Week one of the indoor season produced a pair of recognitions for the Barton Community College track and field program.

The Cougars opened their season this past weekend at the Stan Scott Memorial at Texas Tech University with performances from sophomores Treneese Hamilton and Christopher Young being named the KJCCC's Field Athletes of the Week with Young adding the national NJCAA Athlete of the Week honor to his accolades.

Hamilton posted pair of national qualifying marks in the shot put (14.41m) and weight throw (16.36m) finishing in 6th and 5th place respectively behind four-year competitors. Ranking first in the early season national junior college results in both events, Hamilton especially shined in the weight throw by marking a personal best to sit just outside the program's top ten all-time performances. Although not reaching her best in the shot put, Hamilton already has the program's 6th best throw achieved as a freshman in a ground denting 15.05m.

Also picking up from last season's achievements, Young bettered both his shot put and weight throw marks for national leading standards after week one results were posted. Beginning the day in the weight throw, Young marked a personal best 17.40m to rank just ahead of teammate's Christopher Crawford's 16.46m for 5th place. Concluding his trip to Texas in the shot put, Young not only won the event by nearly five feet but marked an 18.40m distance in moving from fourth to the second spot all-time in Barton history and less than a foot behind Fred Moudani's leading 18.64m top mark.

As a team the Cougars racked up twenty-one national qualifying performance in the one day meet while etching four impacts on the storied top ten list.

Barton's Hamilton and Young earn weekly track and field honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes has done just about everything in his NFL career, particularly when it comes to the postseason.

Five straight AFC title games. Three conference championships. Two Super Bowl titles. One shattered helmet.

Mahomes will try something entirely new Sunday night, though, when he leads the Kansas City Chiefs into Buffalo for the divisional round of the playoffs. His previous 15 postseason games have been played in the friendly environment of Arrowhead Stadium, including a pair of wins over the Bills, so Mahomes never has been forced to go on the road.

“It kind of is what it is,” he said Wednesday. “I've been lucky enough to play a lot of games at home, at Arrowhead Stadium, and things have fallen that way. Now we get to go on the road to a hostile environment, and one I have not played in with fans in the stands. But it's what you want to do when you grow up watching these games.”

The only time Mahomes has played at Highmark Stadium was in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic saved him from having to tune out all of those Bills fans. He threw for 225 yards and two TDs in leading Kansas City to a 26-17 win that day.

The reason the Chiefs are hitting the road following their wild-card win over the Dolphins is in part because of a rare offensive offside penalty on Kadarius Toney in their regular-season game against Buffalo last month. The call wiped out a miraculous play in which Travis Kelce lateraled to Toney for what would have been the go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes.

The Bills wound up winning, eventually secured the No. 2 seed and that relegated Kansas City to the No. 3 seed.

It might not be such a bad thing that Mahomes is going on the road, though. He has a higher completion percentage, throws for more yards per game and has a significantly better quarterback rating during road games in his career.

He's even taken eight fewer sacks away from home, despite playing in two more games.

Asked to explain that one, Mahomes replied: “It's just Coach (Andy) Reid preaches communication.”

“You have to have nonverbal communication when you're on the road. We preach that,” Mahomes continued, “and then not letting anything be too negative or too positive, just going about your business the right way.

“On the road,” he said, "one big plays seems to be magnified more, and one bad play is magnified more, too.”

All of that bodes well for the Chiefs. So does this: Mahomes is better in the divisional round than any other round, going 5-0 with 11 touchdowns, no interceptions and a completion rate of 70% that is well above his career average.

“I know he looks forward to playing. He gets fired up for every game,” Reid said. “That's a great venue up there (in Buffalo). If you can't get fired up for that, it's hard to get fired up. But he's always ready and excited.”

Mahomes has certainly been a problem for the Bills, but mostly in the postseason. He won that pandemic game at Highmark Stadium, but is winless in three tries against Josh Allen and Co. in regular-season games at Arrowhead Stadium.

The playoffs are another story. He has ended Buffalo's season in two of the past three years.

The first time came during the AFC championship game in the 2020 season, when he went 29 of 38 for 325 yards with three touchdowns and no picks in a 38-24 romp. The second came one year later, when he needed a mere 13 seconds to drive Kansas City within range of a tying field goal to end regulation, then hit Kelce for the winning touchdown in overtime in the divisional round.

In those two games, Mahomes completed 76% of his throws for 703 yards with six TD passes, no picks and a touchdown run.

“The Bills are a great challenge. I think everybody understands that,” he said. “They've gotten my number a number of times. They beat us earlier this year. We know we'll have to play great football to win the game. It's not about ending their season for us. It's about advancing. Finding a way to get to the next round.”

Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes hitting the road for first time in the playoffs to play Buffalo

TOPEKA, Kan. — The National Federation of High School and Kansas State High School Activities Association would like to announce that Rodney Palen was named the National Federation Officials Association (NFOA) Active Official Award for Section 5. Section 5 includes the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. 

Palen, the Beloit native, began his officiating career in 1986. He has served as a registered official in the state of Kansas for 38 years in basketball, 31 years in football, 19 years in softball and baseball, and 13 years in volleyball. He also serves as a league commissioner for the Northern Plains League as well as the North Central Activities Association. Rodney has had opportunities to work several state tournaments in a variety of sports. 

“Rodney serves as a great resource for officials with his leadership and mentorship in the variety of sports he serves in,” said KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick.   

The NFHS also recognized 12 other active officials as 2023 State Officials of the Year. These officials have made significant contributions to high school officiating as a KSHSAA registered official.

The Lady Panther bowlers kicked off the season with a win at the Bishop Carroll Baker's Tournament on Jan. 6. Last Thursday, the squads returned to action in Dodge City. Both sides performed well.

The Panther girls rolled a 2,062 to beat the Red Demons by more than 300 pins. Great Bend had four of the top five individual bowlers. Just two bowlers surpassed 600 pins on the day. Kaylin Walhmeier opened with games of 245 and 252 to lead the way with a 661 series. Dodge City's Taylor Lenz finished second overall with 603 pins. Zoey Mayberry rolled games of 164 and 161 to place third with 472 pins. Brooklyn Mayberry stayed in the 150s all day to finish fourth with a 463. Emilee Nelson topped out with a 157 for a 442 series for fifth. Paige Heine finished strong with a 162 for a 438 series, and Rionna Rodriguez shot a 371. In Baker's competition, Great Bend defeated Dodge City 2,716 to 2,221. The Lady Panthers took all 13 team points.

The boys' side was much closer with Dodge City edging the Panthers by 150 pins 2,179 to 2,029. Dodge City's Kaden Webb had the high-game at 227 and the high-series at 632. Brantley Vsetecka rolled games of 203 and 207 to finish with a 597 series and miss second place by a single pin. Daegan Miller opened with a 190 game and finished with a 536 series for fourth. Quinten Miller finished with a 187 to place fifth with a 469. Joshua Manning picked up more pins as the day went on for a 415 series. Keaton Wahlmeier had a slow start and just missed a 400 series by two pins. Kayden Detrick also improved throughout the day for a 314 series. In Baker's action, Great Bend took a pair of games but fell 2,878-2,680. Dodge City won team points 11-2.

The Panthers host Hays on Jan. 22 at the Walnut Bowl.

Jamal Shead scored a career-high 29 points and also had 10 assists,
J’Wan Roberts added 12 points and No. 5 Houston snapped a two-game
losing streak with a 77-54 win over No. 25 Texas Tech. The Cougars,
who have now won 15 straight at home, were coming off losses at Iowa
State and TCU last week. Kerwin Walton scored 18 points and Pop
Isaacs added 12 points for Texas Tech, which had its nine-game
winning streak snapped. The Red Raiders shot 37% and were 11 of 27 on
3-pointers.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) —
Jaylin Sellers had 24 points, Shemarri Allen scored 15 of his 17
points in the second half and UCF rallied from a 15-point deficit in
the second half to beat Texas 77-71. UCF trailed 59-46 with 11:59
remaining before holding Texas to four made shots — all from
3-point range — the rest of the way. The Knights finished the game
on a 24-9 run. Ithiel Horton scored 20 points to lead Texas (12-5,
1-3), which has lost three of its last four games.

FORT WORTH, Texas
(AP) — The Big 12 says two TCU women’s basketball games have been
canceled because the team does not have enough available players. The
Horned Frogs had been scheduled to host No. 7 Kansas State on
Wednesday night and visit No. 24 Iowa State on Saturday. The TCU
athletic department says those games were canceled “due to injuries
within the program and in the interest of the health and safety of
our student-athletes.” The program announced it would hold open
tryouts Thursday and Friday for women interested in walking on for
the remainder of the season. Iowa State and Kansas State each will be
credited with a win in the league standings and TCU will pick up two
losses.

Those last-second shots and breathtaking upsets that make the NCAA
Tournament so great tend to get remembered the most by fans. But some
of college basketball's greatest games have actually occurred during
the regular season, and helped shape the AP Top 25, which is
celebrating its 75th anniversary. The final poll traditionally is
released before postseason games commenced, so all those NCAA Tourney
games would have had no bearing on its ranking. But games like
UCLA-Houston on Jan. 20, 1968, billed as “The Game of the Century,”
most assuredly impacted the way voters looked at the teams the

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.
(AP) — Neither frigid blowing winds, the prospect of another 2 feet
of snow being dumped on the region nor an Erie County-imposed travel
ban could prevent the Buffalo Bills from showing up for practice.
Bills coach Sean McDermott credited snow removal crews for having the
roads clear, and also got a break with the storm moving north.
Buffalo is already facing a short week in preparing to host the
Kansas City Chiefs in a divisional round playoff game on Sunday.
Buffalo lost a day after a snowstorm pushed back its playoff opener
against Pittsburgh from Sunday to Monday. The second storm in less
than a week is not expected to affect Buffalo's game against Kansas
City.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(AP) — The manufacturer of the helmet that Chiefs quarterback
Patrick Mahomes shattered during their AFC wild-card game with Miami
says it “did its job” by protecting him on a helmet-to-helmet
collision Saturday night. The game was the fourth-coldest in NFL
history. The temperature at kickoff was minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit,
and winds gusting to more than 25 mph made the wind chill approach
minus-30 during the game. Certor Sports, which makes the VICIS helmet
that Mahomes was wearing, said the extreme conditions “are bound to
test the limits of even the highest-performing products.” But the
helmet still protected the NFL MVP.

Coyotes Head to Sterling in Search of Wins Over Warriors

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson believes Kansas' offense is starting to reach its potential.

The 7-foot-2 center had 21 points and seven rebounds, and the third-ranked Jayhawks rolled past Oklahoma State 90-66 on Tuesday night.

In front of a crowd that was maybe half full and included a significant number of Kansas fans, the Jayhawks shot 62% and never trailed.

“We were kind of due for one of these wins where we build an early lead and maintain it throughout the game," Dickinson said. "We’re very talented, and I think it was just a matter of time before we put the offense together and everybody just had a really good game at once. I think we just did a really good job of not getting complacent.”

Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 18 points and KJ Adams Jr. scored 16 for the Jayhawks (15-2, 3-1 Big 12).

Johnny Furphy matched a season high by scoring all 15 of his points in the first half for Kansas. The 6-9 freshman guard from Australia also had seven rebounds in just his third start.

“I think Johnny’s done a really good job these past couple of games when he’s been in the starting lineup just being confident and being himself," Dickinson said. "I think the four vets are just looking for him to go out there and play his game.”

Bryce Thompson led Oklahoma State with 20 points. The former Kansas guard surpassed 1,000 career points after entering the night with 986.

Javon Small, Oklahoma State's season leader with nearly 15 points per game, finished with two on 1-for-10 shooting as the Cowboys (8-9, 0-4) dropped their fourth straight.

Oklahoma State was winless in the conference, but they had taken then-No. 18 Baylor to overtime in their last home game on Jan. 6. And the Cowboys had registered home wins against the Jayhawks in 2018 and 2021 under coach Mike Boynton.

Kansas took control of this one early, shooting a blistering 67.7% from the field in the first half to take a 48-33 lead at the break.

Late in the first half,&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/AustinCEckert/status/1747452481607455044?s=20">Nicolas Timberlake dunked on Thompson</a>&nbsp;to give Kansas a 46-27 edge.

“That was a great play,” Furphy said. “I passed that ahead. I didn’t fully expect him to get up that high, but I heard Kev (McCullar) scream out, ‘Dunk that!'”

Thompson hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first half to cut Kansas' lead to 15 at the break.

The Jayhawks kept the pressure on, and their largest lead was 28 points in the second half.

"We lost to a really good team that played well tonight,” Boynton said. “That’s really the bottom line, and for us we’ve got to figure out what we want to have as the identity and the legacy of this particular team. And we need to have those answers before Saturday when we play again.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks followed their school-record low two-turnover performance against Oklahoma by producing 21 assists to 11 turnovers against the Cowboys.

Hunter Dickinson scores 21 as No. 3 Kansas cruises past Oklahoma State 90-66

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State must have felt good about its chances to beat ninth-ranked Baylor when they headed to overtime Tuesday night.

After all, the Wildcats have never lost with Jerome Tang on the bench when a game is tied at the end of regulation.

Arthur Kaluma helped to keep that perfect streak intact when he converted a four-point play to give them the lead with 20 seconds left, and Tylor Perry added a pair of clinching free throws with 6.9 seconds to go, as the Wildcats scored the final nine points for a 68-64 victory — their fifth overtime win of the season and 10th in the past two years.

Asked to explain the OT success, Tang replied: “Maturity, right? Some older guys. Belief. And then we work on it every day. Every single day, we work on it. It's something our guys really take pride in.”

The win also made Tang 3 for 3 in games against Baylor, where he spent 19 seasons as an assistant to Scott Drew.

“He's a really good coach. He puts them in position to win,” Drew said, “and then I think the home games — that's why it's so hard to win on the road in the Big 12. The fans deserve a lot of credit for that. But I credit him. He's a really good coach.”

Baylor had the Wildcats (13-4, 3-1 Big 12) down 64-59 with just over a minute left when RJ Jones buried a 3-pointer from the corner to give them a chance. And when RayJ Dennis missed a driving layup at the other end for the Bears (14-3, 3-1), Kaluma managed to swish a 3 from the top of the key while getting fouled by Baylor freshman Ja'Kobe Walter.

“The moment it left my hand,” Kaluma said, “I knew it was good.”

After he made his free throw, Langston Love missed an open 3 that would have given Baylor the lead. Perry secured the rebound and was fouled, and his two free throws — after missing one late in regulation — put the game away.

Perry and Cam Carter finished with 18 points apiece to lead the Wildcats. Kaluma had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Love had 15 points and Jalen Bridges scored 11 to pace the Bears, who were just 5 for 28 from beyond the arc. Walter was held to eight points on 3-for-11 shooting, and Dennis managed seven on a 2-for-15 effort from the floor.

“Shots just didn't fall tonight,” Love said.

The Bears actually led 31-26 at halftime despite the nation's most accurate 3-point-shooting team starting 1 of 11 from the arc.

It helped that the Wildcats didn't even get shots off on nearly half of their possessions. Carter had five turnovers by himself, the final one ruining a chance for the final shot — Baylor scored at the buzzer instead — and Kansas State had 11 as a team.

The sloppy ball-handling came after the Wildcats had 18 turnovers in their last-second loss at Texas Tech on Saturday.

NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Poll | Week Seven - 1-16-24

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Get ready for Patrick Mahomes versus Josh Allen: Playoff Edition Part III.

Only this time there’s a twist — and no, it doesn’t involve potential sightings of Taylor Swift at Buffalo’s more popular wing joints.

The most significant change from a football perspective involves the Kansas City Chiefs (12-6) leaving the frigid comforts of Arrowhead in January by traveling to the equally frigid — and snowier — confines of Highmark Stadium for an AFC divisional round playoff showdown on Sunday night.

Rather than being serenaded by the “Tomahawk Chop,” the Chiefs will be greeted by a fanbase better known for trashing folding tables and which celebrated Buffalo's playoff-opening rout over Pittsburgh by throwing tufts of snow in the air like confetti on Monday.

Though this will be Mahomes' second trip to Western New York following the Chiefs’ 26-17 regular-season win in 2020, it'll be the quarterback’s first true playoff road game.

Fittingly, it’s Buffalo, where the Bills (12-6) and their fans have long fantasized over how home-field advantage might turn the tables after two of their past three playoff runs ended in Kansas City.

There was the lopsided 38-24 blowout loss in the AFC championship game in the 2020 season.

More immemorable was the heart-wrenching 42-36 overtime loss in the divisional round a year later in a game dubbed “13 Seconds” by Bills fans.

That’s how much time was left in regulation for the Chiefs to gain 44 yards on two plays and set up Harrison Butker’s game-tying 49-yard field goal. Kansas City won the coin toss and scored on its opening possession, which led directly to the NFL changing its playoff rules in now allowing the coin-toss loser one possession to tie the game if scored upon.

So nightmarish was the outcome, Bills coach Sean McDermott, to this day, refuses to reveal what went wrong in the team’s decision to kickoff into the end zone — rather than bounce it short — after Gabe Davis scored his fourth touchdown to put the Bills ahead.

This season, Buffalo earned the right to host the game with a 20-17 win at Kansas City on Dec. 10, which sparked the Bills five-game winning streak to close the season and clinch their fourth straight AFC East title.

The Bills, however, know all too well to be careful what they wish for in knowing the task of beating the Chiefs won’t be easy after splitting their previous six meetings, including playoffs, since 2020

“We’ve had our battles over the years and this will be another one. I mean, you watch what they did the other night. They were dominant,” McDermott said, referring to the Chiefs’ playoff-opening 26-7 win over Miami on Saturday. “So we gotta get our rest and try and get a little bit healthier, if we can, and then, and get ourselves ready to go again.”

Complicating matters further are the Bills are playing on an even shorter week after their playoff opener was moved from Sunday to Monday because of a lake-effect storm hitting the region. With another storm set to hit Buffalo on Tuesday night, there’s concern the Bills may not be able to travel to their facility for practice on Wednesday.

The Bucs won for the sixth time in seven games to advance to a NFC
divisional round matchup on the road next Sunday against the Detroit
Lions. David Moore scored on a 44-yard reception in the first
quarter. Rookie Trey Palmer broke the game open with a 56-yard
catch-and-run for a TD that put the Bucs up 25-9 late in the third
quarter. Mayfield also threw a 23-yard TD pass to Chris Godwin.

record six Super Bowl championships. The fifth of those Super Bowls
came nearly seven years ago against the Falcons in a game Atlanta led
28-3 in the third quarter before Tom Brady rallied the Patriots to a
34-28 overtime victory. The Falcons are seeking a successor to Arthur
Smith, who was fired shortly after the conclusion of his third
straight 7-10 season.

Jim Harbaugh has
interviewed with the Los Angeles Chargers for their head coaching
vacancy, a week after he led the University of Michigan to a national
title. The Chargers announced Harbaugh’s interview on Monday
without saying exactly when it took place. He is the eighth coaching
candidate to interview with the Chargers, but his resume stands out
from the rest. The 60-year-old Harbaugh has an 89-25 record in nine
seasons coaching his alma mater. Before that, he went 44-19-1 in four
seasons as San Francisco’s coach and took the 49ers to the Super
