press release - The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors is
excited to announce the addition of a new East vs. West senior
all-star wrestling event in conjunction with the Kansas Wrestling
Coaches Association.

The KWCA Kansas
Shrine Duals is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 17th, 2024
at Fugate Gymnasium on the campus of Newman University in Wichita,
Kansas. The event will feature around 60 of the state’s top
wrestlers, both girls and boys, competing in an East vs. West team
dual format. All net proceeds from the KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals will
benefit Shriners Children’s, previously known as Shriners Hospitals
for Children.

“We’re thrilled
for this opportunity to partner with the KWCA to showcase some of the
best athletes in Kansas and increase the impact our organization can
have for Shriners Children’s,” said Brice Kesler of the Kansas
Shrine Bowl. “The opportunity to share the reasons behind our cause
with the outstanding wrestling community throughout Kansas is going
to be a great benefit for everyone involved.”

The KWCA Kansas
Shrine Duals will continue the traditions of East vs. West all-star
competition that has led to 50 years of success with the Kansas
Shrine Bowl, generating more than $3.8M in donations to
ShrinersChildren’s. The partnership with the KWCA will help bring a
new philanthropic aspect to the KWCA’s mission of promoting and
recognizing outstanding contributions and accomplishments in
wrestling throughout the state of Kansas. The athletes who are
selected to participate in the KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals will have the

opportunity, through
fundraising initiatives and competition, to make a lasting impact on
the lives of children while displaying their talents on a premier
all-star stage.

“The KWCA is
excited to partner with the Shriners to bring back the Senior
All-Star Classic,” said Nathan Broeckelman, KWCA President. “This
event will be a great showcase for our senior athletes across the
state for one last go representing their respective high schools.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid was still baffled Monday by an offside penalty called on his offense that wiped out a go-ahead, 49-yard touchdown pass against the Buffalo Bills, taking the officiating crew from Sunday's game to task for throwing a flag rather than issuing a customary warning in that situation.

The play came with just over a minute left and the Chiefs trailing 20-17. Patrick Mahomes threw over the middle to Travis Kelce, who was about to get tackled when he lateraled to Kadarius Toney, who ran untouched the rest of the way for the score.

The Chiefs began to celebrate the touchdown, only to see that an official had thrown a flag on Toney for lining up offside.

“There are no excuses on this thing. That's not what I'm saying,” Reid said. "I've always had a good working relationship with these guys, and that's the important part. They know when they tell me something with a guy, I'm going to address the guy — like, right now — and make sure it gets changed. When you're talking about inches, those happen in the game.”

In fact, there were numerous instances throughout Sunday's game in which players on both teams — and both sides of the ball — were lined up in the neutral zone. Bills pass rusher Von Miller was offside more than once, and more egregiously than Toney, who may have been at most 3 inches beyond the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.

Reid acknowledged during a Zoom call with reporters Monday that Toney was in the neutral zone. But in those situations, officials will usually give him a warning about the player, then throw a flag if there is another infraction.

“It's a working relationship. That part is so important in this thing,” Reid said. “You can see it on both sides, whether it's the defense lining up in the neutral zone at times. Just give the coach a heads-up, and in our case, we tell them. And then if they get called, listen, you've been warned. That's how it worked over the years.”

Referee Carl Cheffers acknowledged that offensive offside is not something officials “want to be overly technical on,” but added that “when in his alignment he’s lined up over the ball, that’s something that we are going to call as offensive offside.”

It doesn’t matter whether that happens on the first play of the game or a big play in an important moment.

“If they looked for alignment advice, certainly we are going to give it to them. But ultimately, they are responsible for wherever they line up,” Cheffers told a pool reporter. “And certainly, no warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offside where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball. .... This particular one was beyond a warning.”

It's not the first time that a player being offside has cost the Chiefs in a crucial moment.

Five seasons ago, during the AFC championship game against New England, the Chiefs thought they had clinched their spot in the Super Bowl when they were leading 28-24 and Charvarius Ward picked off Tom Brady with a couple of minutes to go. But pass rusher Dee Ford was offside on the play, giving the Patriots another chance, and they scored a go-ahead touchdown — the Chiefs would kick a field goal to force overtime, but Brady and Co. scored a TD on the first possession to win the game.

It's also not the first time the Chiefs were left to rue the officials.

In fact, one week earlier, they were driving for a potential tying touchdown in Green Bay when Mahomes threw a deep pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Packers defensive back Carrington Valentine ran right through him but no flag was thrown for pass interference, and the Chiefs went on to lose the game 27-19.

“Let us play, man. Let us play the game,” Mahomes said Sunday night. “That's why like, last week, I didn't say anything because that's just letting us play. Let us go out there and win the game. I've said I'd rather them let us play and go out there and see who wins — I mean, you want that as a competitor. You practice all week to go out there and try to win."

Mahomes also was frustrated that the penalty seemed to be arbitrarily enforced in such a decisive moment.

play from their wide receivers this season. The group dragged them
down again on Sunday. Kadarius Toney dropped an easy early pass, then
was called for offside in the closing minutes, wiping out what would
have been a go-ahead TD in a 20-17 loss to Buffalo. Marquez
Valdes-Scantling was whistled for a penalty and Rashee Rice, one of
the few bright spots for Kansas City this season, lost a fumble. The
result was a fourth loss in six games, and one that left Kansas City
at 8-5 and clinging to a one-game lead over Denver in the AFC West.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.
(AP) — Rookie Will Levis threw for a career-high 327 yards and
directed two touchdown drives in the final 4 1/2 minutes, and the
Tennessee Titans rallied to stun Miami 28-27, knocking the Dolphins
out of the top spot in the AFC. The Titans held Tua Tagovailoa and
Miami’s explosive offense in check for most of the game but still
fell behind by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, thanks to
critical mistakes that gave short fields to the Dolphins. Raheem
Mostert ran for TDs of 3 yards and 5 yards to put Miami ahead 27-13.
But Levis threw a TD pass to DeAndre Hopkins and then set up a 3-yard
run by Derrick Henry for the go-ahead score.

EAST RUTHERFORD,
N.J. (AP) — Tommy DeVito threw a 32-yard pass to Wan’Dale
Robinson to set up Randy Bullock’s 37-yard field goal as time
expired, and the New York Giants beat Green Bay 24-22 to hand the
Packers their first December loss since Matt LaFleur took over as
coach in 2019. The Giants went 57 yards in eight plays after Jordan
Love threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Malik Heath with 1:33 to play.
Green Bay then tried a 2-point conversion but Jayden Reed was stopped
by linebacker Bobby Okereke. The go-ahead drive was set up by a
Saquon Barkley fumble. DeVito rushed for 71 yards in the third
straight win for the Giants.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.
(AP) — Tyreek Hill sat out a big portion of Miami’s 28-27 loss to
the Tennessee Titans with an ankle injury after he landed awkwardly
while being tackled in the first quarter. The star Dolphins receiver
returned to the game late in the third quarter as fans chanted “MVP!”
and caught a 21-yard pass from Tua Tagovailoa as the quarter ended.
Hill got hurt when he was tackled on a catch that went for a 6-yard
loss. He went down briefly and grabbed at his left leg. He began
limping off the field, then ran off. Hill stood on the sideline with
his helmet in his hand as the second quarter started.

NEW YORK (AP) —
Shohei Ohtani will receive just $20 million of his $700 million
contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers over the next 10 years, with
$680 million payable from 2034-43 in an unusual structure that gives
the team greater payroll flexibility in coming seasons. Ohtani’s
record-setting deal, agreed to Saturday, calls for annual salaries of
$70 million, according to details obtained by The Associated Press.
Of each year’s salary, $68 million is deferred with no interest,
payable in equal installments each July 1 from 2034-43. For purposes
of baseball's luxury tax, the contract is valued as a yearly addition
to the Dodgers' payroll of about $46 million.

Arizona has solidified its place atop the AP Top 25 men’s college
basketball poll, setting up ashowdown this weekend against Purdue,
the former No. 1 team in the nation. The Wildcats were followed by
Kansas and the Boilermakers, who jumped Houston to third. The Cougars
are fourth, while UConn rounded out the five. Virginia returned to
the poll at No. 22 while Northwestern made its season debut at No.
25. Texas A&amp;M and San Diego State dropped out this week.

Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels from LSU was one of seven
players in either their fifth or sixth season of college football
selected to The Associated Press All-America team. Daniels, a
fifth-year quarterback, won the Heisman and AP player of the year
honors after accounting for 50 touchdowns and nearly 5,000 yards of
offense this season. He was joined in the backfield by Missouri’s
Cody Schrader, a sixth-year running back who leads the nation at
124.9 rushing yards per game. Sixth-year linebacker Payton Wilson
from North Carolina State led the first-team defense.

FORT WORTH, Texas
(AP) — Former Boise State head coach Andy Avalos has been named
TCU’s new defensive coordinator. Horned Frogs head coach Sonny
Dykes announced the hiring of Avalos on Monday, a day after the
decision was made to not bring Joe Gillespie back for a third season
running the TCU defense. Avalos was 10 games into his third season as
Boise State’s head coach when he was fired in mid-November with a
22-14 overall record. He was a former Broncos player and assistant
coach who was Oregon’s defensive coordinator before that.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)
— Texas Tech senior running back Tahj Brooks plans to use his final
season of eligibility and return to play again with the Red Raiders
in 2024. He revealed his decision in a social media post. The
first-team AP All-Big 12 pick is fourth nationally and second in the
Big 12 with 1,443 yards rushing. He has 2,957 yards rushing and 27
touchdowns over 44 games in his career at Texas Tech. It began as a
freshman during the pandemic-impacted 2020 season that didn’t count
against the eligibility of any players. Coach Joey McGuires says it's
exciting for the Red Raiders.

experts say donor-fueled collectives that raise money and funnel it
to college athletes through name, image and likeness opportunities
probably won’t go away entirely if NCAA president Charlie Baker’s
proposals for paying athletes become reality. Baker proposes Division
I schools be allowed to enter into NIL deals directly with their
athletes. Collectives that technically operate independently from the
schools they serve seek donations from boosters and arrange
opportunities for athletes to be paid for activities such as public
appearances. NIL experts say the collectives could be absorbed into
athletic departments to provide some of the same services.

experts say donor-fueled collectives that raise money and funnel it
to college athletes through name, image and likeness opportunities
probably won’t go away entirely if NCAA president Charlie Baker’s

athletes. Collectives that technically operate independently from the
schools they serve seek donations from boosters and arrange
opportunities for athletes to be paid for activities such as public
appearances. NIL experts say the collectives could be absorbed into

Barton Men drop to No. 10 in NJCAA poll despite two wins last week

Nathan Agudzi-Addo's runner-up finish led the Barton Community College wrestling team on Sunday as the Cougars' hosted the Cougar Open held at the Great Bend High School PAC center.

Battling amongst 2nd ranked Pratt Community College, 11th ranked Labette Community College and 18th ranked Northeastern Junior College, Barton placed nine of their 10 participants while concluding the day with an 11-21 record.

Agudzi-Addo needed just two wins on the mat to capture the runner-up finish in the 285 division round robin, opening his day with a 2:29 fall over Pratt's Carter Atteberry. Suffering a 12-0 major decision and 5:47 fall in his next two bouts, the freshman secured his second-place finish with a quick 27-second fall over Pratt's Luke Young.

Dropping his opening two matches in the 133 division, Eastin Redetzke recovered in a resilient way settling for a fourth place finish and 2-2 day on the mat. The freshman rattled off an 11-8 decision over Labette's Cruz Lopez before capping his afternoon with an early third period 6:04 fall over Pratt's Samuel Dickey.

A pair of Cougars battled in the 157 division with Deryk Yott going 2-2 on the day including a victory over fellow teammate Ethan Boles in the fifth-place bout. Yott started his day with a quick 31-second mat flattener over Brennon Gann of Pratt after receiving an opening round bye. Dropping a pair of major decisions setting up an all Barton bout for fifth place, Yott narrowly squeezed out a 6-2 decision over teammate Boles.

Boles much like Yott opened his day with a bye while winning his first tilt with a 15-8 decision over Labette's Roman Coldwell before concluding the day on the wrong side of his final two matches.

Cohen Suchy in the 149 division would join teammates Agudzi-Addo, Redetzke and Yott with two victories on the day both beneficial of medical forfeits to finish with a 2-2 record.

Competing in just a three participant round robin in the 184 division, Edgar Duarte Quiroz settled for a third place conclusion dropping both matches.

Barton's other victories came from Kayden Blake and Stephan Baldwin. Blake settled for a eighth placing going 1-1 afternoon in the 149-division as an injury sustained ultimately ended the freshman's day while Baldwin finished his day in fifth placing and 1-2 mark in the 141 division.

Travis Kelce and Kadarius Toney had combined to make the play of the season to give the Kansas City Chiefs a late lead when the celebration quickly turned to silence.

An offside penalty on Toney negated the score.

Anytime there’s a big play in an NFL game, announcers are quick to point out whether a yellow flag has been thrown. Fans can’t get too excited until they hear on television or see in person that there’s no penalty on the play. Players often hesitate to celebrate.

The quality of officiating in the NFL is inconsistent. But that’s nothing new. It’s been that way for decades. Even with instant replay, plenty of calls are missed.

It seems every week there’s at least one blown call or non-call in an important spot that helps change the outcome of a game.

Fans whine. Players and coaches complain. The league sometimes admits mistakes and admonishes referees. Then, it happens again the following week and the week after that.

Overall, penalties are up this year but not by much. Entering Sunday night’s Eagles-Cowboys game, an average of 14.4 penalty flags were thrown per game. It was 13.1 last season.

The NFC East prime-time showdown started out like a flagfest with a national television audience watching. Officials threw eight flags in the first quarter and 17 total penalties were accepted in Dallas’ 33-13 victory over Philadelphia.

In Kansas City, the game-changing call wasn’t popular but it was accurate. Regardless, officiating is dominating headlines instead of the players' performance on the field.

With the Chiefs trailing the Buffalo Bills 20-17 and under two minutes left, Kelce caught a pass over the middle from Patrick Mahomes and then threw the ball backward across the field to Toney, who ran the final 25 yards to finish off the 49-yard backyard touchdown.

However, Toney had clearly lined up offside. It’s a call officials rarely made before this season. There have been 13 offensive offside penalties in 2023, including a few against Philadelphia on the “tush push” play. There were only seven total in the previous three seasons combined.

The Chiefs hadn’t noticed that referees are calling offensive offside more frequently.

Mahomes was fuming on the sideline, screaming at officials and had to be held back. Even coach Andy Reid uncharacteristically pointed out his displeasure with the call unprovoked after the game.

“I never use any of this as excuses, but normally I get a warning before something like that happens in a big game,” Reid said. ”(It’s) a bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place. ... Normally, yeah, if it’s even close you get a warning. The head coach gets a warning, I mean that normally — I don’t know, I didn’t have a protractor out there. But it’s a bit embarrassing.”

Referee Carl Cheffers said officials will give coaches alignment advice if they’re asked.

“But ultimately, they are responsible for wherever they line up,” Cheffers told a pool reporter. “And, certainly, no warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball. So, we would give them some sort of a warning if it was anywhere close, but this particular one is beyond a warning.”

Cheffers wasn’t sure if any warnings for offside were issued during the game but it didn’t matter in this case.

“If it’s egregious enough, it would be beyond a warning,” he said. “So really regardless of whether or not he was warned at other times during the day, if it was an egregious alignment to where he was over the ball — whether he had warnings or not — it would still be a foul.”

Last week, referees missed an obvious pass interference by the Packers against Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling near the 5-yard line in the final minute of Green Bay’s 27-19 win.

“I know as fans you want to see the guys on the field decide the game and that’s why last week I didn’t say anything about the flag that didn’t get called on Marquez,” Mahomes said. “I mean, they’re human, they make mistakes but it’s every week we’re talking about something and all I can do is go out there and give everything I have. ... It’s just tough to swallow.”

Officiating again stole spotlight even though call against Chiefs was correct

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Left-handed reliever Will Smith, who has won World Series rings the past three seasons with three different organizations, has agreed to a $5 million contract with the Royals, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The 34-year-old Smith can also make a certain amount of performance bonuses, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal for the 2024 season was pending a physical.

Smith began his big league career as a starter in Kansas City, then transition to the bullpen, where he has had the majority of his success. He has pitched for five other clubs, going to the All-Star Game with the Giants in 2019 and then winning the World Series in 2021 with the Braves, the following year with the Astros and this past season with the Rangers.

Smith allowed four runs in five appearances for Texas this past postseason, including two in the World Series against Arizona.

The Royals had one of the worst pitching staffs in the majors last season, and their bullpen was particularly awful, compiling a 5.23 ERA that was better than only one other team. The problems with relievers was exacerbated when the Royals traded Aroldis Chapman and Scott Barlow, their two best high-leverage pitchers, prior to the deadline.

Royals agree with reliever Will Smith on $5 million deal for 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sean McDermott thought for a moment that a difficult week for himself and the Buffalo Bills would end with one last gut punch, an audacious touchdown pass by the Kansas City Chiefs with just over a minute left to steal a win Sunday.

Then the Bills' coach saw the yellow flag on the field.

The pass from Patrick Mahomes to Travis Kelce, which was then lateraled across the field to Kadarius Toney, for the 49-yard score was called back by an offside penalty on none other than Toney himself.

And when the Bills proceeded to hold the Chiefs on downs, they escaped from Arrowhead Stadium with a heart-stopping and head-scratching 20-17 victory.

“As the play unfolded," McDermott said, "Kelce got wide open. The play after he caught the ball, I've never seen a play like that in the NFL. But I saw the referees signaling that direction. I didn't know if it was a pick or what. It turned out to be offside.”

Rarely is offside called on an offensive player. But replays showed that Toney's foot was clearly across the line of scrimmage.

That didn't make the call sit any better with Mahomes, who chased after three different officials for an explanation. Or with Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who was still incensed after walking out of the locker room afterward.

“It’s a bit embarrassing for the National Football League for that to take place,” Reid said.

It was the second straight week the Chiefs (8-5) were dealing with questionable officiating. Last week in Green Bay, they were left wondering why pass interference was not called on a pass intended for Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the closing minutes of that game.

“Loss for words, man,” Mahomes said. "To end another game and we’re talking about referees, it’s bad for the NFL.”

It was good for the Bills (7-6), though, and they sure needed something positive to happen.

Their week began with questions swirling around pass rusher Von Miller, who turned himself into police during their bye and is facing a charge of third-degree felony assault of a pregnant woman. And the week ended with criticism aimed at McDermott, who in 2019 had used the hijackers from Sept. 11, 2001, in a team meeting to stress the importance of communication, and was left apologizing again — just as he did after realizing how his mistake four years ago.

“Just so thankful. I'm grateful for so many things,” McDermott said. “So many people that reached out. Andy Reid, many of their staff after the game. I know quite a few of the coaches on their staff. They're a class act. I appreciate that.”

The Bills' Josh Allen threw for 233 yards with touchdowns running and throwing, though he also threw an interception for the ninth consecutive game. James Cook had 58 yards rushing and caught five passes for 83 yards and a score.

The Bills had been 2-6 in games decided by six points or fewer, and they had lost a lead in the final two minutes in three losses.

“It wasn't the prettiest of wins. We all know that,” Allen said. “But the defense played fantastic.”

Mahomes finished with 271 yards passing and a touchdown with an interception, and Rashee Rice had seven catches for 72 yards and the score. But it wasn't enough to keep the Chiefs from losing for the fourth time in six games.

“It's a gut check,” Chiefs guard Trey Smith said. “You got to dig down deep. We still have games left to play.”

The Chiefs continued a recent track record of lousy starts on Sunday. Mahomes was intercepted by A.J. Epenesa on their first series, they punted on each of their next three, and it wasn't until the closing minutes of the first half that Kansas City was able to sustain a drive that ended with Jerick McKinnon's touchdown run.

By that point, the Bills had already reached the end zone twice.

The first touchdown came when Cook was unchecked coming out of the backfield, caught a flick from Allen and breezed 25 yards for the score. The second came at the end of a 73-yard drive, when Allen kept the ball over the right side and was stood up at the Kansas City 4, only for the entire Bills offense to gather behind him and shove into the end zone.

If the Eagles have the “tush push,” the Bills offered their “team trample.”

Buffalo added a field goal out of halftime, but momentum quickly tilted Kansas City's way. Mahomes led a nine-play, 75-yard march that ended with Rice's touchdown catch, then their defense forced back-to-back punts, before another drive ended with Butker's tying field goal with 11 1/2 minutes to go.

The Bills had one last scoring drive in them, which ended with Tyler Bass' go-ahead field goal with 1:54 left in the game.

The Chiefs thought they did, too, until they saw a penalty flag on the field.

“I’ve played seven years in the National Football League and never had offensive offside called,” Mahomes said, still seething in his postgame news conference. "You want until a minute left to make a call like that?”

Buffalo lost Epenesa in the first quarter, shortly after he had batted a pass into the air and picked it off. ... FS Micah Hyde left late in the first half with a stinger. He was replaced by Taylor Rapp in the second half.

Kansas City RB Isiah Pacheco (shoulder), LT Donovan Smith (neck) and LB Drue Tranquill (concussion) were inactive.

Kansas City visits New England next Sunday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had 13 points and 16 rebounds, Kevin McCullar Jr. and KJ Adams had 17 points each and No. 2 Kansas beat rival Missouri 73-64. The Jayhawks closed out the first half on a 14-0 run started by a Elmarko Jackson’s 3-pointer to turn a 2-point deficit into a 41-29 halftime lead. McCullar Jr. had 14 points and six rebounds in the first half. Sean East II led Missouri with 21 points and Nick Honor scored 17, but the Tigers were without one of their guards, Caleb Grill, who injured his non-shooting wrist last Sunday and is expected to miss 5-7 weeks.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Cam Carter scored 21 points, 19 in the first half, and Arthur Kaluma added a double-double, leading Kansas State to a 75-60 victory over LSU. The Tigers outshot Kansas State 59%-52% in the first half but trailed 42-34 at the break. An 8-0 run by the Wildcats pushed the lead to 56-39 near the 14-minute mark of the second half. LSU fought back and an 11-0 run got the Tigers within three points near the 10-minute mark. At that point, the teams that shot better than 50% in the first half both went ice cold. In the next eight minutes, K-State made three baskets and LSU one, leaving the Wildcats with a 67-57 lead with two minutes to go.

(AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs will be without running back Isiah Pacheco and left tackle Donovan Smith on offense and safety Bryan Cook and linebacker Drue Tranquill on defense when they play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Daniels is the first Heisman winner to be part of a team team that failed to play for a conference championship since 2016, when Lamar Jackson won for a Louisville team that also went 9-3. Daniels is also LSU’s third winner overall. Daniels, who transferred from Arizona State in 2022, is the fifth quarterback in the last seven seasons to win the Heisman after transferring. Daniels received 2,029 points. Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. was the runner-up with 1,701 points and Oregon’s Bo Nix was third.FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Army opened a 17-3 lead and held on with a goal-line stand in the final seconds to beat Navy 17-11 in the 124th matchup of the nation's oldest service academies. Ohtani’s total was 64% higher than baseball’s previous record, a $426.5 million, 12-year deal for Angels outfielder Mike Trout that began in 2019.
