Arthur Kaluma added 14 points for Kansas State (11-3, 1-0), which has won eight of its last nine games. Cam Carter chipped in 12 points and blocked three shots. Will McNair Jr. scored 11 points. Darius Johnson scored 10 points for UCF (9-4, 0-1), Perry hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 13-0 run in the second half that stretched the Wildcats’ lead to 60-25 with 12 minutes left. It was their largest of the game.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored with 3.4 seconds left to lift No. 2 Kansas past TCU 83-81. Dickinson led Kansas with 30 points on Saturday. He hit a pair of free throws after a flagrant foul on TCU’s Ernest Udeh Jr. with less than a minute remaining to tie the game. Dickinson then followed Dajuan Harris Jr.’s miss in the final seconds. Kansas also got 18 points from KJ Adams Jr. Kevin McCullar Jr. had 16 points and Harris scored 10. TCU was led by Trevian Tennyson with 24 points.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech’s Pop Isaacs scored 21 points to lead the Red Raiders to 78-67 Big 12-opening win over No. 20 Texas a day after he was named in a lawsuit alleging sexual assault of a minor. Isaacs was booed by Texas fans whenever he touched the ball, and at one point put his fingers to his lips after a 3-pointer to shush them. Isaacs was not made available after the game and coach Grant McCasland said he had no additional comment beyond a school statement that said it is conducting an investigation. Tyrese Hunter scored 20 to lead Texas.

HOUSTON (AP) — L.J. Cryer scored 20 points, Damian Dunn added 14 points and No. 3 Houston improved to 14-0 with an 89-55 win over West Virginia in the Cougars’ inaugural Big 12 contest. Cryer scored 16 points in the first half on 6-of-7 shooting, including four 3-pointers, as Houston shot 58% as a team and took a 48-22 lead into halftime on Saturday. Cryer has scored at least 20 points in five games this season. Patrick Suemnick had 12 points and five rebounds, and Noah Farrakhan added nine points for West Virginia.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Javian McCollum had 15 points and five assists, and No. 11 Oklahoma defeated Iowa State 71-63 in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Milos Uzan scored 12 points, Le’Tre Darthard scored 11 and Sam Godwin added 10 points and six rebounds for the Sooners. Hason Ward, Milan Momcilovic and Robert Jones each scored 12 points for Iowa State. The Cyclones had won six straight. The Cyclones, who entered the day averaging 86.2 points per game, shot 42.6% from the field, including 3 of 16 from 3-point range.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Viktor Lakhin scored 17 points and Aziz Bandaogo had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cincinnati to a 71-60 victory over No. 12 BYU in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Jizzle James also added 12 for the Bearcats, who won their fourth straight game after rallying from a halftime deficit for the second straight game. Trevin Knell scored a career-high 27 points on a career-high nine 3-pointers to lead BYU. Dallin Hall added 10 points but no other player scored in double figures for the Cougars, who lost at home for the first time this season.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans wrapped up a playoff spot with a 23-19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday night, with Devin Singletary scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a 3-yard run with 6:20 left. The Texans (10-7) are going to the postseason for the first time since 2019. They won seven of their final 10 games and still could win the AFC South if Jacksonville loses at Tennessee on Sunday. Indianapolis (9-8) was eliminated from the playoff chase with its third loss in five weeks. Stroud was 20 of 26 with 264 yards and two touchdowns, and Nico Collins had nine catches for 195 yards and a score. Jonathan ran for 188 yards and a TD for the Colts.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Gardner Minshew tried to console Tyler Goodson after the running back dropped a fourth-down pass with 1:06 seconds left in a win-or-go home game against Houston on Saturday night. Heck, Minshew even said after the after the 23-19, playoff-eliminating loss he should have made a better throw. Regardless of who was to blame, Goodson, Minshew and the Colts had no choice but to accept the cold, hard reality — their season is over because on a night they converted only one of third-down chance, they also blew their only fourth-down attempt of the game. Goodson was wide open. And had they connected, Goodson had blockers and a possible lane to the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Mason Rudolph threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Diontae Johnson on the first play of the fourth quarter, and the Pittsburgh Steelers took a step toward the postseason with a 17-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Rudolph led Pittsburgh to three straight wins to close the season, and now the Steelers wait. They would make the playoffs Sunday if Buffalo loses to Miami or Jacksonville loses to Tennessee. There was some bad news for the Steelers. The Ravens have already locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC and held Lamar Jackson out of this game.

HOUSTON (AP) — With NFL franchises apparently intrigued with Michigan's Jim Harbaugh again, the question hanging over the College Football Playoff national championship game Monday night between the top-ranked Wolverines and No. 2 Washington is: Could this be his last as the coach of his alma mater? Harbaugh was having none of the speculation at media day. What makes the latest round of will-he-or-won’t-he with Harbaugh and the NFL unique is how it has reverberated all the way out to Seattle, where Washington has been working on a new contract for Kalen DeBoer since November.

HOUSTON (AP) — That extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season is paying off for the teams playing in the College Football Playoff championship game Monday night. Among Washington’s 22 offensive and defensive starters, seven are in their sixth seasons and seven are in their fifth. Michigan has one starter in his sixth season and eight in their fifth. Michigan co-defensive coordinator Jesse Minter says all that experience was a factor in both teams making it to Houston.

NEW YORK (AP) — Draymond Green has been reinstated by the NBA from his suspension after the Golden State star missed 12 games for hitting Phoenix center Jusuf Nurkic in the face on Dec. 12. The league says Green “demonstrated his commitment to conforming his conduct to standards expected of NBA players” during his suspension, which began Dec. 14. He has met with a counselor as well as had multiple joint meetings with representatives of the league, the Warriors and the National Basketball Players Association. Those meetings, the league added, will continue throughout the season. The Warriors have gone 7-5 without Green, who was also suspended five games in November for placing Minnesota center Rudy Gobert in a headlock.

Sunday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

The Lady Panther wrestling team hit the ground running in 2024. The New Year opener in Dodge City Saturday featured the top-ranked Lady Demons (6-5A), who scored 192 points for the win. Dumas (Texas) finished second with 158 points, followed by fifth-ranked Manhattan (6-5A) in third with 154 points. Fourth-ranked Great Bend scored 144.5 points for fourth, followed by No. 5 Pratt (4-1A) with 132.5 points for fifth.

Second-ranked Daizy Gomez carried over her momentum from 2023 with the championship at 130 pounds. Gomez needed just 35 seconds to beat her Manhattan opponent, then she pinned her second opponent in just 54 seconds. Pratt's fourth-ranked Wendy Candia defeated Dodge City's Ariana De La Rosa to halt another rematch.&nbsp;Gomez pinned Candia in the finals.

Second-ranked Natalee Daniels made the finals at 190 pounds. The sophomore pinned her first three opponents before losing to Liberal's top-ranked junior Hayleen Martinez, who won the bracket.

Third-ranked Kaylea McMullen made the finals at 125 pounds. She went 2-0 in pool matches with a pair of pins. Fifth-ranked Gracelyn Hembree, a sophomore from Pratt, defeated McMullen 4-2 in the finals. Aly Feil placed 10th for the Lady Panthers. 

Kirra Stevens is still vying for a spot in the rankings at 170 pounds. She finished third Saturday after pinning her first two opponents and moving to 3-0 with a 4-3 decision against Olathe East. Stevens pinned her Goddard opponent in the consolation finals. Two Dodge City wrestlers claimed the top-two spots. Lea Nokes placed eighth for Great Bend, Haley Suchy finished 10th, and A'Teija Thomas grabbed 12th.

Fifth-ranked Camdyn Post placed fourth at 105 pounds. The freshman pinned her first two opponents before a 14-11 loss to third-ranked Miranda Isabela Gutierrez of Liberal. Post pinned sixth-ranked Miranda Alvarez of Dodge City and won an injury default. Post finished behind two wrestlers from Texas and Gutierrez. 

Kayle Baldwin placed fourth at 100 pounds. She went 3-0 in pool matches with three pins. She was pinned by Manhattan's Eva Lucios in the consolation finals. Top-ranked Jaidyn Alvarado of Junction City (6-5A) defeated Dodge City's third-ranked freshman Elizabeth Ramirez in the finals. Great Bend's Trinaty Aumiller placed 13th.

Keira Leyva finished fourth at 110 pounds. She pinned her first opponent before a loss to third-ranked Charly Goodwin of Junction City. Leyva pinned her next two opponents before a loss to Pratt. Goodwin went on to win the bracket.

Sariah Cox was another fourth-place finisher at 145 pounds. She went 3-0 in pool matches with a pair of pins and a 10-5 decision. She lost an ultimate tie break to a Texas wrestler in the consolation finals. Third-ranked Yareli Garcia of Dodge City won the bracket. Josephine Blevins placed ninth for Great Bend. 

Danica Cline finished sixth at 155 pounds. She went 2-1 in pool matches with a pair of pins and a loss to second-ranked Liliana Arroya Alba of Dodge City. Cline lost a 2-0 battle to a Texas wrestler in the fifth-place match. Top-ranked Sage Rosario of Manhattan defeated Arroyo Alba in the finals. Rylee Schnoebelen finished 10th for the Lady Panthers.

Braelyn Turner placed seventh at 120 pounds. She pinned her first opponent but lost a match to second-ranked Kayla Cramer of Manhattan. Turner needed just 40 seconds to pin Hoxie's Mariah Barnett in the seventh-place match. Cramer went on to win the bracket.

Kaydence Demel placed ninth at 135 pounds. That bracket featured No. 4 Hailey Ramos of Dodge City and No. 2 Keimarla Thompson of Pratt. Shatarah Newton finished 10th at 140 pounds.

No. 4 Lady Panther wrestlers finish fourth at Dodge City

The Panther wrestlers climbed to No. 4 in the final Class 5A rankings of 2023. Saturday in Dodge City, Great Bend had yet another test against top-ranked Manhattan (6A) and top-ranked Goddard, winner of eight of the last nine 5A titles. Manhattan scored 193 points for the win, followed by Goddard with 156 points, and the Panthers with 139 points in third. Three-time defending 3-1A champ and current No. 1 Hoxie placed fourth with 131.5 points, and No. 5 Valley Center (5A) placed fifth with 127 points.

No. 2 Kaiden Hoffman advanced to the finals at 132 pounds. He pinned both pool opponents and lost an 8-1 decision to Olathe North's sixth-ranked Blake Samuelson in the finals. 

Cooper Liles also made the finals at 150 pounds. Liles pinned both of his pool opponents in 86 seconds or fewer and was pinned by top-ranked Jacob Goodwin of Goddard in the finals. Fifth-ranked Aiden Schwindt of Olathe North finished third in the bracket.

Aidan Davidson just missed the finals at 175 pounds for a third-place finish. He went 3-0 in pool matches with a pair of pins and a 10-1 major. He won a forfeit against Dodge City in the consolation finals. Second-ranked Jacob Vasquez of Junction City defeated fourth-ranked Griffin Bohanan (190 lbs) of Junction City in the finals.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored with 3.4 seconds left to lift No. 2 Kansas past TCU 83-81 on Saturday.

Dickinson, who led Kansas with 30 points, hit a pair of free throws after a flagrant foul on TCU’s Ernest Udeh Jr. with less than a minute remaining to tie the game. Dickinson then followed Dajuan Harris Jr.'s miss in the final seconds.

“Hopefully I won’t have to take an elbow (to the face) to get a chance to win the game,” Dickinson said. “But I’ll do whatever it takes to win the game.

“It’s really fun to go out there with guys that know how to win, get it done at the end of the day.”

Kansas (13-1, 1-0 Big 12) also got 18 points from KJ Adams Jr. Kevin McCullar Jr. had 16 points and Harris scored 10.

TCU (11-3, 0-1) was led by Trevian Tennyson with 24 points. He was joined in double figures by Emanuel Miller with 20 points and Micah Peavy and Jameer Nelson Jr. with 10 points each.

“Tennyson was great,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Jamie has said publicly that he was their best shooter since Desmond (Bane). We did a terrible job guarding him, but I thought he was terrific.”

Kansas did not have a field goal from anyone outside of Dickinson, McCullar or Adams until Harris hit a layup with 16:04 left in the second half.

“I’ve said this all along — we’re all for that,” Self said when asked if the Jayhawks need a fourth contributor. “Juan (Harris) had a terrible first half. But then he makes the hardest shot in the game and he made the past to win it.

“We’re all for somebody else stepping up. But you know, we’re not going to win all our games with four guys doing all the scoring, but that’s the way it was today.”

The Jayhawks couldn’t shake the Horned Frogs in the first half. Their largest lead was just six points (30-24). Each time Kansas tried to pull away, TCU responded. The Horned Frogs took two late leads before Kansas got a jumper from McCullar to take a 41-40 lead into halftime.

“I’m proud of our players, no question about it,” TCU head coach Jamie Dixon said. “I love their execution, love their intensity, love the ball pressure that we displayed for the entire game. I’m proud of how the guys handled the last minute. I’m proud of everything they did. But we didn’t get the win. Disappointed by that.”

Dickinson led a trio of Jayhawks in double figures in the first half with 18 points.

Both teams shot better than 50% in the first half. TCU was 17 of 33 (51.5%), while Kansas had as many makes with one less attempt for 53.1% from the field.

TCU: The Horned Frogs are not intimidated by playing in Allen Fieldhouse. After handing Kansas the second-worst loss at Allen Fieldhouse in Self’s coaching career last season, the Frogs took Kansas to the wire again Saturday.

Kansas: The Jayhawks are fast starters in league competition. Kansas has won 33 straight conference openers, dating back to 1991 when the Jayhawks lost to Oklahoma.

Hunter Dickinson’s late shot gives No. 2 Kansas 83-81 win over TCU

Sunday might be an opportunity to gauge how devoted Taylor Swift is as a football fan.

One of the few pressing questions going into the AFC West matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers is whether the megastar entertainer decides to take in the regular-season finale at SoFi Stadium, where she performed six sold-out shows on her Eras Tour in late July and early August.

If Swift shows up, she might see something resembling a preseason game — with boyfriend Travis Kelce on the sideline.

With the Chiefs (10-6) locked into the third seed for the playoffs, Patrick Mahomes won't get a chance until next season to see if he can get his ninth win in 11 starts against the Chargers. Blaine Gabbert will be making his first start since 2018, when he was with the Tennessee Titans.

This will be the 49th start for Gabbert, who has played for six teams in 12 seasons.

Gabbert said he doesn't expect many changes with him running the offense.

“We run coach (Andy) Reid’s offense, and ultimately, that’s what we’re going to run. Every quarterback is different, every quarterback does things differently, some things better than others et cetera, et cetera,” Gabbert said. "We’re just going to run our offense. Hopefully throw to the open guy, run the ball well and score some points.”

Along with Mahomes, the Chiefs could rest several other key players, and potentially cost them some significant milestones.

Kelce needs 16 receiving yards to extend his club record and the NFL record for a tight end with his eighth consecutive 1,000-yard season. Wide receiver Rashee Rice needs 58 yards receiving to break Dwayne Bowe’s franchise rookie record. And defensive tackle Chris Jones needs a half-sack to trigger a $1.25 million bonus for reaching 10 on the season.

Reid will not be sitting all of his starters, and he knows there are some meaningful numbers at stake.

“It depends on what the milestone is. We’ll see how all that goes," Reid said.

The Chargers (5-11) have dropped four straight and seven of their last eight. They are locked into a top-eight draft pick while they search for a new coach and general manager. Brandon Staley and Tom Telesco were fired on Dec. 15.

In the midst of one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history, the Bolts would like to end on a winning note for interim coach Giff Smith.

“The motivation to get ready for this game is not an issue. You have seen these last two games, these guys have come out and played hard. We just have to find a way to get over the hump," Smith said. "As far as anything personal goes, that’s kind of irrelevant to me right now. I want to do right by these guys and the organization and go out there and beat Kansas City.”

Easton Stick is looking for his first win as a starting quarterback. The fifth-year player, who took over when Justin Herbert broke his right index finger during the second quarter against Denver on Dec. 10, was unable to get the Chargers into the end zone in last week's 16-9 loss to the Broncos. On the bright side, Stick hasn't committed a turnover the last two weeks.

Stick had three giveaways in his first start at Las Vegas on Dec. 14. He has completed 68% of his passes with three touchdowns and an interception.

“You do this because you want to play, you want to compete, and that’s what you miss when you’re not in there," Stick said. "It’s been a blast, every minute of it — the ups and downs. It’s been awesome. Like I said, I’m really grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to ending it the right way.”

Gabbert is a known quantity, but his backup for the game, Chris Oladokun, is hardly a household name. He played at South Florida and Samford before ending his college career at South Dakota State, and was a seventh-round pick by Pittsburgh in the 2022 draft. Oladokun was released in August, signed with Kansas City and has been on the Chiefs' practice squad ever since.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker was voted the AFC special teams player of the week after going 6 for 6 on field goals to match a career best in last week’s 25-17 win over the Bengals. Butker scored 18 straight points, allowing Kansas City to rally from an early deficit and clinch its eighth consecutive division title.

One of the priorities for the Chargers' new coach and GM should be improving the team's performance in the division. The Bolts are an AFC West-worst 23-42 since 2013, when Telesco was hired. The Chiefs are 50-15 against division opponents that span, which encompasses Reid's entire tenure.

Los Angeles has dropped four straight in AFC West games, is on an eight-game losing streak on the road and hasn't defeated the Chiefs on its home field since 2013. That includes games in San Diego, both of the Chargers’ venues in Los Angeles and a 2019 game in Mexico City where they were the home team.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs and Royals said announced Friday that both Kansas City franchises would remain in Jackson County, where Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums are located, if voters there approve the extension of an existing sales tax that has long paid for their upkeep.

The stadiums, which opened in the early 1970s, are located at the Truman Sports Complex and have been tied to each other through lease agreements with the county for the past five decades. But with the current lease expiring in 2030-31, both teams are planning for the future of their facilities, and the Royals have indicated they want a new downtown ballpark.

They would use the extended sales tax to help fund it while the Chiefs would use it for Arrowhead Stadium renovations.

The Royals have been considering bids from Jackson County, where a new ballpark would be close to the existing T-Mobile Center and Power &amp; Light entertainment district, and a competing offer from Clay County, which sits across the Missouri River.

“The Chiefs and the Royals have partnered with Jackson County for 50 years in a partnership that has worked well for all constituents,” the teams said. “As part of the proposed agreement between the teams and Jackson County, the teams have agreed to provide more than $200 million in new economic benefits to Jackson County over 40 years in a new lease agreement."

The agreement would alleviate the county's obligation to pay stadium insurance premiums and redirect the park tax back to the county. Meanwhile, the Royals would privately fund a new $1 billion ballpark district around their new facility.

The Jackson County legislature is due to meet Monday, and the Chiefs and Royals will attempt to get the tax on the April ballot. If approved, that would clear the way for both teams to begin planning for construction and renovations.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — No. 12 BYU is off to its best start since opening the 1987-88 season with 17 straight wins. The Cougars were picked 13th in the 14-team Big 12 media poll. They are finding success by imposing their will on both ends of the court. BYU is scoring 90.4 points per game with a 58.5% effective field goal percentage while allowing 61.5 points per contest. All three categories rank in the top 12 nationally. BYU guard Trevin Knell says “we believe this is who we are and it’s so fun to see.”

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech says basketball player Pop Isaacs is in good standing after a report of a civil lawsuit accusing the team’s leading scorer of sexual assault of a minor. ESPN has obtained a copy of a lawsuit accusing Isaacs of assaulting the 17-year-old girl when the Red Raiders were playing in a tournament in the Bahamas in November. The school says a Title IX investigation started soon after the incident was reported to coach Grant McCasland. The school says the investigation hasn't revealed any justification for keeping Isaacs from playing. The lawsuit was filed in Lubbock County by the 17-year-old girl's parents.

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — Scottie Scheffler keeps motoring right along in the new year. He won his last event of 2023 in the Bahamas. Then he received the PGA Tour player of the year award for the second straight time. He had eight birdies and an eagle for a 64 on Friday at The Sentry. That gives Scheffler a one-shot lead going into the weekend at Kapalua. Low scoring is to be expected with minimal wind. Tyrrell Hatton is still recovering from jet lag from his trip from England. PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic (AP) — A judge in the Dominican Republic has ordered the conditional release of Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco. He is still facing allegations that he had a relationship with a 14-year-old girl and gave her mother a car and thousands of dollars in exchange for her consent, according to court documents obtained by The Associated Press. The 22-year-old All-Star is accused of commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering. The girl’s mother faces the same charges as Franco. She was placed under house arrest.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals hired longtime Washington Nationals executive Johnny DiPuglia as their special assistant of international scouting and Fred Guerrero as their coordinator of player evaluation on Thursday in two important additions to their front office.

The Royals have been overhauling their player evaluation system since J.J. Picollo took over as general manager more than a year ago. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard announced his intention to transfer to Ohio State on Thursday night, giving the Buckeyes a replacement for Kyle McCord after his own decision to transfer to Syracuse.

Howard made the announcement on his social media channels.

Howard has one season of eligibility remaining after he went 12-5 as a starter for the Wildcats, leading them past TCU in the 2022 Big 12 title game and helping them reach the Pop-Tarts Bowl this past season. But with Kansas State expected to turn over its offense to five-star prospect Avery Johnson, who led the Wildcats to a victory in the bowl game, Howard announced he was entering the transfer portal and considered Miami and Southern California before settling on Ohio State.

He also considered declaring for the NFL draft before deciding to spend a year with the Buckeyes.

Howard has prototypical NFL size at 6-foot-5, 240-plus pounds, and along with a strong arm the ability to run. He also gives Ohio State some experience, having started 27 games and thrown for 5,786 yards and 48 touchdowns during his career.

The Buckeyes missed out on the College Football Playoff following their regular-season loss to Michigan, landing them in the Cotton Bowl.
