UNDATED (AP) — Alabama coach Nick Saban is retiring after winning more national championships than any other major college football coach. Saban won seven national championships and turned Alabama back into a national powerhouse that included six of those titles in 17 seasons. He made the announcement Wednesday. Saban led the Tide to nine Southeastern Conference championships and won his first national title at Alabama with a 14-0 season in 2009. Titles came again in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2020. He also won a national title with LSU in 2003.

(AP) — Six-time NFL champion Bill Belichick has agreed to part ways as the coach of the New England Patriots, bringing an end to his 24-year tenure as the architect of the most decorated dynasty of the league’s Super Bowl era. Belichick became just the third coach in NFL history to reach 300 career regular-season wins, joining Hall of Famers Don Shula and George Halas. Belichick trails only Shula for the record for victories by a coach. But this season, finishing with a 4-13 record, was Belichick’s worst in 29 seasons as an NFL head coach.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Pete Carroll is out after 14 seasons as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, responsible for two NFC championships and the only Super Bowl title in franchise history during his long tenure. The 72-year old coach is moving into an advisory role with the organization, according to a statement from owner Jody Allen on Wednesday. Seattle closed the regular season with a 21-20 win at Arizona on Sunday. The Seahawks entered the final two weeks of the regular season with the chance at reaching the playoffs for the 11th time with Carroll in charge, but a Week 17 loss to Pittsburgh left Seattle in need of help it didn’t get to close out the season.

The speech came a little more than a month after he sent a letter to D-I member schools with a potentially ground-breaking idea for a new subdivision at the top of college sports.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers are debating a ban on tackle football for children under 12 to reduce the risk of brain injuries under a bill that has cleared a key legislative hurdle. A legislative committee voted 5 to 2 during a public hearing Wednesday to advance the bill authored by Democratic Assemblymember Kevin McCarty. But the measure is a long way from passing. It must clear the state Assembly by the end of January to have a chance of becoming law this year. Advocates say the bill will protect kids from the risk of brain damage, but coaches and other football advocates say the ban would cut off kids from an important source of physical activity.

ORLANDO, FL (AP) — In the preseason Big 12 poll, No. 3 Kansas was predicted to finish first and UCF was predicted to come in last. The Knights' rallying cry to combat that noise was to prove they belonged.

In another topsy-turvy college basketball game, the Knights did just that, upending the Jayhawks 65-60 on Wednesday night.

“They were better than us tonight,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “There's no understating that they were better than us. On the flip side, we weren't very good.”

Ibrahima Diallo broke a 57-57 tie with less than three minutes left with a hook shot over Jayhawks (13-2, 1-1 Big 12) star Hunter Dickinson. He then blocked a KJ Adams Jr. shot with 50 seconds left to help the Knights (10-4, 1-1) preserve the lead and score the program’s first Big 12 conference win.

Jaylin Sellers led the Knights with 18 points and Darius Johnson added 17. UCF erased a 16-point deficit in the first half to secure the win, using a 10-0 run toward the end of the first half to close the gap and make it an eight-point deficit at the half.

The Knights then used a 14-6 start to the half to take the lead. The duo of Sellers and Johnson combined to make 7 of 13 3-pointers for the game and three of four in the second half.

The Jayhawks missed their chance to put the game away in a key turning point and the Knights took advantage.

“It just shows we can compete at the highest level,” Johnson said. “That is clearly a great basketball team. It just shows we can beat them, compete and be a postseason team.”

Kansas had 18 turnovers. The UCF center trio of Ibrahima Diallo, C.J. Walker and Omar Payne recorded five of the team’s seven blocks in the game.

Diallo had 13 points, five rebounds and a block to help anchor a UCF defense that forced eight turnovers and blocked four shots in the second half alone.

“We committed. Everyone had to lock in on defense,” Diallo said. “It was a defensive game. All my teammates we locked in on defense. That made the offense be easier.”

The Jayhawks got the Knights down by double-digits in the first half but could not figure out UCF’s length in the second half, scoring only 23 points and shooting 7-for-22 shooting in the second half.

Kansas entered the game averaging 79.9 points per game.

“We turned the ball over at a high rate,” Kevin McCullar Jr. said. “That leads to easy baskets for the other team, we have to take care of the ball better.”

McCullar scored 16 points to lead Kansas. Dickinson had only 12 points and played 28 minutes because of foul trouble.

Self said Dickinson was also slowed by a bruised knee that had him laboring throughout the game.

UCF’s victory came one night after No. 1 Purdue and second-ranked Houston lost.

The Knights lost their Big 12 opener at Kansas State 77-52.

Kansas was in a position to claim the top spot in next week's poll after the losses by the top two teams. But the Jayhawks have not looked dominant in conference play, winning their first Big 12 game at home against TCU by just two points before falling to UCF.

UCF picked up its first Big 12 win in its inaugural season in the conference, leading to fans storming the court in celebration after the victory.

Kansas will get a chance to recover when they host No. 9 Oklahoma on Saturday.

UCF Knights' defense powers team to comeback victory over No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks

The Kansas Wesleyan basketball teams will make their first out-of-state trip of the conference slate as they head north to York Nebraska to take on the Panthers on KINA.

Women's Game: Kansas Wesleyan (6-8, 4-4), York (3-9, 2-6)

The Coyotes have won each of the last six and nine of the last 10 against York. They won 81-75 last January at York and 70-34 last February in Mabee Arena. KWU has a 16-3 record against York since 2005.

The Panthers have lost their last three games and seven of their last eight, the latest a 92-59 setback against Friends on Saturday in Wichita. They lost to Bethel 89-67 last Wednesday in North Newton. 

York averages 65.5 points and is shooting 39 percent overall, 27 percent from long range. Opponents average 77.6 points and are shooting 45 percent.

Junior guard Ashley Rubio averages a team-best 8.7 points followed by junior forward Britney Schroer at 8.6 points and sophomore post Destiny Shepherd 8.3.

HONOLULU (AP) — Gary Woodland arrived at the Sony Open and had a good night of sleep, meaning he didn't jump out of bed and grab the side of the mattress to make sure he wasn't falling out of the sky to his death.

He flew to Hawaii without worrying the overhead bin would crash down and kill him.

Fear and anxiety were unfamiliar terms to this rock-chalk solid, three-sport star from Kansas, a former U.S. Open champion whose only fear was not living up to his high standards.

All that changed the last week in April, when Woodland was at the Mexico Open and began to experience symptoms such as being jolted awake by unfounded fears, tremors in his hands, chills and low energy.

When he asked his doctor for something to calm the anxiety, that led to an MRI ordered to rule out Parkinson's disease. Instead, it revealed a lesion on his brain on a tract that caused fear.

“That was the one that scared me the most,” Woodland said of his symptoms. “I’m a very optimistic person. I believe good things will happen. I was very fear-driven every day, mostly around death.”

Woodland played 10 tournaments with the symptoms, eight times on medication, seven times after the diagnosis. Remarkably, he made eight out of 10 cuts. But a summer of fear and medication gave way to the inevitable.

He had brain surgery on Sept. 18. Doctors cut a hole in the side of his skull the size of a baseball, big enough that it required 30 staples to close.

They didn't get all of it — there was a risk of losing sight in his left side and the use of the left side of his body — but it was deemed successful on other counts. The tumor was benign and the feelings of fear were gone.

“The support from the tour, from people outside the golf world, has been tremendous for me and my family,” Woodland said. “When I woke up and realized I was OK, I was filled with thankfulness and love. That replaced the fear.

“It was very emotional because I had gone four-and-a-half months of every day really thinking I was going to die,” he said. “The doctors kept telling me I was OK, but this thing pushing on my brain ... didn’t matter if I was driving a car, on an airplane, I thought everything was going to kill me. You can imagine leading up to surgery how I felt going into having my head cut open and operated on. The fear going into that was awful."

The Sony Open, which starts at Waialae Country Club, begins the long road back. Woodland spent two days in the hospital and insisted in on walking out.

His wife, Gabby, gave the green light to Woodland to convert the dining room into a putting green in their Florida home. He was putting two days after surgery, no more than an hour a day because that was all the energy he had.

Woodland started swinging a club after five weeks — his father was in town to drive him to the course, just like when he was a teenager and playing high-level baseball, basketball and golf.

And then his doctor cleared him to travel and the first call was to Butch Harmon in Las Vegas.

“It's so great, first off that he came through surgery and everything," Harmon said. “Forget about playing golf — we didn't know if he could make it. To come through it and get back to golf is a joy. He got a mulligan in life, a mulligan in his career.

“He's come back and he's worked hard,” Harmon said. “He has every opportunity to be a better player than he's ever been. I'm still not sure about his stamina. This will be a great week.”

Waialae, located along the shores just around the bend from Diamond Head, is among the flattest courses on the PGA Tour. Woodland expects this week to provide an indication how well his brain will hold up over six days of focus and the usual stress golf brings.

Harmon said he knew Woodland was back to being his old self during one recent phone call after Woodland had another doctor's visit.

“I asked him, ‘How did the consultation go?’ He said, ‘The doctor said it was the biggest brain he’d ever seen,'” Harmon said. “He was back to talking (smack) again.”

Harmon was in the dark as anyone about Woodland's travails, only that he would play well only to have a big number or an inexplicable bad stretch of golf. Woodland said there were times he would be over a shot and forget which club he was hitting, or he would line up a putt and feel he was taking too long and then just whack it.

“Didn't have the focus or energy,” he said.

How he fares in the first full-field tournament of the year will give him a reasonable expectation of where he is and how far he has to go. But he's back playing. Fear has been replaced by sheer gratitude, and understanding the value of support.

“I just want to prove you can do hard things,” Woodland said. "I want to prove to my kids nobody is going to tell you you can’t do anything. You can overcome tough, scary decisions in your life. Not everything is easy.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Coach Andy Reid was asked what impact a frigid forecast might have for Saturday night's wild-card playoff game between the Chiefs and Dolphins, and whether Kansas City would try to acclimatize by practicing outside this week.

Reid looked out a nearby window Tuesday and saw the 6 inches of snow that had blanketed the ground.

“We probably won't go out today,” he replied, “but there's a good chance tomorrow.”

The weather doesn't figure to be much better Wednesday, or the rest of the week for that matter. There is more snow coming late in the week, and then comes the bitter cold: The high temperature Saturday could struggle to reach double digits, and by the time the game is kicked off long after darkness sets in, the wind chill is expected to be well below zero.

Could that be an advantage for the Chiefs, who have played in similarly cold conditions plenty of times over the years, given that the Dolphins will spend the week practicing in 70-degree temps in South Florida?

“You can't bank on that. That's where you get into trouble,” Reid said. “We're not having a snowball fight.”

Perhaps the Dolphins would fare better in one of those.

They have lost 10 straight when the temperature is 40 degrees or colder, and by an average of 17 points. And the forecast for their playoff game against Kansas City calls for temps to be 40 degrees below that point, with wind whipping from every angle through Arrowhead Stadium and accumulated snowfall certain to make it feel that much colder.

“A lot of people don't want to get hit, or hit in cold weather. It hurts a little more,” admitted Dolphins linebacker David Long, who grew up in the cold weather in Cincinnati. “And that's when you see what types of players you have on your team. How much do you love it? How much do you want to get to that certain point as a team?”

Long may be accustomed to the snow and cold. Same with Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who played his first six seasons in Kansas City, and will be returning to Arrowhead Stadium for the first time since he was traded away two years ago.

That may not be the case for Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who grew up in Hawaii and played college ball at Alabama.

“I don't think it means that we are soft or scared of the elements, just because the weather is better down here,” said Dolphins tight end Durham Smythe, a Pennsylvania native who played at Notre Dame.

“The guys in that locker room, obviously we come from all over, too. It's not like we all lived here in Miami our entire lives. We've dealt with elements before.”

Not particularly well, though. The Dolphins' cold weather losing streak began with a loss to Pittsburgh in 2017, when it was a balmy 17 degrees at kickoff. It continued through games in Buffalo, Cleveland, Green Bay and, yes, Kansas City, where the Chiefs beat the Dolphins 29-13 on Christmas Eve in 2017 when it was a mere 23 degrees at the start of the game.

As for Tagovailoa, the Miami quarterback is winless in four games when the temp is 45 degrees or lower.

“If we're playing in any playoff game that isn't at home,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel observed, “it probably will be cold. It will be the same for both teams. For us and for the individuals in the locker room, I know they will not use that as an excuse.”

Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement that she told Vrabel of her decision Tuesday morning. She said it was a decision “as difficult as any I’ve made.” The announcement came a day after the Titans cleaned out their lockers with Vrabel not speaking to reporters. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Cam Carter scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half to help Kansas State pull away and beat West Virginia 81-67 on Tuesday night.

Kansas State (12-3, 2-0 Big 12), which snapped a four-game losing streak against West Virginia in Morgantown, has won nine of its last 10 games. West Virginia (5-10, 0-2) has lost three straight and five of its last six.

K-State trailed 42-40 at halftime, but Carter scored seven points and Arthur Kaluma made a pair of 3s during a 17-5 run to open the second half to give the Wildcats a 57-47 lead. Kaluma’s 3-pointer from deep during the opening surge gave the Wildcats a 48-45 advantage, and the Wildcats led the rest of the way.

West Virginia pulled within 59-54 with 7:46 remaining, but Carter scored the next four points from the free-throw line to spark a 10-0 surge and the Mountaineers didn't get closer.

Carter was 6 of 14 from the floor and made all 10 of his free throws. He has scored in double figures in 13 of 15 games. Kaluma, a junior transfer from Creighton, scored 17 points with four 3-pointers. David N’Guessan also scored 17 points for the Wildcats and Will McNair Jr. chipped in 12.

RaeQuan Battle scored 21 points to lead West Virginia, but he was scoreless in the final 18 minutes. Kerr Kriisa and Noah Farrakhan added 11 points apiece.

Battle scored 12 of West Virginia’s first 19 points before his teammates started helping out. The Mountaineers overcame a seven-point deficit to go ahead at halftime. Battle had 18 points in the first half and Kriisa chipped in eight.

Battle has made playing well against Kansas State a habit. In last season’s NCAA Tournament, Battle was playing for Montana State when he scored 27 points against the Wildcats.

The last Wildcat win in Morgantown was a 65-51 victory on Feb. 18, 2019.

Kansas State plays at Texas Tech on Saturday.

West Virginia hosts No. 25 Texas on Saturday.

Barton Men No. 9 in new NJCAA Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs hardly could have envisioned a better way for their regular season to end against the Los Angeles Chargers.

They rested Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and most of their big-name stars. Their backups played well in their absence, helping the Chiefs to a 13-12 road win over a division rival. Chris Jones even got the sack he needed to trigger a $1.25 million bonus, which the Pro Bowl defensive tackle said he would use in part to buy his fellow defensive linemen Rolex watches.

“I had to beg (Chiefs coach Andy Reid) for one more series," Jones said with a smile afterward. “He gave me the finger like, ‘One more and you’re done.’ So I went on the field praying to God like, ‘Oh my God, please.’”

It was fun all around for Kansas City (11-6), which had been having very little of it when it was losing three out of four games.

The Chiefs looked better in a win over the Bengals that clinched the AFC West and the No. 3 seed, though, and made their game against the Chargers almost entirely meaningless. But now, the reigning Super Bowl champions do have some momentum as the Miami Dolphins prepare to visit for a wild-card game Saturday night.

The teams played earlier this season in Germany and Kansas City held on for a 21-14 victory.

“It was good to get the win, for sure," Reid said after the Chargers game. "I think it uplifts you, especially for those young guys who don’t have a chance to play. To say, ‘Hey, listen, I got in, and not only did I get it, we won the game.’ I think that’s positive.”

Mahomes looked just as invested in the outcome as if he was playing the way he stormed off the bench when Harrison Butker kicked the go-ahead field goal in the final minute. So did the rest of the Chiefs who were sitting out the game.

“Great job,” Mahomes said while breaking down the team in the postgame locker room, “but now it's time to go.”

It was fitting that the Kansas City defense scored the only touchdown on Sunday, when Mike Edwards picked up a fumble and ran it 97 yards the other way. That side of the ball has been bailing out the Chiefs' mistake-prone offense for much of the season.

The defensive front when the opposing quarterbacks run. Easton Stick’s legs were the most dangerous part of the Chargers' offense on Sunday, and other QBs have had success scrambling against Kansas City’s otherwise stingy defense.

The Chiefs could face a number of mobile quarterbacks in the postseason, beginning with the Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa.

Mecole Hardman hasn't factored into the offense much since his trade from the Jets, partly due to injuries. But given his increased role with Rashee Rice and other regulars resting, Hardman responded with six catches for 77 yards. And one of them was the kind of contested catch that hardly anybody in a Kansas City uniform has made this season.

“He played hard and it was a good experience for him to get out there,” Reid said. “Kind of getting back into that football shape play after play after play. We’ll see where it goes from there. We know Mecole and we know what he can do.”

Hard to say given how many starters sat out Sunday. Even their suspect corps of wide receivers played relatively well.

The biggest loss Sunday was left tackle Wanya Morris, who entered the concussion protocol. He already was replacing Donovan Smith, who has been out several weeks with a neck stinger. Depth along the offensive line suddenly is a question mark.

The Boilermakers picked up five more first-place votes and has 54 of the 63 available. The Cougars received seven first-place votes after improving to 14-0 for the third time in school history. Kansas had the other two first-place nods but fell to third. Defending national champ UConn and Tennessee rounded out the top five. San Diego State, Utah State and Creighton are ranked at the expense of Ole Miss, James Madison and Providence.
