteran presence along with some additional pop.

The deal for Wacha includes a $16 million salary next year, a $16 million option and $50,000 bonuses for pitching 105 innings each season and each additional five through 150. When it is combined with the other contracts given out, the Royals have committed well over $100 million in free agency to improve the club.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Royals traded right-hander Jonathan Heasley to the Baltimore Orioles for right-hander Cesar Espinal. Heasley had a 7.20 ERA over 12 relief appearances for Kansas City last season, while the 18-year-old Espinal was 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA for the Orioles' club in the Dominican Summer League.

The Royals are coming off a 106-loss season in manager Matt Quatraro's first season, and the first full season in which J.J. Picollo has been general manager. But in a division without a clear-cut favorite, and with promising young talents such as Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino already on the roster, the Royals saw an opportunity to go from worst to first in the AL Central.

“We feel like it's time for us to make a significant move,” Picollo acknowledged last week.

The Royals also are trying to rally public support for a new downtown ballpark to replace aging Kauffman Stadium, and putting a winning team on the field would help. They hoped to announce a location for the new stadium by the end of September, but their ongoing discussions with political leaders in multiple locations have slowed the progress on their plans.

The 32-year-old Wacha, a former first-round pick of the Cardinals, spent last season with Lugo in San Diego. He went 14-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 24 starts for the Padres, the third time he has had at least 10 wins and a 3.40-or-better ERA in his career.

Wacha has pitched in parts of 11 seasons for the Cardinals (2013-19), Mets (2020), Rays (2021), Red Sox (2022) and Padres (2023), going a combined 88-54 with a 3.96 ERA. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Ayoka Lee posted her school-record 53rd career double-double to spark 12th-ranked Kansas State to a 102-59 rout of Oral Roberts on Monday night.

Lee had her record double-double in the books by early in the second quarter, scoring 24 points and grabbing a career-high 21 rebounds, two shy of the school record, to move into third all-time. Lee hit 11 of 17 shots from the floor but was just 2 of 7 from the free-throw line. She also blocked five shots while pulling down 15 rebounds off the defensive glass.

Jalei Oglesby's jumper with 12 seconds left pulled Oral Roberts within 19-17 after one quarter. The Wildcats doubled up the Golden Eagles in the second, going on a 30-15 run through the period to take a 49-32 lead at the break.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs placed wide receiver Skyy Moore on injured reserve Monday, ending what had been a disappointing second season for the 2022 second-round draft pick.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said earlier in the day that Moore had some swelling in his knee, which caused him to play limited snaps during Sunday's 27-17 win in New England. But in the time that he was on the field, Moore once again fumbled the ball away after a catch, only to be bailed out by a defensive holding penalty that gave Kansas City the ball back.

The Chiefs, who improved to 9-5 with the win over the Patriots, were hopeful that Moore could improve upon a rookie season in which he caught 22 passes for 250 yards but began to show promise late in the season and into the playoffs.

Instead, Moore caught just 21 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown while ceding playing time to other wide receivers.

The Chiefs have struggled to get consistent production from their pass-catchers all season, although rookie Rashee Rice has emerged as a potential star. Marquez Valdes-Scantling has had crucial dropped passes and has failed to produce a return on the $11 million he is making this season, while Kadarius Toney continues to make costly mental mistakes in games.

The latest involving Toney, whose offside penalty cost the Chiefs a go-ahead TD the prior week against Buffalo, came when his dropped pass was intercepted by the Patriots on Sunday. The same thing happened to him in Week 1 against Detroit.

Reid said that Richie James, who has been excellent as a punt returner, could see more playing time at wide receiver after playing just a couple of snaps in New England. The Chiefs also get Justyn Ross off the exempt list this week; he had been there after a six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy, and he could take Moore's place on the 53-man roster.

“We’ll have to see on Ross just to where that goes,” Reid said. "I’ll get with (General Manager Brett) Veach today, and we’ll go through all of that. Richie, though, has got to play more than two snaps, so that’s my responsibility on that. I didn’t have him in on enough stuff. He’s a good football player, though.”

Bucks before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1975. He

Tuesday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

The commissioners from three of the remaining power conferences in college sports appeared together in a crowded convention center ballroom and were asked to ponder what was wrought by three tumultuous years of realignment that culminated in the destruction of a 108-year-old institution.

“Obviously, not happy about the ultimate outcome to the Pac-12, but I’m in this position to give us the best options and future possible and we took advantage of the moment.” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark explained during the session in Las Vegas.

That moment came over a span of six weeks this past summer. The Pac-12 was ripped apart and redistributed by its competitors, regardless of geography. The stunning demolition, set in motion a year earlier, was accelerated when the Pac-12 couldn’t secure a media rights deal to match its competitors.

The redrawing of the college sports map and demise of the Pac-12, a conference that claims the most NCAA championships and a legacy that includes the likes of Jackie Robinson, Bill Walton, Aaron Rodgers, Katie Ledecky, Tiger Woods and Cheryl Miller, made conference realignment The Associated Press Sports Story of the Year.

All of the moves by 2023 — and it was hard to keep count — will take effect in 2024, which will go down as one of the most transformative in the history of college athletics.

Oregon and Washington pledged to join the Big Ten, where Southern California and UCLA had already committed. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah fled for the Big 12. Stanford and California found a life line in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a league with all its football-playing members currently in the Eastern time zone.

The four new West Coast Big Ten schools will be no closer than 1,500 miles from any of their new conference rivals.

Along with Texas and Oklahoma relocating from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference, all will join their new leagues before the start of next college football season.

“These are seismic moves,” former Fox Sports executive Bob Thompson said.

The end of the Pac-12 ushered in the super conference era and laid bare the bottom line of college sports.

“I don’t know what the institutions that are involved will say was the motivation, but it was money in every case,” former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said.

Next year, the Big Ten will have 18 schools, the Big 12 and SEC 16 each and the ACC 17 football-playing members, including SMU in Dallas. The Pac-12 is likely to survive with Oregon State and Washington State rebuilding the conference, but it will no longer reside among college sports’ super wealthy.

The Power Five is now a Power Four, but within that there is a Big Two. The Big Ten and SEC now have media rights deals that will allow them to provide yearly payouts to their members of upwards of $70 million. The ACC and Big 12 are hoping to stay within $30 million per year per school of those stratospheric numbers.

This all comes as the prospect of major college football players being directly paid by schools becomes more realistic. Just two weeks ago, NCAA President Charlie Baker proposed a plan to do exactly that.

“How much of the realignment moves are to position these universities for better success in the NIL world?” Thompson asked.

The frantic culmination of this round of realignment came from late July to early September, but the first domino was tipped in the summer of 2021 when it was revealed that Texas and Oklahoma were bolting the Big 12 for the SEC. That, said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, cleared the decks for schools eager to “take advantage of free agency.”

When the best the Pac-12 could do was a partnership with Apple that had a smaller annual guarantee than those of the ACC and Big 12, it sent schools shopping for a better deal.

“I don’t know that the four members that came to the Big 12 were moving toward something as much as they were trying to ensure that they didn’t go down with the ship, relative to the Pac-12,” Bowlsby said.

Conference realignment has been a part of college sports for about as long as games have been game on campus, primarily driven by schools and leagues jockeying for prestige, better competition and more robust revenue streams.

The most recent round of realignment felt more predatory. Survival for the fittest.

“In short, I think it was unnecessary,” Bowlsby said. “I don’t I don’t think the college athletics ecosystem is better with the absence of the Pac-12.”

The top of college sports should be heading into a few years of relative peace when it comes to realignment. Each of the remaining power conferences is locked into a media rights deal through at least the 2029-30 school year.

Thompson said he believes the future of major college football could be a super league similar to what has been proposed in European soccer.

“So, let’s say it’s the top 40 brands or the top whatever brands in football only, they go off and they do the super league and everything else stays at the conference level,” Thompson said. “People may decide that maybe that regionality we had a while ago wasn’t a bad thing for all the other sports.”

A new competitive reality is also coming to college football and it could be harsh for some schools.

“I think there are some in the larger conferences that will clearly be marginalized, and the money won’t be worth it because they’ll there’ll be traditional losers on a regular basis,” Bowlsby said. “And I think there will institutions that have been traditional winners that will be turn into institutions that are playing in the middle of the pack most of the time, that’s going to be a big adjustment.”

Purdue jumps back to No. 1 in The AP Top 25 men's poll; Kansas No. 2

The Great Bend swimmers have had their hands full with Garden City at a handful of meets already this winter. Last Thursday, the Panthers headed west to Garden City for a four-team meet. The host Buffs dominated the field with 533 points, followed by Hays with 425 points, and Great Bend with 336 points. Liberal rounded out the group with 307 points.

Great Bend excelled in the 100 free. Kasey Kennedy got the win in 57.63, followed by Adam Hall in 1:02.72 for the silver. Kennedy picked up a bronze in the 200 free in 2:11.01 to miss the silver by just over a second. Andrew McQuade placed fifth in 2:34.75, and Hall finished sixth in 2:34.95.

The Panther 200 free relay place fourth in 1:58.67. That team of Hall, McQuade, Gabe Herrman, and Matthew Williams missed the bronze by just 1.4 seconds. The 400 free relay team of Hall, McQuade,&nbsp; Williams, and Joshua Sharpe finished in 4:42.58 to miss third place by 20 seconds. Garden City won by 10 seconds in 4:03.

Sharpe finished fifth in the 500 free in 8:18.30, followed by Jordan Sander in sixth in 8:20.49. AJ Thurman finished behind him in 8:30.34. Garden City took the top-two spots at 5:56 and 6:33. (AP) — Running back Jerick McKinnon threw for one touchdown and ran
for another to help Kansas City beat the New England Patriots 27-17
in front of Chiefs superfan Taylor Swift. Patrick Mahomes passed for

a two-game losing streak and maintained control of the AFC West race.
Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce, who is in a relationship with
Swift, caught five passes for 28 yards, but also had a potential
touchdown bounce off his hands. Bailey Zappe made his third straight
start in place of benched first-round draft pick Mac Jones. He
completed 23 of 31 passes for 180 yards for the Patriots. New England

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
(AP) — Lamar Jackson threw a touchdown pass and made the play of
night when he avoided a sack and threw to Isaiah Likely near the goal
line, and the Baltimore Ravens clinched a postseason berth with a
23-7 victory at Jacksonville. The Ravens won their fourth in a row
and moved a step closer to securing the No. 1 seed and home-field
advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. The Jaguars lost their third
straight — all against AFC North teams — and are now tied with
Houston and Indianapolis atop the AFC South. Self-inflicted mistakes
were a common thread in Jacksonville’s skid.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.
(AP) — James Cook had a career-best 179 yards rushing and scored
twice as Buffalo dominated on the ground, and the Bills beat Dallas
31-10, ending the Cowboys’ five-game winning streak. Josh Allen
threw for just 94 yards for the Bills, who won consecutive games for
the first time since a three-game winning streak ended on Oct. 1.
Buffalo gained ground in the AFC playoff race, moving one game ahead
of Denver and Pittsburgh. The Cowboys clinched their third playoff
berth before kickoff thanks to other results around the league. But
nothing else went right for Dallas. The Bills rushed for 266 yards

— Christian McCaffrey scored three touchdowns, Charvarius Ward had
two interceptions, including a pick-6, and the San Francisco 49ers

of 25 passes for 242 yards and tied a career high with four
touchdowns, shaking off a hard hit in the second quarter that caused
him to miss a few plays. The 49ers have won all their games during

AMES, Iowa (AP) —
Tamin Lipsey scored 19 points, Tre King added 18 points and 10
rebounds to help Iowa State beat Florida A&amp;M 96-58. Lipsey hit a
career-high five 3-pointers and King made 8 of 11 from the field.
Milan Momcilovic scored 14 points, Jackson Paveletzke 13 and Keshon
Gilbert 10 for Iowa State. Keith Lamar hit seven 3-pointers and
finished with 27 points and eight rebounds for Florida A&amp;M.
Morrell Schramm added 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
King converted a three-point play, hit a jumper in the lane and made
a layup to score Iowa State’s first seven points as the Cyclones

Madisen Skinner had 16 kills and Ella Swindle became the fourth true
freshman setter to lead her team to a national championship as Texas
defended its NCAA Volleyball title by dominating No. 1 overall seed
Nebraska 3-0. With Skinner, named the Most Outstanding Player with 34
kills in the Final Four, Texas won its fourth NCAA crown 25-22,
25-14, 25-11 by sweeping the Cornhuskers, who had lost just one set
in the tournament. The young Cornhuskers were out of sync most of the
day, with much of the credit going to the Longhorns’ service game
that produced a championship-match record 12 aces. Harper Murray had

Quarterback Kyle McCord, who started every game this season for Ohio
State, has announced he is transferring to Syracuse. McCord passed

recruit out of Philadelphia. McCord is the latest transfer addition
for new Syracuse coach Fran Brown. The former Georgia assistant coach
has also received transfer commits from former Bulldogs receivers

previously worked at Temple and Rutgers before spending two seasons
with Georgia.

Bryant Gumbel's “Real Sports” airs its final episode on HBO after
29 years this week, and an era in sports journalism ends with it. The
newsmagazine used sports as a lens to look through all manners of
social issues, and won awards for stories on concussions, camel
jockeys and labor abuses in Qatar. For its last few years of
operation, it taped episodes on the same Manhattan block that houses
the offices of CBS' “60 Minutes,” with which it shares a
sensibility. At age 75, Gumbel takes pride in never having missed a
taping and, like many athletes, he said he'd rather leave the field
too early than too late.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Running back Jerick McKinnon threw for one touchdown and ran for another, and Patrick Mahomes passed for 305 yards and two scores to help Kansas City beat the New England Patriots 27-17 on Sunday in front of Chiefs superfan Taylor Swift.

Bailey Zappe, making his third straight start in place of benched first-round draft pick Mac Jones, completed 23 of 31 passes for 180 yards for the Patriots. New England (3-11) lost for the sixth time in seven games and remains in contention for one of the top two picks in next year’s NFL draft.

In what could be the penultimate home game of coach Bill Belichick’s tenure, the six-time Super Bowl champions took a 10-7 lead before allowing 20 straight points.

Flexed out of “Monday Night Football” because of their ineptitude — an NFL first — the Patriots seemed to have third billing on the day, behind Swift and her beau’s team, which has won two of the past four NFL titles and has all of the star power New England once claimed.

On the next play, Mahomes connected with Clyde Edwards-Helaire for 48 yards to the New England 15. Two plays later, McKinnon took a direct snap and flipped it to Rashee Rice for the 4-yard touchdown pass.

For the third straight week of nominations, Lajae Jones of the 10th ranked Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named the KJCCC's Division I Basketball Player of the Week.

It was another double-double producing week six for Jones in leading Cougars to a pair of victories by averaging 10.5 points and 11 rebounds in 30.5 minutes per game.

Jones opened his week going 5-of-7 from the field finishing with 11 points and securing 12 boards in 28 minutes leading Barton to a twenty-three point home win over Northwest Kansas Technical College.

This past Saturday, Jones' third straight double-double helped Barton close out the fall portion of the schedule with a sixteen point victory at Seward County Community College. Jones' 4-of-8 shooting led to a 10 point afternoon in adding 10 rebounds and a team leading three steals in Barton's first victory at The Greenhouse since 2018.

Jones' third weekly honor is the fourth for the Cougars this season as Myles Thompson earned the week two distinction in averaging a double-double in Barton's trio of victories.

The Cougars stand through the holiday break at 6-1 in KJCCC play and 12-1 overall with its next contest slated for Wednesday, January 3rd in a 7:30 p.m. tip hosting Coffeyville Community College.

DETROIT (AP) — Jared Goff matched a career high with five touchdown passes, three to rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, and the Detroit Lions routed the Denver Broncos 42-17. The NFC North-leading Lions could clinch a playoff berth for the first time since the 2016 if other results go their way the rest of this weekend. Goff threw three TD passes in the second quarter as the Lions took a 21-0 lead at halftime. Russell Wilson and the Broncos had just 75 yards of offense in the first half. The Broncos fell to 7-7 and their chances of making the playoffs took a hit.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Tee Higgins made a savvy goal-line move to score a touchdown and force overtime and Evan McPherson made a 29-yard field goal to seal a 27-24 victory for Cincinnati over the Minnesota Vikings, keeping the Bengals’ playoff hopes alive even with star quarterback Joe Burrow out for the season. They had lost two straight and three of four games. The Bears had a shot-clock violation on the opening possession and seconds later, Walker made a 3-pointer to set the tone for the game.DETROIT (AP) — Jared Goff matched a career high with five touchdown passes, three to rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, and the Detroit Lions routed the Denver Broncos 42-17. The NFC North-leading Lions could clinch a playoff berth for the first time since the 2016 if other results go their way the rest of this weekend. Goff threw three TD passes in the second quarter as the Lions took a 21-0 lead at halftime. Russell Wilson and the Broncos had just 75 yards of offense in the first half. The Broncos fell to 7-7 and their chances of making the playoffs took a hit.CINCINNATI (AP) — Tee Higgins made a savvy goal-line move to score a touchdown and force overtime and Evan McPherson made a 29-yard field goal to seal a 27-24 victory for Cincinnati over the Minnesota Vikings, keeping the Bengals’ playoff hopes alive even with star quarterback Joe Burrow out for the season. Higgins caught a 21-yard pass from Jake Browning with under a minute remaining and pulled off an acrobatic move to stretch the ball over the goal line and tie the game. In overtime, a 44-yard catch by Tyler Boyd helped set up a chip shot from McPherson.INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Gardner Minshew threw three touchdown passes and the Indianapolis Colts rushed for 170 yards, improving their playoff prospects with a 30-13 win over the sagging Pittsburgh Steelers. Minshew was 18 of 28 for 215 yards and matched his career high for TD passes while leading a Colts offense lacking its usual complement of playmakers. The Colts have won five of six to improve to 8-6 and temporarily moved a half-game ahead of three teams for the AFC’s seventh and final playoff spot. The Steelers dropped their third straight to fall to 7-7 and into last place in the rugged AFC North.SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Behren Morton completed 27 of 43 passes for 256 yards and three first-half touchdowns, leading Texas Tech to a 34-14 victory over California in the Independence Bowl. Tahj Brooks ran for 98 yards and a score as the Red Raiders shook off a terrible start. They shut out the Golden Bears for the final three quarters to win the 47th edition of college football’s 11th-oldest bowl game. Texas Tech led 24-14 at halftime and Brooks, the nation’s fourth-leading rusher, scored the only touchdown of the second half on a 7-yard run in the third quarter. It was the third straight bowl win for the Red Raiders, who fumbled the opening kickoff. Larned placed sixth with 63.5 points.Senior Daizy Gomez followed up Thursday's big win against Dodge City with a title at 130 pounds. Ranked No. 3, she pinned all five opponents in 90 seconds or less, including three in under a minute. Hoisington senior Daijah Jones, ranked No. 6 (3-2-1A), pinned all three pool opponents, with two matches decided in 16 seconds or less. She won a 61-second match in the semifinals before losing to Gomez in the finals.Fourth-ranked Kaylea McMullen cruised to the title at 125 pounds. All three of her pool wins came in under a minute, with two going faster than 30 seconds. She pinned Eureka in the title match. Aly Feil placed fifth for the Lady Panthers. The 105-pound bracket featured a pair of the best in Kansas. Great Bend freshman Camdyn Post, ranked No. 6, pinned her first two opponents before getting pinned by second-ranked Isabela Gutierrez of Liberal in the third period. Post responded with a 14-second pin against Hoisington to secure second place. The 170-pound bracket featured an all-Great Bend final. Kirra Stevens went 4-0 in pool matches with all wins in 88 seconds or less. In the other pool, Lea Nokes also went 4-0 with four pins. Stevens needed just 24 seconds to pin Nokes for the title. Larned's Kinley Atteberry pinned Hoisington's Nevaeh Graves for third place.The 190-pound bracket also featured premiere competition. Great Bend's fourth-ranked Natalee Daniels pinned all three pool opponents in 62 seconds or fewer. She reached the finals by pinning her Plainville opponent. Unbeaten Haylee Martinez of Liberal, ranked No. 3, won a 6-4 decision against Daniels for the championship.Area wrestlers filled the semifinals at 110 pounds. Larned junior Liliana McKenna pinned her two pool opponents, pinned Hoisington freshman Jayda Bailey in the semifinals, then pinned Great Bend's Keira Leyva for the title. Leyva reached the finals with four wins by fall. Bailey defeated teammate Devin Czamek in the consolation finals.Ellinwood's Keighyn Dombroski won out at 115 pounds. The junior picked up a pair of quick pins in pool matches, won a 41-second match against Scott City in the semifinals, then defeated Russell's Mya Trevino by forfeit in the championship. Hoisington's Paige Schwartz went 3-0in pool matches with two pins before losing a 6-3 match to Trevino. Schwartz pinned her Scott City opponent for third.The absence of top-ranked Jaden Ney of Russell left the door open for other wrestlers. Hoisington's fourth-ranked Lyrica Orosco finished the day at 4-0 with four pins, three in under a minute. Great Bend's Josie Blevins finished the day at 2-2 with a pair of pins for third place.Hoisington's sixth-ranked Haylee Holinde won the 235-pound bracket. She was cruising with four-straight pins before downing Eureka 3-0 in the title match.Larned's Cara Herbert was crusing with four pins in pool matches before losing by fall to Scott City in the championship match at 120 pounds. Hoisington's Kassie Linsner placed fourth in the bracket. Great Bend's Braelyn Turner lost an opening match the champion from Scott City but finished the day at 3-2 with three pins, including two in 24 seconds or less, for fifth place.Great Bend freshman Trinity Aumiller finished fourth at 100 pounds. The freshman went 2-1 in pool matches with a pin, a forfeit, and a loss by fall. She was pinned by the winner from Liberal in semifinal action, then lost by fall to Plainville in the consolation finals.Sixth-ranked Ella Normandin of Plainville won the 140-pound bracket. Great Bend's Shatarah Newton placed third. Great Bend's Marissa Esparza finished fourth at 155 pounds. Hoisington's Claire Birzer led area wrestlers at 135 pounds with a fifth-place finish.
