LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;— The Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team will get a chance to bond before the season starts when it will play three exhibition games in Puerto Rico from August 1-8.

The Jayhawks will play in the capital city of San Juan and will play an exhibition game on August 3, 5 and 7. Anthony Walton, proprietor of Houston-based event organizer Walton Sports &amp; Entertainment confirmed with the Lawrence Journal-World on Wednesday.

The opponents for KU have not yet been determined, but Walton said the Jayhawks will get the best Puerto Rico has to offer.

"So we're just picking and choosing which ones would be the best competition for Kansas," Walton said.

Kansas will have four incoming transfers and four freshman on the 2023-24 roster. The guys are set to report to Lawrence in July, before the team embarks on it's trip at the end of the month.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;— Kansas State basketball player Nae'Qwan Tomlin has dropped out of the NBA Draft process and will return to play for the Wildcats next season.

The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds last season for Jerome Tang.

The Harlem, New York native transferred to K-State after going from Monroe Community College to Chipola (Fla.) College. He announced in an interview with Stadium.

Tomlin had until today to remove his name from draft consideration and return to college with eligibility.&nbsp;

Tomlin forgoes NBA Draft, will return to K-State

The 6th ranked Barton Community College baseball team secured two spots on the Region VI/Plains District All-Tournament team with first baseman&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/howse_dryden_5xbx" target="_blank">Dryden Howse</a>&nbsp;and utility&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/robertson_quinton_q03n" target="_blank">Quinton Robertson</a>, earning honors for their tournament performances.

Howse went 6-for-16 from the plate supporting a .375 batting average in four games and legged out four extra base hits for the tournament. The sophomore paced the Cougars with two home runs and runs produced driving in five of Barton's 28 runs scored.

Robertson recorded a team best average of .571 finishing 8-for-14 from the dish, scoring six runs and driving in three. The switch hitter, manufactured a team best 1.071 slugging percentage fabricating five extra base hits behind a home run and four doubles.

The Cougars concluded the 2023 campaign as the Jayhawk West Champions posting the program's best single season record of 51-10 and were one of four teams left before bowing out to Kansas City Kanas Community College 8-2 in the Region VI/Plains District Tournament.

Tuesday Sports Day (WATCH)

The Barton Community College track and field program picked up a trio of post-season awards in addition to, 48 All-America awards distributed by the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the outdoor season.

Headlining the honors was freshman&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2022-23/bios/young_christopher_utlf" target="_blank">Christopher Young</a>&nbsp;in being named not only the Central Region, but the National Men's Field Athlete of the Year. Joining Young on the Central Region awards list were David Schenek being named Men's Coach of the Year with Emmanuel Dixon being named the Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.

Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches prior to the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track &amp; Field Championships held May 18-20 in Hobbs, New Mexico. Only those individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.

Young went into the national meet ranked No. 1 in the javelin, No. 2 in the shot put, No. 3 in the discus, and No. 5 in the hammer. At the Region VI Championships, Young won the Javelin while finishing runner-up in the shot put, adding third placings in each of the discus and hammer to earn High Point Athlete of the Meet honors after contributing 30 points towards the Cougars' 24th Region Outdoor title.

On the national stage, Young contributed 32 points towards Barton's 3rd place finish at the 2023 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track &amp; Field Championships including national titles in the shot put (18.63m, 61-01.50) and javelin (63.96m, 209-10). Posting personal best efforts in three of his four events, Young also came away with a pair of third places in the discus (59.68m, 195-10) and hammer (55.55m, 183-4).

During the season Young made impacts on the storied Barton record books, ranking 3rd in the javelin, 3rd in the discus, and 3rd in the shot put while his best hammer throw of his initial collegiate season was just nineteen inches short of entering the Cougars' top ten all-time best marks.

In NJCAA history, Young ranks No. 9 all-time in the shot, No. 10 in the discus, and No. 11 on the modern day javelin list.

For Schenek, the men's head coach honor follows an indoor season in being named the women's head coach region award winner and is his 17th USTFCCCA award since 2015. Schenek's men's team most recently captured the program's 24th Region VI Outdoor title before again leading the region with a 4th place national ranking.

The Cougars clinched the Region VI crown with an impressive 27 national qualifiers, including a national leader in the javelin event.

On the national stage the Cougars finished 3rd overall behind 15 scoring performances and 15 personal and/or season bests with five impacts on the storied Barton all-time top ten lists.

Now into his second year as assistant coach, Dixon has his second straight women's outdoor regional honor.

Dixon's athletes contributed 67 of the 183.5 points to the Cougars' 32nd Region VI outdoor title. During the meet Dixon's athletes earned championships in the 100m and the 4x100m relay contributing to eighteen Top-3 placings among their twenty-nine scoring performances with two making impacts on the program record book.

Having 13 of Barton's national qualifiers, most recently Dixon's athletes helped the Cougars to a 3rd place national finish including his 4x100m relay team clocking the program's 5th fastest ever time to capture the national title.

In other coaching awards given out by USTFCCCA, former Barton coach Keith Blackwill, now into his 18th year leading the New Mexico Junior College program, was named the West Region's Women's Head Coach of the Year followed by both the National men's and women's coach of the year as his T-Birds captured both national titles.

Barton's men placed 3rd at the National Championships, finishing among the top three for the sixth straight year at the national meet as the women also placed 3rd marking the sixth straight season of placing in the top five.

The Cougars compiled 48 All-America awards by virtue of finishing among the top-8 in an event, including as a member of a relay team, at the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Outdoor Track &amp; Field Championships.

Barton's Young named National Field Athlete of Year

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Miles Mikolas pitched eight shutout innings, Nolan Arenado hit an RBI double and Nolan Gorman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Tuesday night to split the two-game set between the I-70 rivals.

Mikolas (4-1) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed three hits in working a season-high eight innings. The strikeout total matched the 34-year-old right-hander's effort against Milwaukee in 2019.

“It's one of the best feelings in sports, to show up when your team needs you,” Mikolas said. “Every game, there's someone who you kind of got to lean on. If you get to be that guy, it makes you feel good.”

Mikolas threw 102 pitches. He said he did not lobby to go out for the ninth inning.

“I got a little blister on my finger from a slider I threw there near the end,” Mikolas said. “It's not going to be a problem, but you don't want to force those things.”

St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was impressed with Mikolas' showing.

“We needed him to go. It was a phenominal start,” Marmol said. “We knew we needed this game.”

The Cardinals needed a defensive gem in the fourth inning to keep the game scoreless. With two outs and MJ Melendez on second, Michael Massey singled to right. Brendan Donovan threw a strike to the plate and Willson Contreras applied the tag to Melendez.

“Two outs, Massey squared that ball up and it took a good one hop to the right fielder,” Kansas City manager Matt Quataro said. “We got to take a chance to score there every time. They made a good throw and a good tag. MJ did a good job to try and evade it. The way the game was going, you could tell it wasn't going to be a high-scoring game."

Gionvanny Gallegos replaced Mikolas in the ninth and gave up a double and single to start the inning. Vinnie Pasquantino scored on a fielder's choice by Bobby Witt Jr., cutting the deficit to a run. Gallegos went on to retire the next two hitters and record his seventh save.

The Cardinals got a run in the sixth with two outs against Carlos Hernández (0-2). Paul Goldschmidt reached first on an infield single. Arenado hit a run-scoring double to left-center. Arenado has a team-high 18 RBIs in interleague play this season.

“We didn't score many runs, but Mikolas didn't give up any so it's a good win,” Goldschmidt said.

St. Louis extended its lead to 2-0 in the eighth Gorman's sac fly off Aroldis Chapman, scoring Tommy Edman.

Zack Greinke started for the Royals but didn't figure in the decision. The 39-year-old right-hander pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with six strikeouts. He ranks first in starts (526) and innings pitched (3,309 1/3), second in wins (224) and third in strikeouts (2,929) among active pitchers.

“He's a really talented guy,” Mikolas said. “Anytime you go up against a guy like that, you want to do good. It makes you want to impress. I watched him on TV.”

After off days Wednesday and Thursday, the Cardinals return Friday, continuing a stretch of 13 of 15 games on the road between May 22-June 7.

Tommy Edman made his first career start and third overall appearance in center field in the regular season, previously appearing as a defensive replacement on July 12, 2019 verus Arizona (one inning) and May 21, 2022 at Pittsburgh (five innings). The 28-year-old Edman also appeared in center in Game 4 of the NLCS at Washington (one inning). This season, the former Gold Glove second baseman has appeared at shortstop (27 games), second base (21 games), and right field (seven games).

With a win, the Cardinals (15-13) achieved a winning month of May for the 16th time since 2000.

“We were in a deep, dark place earlier in the month, a team meeting kind of place,” Mikolas said. “We had to assess things. We've definitely turned it around. I think our best ball is still to come.”

Royals: OF Kyle Isbel (left hamstring strain) still undergoing a rehab process after getting hurt running out a bunt earlier this month against Baltimore. He is doing more baseball activity, but a rehab assignment is not in the immediate future.

Cardinals: OF Lars Nootbar (back spasms) is getting treatment and listed as day to day. He left Monday’s game in third inning under his own power while walking with trainers. … RHP Jake Woodford (right shoulder inflammation) began an injury rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday night, starting for the Redbirds at the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Royals' affiliate. Woodford has missed the last 24 games.

Royals: The club has off Wednesday and Thursday before before hosting Colorado on Friday. No starter for either club has been named.

Mikolas shines in Cardinals victory over Royals

It was a successful weekend to the start of Great Bend Bombers Baseball 16U season. This group of boys just got done playing at the KSHSAA state tournament Thursday, May 25. They took Friday off and enjoyed the success they had during the high school season. However, one day off was all they needed to get back on the diamond and compete in the 18U Big Fire Oklahoma City Memorial Classic. 

Coach Chris Umphres stated, “We had this tournament on our schedule early knowing that we would be able to cancel if the boys made it to spring state baseball. However, when the Panthers won regionals, I asked the boys and parents what they wanted to do and the majority wanted to get the Bombers season going right away.” 

Bombers Baseball 16U is comprised of sophomores and younger from Great Bend and a player from Hoisington and Ellinwood. This first tournament in OKC over the weekend had other 16U, 17U and 18U teams participating. 

Bombers Baseball 16U went 4-1-1 on the weekend and beating the two teams that they lost too and tied in pool play later on in bracket play. 

“These young players play with a chip on their shoulder and know that they can compete with anyone. They have been told over the last year or two that they weren’t ready to play at a high level of baseball despite all the success that they have had by playing Bombers Baseball over the years. I have confidence in them and want to put them in situations to learn the game and get better throughout their careers,” Umphres said. 

Bombers Baseball 16U pitched 10 different players over the course of six games in two days. The team outscored opponents 45-34, stole 15 bases and threw out three runners. 

The best team Bombers played was in the semi-final game against Tulsa Rawlings Tigers. Tigers pitcher was a big lefty throwing 88-90 MPH and had a great breaking ball. The Bombers scored 4 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks against this pitcher. Bombers were able to knock him out of the game after throwing 72 pitches in just two innings. Tigers brought in another good lefty arm for the remainder of the game. The two lefty pitchers struck out Bombers hitters 12 times. 

Koehn Ribordy pitched a great game and only allowed 4 earned runs and striking out 6. However, Bombers were able to steal 7 bases over the course of the game. Including Daxton Minton stealing home on the catchers throw back to the pitcher to take the lead and eventually winning 7-6. 

Umphres stated, “The Tigers coach told me that a young group of players from a small town in Kansas wasn’t supposed to beat this Tulsa team. That was a great win for our guys and showed them that playing the game aggressively can put pressure on opponents. We really worked on proper stealing techniques offensively and holding runners defensively. The difference in that game was our 7 stolen bases vs 0 stolen bases for the Tigers. Both teams had left handed pitchers throwing which usually shuts down the running game.”

Great Bend Bombers baseball team wins OKC tournament

McPherson senior shortstop Hunter Alvord and Wichita Collegiate senior pitcher Hayden Malaise helped their teams repeat as state champions, and both earned top awards from the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches for the second straight year. The KABC announced its 2023 All-State teams, as well as players, pitchers and coaches of the year for all classes. Alvord, last year’s Class 4A co-player of the year with Tonganoxie’s Gehrig Goldbeck, earned the outright honor this season after leading the Bullpups to a 21-4 record, including a 6-0 victory over Columbus in Friday’s 4A title game in Salina. Malaise, who helped Collegiate win its second straight Class 3A championship, repeated as 3A pitcher of the year. The Cloud Community College-bound right-hander was one of three Spartans named to the All-3A first team. Olathe South catcher and Kansas State commit Nick English was named Class 6A player of the year. Blue Valley Northwest career strikeout leader Jack Kreisman earned 6A pitcher of the year honors, while Olathe North’s Adam Loecker earned coach of the year honors after leading the Eagles to a state tournament berth. In Class 5A, St. Thomas Aquinas junior Blake O’Brien was named player of the year after leading the Saints to a third-place state finish. Eisenhower senior and Wichita State signee Tyner Horn earned pitcher of the year after posting a 0.00 ERA that culminated with a three-hit shutout of Seaman in the 5A quarterfinals. Clay Center senior Mark Hoffman joined Alvord among 4A individual honorees, earning pitcher of the year after helping the Tigers post a 21-2 record and reach the state tournament. Hoffman’s coach, Andrew Bent, was named 4A coach of the year. Wichita Trinity claimed two of the 3A honors, as senior Easton Norris was named player of the year and Josh Robertson was voted coach of the year. The Knights posted a 20-3 record, with all of the losses coming to 3A champion Collegiate. Little River’s 20-2 season yielded a Class 2-1A player of the year honor for senior Braden Young and coach of the year honor for Terry Renken. The KABC announced its 2023 All-State teams, as well as players, pitchers and coaches of the year for all classes. Alvord, last year’s Class 4A co-player of the year with Tonganoxie’s Gehrig Goldbeck, earned the outright honor this season after leading the Bullpups to a 21-4 record, including a 6-0 victory over Columbus in Friday’s 4A title game in Salina. Malaise, who helped Collegiate win its second straight Class 3A championship, repeated as 3A pitcher of the year. The Cloud Community College-bound right-hander was one of three Spartans named to the All-3A first team. Olathe South catcher and Kansas State commit Nick English was named Class 6A player of the year. Blue Valley Northwest career strikeout leader Jack Kreisman earned 6A pitcher of the year honors, while Olathe North’s Adam Loecker earned coach of the year honors after leading the Eagles to a state tournament berth. In Class 5A, St. Thomas Aquinas junior Blake O’Brien was named player of the year after leading the Saints to a third-place state finish. Eisenhower senior and Wichita State signee Tyner Horn earned pitcher of the year after posting a 0.00 ERA that culminated with a three-hit shutout of Seaman in the 5A quarterfinals. Clay Center senior Mark Hoffman joined Alvord among 4A individual honorees, earning pitcher of the year after helping the Tigers post a 21-2 record and reach the state tournament. Hoffman’s coach, Andrew Bent, was named 4A coach of the year. Wichita Trinity claimed two of the 3A honors, as senior Easton Norris was named player of the year and Josh Robertson was voted coach of the year. The Knights posted a 20-3 record, with all of the losses coming to 3A champion Collegiate. Little River’s 20-2 season yielded a Class 2-1A player of the year honor for senior Braden Young and coach of the year honor for Terry Renken. Elkhart’s Kage Ralstin was named pitcher of the year after helping the Wildcats post a third-place state finish. Area baseball players named to KABC All-State teams

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Josh Staumont and Mike Mayers came within six outs of the first combined perfect game in major league history before Nolan Arenado lined a leadoff single in the eighth inning of the Kansas City Royals' 7-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

“You're definitely aware of it,” Mayers said of a perfect game. “I tried to keep it business as usual. The goal was to throw up as many zeroes as you possibly can and that's the mindset I stayed in.”

Staumont,, a 29-year-old right-hander, served as the opener in a planned bullpen game for the Royals. He made his first major league start in his 167th appearance and struck out two in a 1-2-3 inning, throwing 14 pitches.

“That was one of the most exciting moments for me of the year,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “For him to set the tone like that was unbelievable.”

Mayers, a 31-year-old left-hander who pitched for the Cardinals from 2016-19, made his third appearance for the Royals this season after eight starts at Triple-A Omaha. He retired 18 consecutive batters before Arenado lined a 1-0 slider to left on his 72nd pitch.

“He did a great job today,” Arenado said. “We just couldn't get anything going.”

Willson Contreras followed with a single to center that stopped an 0 for 29 slide.

“I can't say what I was thinking there,” Mayers said with a chuckle. “I made two very bad pitches in that inning and they're good hitters. They made me pay for them.”

Taylor Clarke relieved and retired Brendan Donovan, Paul DeJong and Alex Burleson in order. Amir Garrett pitched a perfect ninth to finish a two-hitter and Kansas City's second shutout this year.

St. Louis was shut out for the sixth time and has scored 13 runs in its last six games.

“It was just hard to get anything going offensively,” St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol said. “Today was a tough one.”

There have been 23 perfect games, the last by Seattle’s Félix Hernández against Tampa Bay on Aug. 15, 2012. All perfect games have been complete games.

Kansas City had not shut out the Cardinals since May 22, 2015, and had not blanked them in St. Louis since June 2, 2014.

In the opener of a two-game series, the Royals tied their season high with 16 hits and stranded 14 runners, one shy of their high.

Nicky Lopez matched his career high with four hits, and Nick Pratto and Vinnie Pasquantino had three each. Mike Massey hit a two-run homer and Bobby Witt Jr. added a solo homer.

Adam Wainwright (2-1) allowed three runs and nine hits in five innings for the Cardinals, playing their 18th game in a stretch of 19 days in a row. The Cardinals and the Royals have back-to-back days off Wednesday and Thursday.

“The stuff's OK. The location's OK,” Wainwright said. “Nothing great. We're in one of those funks right now. Baseball is a crazy game like that. I'm trying to take a big picture view. The little moments, I'm not winning right now."

Pasquantino hit an RBI double in the third.

“I'm feeling solid and ready to go tomorrow,” Pasquantino said. “It was kind of a weird game because it was tougher to score runs early and then we were able to break it opener later.”

MJ Melendez hit a run-scoring triple in the fifth and scored on Freddy Fermin's bunt down the first-base line for a 3-0 lead.

Pasquantino had an RBI single off Steven Matz, who turned 32 Monday, in the eighth, and Witt and Massey homered in the ninth against Drew VerHagen.

Witt snapped an 0-for-12 skid with the home run. He became the second Royal to hit 30 career homers before turning age 23.

CF Lars Nootbar left after Pratto doubled leading off the third inning, appearing to pull up near the wall. Nootbar has slammed into the wall catching a Massey drive in the second. The Cardinals said Nootbar had back spasms.

Royals: RHP Brad Keller (right shoulder impingement syndrome) is progressing well after throwing a recent bullpen.

Cardinals: OF Dylan Carlson (left ankle sprain) has been taking swings from the right side. On Monday, he took swings left-handed. Once he is comfortable, he will have short rehab stint in the minors.

RHP Zack Greinke (1-5, 4.55) starts Tuesday for the Royals and RHP Miles Mikolas (3-1, 4.23) for the Cardinals. Grienke is 13-7 with a 3.48 ERA against St. Louis. Mikolas pitched a four-hit shutout in his only game against the Royals on May 21, 2018.

Wake Forest is the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament and the

Tuesday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

ARLINGTON, Texas – TCU defeated Oklahoma State, 12-5, to win the Horned Frogs’ fourth Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball title in nine years. The Horned Frogs’ offense stayed hot as they scored the most runs (48) in the Big 12 Championship by a team since 2013.

TCU improved to 4-1 in the Big 12 Championship final (2014, 2016, 2021, 2023).

The attendance of 14,673 for the final is a Big 12 Championship record while the total attendance of 132,291 throughout the Championship was the second-highest in the league’s history.

TCU got on the board in the second inning after an RBI infield single by Anthony Silva that scored Tre Richardson. Luke Boyers followed up with a three-run home run to right center, which gave the Horned Frogs a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Richardson hit a bases-clearing double that scored Brayden Taylor and Karson Bowen, but Cole Fontenelle was thrown out at home by Oklahoma State third baseman Tyler Wulfert. The inning continued with an RBI single from Austin Davis which scored Kurtis Byrne.

Oklahoma State responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. A bases-loaded walk by Nolan Schubart and an RBI fielder’s choice by Wulfert cut the lead down to 8-2 after three innings.

TCU tallied a run in the top of the fifth inning from an RBI groundout by Davis, making it 9-2.

Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Davis singled for the Horned Frogs, scoring Byrne. Oklahoma State tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off a three-run home run by Schubart to make it a 10-5 game.

The Horned Frogs answered in the next half inning with Taylor’s two-run home run, to put TCU up 12-5 the rest of the game.

Taylor was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Championship.

Chase Hoover pitched the first two innings for TCU, giving up two hits, two runs, three walks and threw four strikeouts. He was relieved by Luke Savage (W, 3-3) who pitched four innings giving up two hits, no runs and one walk on two strikeouts. Garrett Wright closed out the game by striking out the side for the Horned Frogs.

Ben Abram started the game for the Cowboys (L, 8-3) going 2.0 innings, giving up four hits, four runs, no walks and adding three strikeouts.

During the game it was announced that Oklahoma State will host a regional in Stillwater June 2-5. Full selections for the 2023 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship will be revealed Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2. TCU recieves the Big 12's automatic bid to the field.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Massey's single with two outs in the ninth scored MJ Melendez to cap a late rally that lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday.

The Royals hit homers in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game, then pulled it out in the ninth to avoid a sweep.

Melendez reached with one out on an error by first baseman Dominic Smith and scored when Massey lined a single into right off Chad Kuhl (0-3) that fell in front of Lane Thomas.

“I was trying to be selectively aggressive,” Massey said. “I was just making sure I was staying in the spot I was looking and didn't help the pitcher out. I thought the outfielder was going to get it, but then luckily it had some top spin and dove on him. Luckily it fell in there for us.”

Washington's Mackenzie Gore struck out a career-high 11 over seven innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk. He gave up a double to the leadoff batter, then didn’t allow another hit until the sixth inning.

“It was good,” Gore said. “We did a lot of good things today and look, we just won the series. It's a tough loss, but we just have to keep taking it one day at a time. We put some guys away today and the last few outings I haven't done that so that was a lot of fun.”

Scott Barlow (2-3) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and got the win.

The Royals reinstated LHP Daniel Lynch and placed LHP Josh Taylor (left shoulder impingement syndrome) on the 15-day Injured List.

Great Bend and Kapaun Mt. Carmel. The drama worked in favor of the Lady Panthers last year. A split-second, come-from-behind win in the final race of the 2022 season propelled Great Bend past the Crusaders for second place in Class 5A. That was not the case in 2023. After beating Kapaun by a single point last year, Great Bend came up a point shy of the Crusaders for a third-place finish at the KSHSAA State Track and FIeld Championships Saturday in Wichita.

Kapaun led Great Bend by four points Saturday evening. The Crusaders, however, did not advance to the 4x400m finals. A top-four finish for Great Bend would have again secured the second-place trophy. The team of Sadie Spray, Eliana Beckham, Daizy Gomez, and Makenzie Premer ran its best time of 4:04 in Friday's prelims. Saturday, the team ran a 4:07.32 for sixth place, picking up three points. The girls finished 0.02 seconds behind fifth-place Blue Valley Southwest that would have garnered another point. Only two teams in the finals field ran under 4:06.

The weekend did have its highlights, however. Early Saturday morning, senior Valarie Luna won the 5A title in the high jump by clearing the bar at 5-6. The school-record holder at 5-7, she just missed her final attempt at 5-8. Two big points were lost on a single jump at 5-4 when Spray missed her first attempt and Hays sophomore Katie Linenberger made it over. The pair stayed at 5-4 and Spray finished third. Cassie Ellegood finished 10th in the field.

Premer and Spray did all they could in the 300m hurdle finals. Hutchinson's Annalisa Cullens was denied a third-title in the 100s after an ugly fall, but was still a favorite in the 300s. She won in 45.43, followed by Premer in 46.66 for the silver, and Spray in 47.34 for the bronze.

The junior Beckham picked up crucial points in the 800m run with a fifth-place finish. She ran a personal best of 2:21.52 to miss fourth place by half a second. Freshman Sienna Smith ran 13th in the field.

The 4x800m relay proved extra crucial with Kapaun in the mix for big points. The Crusaders ran third in 9:36.99, followed by Great Bend's team of Premer, Beckham, Smith, and Addy Nicholson in 9:41.88 for fourth, even after breaking a 25-year-old GBHS record.

The 1600m race featured two of the top-10 all-class times this spring. Nicholson ran seventh in 5:22.16. Kapaun freshman Taylor Barringer secured fourth place by less than half a second to keep that extra point. Nicholson ran her best time of the season in Friday's 3200m run to place fourth in 11:38.38, six seconds out of third place.

The javelin proved to be another crucial event for Great Bend with no Kapaun throwers in the mix. Junior Macy Nachtigal finished seventh at 124-10 to miss another point by just six inches. Senior Kyndall Blessing placed 12th on a throw of 113-1.

Great Bend's 4x100m relay team of Premer, Gomez, Spray, and Luna finished 11th in Friday's prelims in 50.71, missing a spot in the finals by less than half a second.

St. James Academy won the 5A team title with 81 points. Kapaun followed with 52 points, and Great Bend brings home hardware with 51 points. DeSoto scored 41 points for fourth.

Luna wins state title, Lady Panthers finish hard-luck third at state track meet

With just a handful of athletes at the 2023 KSHSAA Track and Field State Championships in Wichita Friday and Saturday, the Great Bend boys were in no contention for team hardware. But the Panthers did make the most of their contention by bringing home several state medals.

Senior Kaiden Esfeld kicked off action Friday night in the Class 5A 3200m run finals. He ran a personal best of 9:33.73, which was good for seventh place. Esfeld missed sixth place by a quarter of a second.

Senior Mathew Moeder also picked up a medal in the javelin Friday. His first throw of 164-2 proved to be his best of the day, good enough for sixth place. He missed fifth-place by 19 inches. Even with top-seeded Jackson Daniel of Kapaun fouling on his three throws, the event still featured two of the top-50 throws in the U.S. this year.

Esfeld picked up another medal in the 1600m run Saturday afternoon. He ran sixth in 4:24.38 to miss fifth place by half a second. Kapaun senior Luke Brock set a 5A meet record with the win by 0.23 seconds in 4:15.03. The race featured three top-10 all-class performances in Kansas this spring.

Esfeld closed out his decorated career as a Panther with his best finish of the state meet in the 800m run. He placed fifth in 1:57.85 to miss fourth place by just 0.35 seconds, and miss the bronze by 1.38 seconds. The event featured two top-10 all-class times in Kansas this spring.

There is no preliminary race for the 4x800m relay. Great Bend's team of Ramiro Rocho, Pedro Enriquez, Braylon Moore, and Alex Galindo placed 16th in Saturday morning's finals in 8:41.42, eight seconds out of 15th place.

Private schools took four of the top-five spots in the team standings, led by St. James Academy with 68.5 points. Kapaun scored 66 points for second, and Hays broke up the sweep with 51.5 points in fourth.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — CJ Abrams hit a two-run double in Washington’s four-run sixth inning, Corey Dickerson got his 1,000th career hit and the Washington Nationals defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-2. After Josiah Gray gave up two runs and four hits in four innings, Mason Thompson, Carl Edwards Jr., Hunter Harvey and Kyle Finnegan held the Royals scoreless. Finnegan earned his 11th save of the season. The Nationals have scored a combined 12 runs in the sixth inning through the first two games of the three-game series. Washington’s Lane Thomas hit a double in the fifth to extend his on-base streak to a career-high 23 straight games. Salvador Perez homered for Kansas City.

DENVER (AP) — Ryan McMahon hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning and the Colorado Rockies outslugged the New York Mets 10-7 on Saturday night after blowing an early six-run lead. Charlie Blackmon’s two-run double in a five-run second helped the Rockies race out to a 6-0 advantage against Justin Verlander after three innings. Pete Alonso’s major league-high 20th homer started New York’s comeback in the fourth, and the Mets tied it 6-all when rookie Francisco Álvarez capped a five-run sixth with a three-run homer off reliever Jake Bird. Starling Marte’s two-out RBI single in the seventh put New York in front, but Elias Díaz doubled leading off the bottom half against Jeff Brigham (0-1) and McMahon followed with a two-run shot to right field that traveled a projected 439 feet.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Brendan Donovan scored on a passed ball in the 10th inning after homering in the second, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. Automatic runner Donovan began the inning on second, stole third base and came home when third-string catcher David Fry mishandled a pitch by Nick Sandlin to Oscar Mercado. St. Louis won for the 14th time in its last 20 games despite managing just two hits against Guardians starter Tanner Bibee and four relievers. None occurred after Alec Burleson singled in the third. Ryan Helsley pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win and Giovanny Gallegos earned his sixth save with a scoreless 10th.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Kurtis Byrne homered and TCU took advantage of every opportunity to defeat Kansas State 6-3 to advance to the championship game of the Big 12 Conference Tournament. The Horned Frogs had only three hits but took advantage of three errors, five walks and a hit batter by the Wildcats. TCU will play the winner of Texas Tech-Oklahoma State in Sunday’s championship. Sam Stoutenborough and Ben Abeldt (2-3) combined to allow 12 hits but came up with key outs as Kansas State stranded 10 runners. The game was tied at 3 after five innings . A hit batter, walk and Tre Richardson beating out a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases for the Horned Frogs in the sixth. Brayden Taylor scoring the winning run when Anthony Silva grounded into a double play.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Aidan Meola hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth and No 7 seed Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech 6-5 to eliminate the Red Raiders and advance to the championship game of the Big 12 Tournament. Oklahoma's 48th straight win clinched a Women’s College World Series berth. Oklahoma will play Stanford in its World Series opener. Tennessee and Washington also clinched World Series spots with wins.

MIAMI (AP) — Derrick White scored on a putback as time expired and the Boston Celtics moved to the brink of the greatest comeback in NBA playoff history, holding off the Miami Heat 104-103 to force a Game 7 in the Eastern Conference finals. Jayson Tatum scored 31 points, Jaylen Brown scored 26 and Marcus Smart added 21 for the Celtics. Jimmy Butler made three free throws with 3.0 seconds left for a one-point Heat lead. Smart missed a 3-pointer, but White grabbed the rebound and scored as time expired. Butler scored 24 points and Caleb Martin scored 21 for the Heat.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ty Dellandrea scored twice in a 1:27 span midway through the third period and the Dallas Stars beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 on Saturday night to stay alive in the Western Conference Final. The Stars escaped elimination for the second game in a row and head to Dallas for Game 6 on Monday night down 3-2. Dallas is attempting to become the fifth team in NHL history win a series after being down 3-0. Dellandrea had the first multigoal game of his playoff career, and it helped back a 27-save performance from Jake Oettinger. Jason Robertson and Luke Glendening also scored, and Thomas Harley had two assists. Chandler Stephenson and Ivan Barbashev scored for the Knights, and Jonathan Marchessault had two assists to extend his points streak to four games. Adin Hill made 30 saves.

MONACO (AP) — Formula One champion Max Verstappen’s lights-to-flag victory win at the Monaco Grand gave the Red Bull driver his fourth victory of the season and extended his championship lead. CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Cup Series points leader William Byron will start on the pole for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 after qualifying was rained out at Charlotte Motor Speedway. NASCAR also announced the Xfinity Series race scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Monday at noon ET. The Coca-Cola 600 is still scheduled to run on Sunday night but a forecast calling for more rain could move NASCAR’s longest race to Monday, too.
