The Barton Community College wrestling team wrapped up its November slate Saturday at the annual UNK Younes Hospitality Open inside the Sportsplex in Kearney, Nebraska. Competing in the freshman and sophomore Amateur Bracket, the Cougars produced a 17-35 overall record against a deep field featuring multiple NCAA Division II, NAIA, and NJCAA programs.

Barton was led by&nbsp;Brennen Pfannenstiel&nbsp;at 149 pounds, piecing together a 5-1 performance before reaching the daily match count. Pfannenstiel opened his day with a fall before being bounced to the consolation side, where the freshman regrouped with four victories including two more pins and a pair of decisions before hitting the match limit. Pfannenstiel's lone setback came on the championship side against Chadron State's Aidan Callahan.

The Cougars' other two multi-win efforts came from&nbsp;Teron Kraft&nbsp;(184-pounds),&nbsp;Jamal Garrett&nbsp;(125-pounds) who each finished their day 2-2 on the mats. Kraft's work was highlighted by a lightning quick 23-second fall in the second championship round and a 22-3 tech fall to advance into the consolation fifth round before bowing out to Western Colorado's Gabriel Cox. Garrett delivered his wins with a pair of high-scoring consolation decisions, 18-11 and 22-16, to reach the consolation round 4.

Several others in the Barton lineup also found the win column, with&nbsp;Joshua "AJ" Almanza&nbsp;(133),&nbsp;Shane Todd&nbsp;(133),&nbsp;Clayton Considine&nbsp;(141),&nbsp;Isaiah Morales(157),&nbsp;Dominic Riccardi&nbsp;(174),&nbsp;Brody Schnoebelen&nbsp;(197), and&nbsp;Keyven Schroeder&nbsp;(285) each producing victories across their respective brackets.

Trio of Cougars record multi-win efforts at UNK Younes Hospitality Open

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Rocco Becht threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns, with two scores and 73 yards going to Brett Eskildsen, and Iowa State defeated Kansas 38-14 on Saturday.

The Cyclones (7-4, 4-4 Big 12) earned their first win against the Jayhawks (5-6, 3-5) since 2021 and came away with their first home victory since Sept. 27 against Arizona.

Carsen Hansen rushed for 99 of his 120 yards in the first half, including a 4-yard score to put Iowa State ahead 14-0 early in the second quarter. Kyle Konrardy added the second-longest field goal of his career from 55-yards out to extend the lead 17-0 with 10:32 remaining before the break.

“(Hansen) has that physical ability to fall forward every time he runs the football," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “He plays like that, and keeps that consistency all the time.”

The teams combined for four straight touchdown drives in the third quarter, with Iowa State leading 31-14 entering the fourth.

“Getting into a rhythm is beautiful,” Eskildsen said. “It’s huge momentum, you get the crowd into it and it’s just (big) having things like that.”

Aiden Flora capped the scoring with 1:07 left in the fourth with his first rushing touchdown of the season for the Cyclones.

“Execution today is the biggest word,” Becht said. “We had a confidence in one another knowing that everything was clicking and everyone was doing their jobs.”

Jalon Daniels was 13-of-23 passing for 154 yards and an interception for Kansas. Boden Groen had five catches for 76 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Cole Ballard.

“We've got to coach it better,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “We've got to continue to find ways to execute.”

Becht looked much more confident in the first half against Kansas after completing his first 10 passes. He finished 18 of 23.

Kansas is in danger of missing out on bowl eligibility for the second straight season under Leipold.

Iowa State takes on Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Saturday.

Kansas returns home for a game against Utah on Saturday.

Rocco Becht throws for 3 TDs and Iowa State snaps 3-game skid against Kansas 38-14

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Devon Dampier threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, including&nbsp;a go-ahead 1-yard score&nbsp;with 56 seconds left, and No. 13 Utah rallied from a 12-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter for a wild 51-47 victory over Kansas State on Saturday.

“Believe until that clock says zero! This is a special team and we’re going to do something with it. Finished out the game strong,” Dampier said.

The game turned on an unusual play. After KSU took a 47-35 lead on Joe Jackson’s third rushing touchdown of the game, the Wildcats went for 2, but Utah’s Tao Johnson intercepted a tipped ball and returned it to the Kansas State end zone for 2 points to make it 47-37.

“If that play doesn’t happen, it's probably a different outcome,” coach Kyle Whittingham said. “It was four-point switch.”

The usually reserved coach was emotional after possibly his last game at Rice-Eccles Stadium. He has been considering retirement.

“That was one for the ages,” Whittingham said. “You can't dream that up.”

Dampier’s 20-yard TD toss to Larry Simmons got Utah within 47-44 with 2:47 left. After the Utes forced a punt, Dampier led the winning drive, setting up his go-ahead score with a 59-yard run to the 1 on fourth down.

“My confidence is high when all my teammates tell me I'm going to get it ... so to finish that drive after all the adversity, a game-winning drive with no errors felt good,” Dampier said.

Lander Barton intercepted Avery Johnson's pass&nbsp;with 49 seconds remaining to seal it for Utah (9-2, 6-2 Big 12, No. 12 CFP), which kept alive its hopes for a league title and a College Football Playoff berth.

“The whole game we made a lot of mistakes ... but to end it that way I was so happy for the boys, all of us seniors,” Barton said.

Jackson rushed for a school-record 293 yards for Kansas State (5-6, 4-4), topping Darren Sproles' mark of 292 yards set in 2004. The Wildcats finished with a program-record 472 yards rushing, the most by a Division I team in a loss since Army ran for 534 in a 52-49 loss to North Texas on Nov. 18, 2017.

Dampier threw for 259 yards and rushed for 94. Byrd Ficklin rushed for three touchdowns and Wayshawn Parker had 100 yards on 19 carries for Utah, which had 551 yards of offense to 574 for Kansas State.

VJ Payne knocked the ball out of Dampier's hand and Cody Stufflebean recovered the fumble at the Utah 26-yard line to set up Jackson's 24-yard TD rush midway through the fourth.

Dampier found Dallen Bentley for a 38-yard TD reception and Ficklin ran for his third TD to put Utah up 35-31 early in the third quarter. But Johnson threw to Garrett Oakley for a TD on fourth down and Luis Rodriguez added a 36-yard field goal to put KSU ahead 41-35 with 8:51 to play.

“Pressure makes diamonds,” Ficklin said he told Dampier in the fourth quarter. “Prove you are a diamond. Show who you are.”

Utah’s defensive leader, John Henry Daley,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/a8a7711d680f7a0a7ba6a93b304bad70">left the game with a leg injury</a>&nbsp;late in the first quarter, when the defensive end already had two sacks and 3 1/2 tackles for loss. Daley grabbed his leg on a non-contact play and was helped to the locker room. Leading receiver Ryan Davis also left the game early with an injury.

Accepting coach Chris Klieman’s challenge to play “big boy, physical football,” Kansas State had 348 yards rushing in the first half, including 225 in the second quarter as the Wildcats led 31-21.

“One of the greatest efforts I’ve been a part of as a coach and it’s hard to say this because we lost the game," Klieman said.

Kansas State gashed the Utah defense on its way to five consecutive scoring drives — four TDs and a 22-yard field goal. Jackson gained 236 yards in the first half with TD runs of 66 and 80 yards. Antonio Martin Jr. and Johnson also rushed for scores.

Feeling the pressure after another loss, Klieman said: “I’ve given my ... life for this place for seven years. I’ve given everything for seven years and I think I deserve a little bit of respect.”

Kansas State: Late in a disappointing season that began with Big 12 title hopes, the Wildcats put together an unforgettable display of power and speed on the ground but let Utah make all the big plays in the final three minutes.

Utah: The Utes' defense was overwhelmed by the Wildcats’ physicality on the line of scrimmage, but they found a way to salvage an unfathomable win, largely thanks to Dampier.

Kansas State hosts Colorado next Saturday.

GURGL, Austria (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin dominated another women’s World Cup slalom as the American ski star made it two convincing wins from two races in the discipline in the Olympic season. Shiffrin posted the fastest time in both runs to finish 1.23 seconds ahead of second-place Lara Colturi, the Italian prodigy competing for Albania. The pair also went 1-2 in the first slalom of the season a week ago in Finland. Slalom world champion Camille Rast of Switzerland trailed by 1.41 in third. Shiffrin said “I had to push so hard."

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Rose Lavelle scored in the 80th minute and Gotham FC beat the Washington Spirit 1-0 to win their second National Women’s Soccer League championship. Second-half substitute Bruninha drove into the Spirit box on the left wing and sent the ball across to Lavelle, whose left-footed shot sailed past Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury into the bottom corner. It is the first NWSL championship title for Lavelle, who had previously scored in the 2023 final when she was playing or the Seattle Reign against Gotham in a 2-1 loss.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The University of Alabama at Birmingham says a football player stabbed two teammates Saturday morning hours before the game against the University of South Florida. UAB says both wounded players are in stable condition. A suspect is in custody. The university has not released the names of those involved. County jail records show offensive lineman Daniel Mincey was arrested and charged with assault and attempted murder. It was not clear if he had legal representation yet. Attempts to reach family members for comment were not successful. University officials would not confirm his involvement. Interim Coach Alex Mortensen said some players chose to sit out the game but most played to honor graduating seniors. The Blazers lost 48-18.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Former Wake Forest star and 12-year NBA player Rodney Rogers has died at the age of 54. The school announced Saturday that Rogers died the previous day. Rogers had been paralyzed from the shoulders down since a 2008 accident. Rogers died from natural causes tied to the spinal-cord injury he suffered. That's according to a National Basketball Players Association statement on behalf of Rogers’ family. Rogers was the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year in 1993. The “Durham Bull” went on to score nearly 9,500 points in the NBA while being named league sixth man of the year in 2000.

The drizzle that was supposed to stop hours before kickoff
but persisted through two possessions of Friday night’s Class 5A state
semifinal game may have been a bad omen. But in the end, it was not the weather
that doomed the top-ranked Panthers. Salina Central’s aggressive play calling
and trick plays resulted in a pair of touchdowns, and the Mustangs were able to
survive the upset bid 30-28 to advance to next Friday’s championship game
against unbeaten Basehor-Linwood.

“That’s why you watch film, I guess,” said Central coach
Mark Sandbo. “We felt comfortable with some calls even though they looked
gutsy. One we can’t take credit for – that’s a kid making a play. We saw some
things we liked. We were doing some really good things, and then our kids
executed. Our good is good enough. We’re a really good football team, and our
kids were really good tonight.”

One call that was not necessarily gutsy proved to be consequential.
With time running out before the half, Sandbo opted for a 32-yard field goal
try from senior Elijah Duxler. That kick as time expired sent the Mustangs into
the half with a 16-6 lead.

Duxler was poised for more points on the first drive of the
third quarter. The Panthers again made a goal-line stand to force fourth-and-nine.
Duxler spotted up for another field goal but Mustang senior Abram Owings took
the fake and found senior Bodie Rodriguez for a 9-yard touchdown pass and a 23-6
Central lead nearly eight minutes into the second half.

Great Bend responded with force. Five plays later, senior
Daxton Minton hit junior Cooper Ohnmacht over the middle for a 56-yard strike
to keep the season alive.

Then the Panther defense stepped in, forcing a punt on the
next Salina possession, then getting fumble recoveries from junior Jaxon Wondra
and senior Ian Premer on the next two stops. Using a short field after the
punt, the Panthers needed just three plays before Minton ran 23 yards for a 23-21
score with 13 ticks left in the third.

Great Bend had all the momentum with the next two takeaways,
but the Central defense stole it back with a pair of big stops.

&nbsp;“(Our defense) was
fantastic,” Sandbo said. “We put them in some tough situations, but they
responded. In a time like this, in a game like this, you have to respond, and
you have to make plays. They made some plays.”

With time becoming a factor, Great Bend burned through three
timeouts in a last-ditch attempt to stop the Mustangs. Central converted a big
third-and-10 to keep possession, but soon faced fourth-and four in the final
minute. Sandbo dialed up another trick play that resulted in a 23-yard
touchdown pass from junior Griffin Hall to senior Jesus Delgado with just 33
seconds left. The Mustang grew to 30-21.

Still, the Panthers were not finished. Minton put a 46-yard
pass on a rope to Ohnmacht for a touchdown with just 13 seconds gone from the clock.
Central recovered the ensuing onside kick to end Great Bend’s hope of a state
championship berth.

The Panthers opened the game with the ball but punted it
away just four plays later. Central drove a short field on its first possession
before senior Cooper Reves scored from four yards out to open scoring five
minutes in.

Great Bend answered with a &nbsp;quick drive, capped by a 14-yard touchdown run
from senior Conner Holladay. The Mustangs marched right back down the field
before Reves scored from 16 yards out for a 13-6 Central lead two minutes into
the second quarter.

Reves, who entered the night with more than 2,400 rushing
yards this season, ran for 95 yards and the two touchdowns on 20 carries in the
first half. He added 157 yards and 38 carries to his big season totals. Hall
rushed for 75 yards on 19 carries and added 157 yards and a touchdown on 9-of-13
passing.

Minton, the all-time passing touchdown leader at Great Bend,
finished his career strong with 161 yards on 8-of-17 passing. After some big
rushing games in the last few weeks, he was kept in check with 23 yards on
seven carries. Premer ran the ball 10 times for 68 yards. Ohnmacht caught four
passes for 133 yards and a pair of scores.

Great Bend ends its historic season at 11-1. Salina Central
takes an 11-1 record into next Friday’s Class 5A state championship game at Emporia
State University. Unbeaten Basehor-Linwood defeated St. James Academy 28-20 to
advance to the finals out of the east side of the bracket.

Friday on Sports Day(Watch)

The No. 17 Barton Community College men's basketball team rode a late 8-0 run Wednesday evening to open Jayhawk Conference play, holding off Dodge City Community College for an 85-78 victory inside the Fleske Fieldhouse.

The win pushes the Cougars to 6-1 overall while the Conquistadors drop to 4-3 on the season. Barton continues league play Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. road trip to Cloud County Community College before returning home Tuesday to host Colby Community College.

Dodge City controlled the early minutes, using second-chance opportunities to build an 11-4 lead before Barton settled in out of the first media timeout. The Cougars answered with a steady 16-8 surge, getting buckets from&nbsp;Jayden Ramirez&nbsp;and&nbsp;Noah Williams&nbsp;before back-to-back treys by&nbsp;Aris Rodriguez&nbsp;pulled Barton within one. No. 5 Barton Volleyball edged in five, season ends to No. 13 Eastern Arizona

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Lange agreed to a $900,000. one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, two days after the 30-year-old right-hander was released by the Detroit Tigers.

Lange can earn an additional $100,000 in performance bonuses: $50,000 each for 25 and 30 games.

Lange was on the injured list from the start of the season because of a strained right late muscle. He was activated Aug. 18, pitched one scoreless inning against Houston, then was optioned to Triple-A Toledo three days later and went 2-1 with a 4.63 ERA in 24 relief appearances for the Mud Hens.

He was 15-15 with a 3.70 ERA and 29 saves in five seasons with the Tigers.

Kansas City also agreed to a one-year contract with right-hander James McArthur. He was on track to be eligible for salary arbitration if tendered a contract by Friday's deadline.

The fifth-seeded Barton Community College volleyball team never fully settled into rhythm Wednesday evening at the Winfield Dunn Center, falling in straight sets to 12th-seeded Snow College (15-25, 22-25, 19-25) on the opening day of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Making the program's 25th national tournament appearance following a ten-day layoff, the Cougars slipped to 31–6 overall entering Thursday's 1:00 p.m. elimination matchup against 13th-seeded Eastern Arizona College. Snow improved to 15–14 and moves into Thursday's 7:00 p.m. winners-bracket match against 4th seed Northeastern Junior College.

After a sluggish start, Barton mounted strong pushes in the second and third frames but was repeatedly denied by Snow's 12 team blocks, which helped limit the Cougars to a season-low .080 attack percentage against the Badgers' efficient .276 output.

Stasa Stamenkovic&nbsp;posted a team-high 10 kills, though on just .097 hitting, while adding 10 digs for her 18th double-double of the year.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/olander_aubrey_5yxp">Aubrey Olander</a>&nbsp;contributed 9 kills on a team-best .263 efficiency, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/pruitt_indigo_x7fp">Indigo Pruitt</a>&nbsp;added 5 kills on .231, but Barton's normally productive middle duo was held to just three total blocks by Snow's steady first-contact and balanced attack.

Caroliny Cristiny&nbsp;also added 5 kills, with&nbsp;Brylynn Wicker&nbsp;and&nbsp;Paola Batista&nbsp;each supplying three kills. Defensively, Barton totaled just seven blocks and finished with 49 digs, led by&nbsp;Mina Kaneko's 13. Setters&nbsp;Mileah Neal&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ori Briger&nbsp;directed the offense with 16 and 13 assists, respectively, combining for 15 digs.

The Badgers' block dictated much of the set, forcing nine Cougar errors and holding Barton to .025 in a 25–15 result.

Friday Sub-State Pairings

NEW YORK (AP) — A&nbsp;lingering hamstring injury&nbsp;caused Darryn Peterson to miss a third consecutive game for Kansas, and coach Bill Self is not sure when the nation’s top recruit and potentially the top pick in next year’s NBA draft might be ready to play again.

After the&nbsp;24th-ranked Jayhawks lost to No. 5 Duke&nbsp;in the Champions Classic on Tuesday night, Self said they were “a makeshift team right now.” Peterson has not played since getting hurt during a pregame shootaround on Nov. 11.

“He’s had hamstring tightness, which is caused by a slight hamstring strain,” Self said. “So, until that subsides he’s going to not be confident to play on it, to push off and those sorts of things, which has been going on a fairly significant amount of time.”

Self said the team feels good about how it is handling Peterson and doesn't expect the absence to be “long at all.” There was no immediate clarity about whether the 18-year-old guard will be able to play next week in the Players Era tournament in Las Vegas.

“He’s going to be re-evaluated later in the week,” Self said. “Yeah, he could not be available to us, but we’ll just have to wait and see after he’s evaluated here.”

Kansas is scheduled to face Notre Dame on Monday and Syracuse next Tuesday.

Peterson averaged 21.5 points over his first two college games, against Green Bay and North Carolina. Kansas had no trouble beating Texas A&amp;M-Corpus Christi and Princeton without him, but fell behind and could not catch up against the Blue Devils.

“There is a difference (without Peterson),” said Tre White, who scored a game-high 22 points in the 78-66 loss. “Darryn is a 1-on-1 scorer, so we've definitely got to make up for that. But the message has been the same: next man up, do the little things, play more aggressive. That’s what we tried to do.”

 </figure>NEW YORK (AP) — A&nbsp;lingering hamstring injury&nbsp;caused Darryn Peterson to miss a third consecutive game for Kansas, and coach Bill Self is not sure when the nation’s top recruit and potentially the top pick in next year’s NBA draft might be ready to play again.After the&nbsp;24th-ranked Jayhawks lost to No. 5 Duke&nbsp;in the Champions Classic on Tuesday night, Self said they were “a makeshift team right now.” Peterson has not played since getting hurt during a pregame shootaround on Nov. 11.“He’s had hamstring tightness, which is caused by a slight hamstring strain,” Self said. “So, until that subsides he’s going to not be confident to play on it, to push off and those sorts of things, which has been going on a fairly significant amount of time.”Self said the team feels good about how it is handling Peterson and doesn't expect the absence to be “long at all.” There was no immediate clarity about whether the 18-year-old guard will be able to play next week in the Players Era tournament in Las Vegas.“He’s going to be re-evaluated later in the week,” Self said. “Yeah, he could not be available to us, but we’ll just have to wait and see after he’s evaluated here.”Kansas is scheduled to face Notre Dame on Monday and Syracuse next Tuesday.Peterson averaged 21.5 points over his first two college games, against Green Bay and North Carolina. This follows indictments of Cleveland pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, who are accused of taking bribes to rig pitches. They have pleaded not guilty. Manfred says MLB's internal investigation has no timetable. MLB is also aiding players who have received threats related to gambling. Manfred avoided discussing management's positions in collective bargaining for a new labor contract.

(AP) — A post on New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd’s Instagram account on Wednesday said he has started to breathe on his own after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning. Boyd’s Instagram Stories feature a picture of the special teams standout lying down in what appears to be his hospital bed, with the words “God is real, God is powerful” at the top of the image. The post came a few hours after Jets coach Aaron Glenn said he had spoken to Boyd and is confident Boyd will be OK. He added that Boyd was “upbeat” in their recent conversation.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Shedeur Sanders will make his first NFL start on Sunday in Las Vegas as the Browns turn to the high-profile quarterback while fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel recovers from a concussion. Sanders replaced an injured Gabriel for the second half of last week’s 23-16 loss to Baltimore. It was a shaky debut as Sanders, who was drafted by Cleveland in the fifth round, completed just 4 of 16 passes with an interception. He also was sacked twice and fumbled once. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday that Gabriel remains in concussion protocol. Sanders will be the 42nd quarterback to start for Cleveland since 1999.
