Tylor Perry, with 1.2 seconds left on the shot clock, lobbed an inbound pass from the baseline to Carter for an alley-oop layup to give Kansas State a 68-66 lead with 24 seconds left. Oklahoma State lost the ball out of bounds and Carter made two free throws to make it a two-possession game with 8.7 remaining.

Kaluma, who topped the 1,000-point plateau for his career with a dunk late in the first half, made 7 of 12 from the field, including three 3-pointers. Warren Washington had 19 points and nine rebounds and gave the Red Raiders (15-3, 4-1 Big 12) their first lead at 64-62 with a jump hook in the lane with seven minutes remaining. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — RaeQuan Battle scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Pat Suemnick added a career-high 20 points and West Virginia beat No. 3 Kansas 91-85 on Saturday.

Fans stormed the court after the Mountaineers (7-11, 2-3 Big 12) improved to 7-5 against Kansas in Morgantown and broke a six-game losing streak in the series.

West Virginia set the pace with an early 3-point shooting barrage and outhustled the Jayhawks to get key free throws in the end.

Kansas (15-3, 3-2) trailed for most of the second half until K.J. Adams hit two free throws for an 81-80 lead with 2:41 remaining. Suemnick answered with a bank shot over Hunter Dickinson 35 seconds later to give the Mountaineers the lead for good.

West Virginia sealed the win by making nine of 10 free throws in the final 34 seconds.

Kerr Kriisa added 15 points for the Mountaineers.

Kevin McCullar led Kansas with 24 points and Dickinson scored 19. Freshman Johnny Furphy hit three 3-pointers and grabbed three rebounds in the first four minutes but went 22 minutes before scoring again and finished with 13 points.

The Mountaineers, the Big 12’s worst 3-point shooting team, made 12 of 21 (57%) from beyond the arc, including nine of their first 11.

Kansas could drop several spots in the AP Top 25 poll.

Kansas: It's the most points allowed this season by the Jayhawks, who ran into a determined team that has beaten two straight ranked opponents at home.

West Virginia over No. 3 Kansas 91-85

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Serena Sundell and Zyanna Walker led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points each as No. 7 Kansas State beat Kansas 69-58 on Saturday in front of the Wildcats' largest home crowd of the season.

K-State (18-1, 7-0 Big 12) used a big first quarter to open a double-digit lead and then held off every Kansas rush.

“We just had to settle down,” Sundell said. “I was telling everybody in the huddle, ‘We’re in charge of this game. We’ve been in control. Let’s find our shot. Get a good stop defensively and just settle down.’"

Much of the talk in the postgame was about adjustments to who wasn't there, as K-State was playing without All-American Ayoka Lee and Kansas lost Taiyanna Jackson in the first quarter.

“(The players) know that when (Lee) is out of the game, we play differently,” K-State coach Jeff Mittie said.

Jackson lost a few teeth in a crash with Brylee Glenn and didn't return.

“You have to try to get them back in as soon as possible or there can be long-term nerve damage,” Kansas coach Brandon Schneider said. “A young person’s long-term health is much more important than a half of basketball.

"In the second, third and fourth quarters in this game, I think that we demonstrated a great deal of character that we can build on.”

The atmosphere definitely impressed both coaches. Mittie said the crowd helped his team respond when Kansas made the game close in the fourth quarter.

“So many times crowds cheer when you make big plays, but this crowd was different” he said. "They cheered when we needed to make a big play."

Schneider was impressed as well by the roughly 9,602 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.

“I’ve been a head coach for 26 years, and I thought that that was the best road student section of a game that I’ve ever been a part of,” he said. “So credit to their students.”

Zakiyah Franklin had 18 points for Kansas (9-9, 2-5). The Jayhawks also got 12 points each from S'Mya Nichols and Holly Kersgieter.

Kansas: The Jayhawks hung tough. Even though they fell behind early, they never let the game get away.

Kansas State: The Wildcats will have to rely on their depth without Ayoka Lee for the next four weeks. Lee had surgery on her left ankle Friday. She is averaging 19.8 points with a .677 field-goal percentage and 8.2 rebounds. She ranks second in the nation and leads the Big 12 in field-goal percentage.

Kansas: Hosts Iowa State on Wednesday night.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — As much respect Josh Allen has for friend and occasional offseason golf partner Patrick Mahomes, the Buffalo Bills quarterback still can’t forget when his Kansas City Chiefs rival got the last laugh at his expense.

The two were teammates in a made-for-TV golf event in June 2022 when Mahomes was asked to describe Allen’s biggest fear. Pausing for a moment, Mahomes said, “A coin toss,” causing Allen to smile and lower his head.

The Kansas City quarterback, of course, was referring to the Chiefs' 42-36 overtime victory in a 2021 season AFC divisional-round game that Bills fans have dubbed “13 Seconds.” That’s the amount of time it took Mahomes to march the Chiefs 44 yards to set up a tying field goal as time expired, after which Kansas City won the coin toss and ended the game with a touchdown on the first overtime possession.

On Sunday night, the Bills (12-6) and Chiefs (12-6) will meet in the playoffs for the third time in four years and once again in the divisional round, and the past is the last thing on Allen's mind.

“We don’t need to bring that up,” Allen said Wednesday. “I’m sure people will bring up what I’m afraid of but, nah, I got a lot of respect for him and his game and who he is off the field.”

At least two things have changed since the last Bills-Chiefs playoff meeting.

The Bills’ loss prompted the NFL to change its postseason overtime rules to ensure both teams get a possession.

After having their 2020 and ’21 seasons end at Arrowhead Stadium with playoff losses, it’s the Bills' turn to host the Chiefs in what will be Mahomes’ first playoff road game. It will also mark Mahomes' first time experiencing the full roar of fans at Highmark Stadium. His only other game at Buffalo was played in an empty stadium due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020.

“Even though I know it’s going to be hostile and there are going to be people talking trash and everything like that, I’m excited for it because it’s one of the best environments in football,” Mahomes said. “And you want to do that when you grow up watching these games in the best environments and see what it’s like.”

Although the teams had the same record in the regular season, Buffalo won the tiebreaker — and the right to host — with its 20-17 win at Kansas City last month. That was the first of six straight victories for the Bills, including Monday's wild-card round victory over Pittsburgh.

Snow isn’t in the forecast, though cold temperatures are, which shouldn’t affect either team. The Bills are accustomed to the cold, while the Chiefs beat visiting Miami last weekend with a game-time temperature of minus-4 Fahrenheit (minus-20 Celsius) and wind chills that made it feel 20 degrees colder.

Bills coach Sean McDermott’s first NFL job was on current Chiefs coach Andy Reid's staff in Philadelphia in 1999.

“Smart, tough and works hard,” Reid said of McDermott.

And McDermott bears no grudge for Reid’s decision to fire him as the Eagles' defensive coordinator following the 2010 season.

“I think it doubled down on my work ethic,” said McDermott, who then spent six years as Carolina's defensive coordinator before Buffalo hired him in 2017. “In some ways, I’m extremely grateful for it.”

There’s also the familiarity between non-division rivals who have split their past six meetings, including playoffs, since 2020.

“There’s no secrets,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said.

Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver has played at Arrowhead five times over the past four years.

“It’s just like playing a divisional opponent,” Oliver said. “Honestly, I love playing there. But we get them here.”

Wherever the setting, Allen appreciates how difficult it will be to beat the defending Super Bowl champions.

“They’re at the top of the mountain. They know what it takes to get there. We’ve yet to do that,” said Allen, whose lone AFC championship game appearance ended in a 38-24 loss at Kansas City. “As a competitor, to be in a situation like this is something you dream about.”

The Chiefs, who led the NFL in dropped passes this season, have turned to Rashee Rice to take some of the attention off tight end Travis Kelce. The rookie receiver responded against Miami by setting franchise records with eight catches for 130 yards. It was the sixth-most yards receiving by a rookie in NFL history.

“I’m going out there just to get a win, first of all,” Rice said, “and everything else just comes with it.”

A Bills defense already missing starting cornerback Tre’Davious White and starting linebacker Matt Milano could be further depleted after four more regulars were hurt against the Steelers. The group includes starting nickelback Taron Johnson (concussion) and starting cornerback Christian Benford (knee).

“No big thing. We’re built for this,” Oliver said. “We can handle this. This is nothing new.”

After converting more than 71% of their red-zone trips into touchdowns last season, the Chiefs managed just 52% this season, putting them in the bottom half of the league. The problems continued against Miami, when the Chiefs went 2 for 6 and settled for four field goals from Harrison Butker.

But all eyes were on Belichick amid reports that he was the team’s top choice and had flown to Atlanta on one of owner Arthur Blank’s private jets. The Falcons haven't had a winning season since 2017 and have never won a Super Bowl. Belichick is a six-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's football program is under NCAA investigation a year after a failed name, image and likeness deal worth more than $13 million with former signee Jaden Rashada. The Gators released the NCAA’s notice of inquiry Friday to The Associated Press and the Tampa Bay Times after the newspaper’s lawyers got involved. The NCAA’s letter, dated June 9, 2023, is addressed to school president Ben Sasse and states the NCAA enforcement staff has begun an investigation into the football program. Names of investigators were redacted, and Rashada was not mentioned.

UPDATE (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that hard-throwing reliever Josh Hader and the Houston Astros have agreed to a $95 million, five-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was subject to a successful physical. Hader’s deal can be considered the most lucrative for a relief pitcher, even while falling short of the total dollars in Edwin Díaz’s $102 million, five-year contract with the New York Mets that began last year. Díaz’s contract includes $26.5 million in deferred payments he won’t completely receive until 2042 and was valued at $93.2 million for baseball's luxury tax.

The first-ballot inductees joined driver Donnie Allison, an original member of the “Alabama Gang,” in a celebration at the Charlotte Convention Center as part of the Class of 2024. Janet Guthrie was inducted as the Landmark Award winner for contributions to NASCAR. Guthrie was the first woman to race in both the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500. Johnson won 83 Cup races in the Hendrick Motorsports No. 48 Chevrolet, all but two of them with Knaus as crew chief.

UPDATE (AP) — The jobs of people who produce Sports Illustrated were in limbo after the company that paid to maintain the iconic brand’s print and digital products told staff that its license was revoked. In an email to employees Friday morning, the Arena Group, which operates Sports Illustrated and related properties, said that because of the revocation, “we will be laying off staff that work on the SI brand.” Authentic later said in a statement it intends to keep Sports Illustrated going. The company is negotiating with Arena and other publishing entities to determine who will do that, according to a person with knowledge of the talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly about them.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jackson County Executive Frank White vetoed an ordinance Thursday that would have put a 3/8th-cent sales tax renewal on the April ballot to fund sports stadiums for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.

“This proposed sales tax would generate over $2 billion from our residents, yet there is no clear understanding or assurance regarding the teams’ commitments and contributions to the county,” White said in a news release, the Kansas City Star reported. “It’s not a good deal for taxpayers and I cannot support an agreement that is not in their best interest.”

Shortly after the veto announcement, four county legislators said they sided with White. In order to override White's veto, the County Legislature — which has nine members — would need six votes. They are approaching a Jan. 23 deadline to put the stadium tax decision in front of voters this spring.

The Royals and Chiefs released a joint statement after White's veto that said, “We respect the County Executive’s veto authority. We will continue working with the legislators to ensure that this ordinance is on the ballot on April 2 so that Jackson County voters have the opportunity to decide on the extension of the current 3/8th-cent sales tax.”

The Royals are seeking to use the sales tax to help fund building a new downtown ballpark, though they have not yet announced their location. The Chiefs have consistently stated their intentions to renovate Arrowhead Stadium.

The current stadium leases at the Truman Sports Complex expire in 2031. Although some legislators pointed out Thursday that April isn’t the only ballot in 2024 or in the years ahead of that expiration date, both teams have targeted April for the measure. They are said to have support from the current governor’s office, which has pushed their urgency.

Facing its toughest challenge of the season, the Barton Community College wrestling team would come up short Thursday evening at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena falling 46-0 to 2nd ranked Pratt Community College.

Dropping to 0-3 in league play and 0-9 on the season, the Cougars will continue the road trip next Tuesday making the trip to Chanute, KS to take on host Neosho County and 10th ranked Northwest Kansas Technical College.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler walked into Florida Atlantic’s arena a bit late, arriving around the midpoint of the first half. Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov was at a college basketball game for the first time.

The Owls made sure to give their courtside guests a good show — especially in the second half.

Alijah Martin scored 22 points, Johnell Davis added 19 and No. 23 FAU rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to beat Wichita State 86-77 on Thursday night. Martin and Davis combined for 30 of FAU's 55 second-half points, and yes, they noticed that the stars were watching.

“They're not here to see myself and the staff,” FAU coach Dusty May said. “They're here to see these guys.”

Vladislav Goldin scored 17 and Tre Carroll added 10 off the bench for Florida Atlantic (14-4, 4-1 American), which won its third straight.

Quincy Ballard scored 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting for Wichita State (8-9, 0-4), which dropped its sixth straight. Colby Rogers also had 18 for the Shockers, who haven’t had a losing streak this long since 2008-09.

“I’m not sure if you’re aware of our schedule, but in the last six games we played four Quad 1 games and one of them is a Quad 2,” Wichita State coach Paul Mills said. “I don’t get caught up in all that. I don’t make the schedule. You just play whoever's in front of you.”

Ballard might have had the play of the night — blocking a dunk try by the 7-foot-1 Goldin, the nation’s leader in field-goal percentage, with 2:28 left. But it wasn’t enough for the Shockers, who managed only five field goals in the final 10 minutes.

Wichita State’s lead was 11 early in the second half, and the chip-chip-chipping away by FAU started.

Every time the Owls made a little dent, the Shockers had a little answer. Jalen Gaffney scored to get FAU within 48-43 with 15:35 left; Isaac Abidde rebutted with a dunk. Martin had a pair of baskets to get FAU within four; Rogers and Kenny Pohto had the responses after those.

“Felt good to help the team dig it out,” Martin said.

Then, finally, the breakthrough — FAU got back-to-back 3-pointers to fall for only the second time all night, Nick Boyd and Martin hitting them, and reclaimed the lead at 66-64 with 6:48 left.

The Owls wouldn’t trail again. Davis got a three-point play with 3:10 remaining to push the lead to seven; the lead didn't fall below four the rest of the way.

Wichita State: The Shockers gave themselves a serious chance with a pair of big first-half runs. Wichita State opened the game on a 13-2 run, lost the lead briefly on three occasions — then ran away, ending the half with a 14-0 spurt to take a 42-31 edge into intermission and forcing the Owls to miss their last nine shots of the half.

Florida Atlantic: It was FAU’s first game without injured forward Giancarlo Rosado, who is expected to miss at least four weeks with a sprained left knee. Rosado was hurt in Sunday’s win over UAB. He is expected to miss at least seven games.

FAU has been in the AP Top 25 for each of the last 12 weeks, one of only 10 teams in the country with such a streak. A win Sunday would likely ensure another appearance.

the Bills host the Chiefs in a divisional round meeting on Sunday
night. The outing will be Mahomes' first playoff road start and his
first time playing in front of a Buffalo home crowd.

head coach says he expects to be back for an 18th season and that his

job has only intensified through the season and plans to sign a
contract extension soon. While Tomlin is returning, the Steelers have
plenty of questions to answer in the offseason. The team's top
priority is hiring a new offensive coordinator after Matt Canada was
fired just before Thanksgiving.

an elusive playoff breakthrough with him as coach. McCarthy is
returning for a fifth season despite a stunning 48-32 wild-card loss

title game in three consecutive 12-win playoff seasons. McCarthy said
the club has developed a “championship program” with two NFC East
titles in three seasons. He says it just hasn't reached a “world
championship yet.”

third baseman. He is among 12 first-timers in consideration for the
Class of 2024 that will be revealed Jan. 23. A four-time All-Star,
Beltré had 3,166 hits and 477 homers, and his 2,759 career games
played at third base are fewer than only Brooks Robinson. When the
Rangers retired Beltré's No. 29 jersey the season after his final
game, the celebration included messages from Hall of Fame third
basemen George Brett, Mike Schmidt and Chipper Jones. They all told
Beltré that night in 2019 they'd see him in Cooperstown as soon as
he became eligible for election.

CORAL GABLES, Fla.
(AP) — Miami tight end Cam McCormick has announced he will return
to college for what is believed to be an unprecedented ninth season
of eligibility. It'll be one final season from a career that was
derailed multiple times by season-ending injuries. McCormick spent
the first seven of those college seasons at Oregon, transferred to
Miami for the 2023 season and announced Thursday he will keep playing
in 2024. If the Hurricanes make the College Football Playoff this
coming season, that may give McCormick the chance to play in a game
after the calendar flips to 2025.
